Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements of powder D$_3(^{7}$Li)($^{193}$Ir)$_2$O$_6$ reveal low energy magnetic excitations with a scattering cross section that is broad in $|Q|$ and consistent with a Kitaev spin-liquid (KSL) state. The magnetic nature of the excitation spectrum is demonstrated by longitudinally polarized neutron studies. The total magnetic moment of 1.7(2)$\mu_B$/Ir inferred from the total magnetic scattering cross section is consistent with the effective moment inferred from magnetic susceptibility data and expectations for the $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$ single ion state. The rise in the dynamic correlation function ${\cal S}(Q,\omega)$ for $\hbar\omega<5~$meV can be described by a nearest-neighbor Kitaev model with interaction strength $K\approx-13(5)$~meV. Exchange disorder associated with the mixed D-Li site could play an important role in stabilizing the low $T$ quantum fluctuating state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The recent observation of cyclotron resonance in optimally-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ using time-domain THz spectroscopy in high magnetic field has given new possibilities for the study of cuprate superconductors. One can measure the cyclotron mass in more disordered cuprates possesing short scattering times therefore expanding the study to materials and dopings in which quantum oscillations have not been observed. Here we present the measurement of the carrier mass of the hole doped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ across a a range of dopings spanning the slightly underdoped ($x=0.13$) to highly overdoped ($x=0.26$), near to the termination of the superconducting dome. These results reveal a systematic increase of $m_c$ with doping, up to values greater than thirteen times the bare electron mass. This is in contrast with those masses extracted from the heat capacity, which show a peak near the pseudogap critical point $p^*$ and/or Lifshitz transition. The cyclotron frequency is linear in field up to 31 T for all dopings giving no evidence for field induced Fermi surface reconstructions. The cyclotron mass is found to be positive for all dopings, but with a magnitude systematically below the heat capacity mass for under and optimally doped samples, while exceeding it for overdoped samples. Among other aspects, these results are surprising as photoemission reveals a Lifshitz transition in the middle of our doping range and the sign of the cyclotron mass determined from a finite frequency resonance is -- in conventional theories -- a {\it topological quantity} only sensitive to whether or not the Fermi surface is closed around holes or electrons. We see no sign of a divergence of the mass near $p^*$ nor near the Lifshitz transition, showing that any singularity -- if it exists -- is not strong enough to affect the cyclotron mass., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We present a thorough experimental study of the three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS), time-domain THz spectroscopy, and heat capacity measurements. The main results include a massive low-temperature reorganization of the INS spectral weight that evolves into a broad peak centered around 12 meV, and a distinctive peak in the THz data at 2.8(1) meV. A detailed comparison to powder-averaged spin-wave theory calculations reveals that the positions of these two features are controlled by the anisotropic $\Gamma$ coupling and the Heisenberg exchange $J$, respectively. The refined microscopic spin model places $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ in close proximity to the Kitaev spin liquid phase.

Two-dimensional electron gasses (2DEG) in InAs quantum wells proximitized by aluminum are promising platforms for topological qubits based on Majorana zero modes. However, there are still substantial uncertainties associated with the nature of the electronic states at the interfaces of these systems. It is challenging to probe the properties of these hybridized states as they are buried under a relatively thick aluminum layer. In this work, we have investigated a range of InAs/In$ _{1-\text{x}} $Ga$ _\text{x} $As heterostructures with Al overlayers using high precision time-domain THz spectroscopy. Despite the thick metallic overlayer, we observe a prominent cyclotron resonance in the magnetic field that can be associated with the response of the interfacial states. Measurements of the THz range complex Faraday rotation allow the extraction of the sign and magnitude of the effective mass, the density of charge carriers, and scattering times of the 2DEG despite the close proximity of the aluminum layer. Thin films of $ \beta- $tungsten host superconductivity in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. This non-equilibrium crystalline phase of tungsten has attracted considerable attention in recent years due to its giant spin Hall effect and the potential promise of exotic superconductivity. However, more than 60 years after its discovery, superconductivity in this material is still not well understood. Using time-domain THz spectroscopy, we measure the frequency response of the complex optical conductivity of $ \beta- $tungsten thin film with a T$_c$ of 3.7 K in its superconducting state. At temperatures down to 1.6 K, we find that both the superconducting gap and the superfluid spectral weight are much smaller than that expected for a weakly coupled superconductor given the T$_c$. The conclusion of a small gap holds up even when accounting for possible inhomogeneities in the system, which could come from other crystalline forms of tungsten (that are not superconducting at these temperatures) or surface states on $ \beta- $tungsten grains. Using detailed X-ray diffraction measurements, we preclude the possibility of significant amount of other tungsten allotropes, strongly suggesting the topological surface states of $ \beta- $tungsten play the role of inhomogeneity in these films. NiNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is an almost ideal realization of a 1D spin-1 ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain compound with weak unidirectional anisotropy. Using time-domain THz spectroscopy, we measure the low-energy electrodynamic response of NiNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ as a function of temperature and external magnetic field. At low temperatures, we find a magnon-like spin-excitation, which corresponds to the lowest energy excitation at $q\sim0$. At higher temperatures, we unexpectedly observe a temperature-dependent renormalization of the spin-excitation energy, which has a strong dependence on field direction. Using theoretical arguments, exact diagonalizations and finite temperature dynamical Lanczos calculations, we construct a picture of magnon-magnon interactions that naturally explains the observed renormalization. This unique scenario is a consequence of the spin-1 nature and has no analog in the more widely studied spin-1/2 systems., Comment: Includes both main text and supplementary

Epitaxial bilayer films of Bi(110) and Ni host a time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking superconducting order with an unexpectedly high transition temperature $T_c = 4.1$ K. Using time-domain THz spectroscopy, we measure the low energy electrodynamic response of a Bi/Ni bilayer thin film from $0.2$ THz to $2$ THz as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We analyze the data in the context of a BCS-like superconductor with a finite normal-state scattering rate. In zero magnetic field, all states in the film become fully gapped, providing important constraints into possible pairing symmetries. Our data appears to rule out the odd-frequency pairing that is natural for many ferromagnetic-superconductor interfaces. By analyzing the magnetic field-dependent response in terms of a pair-breaking parameter, we determine that superconductivity develops over the entire bilayer sample which may point to the $p$-wave like nature of unconventional superconductivity.

We show that under an a.c. magnetic field excitation the vortex lattice in a superconductor with periodic array of holes can undergo a transition from a Mott-like state where each vortex is localized in a hole, to a metal-like state where the vortices get delocalized. The vortex dynamics is studied through the magnetic shielding response which is measured using a low frequency two-coil mutual inductance technique on a disordered superconducting NbN film having periodic array of holes. We observe that the shielding response of the vortex state is strongly dependent on the amplitude of the a.c. magnetic excitation. At low amplitude the shielding response varies smoothly with excitation amplitude, corresponding to elastic deformation of the vortex lattice. However, above a threshold value of excitation the response shows a series of sharp jumps, signaling the onset of the Mott to metal transition.
