Proprioception is the sense of position and movement of body segments. The widespread distribution of proprioceptors in human anatomy raises questions about proprioceptive uniformity across different body parts. For the upper limbs, previous research, using mostly active and/or contralateral matching tasks, has suggested better proprioception of the non-preferred arm, and at the elbow rather than the wrist. Here we assessed proprioceptive perception through an ipsilateral passive matching task by comparing the elbow and wrist joints of the preferred and non-preferred arms. We hypothesized that upper limb proprioception would be better at the elbow of the non-preferred arm. We found signed errors to be less variable at the non-preferred elbow than at the preferred elbow and both wrists. Signed errors at the elbow were also more stable than at the wrist. Across individuals, signed errors at the preferred and non-preferred elbows were correlated. Also, variable signed errors at the preferred wrist, non-preferred wrist, and preferred elbow were correlated. These correlations suggest that an individual with relatively consistent matching errors at one joint may have relatively consistent matching errors at another joint. Our findings also support the view that proprioceptive perception varies across upper limb joints, meaning that a single joint assessment is insufficient to provide a general assessment of an individual’s proprioception.

In this paper, we introduce a neural network (NN) model named clone-based neural network (CbNN) to design associative memories. Neurons in CbNN can be cloned statically or dynamically which allows to increase the number of data that can be stored and retrieved. Thanks to their plasticity, CbNN can handle correlated information more robustly than existing models and thus provides better memory capacity. We experiment this model in encoded neural networks also known as Gripon–Berrou NNs. Numerical simulations demonstrate that memory and recall abilities of CbNN outperform state of the art for the same memory footprint.

La scoliose idiopathique de l’adolescence (SIA) est caractérisée par une déformation rachidienne tridimensionnelle particulièrement évolutive au moment de l’adolescence. Pour enrayer cette aggravation, le traitement orthopédique de choix est le corset réalisé sur mesure afin d’être ajusté à la morphologie rachidienne. Actuellement, ce sont les corsets de types rigides « passifs » ou « actifs » qui sont surtout utilisés. Mais, certaines idées novatrices plus souples, et donc respectueuses de la dynamique du rachis tout en étant associées au mouvement, apparaissent. Ces recherches sont également importantes pour diminuer l’impact du corset sur les aspects physiologiques et psychologiques qu’il peut engendrer. Le kinésithérapeute, qui connaît bien les différents types de corsets et leurs limites, pourra influencer le choix du médecin et adapter la rééducation afin d’offrir un traitement le plus adéquat possible au patient porteur d’une SIA.

La scoliose se caractérise par une déformation rachidienne dans les trois plans de l’espace. Cette pathologie orthopédique entraîne des modifications de la gestion du corps et de ses mécanismes intégratifs. De ce fait, la scoliose induit des stratégies adaptatives dans le comportement moteur des activités quotidiennes comme le contrôle postural et la locomotion. Toutes ces adaptations sont réalisées dans le but d’élaborer un mouvement fluide et harmonieux. Notre objectif est de tester deux mouvements perpendiculaires afin de confronter les conséquences de cette déformation tridimensionnelle en fonction du plan du mouvement. Les mouvements antéro-postérieur et médio-latéral s’opèrent par une gestion stratégique différentielle de l’organisation dynamique spatiale et temporelle. Cela se caractérise principalement par une asymétrie du comportement dynamique des membres inférieurs. La confrontation de nos résultats à la littérature permet de lier spécifiquement la production motrice à la courbure scoliotique. Cela laisse envisager l’évaluation et la rééducation du patient scoliotique par son adaptation comportementale dynamique.

Four phosphorylation procedures were used in the preparation and characterization of sundry steroid phosphate and phosphonate esters, as well as some P1,P2-disteroid pyrophosphates. An attempt to prepare cholest-3,5-dien-3-yl dialkyl phosphate by a vinylogous Perkow reaction from 6-bromocholest-4-en-3-one yielded only dienenones. As a model for P1,P2-disteroid pyrophosphate (and steroid phosphate) behavior in solution, the neutral crystalline complex 2,2′-bipyridine zinc P1,P2-bis(1-n-dodecyl)pyrophosphate was prepared and characterized.

Fertility outcome following laparoscopic myomectomy was evaluated. A prospective clinical study was carried out between October 1990 and October 1993 in 21 infertile patients who underwent laparoscopic myomectomy for a myoma measuring > or = 5 cm in diameter. The overall rate of intrauterine pregnancy was 33.3% (seven patients). Out of 12 patients with infertility factors associated with uterine myomas, three (25.0%) became pregnant, whereas four (44.4%) out of nine patients with no other associated infertility factor became pregnant. No uterine rupture was observed. Out of the seven pregnancies, four were spontaneous and began within 1 year of the operation. The other three were achieved after in-vitro fertilization in patients with associated infertility factors. In the four patients who gave birth by Caesarean section, no adhesions were found on the myomectomy scar. From these preliminary results, laparoscopic surgery for myomas seems to offer comparable results with those obtained by laparotomy.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a partial or complete absence (agenesis) of the uterus with an absent or hypoplastic vagina. Until now, the recommended treatment, when resection of a rudimentary horn was indicated, was laparotomy. We report a case of MRKH syndrome in which the patient benefited from laparoscopic surgery for bilateral resection of rudimentary horns. Laparoscopy is not only useful for diagnosis of uterine malformations but can also be valuable for any treatment required for this type of malformation, this being carried out during the same operative procedure, thus avoiding laparotomy for the patient. The creation of an artificial vagina is performed during a second operation.

A 31 year old patient presenting with primary infertility underwent an operative laparoscopy for the treatment of bilateral hydrosalpinges, during which a myomectomy was also performed. The uterus was repaired using interrupted sutures. At follow-up laparoscopy seven weeks later, a uterine fistula was diagnosed and was oversewn using a single 'figure of eight' suture. One year later the patient became pregnant through in-vitro fertilization. At 34 weeks gestation, she required an emergency laparotomy for acute abdominal pain and the presence of fetal bradycardia. The operative findings revealed a uterine rupture at the site of the previous myomectomy scar. This was then enlarged with a scalpel and a live baby was delivered. The uterus was repaired in two layers. The postoperative period for both mother and baby was satisfactory. This complication raises the problem of the quality of uterine repair following laparoscopic myomectomy, together with the question of how to prevent this type of life-threatening situation.
