Abstract

Humanity's progress in combating hunger, poverty, and child mortality is marred by escalating environmental degradation due to rising greenhouse gas emissions and climate change impacts. Despite positive developments, ecosystems are suffering globally. Regional strategies for mitigating and adapting to climate change must be viewed from a global perspective. The 2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals reflect the challenge of balancing social and environmental aspects for sustainable development. Agriculture, vital for food production, also threatens Earth systems. A study examines the interplay of land-use impacts, modeling crop and livestock trade, and their effects on climate, biodiversity, water, and land using a Partial-Equilibrium Agricultural Sector Model. Different scenarios involving taxing externalities related to Earth processes were tested. Results show synergies in reducing emissions, biodiversity loss, water use, and phosphorus pollution, driven by shifts in crop management. Nitrogen application and deforestation scenarios exhibit weaker synergies and more conflicts. The study offers insights into SDG interactions and the potential for sustainable farming.

Abstract

Fink is a broker designed to enable science with large time-domain alert streams such as the one from the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). It exhibits traditional astronomy broker features such as automatised ingestion, annotation, selection and redistribution of promising alerts for transient science. It is also designed to go beyond traditional broker features by providing real-time transient classification which is continuously improved by using state-of-the-art Deep Learning and Adaptive Learning techniques. These evolving added values will enable more accurate scientific output from LSST photometric data for diverse science cases while also leading to a higher incidence of new discoveries which shall accompany the evolution of the survey. Abstract

To be successful in any field, one needs to have good decision making, effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The skills an individual possess not only helps him/her to earn his/her livelihood but also aids in the development and progress of the whole nation. So, there is an urgent need of integrating our traditional courses with skill development modules to enhance the efficiency of the young population and help them to be successful in their careers in future. Some basic skills like communication, creative thinking, self directed learning and problem solving are not only needed by an individual during course of his study or a job but also needed in day to day life to cope up with real life problems. One such method which can help in enhancing the skills and knowledge during school, college as well as at workplace is problem based learning; and if students are imparted education and trained for various skills right from the school through problem based learning, the concept and understanding pertaining to school curriculum and real life situations will be long lasting and concrete. The present paper critically reviews the studies related to development of skills through Problem Based Learning.

38. Learning Biology through Problem Based Learning -- Perception of Students

Abstract

The study was undertaken to assess the student's perception while learning class 9 biology through Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method. Two hundred students of Government School of Chandigarh affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, India, constituted the sample for the study. Hundred students were randomly assigned to the experimental group while hundred students were randomly assigned to the control group. Both the groups consisted of the students which had average, below average, and high academic achievement. Experimenter did not disturb the normal set up of the classroom in the school while undertaking the study. Both the groups were taught the topics of biology of class 9th Science as per science text book issued by NCERT (National Council for Education, Research, and Training). On completion of the selected topics of biology, students of experimental group were asked to fill the opinnionaire which consisted of 25 items to analyze their perception towards PBL. Percentage technique was employed for analyzing the results. The study revealed that PBL makes learning an enjoyable experience by exploring new knowledge, increasing curiosity amongst the learners, linking previous knowledge, and creating interest.

Abstract

Background/Aim: The most common bacterial diseases in women around the world are urinary tract infections. Aim of this study, was to evaluate the prevalence and current antibiotic resistance rate of uropathogens isolated from the female patients of a tertiary care hospital in Amritsar, Punjab, India. Methods: Samples were collected from patients showing urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms and analysed using microscopy, dipstick test and urine culturing followed by identification and characterisation of to identify the uropathogens. Antibiotic susceptibility test and MIC were performed. Results: The results revealed that E coli (35.5 %) was the most prominent uropathogen followed by Klebsiella spp (21 %), Enterobacter spp (17 %), Acinetobacter (11 %), Enterococcus spp (6 %), Pseudomonas spp (4.5 %), coagulase negative Staphylococci (4 %), coagulase-positive Staphylococci (0.5 %) and Corynebacterium aurimucosum (0.5 %). The antibiotic susceptibility profile study reported eight isolates with multi-drug resistance properties. However, gentamicin, imipenem and meropenem were found to be the most effective antibiotics against the isolated uropathogens. All the extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-positive isolates possess the quinolone-resistant gene qnrB, while qnrA was absent. Conclusion: The current study revealed that for appropriate treatment, it is crucial to be aware of the epidemiological data regarding the disease and to begin any empirical antibiotic treatment.
