Addressing the dual challenges of antimicrobial resistance and pharmaceutical contamination in wastewater is crucial for global health and environmental preservation. Predictions estimate up to 10 million annual deaths by 2050 due to antimicrobial resistance, underscoring the urgent need for innovative solutions. This study explores the potential of zinc oxide Sub-Microparticles (ZnO SMPs) doped with iron (Fe) to enhance the photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical compounds in water and improve antimicrobial efficacy. A green laser-assisted chemical bath synthesis method created ZnO SMPs with varying Fe dopant concentrations (1 %, 1.5 %, and 3 %). The synthesized Sub-Microparticles underwent rigorous structural analysis using X-ray diffractometry, SEM, EDX, FTIR, and UV–visible spectrophotometry techniques. Their photocatalytic performance was evaluated in the degradation of paracetamol under blue laser light, and their antimicrobial properties were assessed following CLSI guidelines. Structural analyses confirmed the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO SMPs, with noticeable changes due to Fe doping, including a transition from sub-microrods to sub-microsheets and a redshift in the optical band gap. Photocatalytic tests revealed a significant enhancement in paracetamol degradation efficiency, increasing from 53.41 % with pure ZnO to 98.99 % with 3 % Fe-doped ZnO in 50 min. Antimicrobial assays demonstrated an increased inhibitory effect against pathogens, with Fe-doped ZnO outperforming control discs. This study substantiates the potential of Fe-doped ZnO SMPs in wastewater treatment and antimicrobial applications, showcasing significant improvements in photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical compounds and antimicrobial efficacy. The findings underscore the importance of continuing research in this domain for environmental and public health benefits.

Phytochemicals and other natural products have been suggested to be effective adjuvants to conventional therapy to reduce potential side effects that arise from cancer treatments. Various natural compounds and synthetic analogues have been studied for their potential anti-cancer properties in the last decade. Prior to administering them to patients in a clinical setting, drug development necessitates a sequence of preclinical testing, beginning with in vitro and progressing to in vivo studies. While numerous drugs and plant extracts were reported to be active in vitro, only several of them had reproducible activity at the tested doses in vivo. Furthermore, breakthroughs in manipulating gene editing have aided scientists in accurately replicating human diseases in animal models. Therefore, during drug development, in vivo studies are of tremendous help in evaluating a drug candidate's safety, toxicity, and efficacy in complex physiological and biochemical states. Hence, for this purpose, it is crucial to apply and select the animal model that is the most suitable to represent the studied disease or biological process. The current review summarizes various animal models that have been considered for in vivo testing, their advantages and disadvantages, and the experimental guidelines for conducting animal studies.

This study investigates the effects of boron concentration on boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes for electrochemical sensors of ciprofloxacin. The effects of boron concentration, scan rate, and pH of BDD electrodes with boron concentrations of 0.1, 0.5, and 1% were examined to determine the optimal conditions. Furthermore, square wave voltammetry (SWV) in phosphate buffer pH 7 was used to analyze the electrochemical behavior of ciprofloxacin. The results revealed a linear calibration curve in the concentration range of 30–100 μM with a recovery of 85–110%. Meanwhile, BDD electrode with the highest boron concentration in this experiment (1%) showed a very low limit of detection of 0.17 μM, meaning that 1% BDD gave a highly sensitive and significant measurement result for the electrochemical sensor of ciprofloxacin. With the results given, this study provides new insights for controlling boron concentrations in diamond electrodes for the electrochemical sensors of quinolone antibiotics.

Laser-Assisted Chemical Bath Synthesis (LACBS) was used to fabricate pure and magnesium-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles. Analysis of these nanoparticles' structural, morphological, optical, and antimicrobial characteristics was conducted. This analysis spanned across varying concentrations of magnesium-doped zinc oxide from 1 % to 3 %. XRD confirmed the nanoparticles' crystalline nature, revealing the hexagonal wurtzite phase. SEM analysis showcased their nanometric domain existence and hexagonal crystalline morphology, transforming from nanorods to nanotubes. Optical analysis showed band gap energy decrease from 3.27 to 2.85 eV correlating with the magnesium doping concentration increase. Optical absorption displayed a distinctive redshift for the nanoparticles as magnesium concentration increased from 1 % to 3 %. Photocatalytic assessments highlighted the superior degradation ability of 3 % Mg-doped nanoparticles, showing a 98.04 % degradation rate against methylene orange dye under blue light exposure. Antimicrobial activity tests against various pathogens showed that Mg ions' incorporation significantly enhanced antimicrobial performance, demonstrating the effectiveness of the LACBS method.

A tapered microfiber decorated with titanium dioxide-silicon dioxide nanocomposite saturable absorber (TiO2-SiO2-SA) is demonstrated via alkali fusion method and spin-coating technique. The TiO2-SiO2-SA exhibited 17.1% modulation depth, 31.7 µJ/cm2 saturation fluence and 35.4% non-saturable loss. The TiO2-SiO2-SA was able to generate a pulse duration of 797 fs at a repetition rate of 10.39 MHz and an average output power of 16.57 mW at 1.56 μm. This work presents an enhanced pulse duration within titanium-based saturable absorbers. The high damage threshold of beyond 24.82 GW/cm2 and excellent stability are believed to have opened a new route of using nanomaterials derived from waste product for next generation ultrafast photonic applications.

Conventional anti-cancer drugs, including doxorubicin, are associated with high toxicity and non-specific distribution in the body which results in a cascade of side effects. Cancer cells can utilize autophagy to promote tolerance to the stress induced by anti-cancer agents; this may be the major cause of drug resistance in advanced tumors. Owing to the molecular dynamism of cancer cells, targeting the pro-apoptotic survival pathways such as autophagy may increase the effectiveness of existing therapeutic agents at lower concentrations, thereby reducing the side effects of such agents. SAR405 is an inhibitor of autophagy activity due to its molecular interactions within the ATP binding site; however, it suffers from extracellular premature degradation and poor cellular uptake. Conversely, chitosan nanoparticles are considered biologically degradable, non-toxic, and biocompatible drug delivery agents that can be used to minimize the side effects of conventional therapeutic agents whilst increasing their intracellular uptake. In this study, a binary therapeutic strategy for the enhancement of the efficacy of doxorubicin while simultaneously inhibiting autophagy via a nano-mediated delivery system is reported. Autophagic inhibition was achieved via the improvement of SAR405 cellular uptake using SAR405-loaded chitosan nanoparticles. The synthesized nanoparticles were subsequently characterized for parameters of hydrodynamic diameter and polydispersity, while encapsulation and drug loading efficiencies were determined. Morphological characterization of the nanoparticles was elucidated using electron microscopy, and the cytotoxicity of the SAR405-loaded chitosan nanoparticles in combination treatments with doxorubicin was assessed through MTT and Annexin-v apoptosis assays. Autophagy progression through autophagosome formation was also evaluated using CYTO-ID staining. Following encapsulation, the size of the SAR405-loaded chitosan nanoparticles significantly increased from 54 nm to 161 nm at 10 µM SAR405 concentration, while the polydispersity index increased from 0.11 to 0.31 denoting presence of both encapsulated and unencapsulated moieties. When A549 lung cancer cells were treated with the IC50 values of doxorubicin in combination with SAR405-encapsulated CNP, an approximately 47% more reduction in cell viability was observed via the Annexin V-FITC/PI assay compared to using doxorubicin alone. Inhibition of autophagy was also detected in cells treated with SAR405 delivered using the nanoparticle system and was thought to be the primary reason towards a decrease in the resistance of the cancer cells to doxorubicin and thus increased its efficacy at lower concentrations. Therefore, this study has demonstrated a potential way of targeting cancer cell survival pathways that can be considered an effective way of increasing the efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women, and in 2020, there were 684, 996 deaths due to this disease. Epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) and their respective ligands have been blamed for the pathogenesis and resistance to treatment in specific breast cancer cases. With EGFR having four homologues: EGFR1, EGFR2, EGFR3, and EGFR4, in-depth understanding of EGFR biology led to the discovery of small-molecule inhibitors and antibodies against this receptor. Gefitinib (GEF), a tyrosine kinase inhibitor of EGFR1, possesses a vast potential for treatment against breast cancer and is supported by a multiplicity of experiments. Unfortunately, in clinical trials, GEF did not show the outcomes expected with complete response and disease progress. This is due to incomplete understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in EGFR signaling and endocrine sensitivity. Hence, additional in-depth experiments are needed regarding various molecular pathways and crosstalk pathways to comprehend GEF’s action mechanism thoroughly in breast cancer patients. In this review, the role of EGFR in the development and pathogenesis of breast cancer and the pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapy of GEF for the treatment of breast cancer have been elaborated. Nanomedicines synthesized with GEF have shown positive experimental response, paving a promising path for GEF against breast cancer.

Pure and Ni-doped (1%, 2%, and 3%) nanostructures were synthesized using a novel laser-assisted chemical bath synthesis (LACBS) technique. For the first time, LACBS was used to create a doping solution utilizing a 7 W blue laser with a 444.4 nm wavelength and a continuous beam. The Ni-doping concentration was varied by changing the amount of Ni precursor added. All samples were analyzed using XRD, SEM, EDX, FTIR, UV–Vis, and photocatalysis tests for photodegradation under blue laser illumination. XRD was used to confirm that the tested ZnO had a hexagonal wurtzite structure. The crystallite size decreased as the Ni-doping concentration rose. EDX experiments were conducted to analyze the elemental characteristics of the pure and Ni-doped (1%, 2%, and 3%) nanostructures. The existence of nanoscale hexagonal structures was confirmed through SEM studies. The band gap values of the pure and Ni-doped ZnO nanostructures decreased as the doping concentration increased. FTIR studies were conducted to examine the functional groups of the pure and doped samples. The produced materials exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance toward the degradation of MB organic dye, an example of a pollutant found in wastewater.

Since lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, research is being conducted to discover anticancer agents as its treatment. Eleutherine bulbosa, a Dayak folklore medicine, exhibited anticancer effects against several cancer cells; however, its anticancer potency against lung cancer cells has not been explored yet. This study aims to determine the anticancer potency of E. bulbosa bulbs against lung cancer cells (A549) using 2D and 3D culture models, as well as determine its active compounds using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Three fractions of E. bulbosa bulbs, namely chloroform, n-hexane, and ethyl acetate, were tested for cytotoxicity using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium-bromide (MTT) and CellTiter-Glo. The antiproliferative effects of the most cytotoxic fraction against the 2D culture model were determined by a clonogenic survival assay and propidium iodide/Hoechst 33342 double staining, whereas the effects against the 3D culture model were determined by microscopy, flow cytometry, and gene expression analysis. The chloroform fraction is the most cytotoxic against A549 cells than other fractions, and it inhibited colony formation and induced apoptosis of A549 cells. The chloroform fraction also inhibited the growth of the A549 spheroid by suppressing the spheroid size, inducing apoptosis, reducing the proportion of CD44 lung cancer stem cells, causing arrest at the S phase of the cell cycle, and suppressing the expression of the SOX2 and MYC genes. Furthermore, the GC-MS analysis detected 20 active compounds in the chloroform fraction, including the major compounds of eleutherine and isoeleutherine. In conclusion, the chloroform fraction of E. bulbosa bulbs exhibit its antiproliferative effect on 2D and 3D culture models of A549 cells, suggesting it could be a lung cancer chemopreventive agent.

Lung cancer is currently the most prevalent cause of cancer mortality due to late diagnosis and lack of curative therapies. Docetaxel (Dtx) is clinically proven as effective, but poor aqueous solubility and non-selective cytotoxicity limit its therapeutic efficacy. In this work, a nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) loaded with iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) and Dtx (Dtx-MNLC) was developed as a potential theranostic agent for lung cancer treatment. The amount of IONP and Dtx loaded into the Dtx-MNLC was quantified using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography. Dtx-MNLC was then subjected to an assessment of physicochemical characteristics, in vitro drug release, and cytotoxicity. Dtx loading percentage was determined at 3.98% w/w, and 0.36 mg/mL IONP was loaded into the Dtx-MNLC. The formulation showed a biphasic drug release in a simulated cancer cell microenvironment, where 40% of Dtx was released for the first 6 h, and 80% cumulative release was achieved after 48 h. Dtx-MNLC exhibited higher cytotoxicity to A549 cells than MRC5 in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, the toxicity of Dtx-MNLC to MRC5 was lower than the commercial formulation. In conclusion, Dtx-MNLC shows the efficacy to inhibit lung cancer cell growth, yet it reduced toxicity on healthy lung cells and is potentially capable as a theranostic agent for lung cancer treatment.

Abstract Background Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an opportunistic pathogen that causes severe complications in congenitally infected newborns and non-immunocompetent individuals. Developing an effective vaccine is a major public health priority and current drugs are fronting resistance and side effects on recipients. In the present study, with the aim of exploring new strategies to counteract CMV replication, several anti-CMV siRNAs targeting IE2 and DNA polymerase gene regions were characterized and used as in combinations for antiviral therapy. Methods The rat embryo fibroblast (REF) cells were transfected with multi siRNA before infecting with CMV strain ALL-03. Viral growth inhibition was measured by tissue culture infectious dose (TCID50), cytopathic effect (CPE) and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) while IE2 and DNA polymerase gene knockdown was determined by real-time PCR. Ganciclovir was deployed as a control to benchmark the efficacy of antiviral activities of respective individual siRNAs. Results There was no significant cytotoxicity encountered for all the combinations of siRNAs on REF cells analyzed by MTT colorimetric assay (P > 0.05). The unique properties of MXenes have been deemed to be of significant interest in various emerging applications. However, MXenes provide a major drawback involving environmentally harmful and toxic substances for its general fabrication in large-scale production and employing a high-temperature solid-state reaction followed by selective etching. Meanwhile, how MXenes are synthesized is essential in directing their end uses. Therefore, making strategic approaches to synthesize greener, safer, more sustainable, and more environmentally friendly MXenes is imperative to commercialize at a competitive price. With increasing reports of green synthesis that promote advanced technologies and non-toxic agents, it is critical to compile, summarize, and synthesize the latest development of the green-related technology of MXenes. We review the recent progress of greener, safer, and more sustainable MXene synthesis with a focus on the fundamental synthetic process, the mechanism, and the general advantages, and the emphasis on the MXene properties inherited from such green synthesis techniques. The emerging use of the so-called green MXenes in energy conversion and storage, environmental remediation, and biomedical applications is presented. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects of greener MXene synthesis are discussed.

The reduction of graphene oxide (rGO) utilizing green methods such as plants has attracted much attention due to its productivity, eco—friendly features, and cost effectiveness. In the present study, the reflux method was employed to synthesize Clinacanthus nutans (C. nutans) leaf extract mediated rGO using a simple approach. The synthesized rGO was characterized using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The UV-Vis spectrum demonstrated the absorption peak of rGO (270 nm) at distinct locations, while the FTIR analysis demonstrated that the amount of oxygen group in rGO was reduced. The Raman analysis confirms the reduction of GO by a slight increase in the D—band to G—band intensity ratio. The XRD spectra demonstrated that rGO was successfully produced based on the illustrated 2Ɵ angles at a peak of 22.12° with d-spacing of 0.40 nm. FESEM clearly reveals the morphology of rGO that shows crumpled thin sheets, a rougher surface, and a wave—shaped corrugated structure. The reduction of GO was analyzed in the removal of the hydroxyl group and amorphotization of sp2 carbon structures. The C/O ratio in rGO was higher than GO which indicates the small amount of oxygen-containing functional groups were still presented in the reduced graphene oxide. Furthermore, the cyclic voltammetry behavior of a modified screen—printed carbon electrode (SPCE) was measured. The redox reactivity of rGO—SPCE has been affirmed and compared with GO—SPCE and bare—SPCE. The toxicity using A. salina cysts demonstrated that rGO is less toxic compared to GO. The analysis adequately supports the synthesis of rGO and the effective removal of oxygen-containing functional groups from GO. The findings herein illustrate that C. nutans mediates the synthesis of rGO and is a promising eco-friendly substitute to conventional carbon-based fabrication.

Arsenic trioxide (As2O3) is a ubiquitous heavy metal in the environment. Exposure to this toxin at low concentrations is unremarkable in developing organisms. Nevertheless, understanding the underlying mechanism of its long-term adverse effects remains a challenge. In this study, embryos were initially exposed to As2O3 from gastrulation to hatching under semi-static conditions. Results showed dose-dependent increased mortality, with exposure to 30–40 µM As2O3 significantly reducing tail-coiling and heart rate at early larval stages. Surviving larvae after 30 µM As2O3 exposure showed deficits in motor behavior without impairment of anxiety-like responses at 6 dpf and a slight impairment in color preference behavior at 11 dpf, which was later evident in adulthood. As2O3 also altered locomotor function, with a loss of directional and color preference in adult zebrafish, which correlated with changes in transcriptional regulation of adsl, shank3a, and tsc1b genes. During these processes, As2O3 mainly induced metabolic changes in lipids, particularly arachidonic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, prostaglandin, and sphinganine-1-phosphate in the post-hatching period of zebrafish. Overall, this study provides new insight into the potential mechanism of arsenic toxicity leading to long-term learning impairment in zebrafish and may benefit future risk assessments of other environmental toxins of concern.

Covalent organic frameworks are porous crystalline compounds made up of organic material bonded together by strong reversible covalent bonds (these are novel types of materials which have the processability of extended or repeated structures with high performance, like those of thermosets and thermoplastics that produce high surface coverage). These have a long-term effect on an arrangement’s geometry and permeability. These compounds are entirely made up of light elements like H, B, C, N, O and Si. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have emerged as a new threatened species. A hazardous substance known as an “emerging toxin,” such as naproxen, is one that has been established or is generated in sufficient amounts in an environment, creating permanent damage to organisms. COF-S7, OAPS and 2-methylanthraquionone(2-MeAQ), and COF-S12, OAPS and terephthalaldehyde (TPA) were effectively synthesized by condensation (solvothermal) via a Schiff base reaction (R1R2C=NR′), with a molar ratio of 1:8 for OAPS to linker (L1 and L2), at a temperature of 125 °C and 100 °C for COF-S7 and COF-S12, respectively. The compounds obtained were assessed using several spectroscopy techniques, which revealed azomethine C=N bonds, aromatic carbon environments via solid 13C and 29Si NMR, the morphological structure and porosity, and the thermostability of these materials. The remedied effluent was investigated, and a substantial execution was noted in the removal ability of the naproxen over synthesized materials, such as 70% and 86% at a contact time of 210 min and 270 min, respectively, at a constant dose of 0.05 g and pH 7. The maximum adsorption abilities of the substances were found to be 35 mg/g and 42 mg/g. The pH result implies that there is stable exclusion with a rise in pH to 9. At pH 9, the drop significance was attained for COF-S7 with the exception of COF-S12, which was detected at pH 11, due to the negative Foster charge, consequent to the repulsion among the synthesized COFs and naproxen solution. From the isotherms acquired (Langmuir and Freundlich), the substances displayed a higher value (close to 1) of correlation coefficient (R2), which showed that the substances fit into the Freundlich isotherm (heterogenous process), and the value of heterogeneity process (n) achieved (less than 1) specifies that the adsorption is a chemical process. Analysis of the as-prepared composites revealed remarkable reusability in the elimination of naproxen by adsorption. Due to its convenience of synthesis, significant adsorption effectiveness, and remarkable reusability, the as-synthesized COFs are expected to be able to be used as potential adsorbents for eliminating AIDs from water.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are becoming more prevalent in athletes. Anterior Cruciatum Ligament Reconstruction (ACLR) surgery was used to treat ACL injuries and resulted in a recurrence rate of 94% due to the biomechanically repaired tissue being weaker than the original tissue. As a result, biodegradable artificial ligaments must be developed that can withstand mechanical stress during neoligament formation and stabilize the ACL. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of composition variations in polylactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) used as ACL nanofiber scaffolds on ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and modulus of elasticity, fiber diameter, cytotoxicity level, and degradation level, as well as the PLA-PCL concentration that provides the best value as an ACL scaffold. Electrospinning was used to fabricate the nanofiber scaffold with the following PLA-PCL compositions: A (100:0), B (85:15), C (80:20), D (70:30), and E (0:100) (wt%). The functional group test revealed no new peaks in any of the samples, and the ester group could be identified in the C-O bond at wave numbers 1300–1100 cm−1 and in the C=O bond at wave numbers 1750–1730 cm−1. The average fiber diameter, as determined by SEM morphology, is between 1000 and 2000 nm. The unbraided sample had a UTS range of 1.578–4.387 MPa and an elastic modulus range of 8.351–141.901 MPa, respectively, whereas the braided sample had a range of 0.879–1.863 MPa and 2.739–4.746 MPa. The higher the PCL composition, the lower the percentage of viable cells and the faster the sample degrades. All samples had a cell viability percentage greater than 60%, and samples C, D, and E had a complete degradation period greater than six months. The ideal scaffold, Sample C, was composed of PLA-PCL 80:20 (wt%), had an average fiber diameter of 827 ± 271 nm, a living cell percentage of 97.416 ± 5.079, and a degradation time of approximately 219 days.

This paper reported the formation of biphasic hydroxyapatite, (HA) and β-tricalcium phosphate, (β-TCP) sintered at various sintering temperature from waste material. The phase stability of HA ceramic was investigated by imposing the high sintering temperature in order to study the transformation of the single phase of HA to biphasic HA/β-TCP ceramic. The evolution microstructure of HA and biphasic HA/β-TCP ceramic was studied at various sintering temperature reach up to 1400 °C. The single phase of HA was observed from 200 to 1200 °C and the secondary phase β-TCP appears due to the decomposition of partial HA at 1300–1400 °C. The optimum temperature for a single phase of HA was identified after sintering at 1200 °C to produce HA with high mechanical hardness about 5.11 GPa. This is clearly related to the phase stability and morphology of HA. The particles size of HA as-synthesized were recorded in nano range scale at ∼9 to 20 nm. However, the average particle sizes become larger and compact between ∼0.21 and ∼3.3 μm from 600 to 1200 °C. Thus, the sintering temperature gives an impact on the phase stability, microstructure and microhardness of HA derived from high potential waste sources. In this study, the Aluminium Nitride/Gallium Nitride (AlN/GaN) layers and Aluminium Nitride/Aluminium Gallium Nitride/Gallium Nitride (AlN/AlGaN/GaN) layer heterostructures were successfully created using technique known as plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on silicon substrate. Gallium (7 N) and Aluminium (6 N5) of high purity were used to grow GaN, AlN and AlGaN respectively. The structural and optical properties of the prepared AlN/GaN and AlN/AlGaN/GaN layer heterostructures were investigated by means of atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and Raman spectroscopy. AFM measurement demonstrated that the root mean square of surface roughness for AlN/GaN and AlN/AlGaN/GaN heterostructures are 3.677 nm and 10.333 nm respectively. XRD data indicated that the samples have typical diffraction pattern of hexagonal structure. Raman spectra revealed all four Raman-active modes present inside both samples. PL spectra data showed the yellow luminescence which corresponds to the deep energy levels due to imperfections of AlN did not appear. Thus, PL observation indicated that the thin film of AlN/GaN and AlN/AlGaN/GaN layers have good optical quality and looks promising for various target applications in optoelectronics, photovoltaic and radiofrequency applications. Currently, magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) was extensively used in industries and agriculture. However, fewer studies have been conducted on the interaction between these nanomaterials and plants. With that, the work focused on the toxicity evaluation of Fe3O4 NPs towards the growth, leaf gas exchange and biochemical of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). Oil palm seedlings were grown in soil and treated with different concentrations of Fe3O4 NPs (0, 800, 1600, 2400 mg/L) for 30 days of exposure. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated three times. The study revealed that Fe3O4 NPs did not affect the plant growth but significantly (p ≤ 0.05) affected the leaf gas exchange and biochemical responses. Total chlorophyll content and leaf total stomata densities of seedlings were significantly decreased with Fe3O4 NPs, in particular with the higher Fe3O4 NPs concentration. The results showed that Fe3O4 NPs negatively affected the leaf gas exchange characteristics of seedlings as compared to the control. The Fe3O4 NPs increased the production of total flavonoids, total phenolics, proline, soluble sugar and malondialdehyde (MDA) in Fe3O4 NPs-stressed seedlings leaves extracts. Correlation analysis showed that net photosynthesis rate (A) has a significant positive correlation with leaf gas exchange traits. This showed that the reduction of leaf gas exchange performance of oil palm seedlings under elevated Fe3O4 NPs concentration might be due to decreasing of A in oil palm seedlings exposed to high Fe3O4 NPs concentration. The concentration of iron (Fe) in leaves was significantly increased with Fe3O4 NPs application. In comparison to the control (0 mg/L), the Fe content in the leaves was increased by 52% when the seedlings were treated with the highest Fe3O4 NPs concentration (2400 mg/L). Overall, a high application of Fe3O4 NPs has induced plant stress, which further affected its growth and development at phenotypic and physiological levels.

Current research focusing on the loading of Iron (III) oxide (IO) onto graphene oxide (GO) via simple emulsion technique. GO specialty such as big surface to volume ratio combined with magnetic nanoparticle superparamagnetic properties produce interesting nanocomposite material for biomedical application. Proper modification was carried out by simply varying the ratios of GO to IO ranging from 1:1 to 1:3 to discover the best amount of IO suitable to be loaded on GO. In addition, the prepared nanocomposites crystallinity, chemical interaction, structure, surface morphology and magnetic behaviour were investigated using various equipment such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy (RAMAN), Vibrating Sample Magnetization (VSM), and Atomic force microscopy (AFM). The magnetic nanoparticle synthesized via co-precipitation method found to be Iron (iii) oxide. IO loaded with GO were validated to be superparamagnetic with maximum magnetic saturation measured at the ratio of GO to IO of 1:2. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles and TiO2 with recycled graphite (TiO2/G) nanocomposite have been successfully synthesized by alkaline fusion method using synthetic rutile for measuring the degradation time of the cigarette smoke under the visible light irradiation. In this work, the synthetic rutile was derived from natural Malaysian Ilmenite’s waste to produce a low cost of TiO2 nanoparticles via environmental friendly process. The prepared samples were then analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) to study their structural phase composition, functional group, and elemental composition respectively. The surface morphology and the size of the particles were studied using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), respectively. The functionality of the prepared nanoparticles in terms of photocatalyst activity was analyzed by degradation of cigarette smoke under the exposure to the visible light. The UV–Vis Spectroscopy (UV–VIS) results revealed that the energy band gap of modified TiO2/G nanocomposite decreases to 2.90 eV compared with the commercial TiO2, 3.06 eV. This is capable enough to TiO2/G nanocomposite degrade the smoke under the visible light irradiation for 2 min faster compared to others types of TiO2 nanoparticles. Graphene, a remarkable material, is ideal for numerous applications due to its thin and lightweight design. The synthesis of high-quality graphene in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner continues to be a significant challenge. Chemical reduction is considered the most advantageous method for preparing reduced graphene oxide (rGO). However, this process necessitates the use of toxic and harmful substances, which can have a detrimental effect on the environment and human health. Thus, to accomplish the objective, the green synthesis principle has prompted researchers worldwide to develop a simple method for the green reduction of graphene oxide (GO), which is readily accessible, sustainable, economical, renewable, and environmentally friendly. For example, the use of natural materials such as plants is generally considered safe. Furthermore, plants contain reducing and capping agents. The current review focuses on the discovery and application of rGO synthesis using extracts from different plant parts. The review aims to aid current and future researchers in searching for a novel plant extract that acts as a reductant in the green synthesis of rGO, as well as its potential application in a variety of industries.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been employed in various fields of biotechnology due to their proven properties as an antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agent. AgNPs are generally synthesized through chemical, physical and biological approaches involving a myriad of methods. As each approach confers unique advantages and challenges, a trends analysis of literature for the AgNPs synthesis using different types of synthesis were also reviewed through a bibliometric approach. A sum of 10,278 publications were analyzed on the annual numbers of publication relating to AgNPs and biological, chemical or physical synthesis from 2010 to 2020 using Microsoft Excel applied to the Scopus publication database. Furthermore, another bibliometric clustering and mapping software were used to study the occurrences of author keywords on the biomedical applications of biosynthesized AgNPs and a total collection of 224 documents were found, sourced from articles, reviews, book chapters, conference papers and reviews. AgNPs provides an excellent, dependable, and effective solution for seven major concerns: as antibacterial, antiviral, anticancer, bone healing, bone cement, dental applications and wound healing. In recent years, AgNPs have been employed in biomedical sector due to their antibacterial, antiviral and anticancer properties. This review discussed on the types of synthesis, how AgNPs are characterized and their applications in biomedical field.

This study investigated the effect of the addition of montmorillonite into a hydroxyapatite nanocomposite for biomedical application. Hydroxyapatite (HA)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposite was prepared using a powder sintering technique at 800 °C for 2 h. The specific surface area and pore volume were found to decrease linearly with the addition of MMT. The addition of 10–20% MMT led to a more homogeneous pore size distribution, which resulted in an increase in flexural strength by 18.9–17.1% and an increase in compressive strength by 107.9–63.1%. However, further addition of 30–60% MMT led to a less homogeneous pore size distribution, resulting in a decrease in flexural and compressive strength. The homogeneity of the pore size distribution was found to offer significant control over the strength of the nanocomposites. The addition of MMT resulted in the presence of an anhydrite phase, and this phase is useful to enhance the bioactivity of the nanocomposite. This study shows that the addition of MMT to HA for the formation of HA/MMT nanocomposite has a beneficial effect and has the potential to be used as a biomaterial, especially for non-load bearing sites in bone substitutions. A binary (CuO)0.6 (CeO2)0.4 nanoparticles were prepared via thermal treatment method, using copper nitrate, cerium nitrate as precursors, PVP as capping agent and de-ionized water as a solvent. The structures, morphology, composition of the element and optical properties of these nanoparticles have been studied under different temperatures using various techniques. The XRD spectrum of the samples at 500 °C and above confirmed the existence of both monoclinic (CuO) and cubic fluorite (CeO2) structures. The findings of FESEM and TEM exhibited the average practical size and agglomeration increment with an elevation in the calcination temperature. The synthesized nanoparticles were also characterized by FTIR, which indicated the formation of binary Cu−O and Ce−O bonds. The EDX analysis was performed to indicate the chemical composition of the sample. The double energy band gaps of (CuO)0.6(CeO2)0.4 reduction with rising calcination temperature, can be referred to the enhancement of the crystallinity of the samples. PL intensity of (CuO)0.6(CeO2)0.4 nanoparticles peaks, which increased with the elevation of the calcination temperature to 800 °C was observed from the PL spectrum; this was due to the increment of the particle size that occurred. Orf virus (ORFV), the prototype species of the parapoxvirus genus, is the causative agent of contagious ecthyma, an extremely devastating skin disease of sheep, goats, and humans that causes enormous economic losses in livestock production. ORFV is known for its ability to repeatedly infect both previously infected and vaccinated sheep due to several immunomodulatory genes encoded by the virus that temporarily suppress host immunity. Therefore, the development of novel, safe and effective vaccines against ORFV infection is an important priority. Although, the commercially licensed live-attenuated vaccines have provided partial protection against ORFV infections, the attenuated viruses have been associated with major safety concerns. In addition to safety issues, the persistent reinfection of vaccinated animals warrants the need to investigate several factors that may affect vaccine efficacy. Perhaps, the reason for the failure of the vaccine is due to the long-term adaptation of the virus in tissue culture. In recent years, the development of vaccines against ORFV infection has achieved great success due to technological advances in recombinant DNA technologies, which have opened a pathway for the development of vaccine candidates that elicit robust immunity. In this review, we present current knowledge on immune responses elicited by ORFV, with particular attention to the effects of the viral immunomodulators on the host immune system. We also discuss the implications of strain variation for the development of rational vaccines. Finally, the review will also aim to demonstrate future strategies for the development of safe and efficient vaccines against ORFV infections.

Calcium carbonate has slowly paved its way into the field of nanomaterial research due to its inherent properties: biocompatibility, pH-sensitivity, and slow biodegradability. In our efforts to synthesize calcium carbonate nanoparticles (CSCaCO3NP) from blood cockle shells (Anadara granosa), we developed a simple method to synthesize CSCaCO3NP, and loaded them with gefitinib (GEF) and paclitaxel (PTXL) to produce mono drug-loaded GEF-CSCaCO3NP, PTXL-CSCaCO3NP, and dual drug-loaded GEF-PTXL-CSCaCO3NP without usage of toxic chemicals. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results reveal that the drugs are bound to CSCaCO3NP. Scanning electron microscopy studies reveal that the CSCaCO3NP, GEF-CSCaCO3NP, PTXL-CSCaCO3NP, and GEF-PTXL-CSCaCO3NP are almost spherical nanoparticles, with a diameter of 63.9 ± 22.3, 83.9 ± 28.2, 78.2 ± 26.4, and 87.2 ± 26.7 (nm), respectively. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and N2 adsorption-desorption experiments revealed that the synthesized nanoparticles are negatively charged and mesoporous, with surface areas ranging from ~8 to 10 (m2/g). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) confirms that the synthesized nanoparticles are aragonite. The CSCaCO3NP show excellent alkalinization property in plasma simulating conditions and greater solubility in a moderately acidic pH medium. The release of drugs from the nanoparticles showed zero order kinetics with a slow and sustained release. Therefore, the physico-chemical characteristics and in vitro findings suggest that the drug loaded CSCaCO3NP represent a promising drug delivery system to deliver GEF and PTXL against breast cancer.

The synthesis of CdSe nanoparticles was undertaken via the thermal treatment method at varying calcination temperatures from 450 to 700 °C in alternate oxygen and nitrogen environment. Selenium powder was dissolved in ethylenediamine at 200 °C for 2 h before mixing with the metal precursor, cadmium nitrate and the capping agent polyvinylpyrrolidone to materialize the CdSe nanoparticles upon calcination. A series of measurements were employed to analyze the structural, elemental and optical properties of the attained nanoparticles at room temperatures using FTIR, XRD, EDX, SEM and TEM spectroscopies. XRD patterns and FTIR spectra revealed of the fact that, prior to calcination, an amorphous phase of the unheated material has taken shape, which after calcination achieved the crystalline structure of CdSe nanoparticles. The CdSe nanoparticle samples confirmed to be pure cadmium and selenium through EDX and FTIR analyses. The TEM images showed that as the calcination temperature raised from 450 to 700 °C the average particle size increased from 11 to 32 nm and the optical band gap energy decreased from 2.36 to 1.80 eV. In this research, the structural and optical properties of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) thin film were successfully deposited on various substrates including silicon (Si), sapphire (Al2O3), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene carbonate (PPC) by Radio Frequency (RF) sputtering technique. In this project, the structural and optical properties of the samples were studied by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman Spectroscopy, and Photoluminescence (PL). The XRD test revealed that the samples have a wurtzite structure as the peaks dominated by ZnO (0 0 2). AFM test found out that root mean square (rms) for thin film samples ranging from 1 to 8 nm. Raman spectra detected the existence of certain Raman-active modes inside the samples. In PL spectra, the peak emissions observed for all the ZnO thin film samples ranging around 376.05–381.5 nm, thus closer to the pure ZnO. Through the FESEM image, most of the samples except ZnO/PPC sample showed the granular surface morphology, while the ZnO/PPC sample revealed the hexagonal like shapes with uniform distribution. In the current era of globalization, synthetic dyes are one of the key factors of water pollution. Photocatalysis constitutes a promising technology for the treatment of wastewater, especially to those containing hard-to-remove organic compounds. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) play a vital role as a photocatalyst material. This research highlights the synthesized ZnONPs with roselle flower and oil palm leaf extract. The extracts and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) act as reducing agents during the synthesis process. Synthesis without the addition of plant extract is used as blank control for the experiment. Structural and optical studies of the three variants of ZnONPs were performed. High purity of ZnONPs with element Zn and O was obtained. The size of the three variants of ZnONPs was from 10–15 nm and found in agglomerated spherical shape. Large band gap, 3.2 eV was obtained by UV-Vis and high thermal stability was proven by TGA. Oxygen vacancies that assist in the degradation phenomenon were found in ZnONPs. Five percent of ZnONPs with the presence of 10 W UV light could effectively degrade 10 ppm MO in 5 h and MB in 3 h. Besides, high antioxidant properties and low toxicity demonstrated the ability of ZnONPs to be used as photocatalysts. In conclusion, ZnONPs can be further developed for pharmaceutical and industrial use.

Synthetic scaffolding for bone tissue engineering (BTE) has been widely utilized. The scaffold for BTE requires sufficient porosity as a template for bone cell development and growth so that it can be used in the treatment of bone defects and fractures. Nevertheless, the porosity significantly influences the compressive strength of the scaffold. Hence, controlling the porosity is a pivotal role to obtain a proper scaffold for practical BTE application. Herein, we fabricated the nanocomposite-based scaffold utilizing nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA). The scaffold was prepared in combination with chitosan (Ch) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The ratios of n-HA, Ch, and CMC used were 40:60:0, 40:55:5, 40:50:10, 40:45:15, and 40:40:20, respectively. By controlling the Ch and CMC composition, we can tune the porosity of the nanocomposite. We found that the interpolation of the CMC prevails, as a crosslinker reinforces the nanocomposite. In addition, the binding to Ch enhanced the compressive strength of the scaffold. Thermal characteristics revealed the coefficient of thermal expansion decreases with increasing CMC content. The nanocomposite does not expand at 25–75 °C, which is suitable for human body temperature. Therefore, this nanocomposite-based scaffold is feasible for BTE application.

A hydroxyapatite scaffold is a suitable biomaterial for bone tissue engineering due to its chemical component which mimics native bone. Electronic states which present on the surface of hydroxyapatite have the potential to be used to promote the adsorption or transduction of biomolecules such as protein or DNA. This study aimed to compare the morphology and bioactivity of sinter and nonsinter marine-based hydroxyapatite scaffolds. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and micro-computed tomography (microCT) were used to characterize the morphology of both scaffolds. Scaffolds were co-cultured with 5 × 104/cm2 of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cells for 7, 14, and 21 days. FESEM was used to observe the cell morphology, and MTT and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assays were conducted to determine the cell viability and differentiation capacity of cells on both scaffolds. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR) was used to identify the expression of osteoblast markers. The sinter scaffold had a porous microstructure with the presence of interconnected pores as compared with the nonsinter scaffold. This sinter scaffold also significantly supported viability and differentiation of the MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cells (p < 0.05). The marked expression of Col1α1 and osteocalcin (OCN) osteoblast markers were also observed after 14 days of incubation (p < 0.05). The sinter scaffold supported attachment, viability, and differentiation of preosteoblast cells. Hence, sinter hydroxyapatite scaffold from nacreous layer is a promising biomaterial for bone tissue engineering.

Christia vespertilionis, commonly known as ‘Daun Rerama’, has recently garnered attention from numerous sources in Malaysia as an alternative treatment. Its herbal decoction was believed to show anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. The present study investigated the cytotoxicity of the extract of root and leaf of C. vespertilionis. The plant parts were successively extracted using the solvent maceration method. The most active extract was further fractionated to afford F1–F8. The cytotoxic effects were determined using MTT assay against human breast carcinoma cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231). The total phenolic content (TPC) of the extracts were determined. The antioxidant properties of the extract were also studied using DPPH and β-carotene bleaching assays. The ethyl acetate root extract demonstrated selective cytotoxicity especially against MDA-MB-231 with the highest TPC and antioxidant properties compared to others (p < 0.05). The TPC and antioxidant results suggest the contribution of phenolic compounds toward its antioxidant strength leading to significant cytotoxicity. F3 showed potent cytotoxic effects while F4 showed better antioxidative strength compared to others (p < 0.05). Qualitative phytochemical screening of the most active fraction, F3, suggested the presence of flavonoids, coumarins and quinones to be responsible toward the cytotoxicity. The study showed the root extracts of C. vespertilionis to possess notable anti-breast cancer effects.
