14. Reinforcing folding board boxes by printing a PLA patterned grid on their panels: A new approach for lightweighting stiff packaging.

Abstract

The potential of printing stiffeners of polylactic acid (PLA) by fused deposition modelling (FDM) on the panels of folding board boxes was investigated in view of reducing the board weight while maintaining the box resistance to vertical compression. Cyclic loading and unloading compression tests were performed under standard (50% relative humidity [RH]) and humid (85% RH) environmental conditions on boxes printed with different grid patterns. By only adding 7% in weight of PLA to the whole packaging, the performance was improved by 29% under standard conditions and 60% under humid conditions when the inner surface of box panels was printed with an orthogonal‐type grid. A comparison with a higher basis weight folding board suggested that 30% of raw materials could be saved. Results suggested that the grid mainly improved the stiffness of panels and could delay their buckling and thus the box collapse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Six commercial oil-proof paper specimens, which had been manufactured with application of a new type of fluorochemical agent on their surface, were evaluated in terms of water- and oil-proof and printing properties.The new agent had been designed to comply with standards requiring six or fewer carbons in the perfluorinated alkyl chain. First, the paper samples were characterized in terms of classical properties, such as their thickness, density and ash content. The ashes were collected after the calcination of the paper samples and their contents were found to be around 15-17 wt%. The elemental analysis of these minerals indicated that they were inorganic fillers and pigments (Al- and Si-based). No traces of fluorine components were detected in this mineral part, because the fluorochemicals used in the oil-proof papers were organic-based molecules, which underwent total combustion during the calcination process. Stöckigt sizing and Cobb60 tests clarified that all the paper samples had certain levels of water-proof properties both on the non-coated and on the coated sides. On the other hand, the result of the Kit test indicated that the paper samples having fluorochemicals on the non-coated surfaces had a large oil-proof barrier. The XPS of the coated surface revealed that the binder used is most probably a styrene-butadiene-like polymer and that the pigments are kaolin, calcium carbonate or a mixture of the two. On the coated surfaces of all the paper samples, oily liquids did not penetrate into the coating layers, but spread rapidly over them. The ink porosimetry test by dye-type ink was adopted for the evaluation of ink absorption of the paper samples. On the coated surfaces, all the paper samples absorbed small quantities of ink. Although further investigation is required for better understanding the ink absorption mechanisms and the retention of dye components on the coated surfaces, this study proved that water- and oil-proof effects largely influenced the behaviors of dye-type ink absorption on the paper samples.

Abstract

International audience; Organic free electrodes for lithium ion batteries containing cellulose derivatives components as binding and disperser respectively, lithium iron phosphate as active material and carbon black as conductive agent were manufactured by means of a large scale technique as well as screen printing process onto a cellulosic based separator. Firstly a water based ink, was formulated and rheological properties were analyzed in order to investigate the role of each component in the ink. Electrical conductivity was tuned by adjusting the content of carbon black to insure electrical percolation. The electrode exhibits a capacity of 143 mAh/g at C/10, close to the nominal capacity of the lithium iron phosphate (150 mAh/g). At higher current rates a good retention capacity was observed with 107 mAh/g at C. Finally industrial scale printed electrodes were manufactured by means of an industrial printing machine onto a cellulose based separator. The electrodes exhibit a promising capacity of 129 mAh/g at C/10 and an electrical conductivity of 21 S/m. The industrial scale approach proposed here could be a viable route to the manufacturing of large scale and eco-sustainable electrodes.
