Antiferromagnetic materials have great potential for spintronic applications at terahertz (THz) frequencies. However, in contrast to ferromagnets, experimental studies of antiferromagnets are often challenging due to a lack of straightforward external control of the N\'eel vector $\mathbf{L}$. Here, we study an AFM|FM stack consisting of an antiferromagnetic metal layer (AFM) of the novel material Mn2Au and a ferromagnetic metal layer (FM) of NiFe. In this exchange-spring system, $\mathbf{L}$ of AFM Mn2Au can be controlled by the application of an external magnetic field B_ext. To characterize the AFM|FM stack as a function of the quasi-static $\mathbf{B}_{\mathrm{ext}}$, we perform THz-pump magneto-optic probe experiments. We identify signal components that can consistently be explained by the in-plane antiferromagnetic magnon mode excited by field-like N\'eel spin-orbit torques (NSOTs). Remarkably, we find that the $\mathbf{B}_{\mathrm{ext}}$- and THz-pump-induced changes in the optical response of the sample are dominated exclusively by the spin degrees of freedom of AFM. We fully calibrate the magnetic circular and magnetic linear optical birefringence of AFM and extract the efficiency of the NSOTs. Finally, by selective excitation of domains with different orientation of $\mathbf{L}$, we are able to determine the relative volume fraction of 0{\deg}, 90{\deg}, 180{\deg} and 270{\deg} domains distribution during the quasi-static reversal of $\mathbf{L}$ by $\mathbf{B}_{\mathrm{ext}}$. Our insights are an important prerequisite for future studies of ultrafast coherent switching of spins by THz NSOTs and show that THz-pump magneto-optic-probe experiments are a powerful tool to characterize magnetic properties of antiferromagnets.

We demonstrate detection of broadband intense terahertz electromagnetic pulses by Zeeman-torque sampling (ZTS). Our approach is based on magneto-optic probing of the Zeeman torque the terahertz magnetic field exerts on the magnetization of a ferromagnet. Using an 8 nm thick iron film as sensor, we detect pulses from a silicon-based spintronic terahertz emitter with bandwidth 0.1-11 THz and peak field >0.1 MV/cm. Static calibration provides access to absolute transient THz field strengths. We show relevant added values of ZTS compared to electro-optic sampling (EOS): an absolute and echo-free transfer function with simple frequency dependence, linearity even at high terahertz field amplitudes, the straightforward calibration of EOS response functions and the modulation of the polarization-sensitive direction by an external AC magnetic field. Consequently, ZTS has interesting applications even beyond the accurate characterization of broadband high-field terahertz pulses for nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy.

We study femtosecond spin currents through MgO tunneling barriers in CoFeB(2 nm)|MgO($d$)|Pt(2 nm) stacks by terahertz emission spectroscopy. To obtain transport information independent of extrinsic experimental factors, we determine the complex-valued spin conductance $\tilde{G}_d (\omega)$ of the MgO layer (thickness d= 0-6 {\AA} over a wide frequency range $(\omega/2\pi=$ 0.5-8 THz). In the time $(t)$ domain,$ G_d (t)$ has an instantaneous and delayed component that point to (i) spin transport through Pt pinholes in MgO, (ii) coherent spin tunneling and (iii) incoherent resonant spin tunneling mediated by defect states in MgO. A remarkable signature of (iii) is its relaxation time that grows monotonically with $d$ to as much as 270 fs at $d= 6$ {\AA}, in full agreement with an analytical model. Antiferromagnets have large potential for ultrafast coherent switching of magnetic order with minimum heat dissipation. In novel materials such as Mn$_2$Au and CuMnAs, electric rather than magnetic fields may control antiferromagnetic order by N\'eel spin-orbit torques (NSOTs), which have, however, not been observed on ultrafast time scales yet. Here, we excite Mn$_2$Au thin films with phase-locked single-cycle terahertz electromagnetic pulses and monitor the spin response with femtosecond magneto-optic probes. We observe signals whose symmetry, dynamics, terahertz-field scaling and dependence on sample structure are fully consistent with a uniform in-plane antiferromagnetic magnon driven by field-like terahertz NSOTs with a torkance of (150$\pm$50) cm$^2$/A s. At incident terahertz electric fields above 500 kV/cm, we find pronounced nonlinear dynamics with massive N\'eel-vector deflections by as much as 30{\deg}. Our data are in excellent agreement with a micromagnetic model which indicates that fully coherent N\'eel-vector switching by 90{\deg} within 1 ps is within close reach., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

We show scalable and complete suppression of the recently reported terahertz-pulse-induced switching between different resistance states of antiferromagnetic CuMnAs thin films by ultrafast gating. The gating functionality is achieved by an optically generated transiently conductive parallel channel in the semiconducting substrate underneath the metallic layer. The photocarrier lifetime determines the time scale of the suppression. As we do not observe a direct impact of the optical pulse on the state of CuMnAs, all observed effects are primarily mediated by the substrate. The sample region of suppressed resistance switching is given by the optical spot size, thereby making our scheme potentially applicable for transient low-power masking of structured areas with feature sizes of ~100 nm and even smaller.

We study ultrafast magnetization quenching of ferromagnetic iron following excitation by an optical vs a terahertz pump pulse. While the optical pump (photon energy of 3.1 eV) induces a strongly nonthermal electron distribution, terahertz excitation (~4 meV) results in a quasi-thermal perturbation of the electron population. The pump-induced spin and electron dynamics are interrogated by the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). A deconvolution procedure allows us to push the time resolution down to 130 fs, even though the driving terahertz pulse is more than 0.5 ps long. Remarkably, the MOKE signals exhibit an almost identical time evolution for both optical and terahertz pump pulses, despite the three orders of magnitude different number of excited electrons. We are able to quantitatively explain our results using a model based on quasi-elastic spin-flip scattering. It shows that in the small-perturbation limit, the rate of demagnetization of a metallic ferromagnet is proportional to the excess energy of the electrons, independent of the precise shape of their distribution. We report strong amplification of photo-magnetic spin precession in Co-doped YIG employing a surface plasmon excitation in a metal-dielectric magneto-plasmonic crystal. Plasmonic enhancement is accompanied by the localization of the excitation within the 300~nm-thick layer inside the transparent dielectric garnet. Experimental results are nicely reproduced by numerical simulations of the photo-magnetic excitation. Our findings demonstrate the magneto-plasmonic concept of subwavelength localization and amplification of the photo-magnetic excitation in dielectric YIG:Co and open up a path to all-optical magnetization switching below diffraction limit with energy efficiency approaching the fundamental limit for magnetic memories., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Laser-induced terahertz spin transport (TST) and ultrafast demagnetization (UDM) are central but so far disconnected phenomena in femtomagnetism and terahertz spintronics. Here, we use broadband terahertz emission spectroscopy to reliably measure both processes in one setup. We find that the rate of UDM of a single ferromagnetic metal film F has the same time evolution as the flux of TST from F into an adjacent normal-metal layer N. This remarkable agreement shows that UDM and TST are driven by the same force, which is fully determined by the state of the ferromagnet. An analytical model consistently and quantitatively explains our observations. It reveals that both UDM in F and TST in the F|N stack arise from a generalized spin voltage, which is defined for arbitrary, nonthermal electron distributions. We also conclude that contributions due to a possible temperature difference between F and N are minor and that the spin-current amplitude can, in principle, be increased by one order of magnitude. In general, our findings allow one to apply the vast knowledge of UDM to TST, thereby opening up new pathways toward large-amplitude terahertz spin currents and, thus, energy-efficient ultrafast spintronic devices., Comment: 23 pages

We analyze ultrafast electron dynamics in the time domain upon optical excitation of propagating surface plasmon-polaritons (SPs) in metal-dielectric heterostructures. Developing a kinetic model where both local and non-local electron relaxation in metals are included, we identify relevant timescales and extend the existing non-equilibrium electron dynamics framework onto the case of collective electronic excitations. The experimental data obtained in two distinct series of pump-probe measurements (with varied pump wavelength and angle of incidence) demonstrate SP-driven, one order of magnitude enhanced efficiency of the hot electron generation and the fourfold (up to 200 fs) slowdown of their non-local relaxation at the SP resonance. We discuss the perspectives of the SP-enabled manipulation of the non-equilibrium electron population lying at the crossover of photonics and ultrafast spintronics., Comment: 4 figures

Ultrafast all-optical control of spins with femtosecond laser pulses is one of the hot topics at the crossroads of photonics and magnetism with a direct impact on future magnetic recording. Unveiling light-assisted recording mechanisms for an increase of the bit density beyond the diffraction limit without excessive heating of the recording medium is an open challenge. Here we show that surface plasmon-polaritons in hybrid metal-dielectric structures can provide spatial confinement of the inverse Faraday effect, mediating the excitation of localized coherent spin precession with 0.41 THz frequency. We demonstrate a two orders of magnitude enhancement of the excitation efficiency at the surface plasmon resonance within the 100 nm layer in dielectric garnet. Our findings broaden the horizons of ultrafast spin-plasmonics and open pathways towards non-thermal opto-magnetic recording at the nano-scale.

The interaction of a cavity with an external field is symmetric under time reversal. Thus, coupling to a resonator is most efficient when the incident light is the time reversed version of a free cavity decay, i.e. when it has a rising exponential shape matching the cavity lifetime. For light entering the cavity from only one side, the maximally achievable coupling efficiency is limited by the choice of the cavity mirrors' reflectivities. Such an empty-cavity experiment serves also as a model system for single-photon single-atom absorption dynamics. We present experiments coupling exponentially rising pulses to a cavity system which allows for high coupling efficiencies. The influence of the time constant of the rising exponential is investigated as well as the effect of a finite pulse duration.
