This essay aims to analyze the case of the Veronica Mars Movie Project crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter and the debate that sparked among television critics, academics, and experts. The first part describes the context of the VM project; the second part summarizes and analyzes the main issues that emerged from the debate, from the ambiguous position of the production company, Warner Bros., to he problematic involvement of money within the framework of fan practices. Using the Veronica Mars Movie Project as a case study, this essay focuses on the conflict between the principles of Kickstarter and the corporate interests of the entertainment industry, and it raises questions about the blurried boundaries between legitimate fan involvement and fandom exploitation., Cinergie – Il Cinema e le altre Arti, No 4 (2013)

Lo scenario della serialità contemporanea si contraddistingue per un’ampia diversificazione dei contenuti, conseguenza di un sistema produttivo e distributivo frammentato e sempre più competitivo. L’arrivo sul campo di Netflix e di altre piattaforme over-the-top ha modificato le modalità di fruizione, ma sta contribuendo a cambiare anche i processi creativi di messa in forma delle serie. Ciò spinge gli addetti ai lavori a riflettere sulle possibili direzioni future non solo del sistema industriale, ma degli elementi strutturali della serialità per come la conosciamo. Di fronte alla sovrabbondanza di prodotti seriali, si rivela difficile generalizzare e fare previsioni univoche: è possibile però rintracciare alcune tendenze peculiari del panorama attuale, che in alcuni casi sembrano confermare grosse scosse strutturali, in altri esibiscono invece continuità con il passato., The landscape of contemporary TV series is highly diversified: the increase of competition and fragmentation, the impact of alternative distribution services, such as Netflix, lead consumption modes and creative processes to new, unpredictable directions. In such a competitive scenario, creative issues intertwine with commercial ones, while scolars, critics and experts raise questions about the future architectures of serial narratives, which seem impossible to predict. However, it is possible to identify trends and motifs that sometimes confirm huge changes to come, and sometimes strongly contradict them.
