Black adolescents occupy one of the most precarious and marginalized social locations of society, yet they remain vigilant against oppression. Indeed, Black youth have a vast history of political action and activism around domestic and global issues. Existing scholarship frequently examines the sociocultural and cognitive factors associated with Black adolescents’ political and civic engagement and related outcomes. Lost in these interrogations is an examination of the psychological processes that undergird adolescents’ sociopolitical visions. To address this gap, this conceptual analysis examines political imagination and its role in Black adolescents’ sociopolitical development. Political imagination is the cognitive space and process where people consciously distance the present moment to engage, explore, examine, and (de)construct sociopolitical worlds or realities.

This study used a youth participatory action research (YPAR) approach to explore the meaning five Black boys make of race, identity, and oppression through their school experiences in a suburban high school. The first author developed, cofacilitated, and assumed the role of participant observer in a YPAR afterschool program aimed at promoting sociopolitical development. The participants completed photovoice projects identifying problems in and solutions for their school community. In their initial framing of the projects, they espoused a deficit narrative of Black student achievement, rooted in low public and private racial regard: Black students are not achieving. At the end of the program year, with the help of individual and group meaning-making in the YPAR program, some participant narratives shifted away from a deficit narrative, and two participants presented a counternarrative that emphasized the ways in which Black students are trying and achieving. These findings contribute to our understanding of how YPAR programs, as situated in liberation and transformative psychology, facilitate critical social analysis for Black boys. Furthermore, these findings contribute to the literature on the experiences of Black boys in suburban schools, through the voices and perspectives of the boys themselves.

This commentary engages the three elements of a social justice framework in the study of African American Boys and Men's (AABM) positive development, proposed by Barbarin, Tolan, and Gaylord-Harden (2019). In agreement with the importance of and in support of employing a social justice framework in developmental science, we offer theoretical and methodological options to advance each element. The options we describe are aimed at centering the humanity of AABM in the study of their development.

This article proposes photovoice as an innovative approach to group work with Black (K-12) youth in school settings. More specifically, this article focuses on how school counselors can use photovoice as a tool to address the race-related struggles (e.g., racial prejudice and discrimination) that Black students experience both inside and outside of school. Photovoice empowers students to take photos capturing issues of shared concern in and around their school and use as the basis of critical dialogue and collective action plans. The key features and stages of this approach are outlined. Implication for practice and future research are discussed.

Social identity theory maintains that one's self-concept is partially determined by the social groups to which the individual belongs. Using this as a theoretical framework, this study examined the relationship between multiple dimensions of institutional identity and self-esteem in 411 Black male college freshmen. It was hypothesized that self-esteem would be related to institutional identity and that there would be no differences in this relationship amongst students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and those attending Predominately White Institutions (PWIs). The results suggested that there was a relationship between self-esteem and institutional identity; however, this relationship varied according to institutional type. Although a sense of belonging predicted self-esteem in all institutions, perceptions of others' appraisal (public regard) of their institution predicted self-esteem in HBCU participants, while one's personal appraisal (private regard) of their institution predicted self-esteem in PWI participants. The self-concept of Black male freshmen at PWIs appears to be explained by an internalized appraisal of their institution, while the opposite occurs in Black male freshmen at HBCUs. Further investigation may also suggest a difference in this relationship according to different HBCUs. The Institutional Identity Scale is appended.

Black male adolescents face unique barriers in schools that may contribute to racial disparities in educational outcomes. Their social-cognitive strengths, however, influence their confidence to be academically successful despite these barriers. This study explored whether racial academic stereotypes and racial centrality were associated with and predicted school efficacy among 103 urban Black male adolescents. Findings indicated that racial centrality had the strongest relationship with and was the strongest predictor of school efficacy. Youth mentoring programs and educators who work with urban Black male adolescents play a key role in promoting and shaping their efficacious beliefs toward their academic success.

The infectious agent for African trypanosomiasis, Trypanosoma brucei, possesses a unique and essential translocase of the mitochondrial inner membrane, known as the TbTIM17 complex. TbTim17 associates with six small TbTims (TbTim9, TbTim10, TbTim11, TbTim12, TbTim13, and TbTim8/13). However, the interaction patterns of these smaller TbTims with each other and TbTim17 are not clear. Through yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) and co-immunoprecipitation analyses, we demonstrate that all six small TbTims interact with each other. Stronger interactions were found among TbTim8/13, TbTim9, and TbTim10. However, TbTim10 shows weaker associations with TbTim13, which has a stronger connection with TbTim17. Each of the small TbTims also interacts strongly with the C-terminal region of TbTim17. RNAi studies indicated that among all small TbTims, TbTim13 is most crucial for maintaining the steady-state levels of the TbTIM17 complex. Further analysis of the small TbTim complexes by size exclusion chromatography revealed that each small TbTim, except for TbTim13, is present in ~70 kDa complexes, possibly existing in heterohexameric forms. In contrast, TbTim13 is primarily present in the larger complex (>800 kDa) and co-fractionates with TbTim17. Altogether, our results demonstrate that, relative to other eukaryotes, the architecture and function of the small TbTim complexes are specific to T. brucei.
