Wildlife viewing is among the fastest growing outdoor recreation activities in the United States, with significant implications for the work of fish and wildlife agencies. Wildlife viewers are those who intentionally observe, feed, or photograph wildlife; travel to parks, protected areas, or other natural spaces with the purpose of feeding, observing, or photographing wildlife; and those who maintain plantings or natural areas for the benefit of wildlife. To better understand wildlife viewers in the United States, the Dayer Lab at Virginia Tech in collaboration with the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Wildlife Viewing and Nature Tourism Working Group conducted a survey of more than 4,000 wildlife viewers nationwide. The study fills an important knowledge gap for wildlife agencies and illuminates how to better engage this broad constituency of wildlife recreationists, increasing agency relevancy to a wider array of people who enjoy the outdoors. Specifically, this report examines: viewing and conservation behaviors of wildlife viewers; past and likelihood of future financial contributions to state agencies; perceptions of state agencies and their management for wildlife viewers; how to build relevancy with a broader audience of wildlife viewers; comparisons of wildlife viewers across the four AFWA regions; participation of consumptive and nonconsumptive wildlife viewers; and more. This report also conducts additional analysis between consumptive (those that also participate in hunting and angling) and nonconsumptive wildlife viewers (those who do not), and compares wildlife viewers based on their “R3” stage (recruited, retained, churned, and reactivated). To illustrate tangible results from managing wildlife viewing, this report also incorporates seven case studies from state agencies demonstrating successful approaches to engaging wildlife viewers. Finally, this report concludes with five key recommendations for state agencies to increase engagement and relevancy with wildlife viewers. A fauna silvestre representa uma importante fonte alimentar para as pessoas que vivem nas florestas tropicais, além também de ser bastante consumida nas áreas urbanas dessas regiões. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se fazer uma discussão do tema caça, através de resgate histórico dos estudos já realizados no Estado do Acre, bem como o modo como o tema vem se desenvolvendo no Acre como uma estratégia de desenvolvimento sustentável. Baseado nos trabalhos referentes à caça realizados no Acre e em outras regiões Amazônicas fazemos algumas recomendações para prioridades de pesquisa e políticas públicas relacionadas ao uso da fauna silvestre no Estado. The consumption of wild meat among young people is still a poorly studied universe, and there may be the possibility that young people influence eating habits within Amazonian families. Therefore, understanding the behavior and motivations that lead these young people to maintain or change their eating habits of consuming wild meat are relevant factors to generate guidelines for public actions and policies in an attempt to balance this habit with the conservation of wildlife and the guarantee food security of the populations inhabiting the Amazon region. This research aimed to evaluate the socioeconomic profile and the factors of changes in the consumption of wild animal meat among young people in the state of Amazonas. A semi-structured form was applied to 2760 students in 146 classrooms in the city of Manaus and in nine randomly selected municipalities along three rivers (Purus, Negro and Amazonas). The study demonstrates that the consumption of wild meat is part of the eating habits and food environment of young people in the state of Amazonas. Young people most likely to consume wild meat were those who lived in small towns, compared with those in medium-sized cities and Manaus, and those who migrated from rural to urban areas. These migrants were 60% more likely to consume wild meat when it was available and 67% more likely to taste it, compared with those who had always lived in urban areas. These results show that the demographic transition has great relevance in changing this eating habit. The results show that there is an effect of urbanization on changes in wild meat consumption among young people, where the probability of consumption decreases with the increase in the size of cities and with the availability of other foods. That is, even when wild meat is available at a meal, young people are deciding not to consume it and the probability of consumption decreases with the size of the city. This work shows that there is a trend towards a decrease in consumption by young people, compared to consumption at home. These results suggest that wildlife consumption may decline over generations if these youngsters continue to choose not to consume wild meat as they become adults. It is important that future studies investigate the motivations of these young people for not consuming wild meat (e.g., because they are concerned about conservation, or because they think that such meat is a rural tradition) to inform environmental education strategies that promote the conservation of wild fauna for these young people. Foi aplicado um formul??rio semiestruturado junto a 2760 estudantes em 146 salas de aula, na cidade de Manaus e em nove munic??pios selecionados aleatoriamente ao longo de tr??s rios (Purus, Negro e Amazonas). O estudo demonstra que o consumo de carne silvestre faz parte do h??bito alimentar e ambiente alimentar dos jovens no estado do Amazonas. Os jovens com maior probabilidade de consumir carne silvestre foram os que moram em cidades pequenas, comparados com aqueles de cidades m??dias e Manaus, e os que migraram de ??rea rural para ??rea urbana. Estes migrantes tiveram 60% maior probabilidade de consumir carne silvestre quando h?? disponibilidade e 67% maior prefer??ncia pelo sabor, comparados com aqueles que sempre moraram na zona urbana. Esses resultados, mostram que a transi????o demogr??fica tem grande relev??ncia na mudan??a desse h??bito alimentar. Os resultados apontam que h?? um efeito da urbaniza????o sobre as mudan??as no consumo de carne silvestre entre jovens, onde a probablidade de consumo diminui com o aumento do tamanho das cidades e com a disponibilidade de outros alimentos. Ou seja, mesmo quando h?? disponibilidade de carne silvestre em uma refei????o, os jovens est??o decidindo n??o consumir e a probabilidade de consumo diminui com o tamanho da cidade. Esse trabalho mostra que h?? uma tend??ncia de dimunui????o de consumo pelos jovens, comparados com o consumo no domic??lio. Esses resultados sugerem que o consumo de fauna silvestre talvez diminua com o passar das gera????es, se tais jovens continuem escolhendo n??o consumir carne silvestre ?? medida que se tornem adultos. ?? importante que futuros trabalhos investiguem as motiva????es desses jovens em n??o consumir carne silvestres (ex., por estarem preocupados com a conserva????o, ou por acharem que tal carne ?? uma tradi????o rural) para informar estrat??gias de educa????o ambiental que promova a conserva????o da fauna silvestre por esses jovens.
