Pre-weaning animals exit a flock through death induced by various reasons, causing significant economic losses to the goat producers. In this study, we investigated the survival from birth to weaning of Sirohi goat kids within framework of the survival analysis. Kid records were accessed from 1997 to 2017, with the information on 4417 pre-weaning animals of farmed Sirohi goat native to the Rajasthan State of India. A multivariable Cox regression was fitted to the data after checking the assumptions of regression. The explanatory variables were sex, type of birth, season of birth, birthweight, doe weight at kidding and year of birth. Model selection eliminated doe weight from the model, and sex, type of birth, season of birth, birthweight and year of birth were retained in the model. With model calibration also, these five covariates were retained in the model. The mortality on the first day after birth was 0.3%, constituting 3.5% of all pre-weaning mortality. The mortality until the end of weaning period was 7.8%. Regression analysis revealed that the higher birthweight at kidding was associated with reduced hazard of death among the kids. Male kids had higher hazards of death compared with female kids. The single-born kids had lower risks of death compared with twin-born kids after accounting for heterogeneity. The winter season had a very high adverse effect on the survival of the kids. With each passing year, risks of death decreased. The results of this study indicate that better survival of kids can be achieved by controlling both environmental and animal-related factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the political activity that takes place in Labasa, a town located on the North coast of Vanua Levu which is the second biggest island in the Fiji group, as of 1968. The composition of Labasa's population is multiracial. Of the town's 3400 people, roughly 68% are Indians, 15% are Fijians, 9% are part-Europeans, 5% are Europeans and 3% are Chinese. In a wider context, being part of the nation, Labasa contributes its own share in making and maintaining the law of the country. The activities of formal legislative bodies and the associated leadership and parties are one set of foci through which the political processes can be understood. However, within the microcosm of the settlement, leadership, factions, and cliques associated with voluntary clubs and socio-religious organizations, provide miniature fields for a similar kind of political activity. Labasa is not a separate political entity in itself. It is related to the regional and Fiji-wide political system. However, there are four different contexts of political activities, and their degree of self-sufficiency as well as their dependence on the larger network of the political system as a whole varies in each case.

The article discusses a study conducted to determine the effect of different filtration methods viz. sephadex, sephadex-ion exchanger and Vitamin E pretreated sephdex-ion exchanger on the quality of low grade ejaculates of crossbred bull semen. The study was made on 20 low grade ejaculates of 4 crossbred bulls kept at Artificial Breeding Comples of Karnal, India. It concludes that filtered semen ejaculate with improved quality lead in better freezability characteristics.

However, efficient delivery remains a significant challenge. This is where nanoparticles come into play, emerging as powerful allies in the realm of drug delivery. Nanoparticles can accommodate larger insertion sizes, enabling the incorporation of larger Cas9 enzymes and complex guide RNAs, thus opening up the possibility of editing previously inaccessible genetic regions. Their relatively straightforward and scalable production processes make them cost-effective options for wider applications. Notably, nanoparticles excel in vivo, demonstrating efficient tissue penetration and targeted delivery, which are crucial for maximizing therapeutic impact while minimizing side effects. This review aims to explore the potential of nanoparticle-based delivery systems for CRISPR/Cas9, highlighting their advantages and challenges in gene editing applications. The diverse range of nanoparticles further bolsters their potential. Polymeric nanoparticles, for instance, offer tunable properties for customization and controlled release of the CRISPR cargo. Lipid-based nanoparticles facilitate efficient cellular uptake and endosomal escape, ensuring the CRISPR components reach the target DNA. Even gold nanoparticles, known for their unique biocompatibility and photothermal properties, hold promise in light-activated editing strategies. Non-viral delivery systems, particularly those based on nanoparticles, stand out due to their inherent advantages. Collectively, the evidence paints a promising picture: nanoparticles are not merely passive carriers but active participants in the CRISPR/Cas9 delivery landscape. Intestinal transplantation (ITx) is the definitive treatment for intestinal failure but has the highest rejection rate among solid organ transplants, requiring high doses of immunosuppressive medication, which is associated with high rates of infection, graft-versus-host disease, and malignancy. Transplant tolerance would overcome the need for long-term immunosuppression (ISP). Using nonmyeloablative conditioning, our laboratory has developed a novel swine model of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) that produces durable mixed chimerism (MC) and immune tolerance without toxicity. We investigated whether durable MC would promote tolerance of subsequently transplanted donor-matched intestinal allografts without ISP. Using miniature swine with a defined major histocompatibility complex (MHC), we performed HSCT across an MHC-class-I haplotype mismatch. Immunosuppressive therapy was stopped by day 45. MC was evaluated using flow cytometry, and mixed lymphocyte reaction assays were used to evaluate cellular responses. Subsequently, orthotopic ITx was performed without ISP using a donor that was MHC-matched to the HSCT donor. The recipients were observed for 4 weeks and euthanized for tissue collection and mechanistic assays. After HSCT, the recipients developed durable multilineage MC and apparent deletional tolerance. After ITx, recipients showed no clinical or histologic signs of rejection, and chimerism was unchanged. Conventional petroleum-derived polymers are valued for their versatility and are widely used, owing to their characteristics such as cost-effectiveness, diverse physical and chemical qualities, lower molecular weight, and easy processability for large-scale production. However, the extensive accumulation of such plastics leads to serious environmental issues. To combat this existing situation, an alternative lies in the production of bioplastics from natural and renewable sources such as plants, animals, microbes, etc. Bioplastics obtained from renewable sources are compostable and susceptible to degradation caused by microbes hydrolyzing to CO 2 , CH 4, and biomass. Also, certain additives are reinforced into the bioplastic films to improve their physicochemical properties and degradation rate. However, on degradation, the bio-microplastic (BM) produced could have positive as well as negative impact on the soil health. This article thus focuses on the degradation of various fossil based as well as bio based biodegradable plastics such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polyhydroxy butyrate (PHB), polylactic acid (PLA), polybutylene succinate (PBS), polycaprolactone (PCL), and polysaccharide derived bioplastics by mechanical, thermal, photodegradation and microbial approaches. The degradation mechanism of each approach has been discussed in detailed for different bioplastics. How the incorporation or reinforcement of various additives in the biodegradable plastics effects their degradation rates has also been discussed. Background: Pure tone audiometry (PTA) is considered the standard method of hearing assessment. However, technical and logistical challenges preclude its usage for hearing screening at primary healthcare facilities. Free field hearing (FFH) tests such as conversation voice (CV) and whispered voice (WV) tests have been used for hearing assessment. However, their correlation to PTA and accuracy in detection of hearing loss are doubtful. This study aims to determine if FFH tests can be used for estimation of hearing thresholds., Methods: A retrospective analytical study was conducted at the otorhinolaryngology department. Spearman's correlation coefficient ( ρ ) was determined between FFH recognition distance and average air conduction PTA thresholds. A statistical regression model was developed to estimate hearing thresholds from the FFH recognition distance. The FFH tests were studied for their accuracy in detection of hearing loss., Results: The audiometric records of 437 persons (874 ears) were analysed. The CV and WV tests were found to have a high correlation ( ρ  = -0.757 and -0.758, respectively) with average PTA thresholds in persons with hearing loss. The WV test was found to have a 94.7% sensitivity, 90.8% specificity, 97.6% positive predictive value, 80.9% negative predictive value, and 93.9% accuracy in detection of hearing loss., Conclusion: FFH tests such as WV test can be used to estimate the hearing thresholds and screen for hearing loss when audiometric tests are not logistically feasible, such as at primary-level healthcare facilities, remote locations, and in schools. In the landscape of green hydrogen production, alkaline water electrolysis is a well-established, yet not-so-cost-effective, technique due to the high overpotential requirement for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A low-voltage approach is proposed to overcome not only the OER challenge by favorably oxidizing abundant feedstock molecules with an earth-abundant catalyst but also to reduce the energy input required for hydrogen production. This alternative process not only generates carbon-negative green H 2 but also yields concurrent value-added products (VAPs), thereby maximizing economic advantages and transforming waste into valuable resources. The essence of this study lies in a novel electrocatalyst material. In the present study, unique and two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin nanosheet phosphates featuring first-row transition metals are synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method, and evaluated for the electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation reaction (GLYOR) in an alkaline medium and simultaneous H 2 production. Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (CoP), Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (CuP), and Ni 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (NiP) exhibit 2D sheet morphologies, while FePO 4 (FeP) displays an entirely different snowflake-like morphology. The 2D nanosheet morphology provides a large surface area and a high density of active sites. As a GLYOR catalyst, CoP ultrathin (∼5 nm) nanosheets exhibit remarkably low onset potential at 1.12 V (vs RHE), outperforming that of NiP, FeP, and CuP around 1.25 V (vs RHE). CoP displays 82% selective formate production, indicating a superior capacity for C-C cleavage and concurrent oxidation; this property could be utilized to valorize larger molecules. CoP also exhibits highly sustainable electrochemical stability for a continuous 200 h GLYOR operation, yielding 6.5 L of H 2 production with a 4 cm 2 electrode and 98 ± 0.5% Faradaic efficiency. Electrochemical glycerol oxidation reaction (GLYOR) could be a promising way to use the abundantly available glycerol for production of value-added chemicals and fuels. Completely avoiding the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with GLYOR is an evolving strategy to reduce the overall cell potential and generate value-added chemicals and fuels on both the anode and cathode. We demonstrate the morphology-controlled palladium nanocrystals, afforded by colloidal chemistry, and their established morphology-dependent GLYOR performance. Although it is known that controlling the morphology of an electrocatalyst can modulate the activity and selectivity of the products, still it is a relatively underexplored area for many reactions, including GLYOR. Among nanocube (Pd-NC), truncated octahedron (Pd-TO), spherical and polycrystalline (Pd-PC) morphologies, the Pd-NC electrocatalyst deposited on a Ni foam exhibits the highest glycerol conversion (85%) along with 42% glyceric acid selectivity at a low applied potential of 0.6 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) in 0.1 M glycerol and 1 M KOH at ambient temperature. Owing to the much favorable thermodynamics of GLYOR on the Pd-NC surface, the assembled electrolyzer requires an electricity input of only ∼3.7 kWh/m 3 of H 2 at a current density of 100 mA/cm 2 , in contrast to the requirement of ≥5 kWh/m 3 of H 2 with an alkaline/PEM electrolyzer. Sustainability has been successfully demonstrated at 10 and 50 mA/cm 2 and up to 120 h with GLYOR in water and simulated seawater.

Background: Linezolid (LNZ) is a synthetic oxazolidinone antibiotic approved for the treatment of uncomplicated and complicated skin and soft tissue infections caused by gram-positive bacteria. Typically, LNZ is administered orally or intravenously in most cases. However, prolonged therapy is associated with various side effects and lifethreatening complications. Cutaneous application of LNZ will assist in reducing the dose, hence minimizing the unwanted side/adverse effects associated with oral administration. Dermal delivery provides an alternative route of administration, facilitating a local and sustained concentration of the antimicrobial at the site of infection., Objective: The current research work aimed to formulate solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) based gel for dermal delivery of LNZ in the management of uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections to maximise its benefits and minimise the side effects., Methods: SLNs were prepared by high-shear homogenisation and ultrasound method using Dynasan 114 as solid lipid and Pluronic F-68 as surfactant. The effect of surfactant concentration, drug-to-lipid ratio, and sonication time was investigated on particle size, zeta potential, and entrapment efficiency using the Taguchi design. The main effect plot of means and signal-to-noise ratio were generated to determine the optimized formulation. The optimized batch was formulated into a gel, and ex vivo permeation study, in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activity were conducted., Results: The optimised process parameters to achieve results were 2% surfactant concentration, a drug-to-lipid ratio of 1:2, and 360 s of sonication time. The optimized batch was 206.3± 0.17nm in size with a surface charge of -24.4± 4.67mV and entrapment efficiency of 80.90 ± 0.45%. SLN-based gel demonstrated anomalous transport with an 85.43% in vitro drug release. The gel showed a 5.03 ± 0.15 cm zone of inhibition while evaluated for in vitro antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Ex vivo skin permeation studies demonstrated 20.308% drug permeation and 54.96% cutaneous deposition. In-vivo results showed a significant reduction in colony-forming units in the group treated with LNZ SLN-based gel., Conclusion: Ex vivo studies ascertain the presence of the drug at the desired site and improve therapy. In vivo results demonstrated the ability of SLN-based gel to significantly reduce the number of bacteria in the stripped infection model. The protein delivery system is one of the innovative or novel drug delivery systems in the present era. Proteins play an indispensable role in our body and are mainly found in every part, like tissue and cells of our body. It also controls various functions, such as maintaining our tissue, transportation, muscle recovery, enzyme production and acting as an energy source for our body. Protein therapeutics have big future perspectives, and their use in the treatment of a wide range of serious diseases has transformed the delivery system in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. The chief advantage of protein delivery is that it can be delivered directly to the systemic circulation. So far, parenteral routes, such as intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous, are the most often used method of administering protein drugs. Alternative routes like buccal, oral, pulmonary, transdermal, nasal, and ocular routes have also shown a remarkable success rate. However, as with all other types of delivery, here, several challenges are posed due to the presence of various barriers, such as the enzymatic barrier, intestinal epithelial barrier, capillary endothelial barrier, and blood-brain barrier. There are several approaches that have been explored to overcome these barriers, such as chemical modification, enzymatic inhibitors, penetration enhancers, and mucoadhesive polymers. Ovarian cancer (OC) is the second most common gynaecological malignancy. It typically affects females over the age of 50, and since 75% of cases are only discovered at stage III or IV, this is a sign of a poor diagnosis. Despite intraperitoneal chemotherapy's chemosensitivity, most patients relapse and face death. Early detection is difficult, but treatment is also difficult due to the route of administration, resistance to therapy with recurrence, and the need for precise cancer targeting to minimize cytotoxicity and adverse effects. On the other hand, undergoing debulking surgery becomes challenging, and therapy with many chemotherapeutic medications has manifested resistance, a condition known as multidrug resistance (MDR). Although there are other therapeutic options for ovarian cancer, this article solely focuses on co-delivery techniques, which work via diverse pathways to overcome cancer cell resistance. Different pathways contribute to MDR development in ovarian cancer; however, usually, pump and non-pump mechanisms are involved. Striking cancerous cells from several angles is important to defeat MDR. Nanocarriers are known to bypass the drug efflux pump found on cellular membranes to hit the pump mechanism. Nanocarriers aid in the treatment of ovarian cancer by enhancing the delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs to the tumour sites through passive or active targeting, thereby reducing unfavorable side effects on the healthy tissues. Additionally, the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) mechanism boosts the bioavailability of the tumour site. To address the shortcomings of conventional delivery, the current review attempts to explain the current conventional treatment with special reference to passively and actively targeted drug delivery systems (DDSs) towards specific receptors developed to treat ovarian cancer. In conclusion, tailored nanocarriers would optimize medication delivery into the intracellular compartment before optimizing intra-tumour distribution. Other novel treatment possibilities for ovarian cancer include tumour vaccines, gene therapy, targeting epigenetic alteration, and biologically targeted compounds. Health related quality of life (HRQOL) is a multidimensional concept that encompasses the patient's perceptions of his or her physical, emotional, social, and cognitive functions. Despite DTC patients' long survival, HRQOL has been shown to be lower than in the general population. There is a scarcity of data on HRQOL in thyroid cancer in the Indian population and especially goiter endemic area. As a result, the authors conducted a health-related quality of life survey in patients managed at their center in Northern India's Sub-Himalayan region using two widely accepted questionnaires. Adults with differentiated thyroid cancer who had surgery with or without radio-iodine ablation and had recovered for at least 6 months were assessed using health quality of life surveys, the QLQ-C30 and QLQ-THY34 of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Group. The survey was completed by 57 adults with a mean age of 45.64 ± 15.64 years. The average time between the survey and treatment was 13.3 ± 10.8 months. After surgery, the QLQ-C30 found a significant reduction in insomnia, appetite loss, constipation, diarrhea, and financial difficulties, whereas radio-iodine ablation significantly improved global health status. The QLQ-THY34 found a significant increase in symptoms such as voice concerns, hair problems, dry mouth, shoulder functioning, tingling, and worrying after surgery, with a significant improvement in swallowing and job impact symptoms. The surgical extent had no impact. The quality of life for people with differentiated thyroid cancer in goiter-endemic areas is similar to that of other areas. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is a peripheral labyrinthine disease and is one of the most common causes of dizziness in the general population. The proposed study was conducted in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh for a period of one year. About 44 patients aged between 14 and 60 years who came out positive on Dix Hallpike test and were willing for study were included in case group, whereas 44 patients aged 14-60 years who came out negative on Dix Hallpike test and with no complaint of vertiginous feeling were included in control group. Cases and controls were subjected to blood investigations like complete hemogram, calcium, vitamin D and uric acid. The mean Vitamin D was found to be significantly less in Case group (27.90 ± 15.89) compared to the Control group (39.05 ± 21.15) while no significant difference in mean Serum Calcium was observed between the Case group (8.48 ± 1.28) and Control group (8.88 ± 1.25). Serum uric acid levels were also compared and no significant difference was found between Case group (4.12 ± 1.15) and the Control group (4.06 ± 0.95). Our study found that there is relation between low vitamin D levels and occurrence of BPPV. Which supports the hypothesis that supplementation of Vitamin D might be helpful in preventing the occurrence and more frequent recurrence of BPPV. Background: In post thyroidectomy patients hypocalcemia is one of the known complication many factors play important role in calcium hemostasis and magnesium is one among them. So this study was conducted to assess the prevalence of hypomagnesemia in post thyroidectomy patients and its relationship with calcium homeostasis., Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted among 31 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy or completion thyroidectomy over a period of 1 year. Patient's pre-operative and post-operative day 1 and day 2 serum calcium, magnesium and iPTH was recorded and their correlation was analyzed using SPSS 21.0. and p value of < 0.05 was taken as statistically significant. Calcium supplementation was only given to patients who developed symptomatic hypocalcemia in postoperative period., Results: In our study hypomagnesemia in post thyroidectomy patients on post -operative day 1 and day 2 was 71% and 74.2% respectively. Hypocalcemia was seen in 64.5% of patients on post-operative day 1 and 96.8% on post-operative day 2. Symptomatic hypocalcemia was seen in 22.6% of study population on post-operative day 1 and 22.6% of patients on post-operative day 2 while 25.8% patients newly developed symptoms of hypocalcemia. Statistically significant correlation was found between calcium and magnesium levels in post op day 1(< 0.001) and post op day 2(< 0.004) and also statistically significant correlation was found between post-operative day 1 magnesium levels and post-operative day 2 calcium levels (0.001). Symptomatic hypocalcemia was more commonly seen among patients who had hypomagnesemia along with hypocalcemia though it failed to show any statistical significance., Conclusion: Post thyroidectomy hypomagnesemia is frequent event and magnesium acts as an independent risk factor in development of post thyroidectomy hypocalcemia. Hypomagnesemia tends to alleviate symptomatic hypocalcemia in post thyroidectomy patients. Second branchial anomalies like branchial cyst, sinus or fistula are common lateral neck masses in pediatric age group but it is rare to encounter complete branchial fistula with external as well as internal openings. We present a case of 16 yrs old female patient with complete Branchial fistula which was diagnosed with the help of CT fistulogram and thereafter taken up for surgical excision of fistula under general anaesthesia. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of branchial fistula. Background: HNSCC (head and neck squamous cell carcinoma) is a serious global health problem, with estimated more than 550,000 new cases and 300,000 deaths annually. More than 90% of these malignancies are oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)., Materials and Methods: Patients selected were asked to fill the detailed structured case history proforma and thorough clinical examination, structured, pre-designed, pre-evaluated (UW-QOL) UW Questionnaire version 4 on quality of life (QOL) of oral squamous cell carcinoma patients containing thirteen subjective questionnaires and three global questionnaires. All the patients of OSCC after one month (1 month) of radiation and chemotherapy were assessed for quality of life by questionnaire., Result: Post-treatment QOL assessment of OSCC patients reveals a number of problems such as chewing, swallowing, saliva, lack of activity, and mood disturbances.
