9. The effect of highly-ordered molecular conformations on the optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers

Abstract

This thesis examines the effect of well-defined, highly-ordered molecular conformations on conjugated polymer optoelectronic properties. Understanding the links between chemical and physical structure and optoelectronic properties is critical for the continued development of conjugated polymer electronic devices and applications. This is achieved using a variety of spectroscopic techniques, including time-resolved and temperature-dependent absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The first results chapter uses ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy to resolve exciton dissociation dynamics in the polyfluorene poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene), PFO, as the amount of chain segments adopting the highly-ordered β-phase conformation is systematically varied. Increased polaron generation yield when β-phase chains are present is assigned to more efficient exciton dissociation at the interface between disordered glassy and ordered β-phase conformational phases, attributed to significant local energetic offsets, the higher electronic delocalisation of the β-phase and mismatches in charge carrier mobilities. The second results chapter examines a second, recently reported β-phase forming polyfluorene, PODPF. Formation of β-phase is characterised by absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy following a series of thermal annealing steps. In addition to β-phase, formation of crystalline regions is observed at higher annealing temperatures, from which a second variant of β-phase can also form. Generation of higher-ordered molecular conformations is found to be sensitive to heating rate. The third results chapter compares photophysical and structural properties of PODPF and PFO. The means by which backbone planarisation is achieved, key to β-phase formation, appears to be very different. The β-phase in PODPF is reliant upon interchain interactions and so is inherently 3-dimensional, rather than a solely intrachain phenomenon as for PFO. This leads to lower efficiency energy transfer in PODPF than PFO due to larger PODPF β-phase domains. Finally, the optical properties of the homoconjugated polymer, PPM, and methyl-substituted derivatives, are characterised to probe the conformational origins of homoconjugation. The concentration of the two distinct homoconjugated chromophores in PPM is found to be very low. Chain length-dependent absorption suggests that formation of one homoconjugated species is confined to chain ends, while the second species requires a certain substitution pattern between polymer repeat units.

Abstract

Some studies have shown that the incidence of type 2 diabetes increases after a diagnosis of COVID-19, although the evidence is not conclusive. However, the effects of the COVID-19 vaccine on this association, or the effect on other diabetes subtypes, are not clear. We aimed to investigate the association between COVID-19 and incidence of type 2, type 1, gestational and non-specific diabetes, and the effect of COVID- 19 vaccination, up to 52 weeks after diagnosis.

Abstract

COVID-19 vaccination rates are lower in women of reproductive age (WRA), including pregnant/postpartum women, despite their poorer COVID-19-related outcomes. We evaluated the vaccination experiences of 3568 U.K. WRA, including 1983 women (55.6%) experiencing a pandemic pregnancy, recruited through the ZOE COVID Symptom Study app. Two staggered online questionnaires (Oct–Dec 2021: 3453 responders; Aug–Sept 2022: 2129 responders) assessed reproductive status, COVID-19 status, vaccination, and attitudes for/against vaccination. Descriptive analyses included vaccination type(s), timing relative to age-based eligibility and reproductive status, vaccination delay (first vaccination >28 days from eligibility), and rationale, with content analysis of free-text comments. Most responders (3392/3453, 98.2%) were vaccinated by Dec 2021, motivated by altruism, vaccination supportiveness in general, low risk, and COVID-19 concerns. Few declined vaccination (by Sept/2022: 20/2129, 1.0%), citing risks (pregnancy-specific and longer-term), pre-existing immunity, and personal/philosophical reasons. Few women delayed vaccination, although pregnant/postpartum women (vs. other WRA) received vaccination later (median 3 vs. 0 days after eligibility, p < 0.0001). Despite high uptake, concerns included adverse effects, misinformation (including from healthcare providers), ever-changing government advice, and complex decision making. In summary, most women in this large WRA cohort were promptly vaccinated, including pregnant/post-partum women. Altruism and community benefit superseded personal benefit as reasons for vaccination. Nevertheless, responders experienced angst and received vaccine-related misinformation and discouragement. These findings should inform vaccination strategies in WRA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Exciton behavior is crucial for improving the optoelectronic property of a light‐emitting conjugated polymer. Herein, the photoexcitation dynamics of exciton migration and energy transfer in a self‐doped β‐conformation film of the polydiarylfluorenes (poly[4‐(octyloxy)‐9,9‐diphenylfluoren‐2,7‐diyl]‐co‐[5‐(octyloxy)‐9,9‐ diphenylfluoren‐2,7‐diyl], PODPF) are demonstrated. Compared to the first generation of the β‐conformation polyfluorene, poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene) (PFO), energy transfer occurs in PODPF β‐conformation films in a time period of ≈150 ps, much longer than those of the PFO ones (<5 ps), associated with the effective intrachain energy transfer (few hundred picoseconds), rather than interchain Förster energy transfer (a few picoseconds). Similar to PFO, the PODPF β‐conformation also displays well‐resolved vibronic emission peaks at 20 K, attributed to the planar and rigid conformation. Interestingly, a residual 0‐0 band emission of nonplanar conformation chain segments (435 nm, 2.85 eV) at 20 K also further confirms the exciton migration from the amorphous state to the β‐conformation domain in PODPF films. Therefore, the stable dual amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) behavior of the PODPF self‐doped films at 461 nm (2.69 eV) and 483 nm (2.57 eV), originates from the individual amorphous and β‐conformation domains. Abstract

Understanding the structure–property relationships that govern exciton dissociation into polarons in conjugated polymers is key in developing materials for optoelectronic applications such as light-emitting diodes and solar cells. Here, the polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO), which can form a minority population of chain segments in a distinct, lower-energy “β-phase” conformation, is studied to examine the influence of conformation and microstructure on polaron generation in neat thin films. Through use of ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy to probe PFO thin films with glassy-phase and β-phase microstructures and selectively exciting each phase independently, the dynamics of exciton dissociation are resolved. Ultrafast polaron generation is consistently found to be significantly higher and long-lived in thin films containing β-phase chain segments, with an average polaron yield that increases by over a factor of three to 4.9% vs 1.4% in glassy-phase films. Abstract

The effect of substituting o‐carborane into the most sterically hindered positions of phenanthrene and benzo(k)tetraphene is reported. Synthesised via a Bull–Hutchings–Quayle benzannulation, the crystal structures of these non‐linear acenes exhibited the highest aromatic deformation parameters observed for any reported carborane compound to date, and among the largest carboranyl C−C bond length of all organo‐substituted o‐carboranes. Photoluminescence studies of these compounds demonstrated efficient intramolecular charge‐transfer, leading to aggregation induced emission properties. Additionally, an unusual low‐energy excimer was observed for the phenanthryl compound. These are two new members of the family of carborane‐functionalised non‐linear acenes, notable for their peculiar structures and multi‐luminescent properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Synthesis, processing, and characterization are reported for a series of tetracyanoplatinate Magnus’ salt (TCN-MS) derivatives—soluble derivatives of the generally intractable Magnus’ green salt—that feature the general structure [Pt(NH2R)4][Pt(CN)4] where R is a branched alkyl group or a ω-phenylalkyl group. In solutions, these coordination compounds generally dissolve on the level of individual ion pairs as shown by X-ray diffraction analysis. To enable the formation of quasi-one-dimensional linear stacks of Pt(II) atoms in thin films, the matrix-assisted assembly is employed, whereby the compounds are codissolved with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), followed by film casting, thermally activated assembly, and eventual removal of PEO. Remarkably, assembled TCN-MS inorganic polymers exhibit bright blue-green photoluminescence. A detailed investigation of the assembly process and simultaneously modified solid-state optical properties is performed using a range of microscopy, optical and vibrational spectroscopy, and thermal analysis techniques. Given their unusual combination of optical properties, namely, transparency in the visible region, high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (up to 13% in first-demonstration samples), and large Stokes shifts (up to 1 eV), TCN-MS derivatives are proposed as a promising class of light-emitting materials for emerging applications in molecular optoelectronics, the potential and challenges of which are discussed., ACS Omega, 4 (6), ISSN:2470-1343

Abstract

Peer reviewed: True, Background: SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels can be used to assess humoral immune responses following SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination, and may predict risk of future infection. Higher levels of SARS-CoV-2 anti-Spike antibodies are known to be associated with increased protection against future SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, variation in antibody levels and risk factors for lower antibody levels following each round of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination have not been explored across a wide range of socio-demographic, SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination, and health factors within population-based cohorts. Methods: Samples were collected from 9,361 individuals from TwinsUK and ALSPAC UK population-based longitudinal studies and tested for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Cross-sectional sampling was undertaken jointly in April-May 2021 (TwinsUK, N = 4,256; ALSPAC, N = 4,622), and in TwinsUK only in November 2021-January 2022 (N = 3,575). Variation in antibody levels after first, second, and third SARS-CoV-2 vaccination with health, socio-demographic, SARS-CoV-2 infection and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination variables were analysed. Using multivariable logistic regression models, we tested associations between antibody levels following vaccination and: (1) SARS-CoV-2 infection following vaccination(s); (2) health, socio-demographic, SARS-CoV-2 infection and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination variables. Results: Within TwinsUK, single-vaccinated individuals with the lowest 20% of anti-Spike antibody levels at initial testing had 3-fold greater odds of SARS-CoV-2 infection over the next six to nine months (OR = 2.9, 95% CI: 1.4, 6.0), compared to the top 20%. In TwinsUK and ALSPAC, individuals identified as at increased risk of COVID-19 complication through the UK 'Shielded Patient List' had consistently greater odds (2- to 4-fold) of having antibody levels in the lowest 10%. Third vaccination increased absolute antibody levels for almost all individuals, and reduced relative disparities compared with earlier vaccinations. Conclusions: These findings quantify the association between antibody level and risk of subsequent infection, and support a policy of triple vaccination for the generation of protective antibodies. Abstract

Background: Some individuals experience prolonged illness after acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We assessed whether pre-infection symptoms affected post-acute COVID illness duration., Methods: Survival analysis was performed in adults (n=23 452) with community-managed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection prospectively self-logging data through the ZOE COVID Symptom Study app, at least weekly, from 8 weeks before to 12 weeks after COVID-19 onset, conditioned on presence versus absence of baseline symptoms (4-8 weeks before COVID-19). A case-control study was performed in 1350 individuals with long illness (≥8 weeks, including 906 individuals (67.1%) with illness ≥12 weeks), matched 1:1 (for age, sex, body mass index, testing week, prior infection, vaccination, smoking, index of multiple deprivation) with 1350 individuals with short illness (<4 weeks). Baseline symptoms were compared between the two groups, and against post-COVID symptoms., Results: Individuals reporting baseline symptoms had longer COVID-related symptom duration (median 15 days versus 10 days for individuals without baseline symptoms) with baseline fatigue nearly doubling duration. Two-thirds (910 (67.4%) of 1350) of individuals with long illness were asymptomatic beforehand. However, 440 (32.6%) had baseline symptoms, versus 255 (18.9%) of 1350 individuals with short illness (p<0.0001). Baseline symptoms doubled the odds ratio for long illness (2.14, 95% CI 1.78-2.57). Prior comorbidities were more common in individuals with long versus short illness. In individuals with long illness, baseline symptomatic ( versus asymptomatic) individuals were more likely to be female, younger, and have prior comorbidities; and baseline and post-acute symptoms, and symptom burden, correlated strongly., Conclusions: Individuals experiencing symptoms before COVID-19 had longer illness duration and increased odds of long illness.
