Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) is a re-emerging teaching and learning pedagogy approach that has gained a lot of momentum since 2016. Prior publications concentrated mostly on curriculum design and student achievement, while little attention was devoted to understanding teachers' perceptions toward RME. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of factors that influence teachers' perceptions to adopt RME in the long term. Ten hypotheses were proposed and tested employing the Generalized Structured Component Analysis (GSCA) technique. 226 primary school teachers from various regions were recruited to answer the questionnaires via Google Form. The experimental results validated six out of ten expected relationships between the factors in the extended self-determination theory model. That is, perceived competence affected confirmation, confirmation influenced both intrinsic motivation and satisfaction, intrinsic motivation influenced satisfaction, and satisfaction and parental involvement both were considered reliable predictors of realistic math education continuance intention. The remaining hypotheses were not validated, that is, autonomy, relatedness and competence were not found significant on intrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation did not influence RME continuance intention. Overall, the model explains 57.9% the amount of variance in the data. Administrators and policymakers are recommended to intervene on validated relationships to increase teachers' retention and long-term commitment to RME, whereas unsupported assumptions must be reexamined in the future.

Abstract Background Breast cancer is a major health concern worldwide, especially in Vietnam. This study aimed to explore women’s motivation for and factors related to breast cancer screening. Methods A mixed-methods study was conducted in Danang, Vietnam, using a convergent parallel approach. This study utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods to gather the data. The quantitative approach involved surveys to assess motivation levels and related factors, including demographic information and experience with breast cancer screening. In-depth qualitative interviews were used to gain deeper insights into participants' perspectives and experiences related to breast cancer screening. Results The average motivation score for breast cancer screening was moderate (3.55 ± 0.55). Ethnicity, regular health check-ups, family history of breast cancer, receiving information about breast cancer, and women’s health issues have direct relationships with breast cancer screening motivation. According to the qualitative data, three categories emerged: intrinsic motivation, external motivation/internalization, and amotivation. The individual, and sociocultural environmental factors impacted screening motivation. Conclusions This study highlights the motivations behind breast cancer screening among women. Healthcare providers could use these findings to improve screening policies and guidelines and encourage more women to undergo regular screening, ultimately reducing the incidence of breast cancer in the community.

Canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD) viruses, particularly canine distemper virus (CDV), canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2), and canine parainfluenza virus (CPIV), are the primary agents responsible for respiratory diseases in dogs. A dog can be infected with a single or multiple viruses with similar clinical signs. Although CIRD is globally prevalent in dogs, investigation into the causative viruses in Vietnam remains limited. This study aims to identify the presence of CIRD virus(es) in dogs via molecular detection. Three primer sets were newly designed and applied into (RT)-PCR reaction to detect viral genes of CDV, CAV-2, and CPIV in a commercial vaccine (Vanguard® Plus 5/L, Zoetis, USA). Both simplex and multiplex (RT)-PCR reactions using the three primer sets could detect the presence of CAV-2, CDV, and CPIV in the vaccine sample. Subsequently, the applicability of the one-step multiplex (RT)-PCR was demonstrated to test for 27 clinical nasal swab samples collected from dogs suspected of having CIRD. The results showed that our (RT)-PCR could detect CIRD virus(es) in all tested clinical samples. PCR amplicons for each representative CAV-2, CDV, and CPIV were selected for sequencing and showed high genetic similarity to respective field viruses. In conclusion, this study successfully developed a one-step multiplex (RT)-PCR reaction to detect and differentiate causative viruses of CIRD in dogs.

This study compares the food-production efficiencies of integrated rice-fish farming and rice monoculture and evaluates how these farming systems contribute to sustainable food production in the Mekong Delta. The study explores how food-production efficiencies are influenced by the systems’ ecological connectivity by comparing more integrated systems that apply integrated rice-fish farming and integrated pest management (IPM) with less integrated systems farming only rice. Rice-fish farmers with plenty of fish had significantly higher rice yields than farmers with less or no fish, especially during the second crop when the rice was grown together with the fish. A positive correlation between the fish and rice yields, indicated synergistic effects between the fish and rice, due to strengthened ecological connectivity and trophic interactions within the rice-field ecosystem. Overall, rice-fish farmers had higher rice yields than rice farmers, despite using lower amounts of fertilizers and pesticides. They also had lower rice production costs compared to rice farmers, partly because the fish helped fertilize the rice and control rice pests. They had a significantly higher profit and benefit cost ratio than rice farmers because of lower production costs, and high rice and fish yields. The results indicate that food-production efficiencies in the Mekong Delta can be enhanced through diversification and increased ecological connectivity, leading to a more efficient use of rice field ecosystem services that support a long-term and healthy production of food.

This study evaluates the effect of different diets supplemented with vitamin solutions on Pangasius catfish broodstock reproduction, growth performances, and the survival rates of fish larvae and fingerling. The growth and reproductive performances of breeders fed with different test diets showed significant differences among the six tested diets (p < 0.05). The highest final body weight (FBW), weight gain (WG), daily weight gain (DWG), specific growth rate (SGR) of broodstock, and survival rate of Pangasius fingerlings were found in Treatment 5, which contained 0.6% H-OVN mixed with 12.6% algal oil, and Treatment 3, which contained 0.6% vitamin premix H-OVN. The average gonadosomatic index (GSI), relative fecundity index (RFI), fertilized eggs, hatching rates of eggs, and survival rate of fingerlings was 9.1 ± 2.8 (6.7–12.8%), 133,224 ± 39,090 (104,267–199,512 eggs/kg), 77.9 ± 22.2 (62.2–93.6%), and 45.3 ± 17.4 (22.0–66.3%), respectively. The findings of this study showed that the diet containing 35% CP contents supplemented with 0.6% vitamin premix H-OVN mixed with algal oils showed the highest results in terms of growth, reproductive performance indices, and survival rates of Pangasius catfish fingerlings.

To enable the Vietnamese youth to join the international workforce during ASEAN integration, teaching English in general education has undertaken a reform to aim for intercultural communicative competence instead of communicative competence. Since building learners' intercultural communicative competence requires their personal engagement in social interaction, teachers should follow a proper approach to activate students' participation in intercultural communication. This research studied to what extent upper secondary school teachers perceived and practiced intercultural integration prior the educational reform. Data collected from 101 participating teachers through questionnaires and open-ended questions proved that (1) teachers had good understanding of intercultural integration, but (2) they rarely conducted intercultural activities in practices, and (3) teachers' graduate education, not international experience or coursebook teaching, had a positive impact on their intercultural teaching practices. The findings suggested that educational management should be consistent with the progressive reform through the synchronization of all curricular factors towards intercultural education, and teachers should be oriented with intercultural teaching pedagogy to conduct suitable activities to develop students' intercultural communicative competence.

Abstract This study applied a stochastic frontier production model to analyze the technical (TE), allocative (AE), and economic (EE) efficiencies of intensive shrimp farming households, and to identify socioeconomic and shrimp farm‐specific factors (farm size, labor, feed, seed, chemicals/medicine) that influence the TE, AE, and EE of shrimp production in the Ca Mau, Ben Tre, Bac Lieu, and Tra Vinh provinces of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The AE was calculated based on TE and EE. The stochastic frontier production and cost function model were used to evaluate the EE and TE at the shrimp farming household level. The results showed that the mean TE, AE, and EE of shrimp farming systems were 75%, 68.5%, and 61.4%, respectively. Age, gender, education, experience, cooperatives, and technical training significantly impacted the efficiency of shrimp production. The results suggest that shrimp farmers can improve shrimp productivity and EE by decreasing feed cost (FEE) and medicine/chemical cost (MED) of farm inputs. The study showed that shrimp farmers who participated in training activities, cooperatives, or management boards of aquaculture associations were more technically efficient than other farmers. The findings of this study provide essential information about the TE, AE, and EE of shrimp production, which can help local policy makers and shrimp farmers in the region to make better decisions on how to improve the EE and sustainability of shrimp production in the future. There is a need for recommendations on how to improve policies, technical guidance, and training courses on feed management and feeding practices, water quality, and disease management, to help shrimp farmers in the coastal provinces of the Mekong Delta to improve their shrimp production efficiencies in the future.

Kết quả thử nghiệm hoạt tính gây độc của các hợp chất phân lập với bốn dòng tế bào ung thư thử nghiệm (MCF-7, Hep-G2, SK-LU-1 và KB) cho thấy hợp chất β-amyrin có hoạt tính gây độc yếu trên ba dòng tế bào MCF-7, Hep-G2 và SK-LU-1 với giá trị IC50 từ 72,3 đến 96,15 µg·mL–1. Đây là lần đầu tiên các hợp chất này được phân lập từ cây Bù lốt và thử hoạt tính gây độc tế bào ung thư.

AbstractGreen synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has attracted substantial interest and achievement due to their environmental friendliness, ease of manipulation, and potential for large-scale production. By using aqueous Camellia sinensis leaf extract, suspensions of AgNPs, which possess photocatalytic and biological activity, were successfully synthesized in this study. The reduction of silver ions to AgNPs was visually inspected via the colour of the reaction mixture, which was altered from pale yellow to reddish brown. The methods of characterization of the as-synthesized AgNPs were performed using Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), dynamic light scattering technique (DLS), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The surface plasmon resonance bands of AgNPs at 420-430 nm in UV-Vis spectra indicated the presence of silver particles at the nanoscale. The size of AgNPs was determined by DLS, ranging from 25 nm to 40 nm. XRD analysis showed that AgNPs were highly pure and crystalline. The antibacterial activity of AgNPs against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively, was demonstrated by the disc diffusion method. The examination of the photocatalytic activity of AgNPs was conducted through methylene blue (MB) degrading experiments, and the MB degrading performance was approximately 95% within 72 h under sunlight.

Bathymetry data is indispensable for a variety of aquatic field studies and benthic resource inventories. Determining water depth can be accomplished through an echo sounding system or remote estimation utilizing space-borne and air-borne data across diverse environments, such as lakes, rivers, seas, or lagoons. Despite being a common option for bathymetry mapping, the use of satellite imagery faces challenges due to the complex inherent optical properties of water bodies (e.g., turbid water), satellite spatial resolution limitations, and constraints in the performance of retrieval models. This study focuses on advancing the remote sensing based method by harnessing the non-linear learning capabilities of the machine learning (ML) model, employing advanced feature selection through a meta-heuristic algorithm, and using image extraction techniques (i.e., band ratio, gray scale morphological operation, and morphological multi-scale decomposition). Herein, we validate the predictive capabilities of six ML models: Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), CatBoost (CB), Extreme Gradient Boost (XGB), Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM), and KTBoost (KTB) models, both with and without the application of meta-heuristic optimization (i.e., Dragon Fly, Particle Swarm Optimization, and Grey Wolf Optimization), to accurately ascertain water depth. This is achieved using a diverse input dataset derived from multi-spectral Landsat 9 imagery captured on a cloud-free day (19 September 2023) in a shallow, turbid lagoon. Our findings indicate the superior performance of LGBM coupled with Particle Swamp Optimization (R2 = 0.908, RMSE = 0.31 m), affirming the consistency and reliability of the feature extraction and selection-based framework, while offering novel insights into the expansion of bathymetric mapping in complex aquatic environments.

In the present study, response surface methodology involving central composite design was applied to optimize reaction parameters of biodiesel production from Tra (Pangasius hypophthalmus) and Basa (Pangasius bocourti) catfish oil during the microwave-assisted single-step transesterification process. Second-order polynomial models of the microwave-assisted method with acetone (MW-A) and isopropanol (MW-I) co-solvent were used to predict the biodiesel yield and the coefficient of determination (R2) was found to be at 0.9926, and 0.9891, respectively. Research results demonstrated that isopropanol had similar effects to acetone on transesterification yields. The optimum biodiesel yield was calculated as 99.05% (MW-A) and 98.96% (MW-I) from the models with the following reaction conditions: methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 5.60 (MW-A) and 5.66 (MW-I), KOH concentration of 1.04 wt% (MW-A) and 1.00 wt% (MW-I), the reaction temperature of 53.20 °C (MW-A) and 53.59 °C (MW-I), the reaction time of 94.43 s (MW-A) and 93.27 s (MW-I), and co-solvent of 24.20 wt% (MW-A) and 22.73 wt% (MW-I). The results of biodiesel yield under optimal conditions have proved that the regression models agreed with the experimental data. Furthermore, the properties of catfish oil biodiesel produced under the optimum conditions were characterized and found to agree with the EN 14214 standard specifications.

In the field of foreign language education, cultural knowledge is as important as language skills. To date, little research explores how Vietnamese EFL (English as a foreign language) teachers perceive cultural teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic. To fill such gaps in the literature, this study was conducted on 64 EFL high school teachers in Tra Vinh Province with a questionnaire and 06 participants with an in-depth interview to explore their perceptions of cultural teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic, especially when there is a reduction in the contents of the new curriculum. This article applied the framework of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) adapted from Byram, Gribkova, and Starkey (2002) and the Cultural Iceberg framework to analyze Vietnamese EFL high school teachers’ strategies in teaching cultural content. The findings revealed that teachers still have a positive view of the role of cultural teaching, and they still teach cultural knowledge despite the reduction of contents in English textbooks. Effective strategies applied when teaching online were also revealed.

Background and Aim: Probiotic species have been proven to be beneficial on broiler performance; however, most studies have focused on industrial chickens with fast growth, whereas little information concerning the use of these species on native chickens is available. This study aimed to investigate the effects of probiotics Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) on the mortality, growth rate, and carcass characteristics in native Noi chickens challenged with Salmonella Typhimurium. Materials and Methods: We divided 420 1-day-old Noi chicks into seven different treatment groups (n = 60): negative control (no S. Typhimurium, no probiotics or antibiotics); positive control (PC, S. Typhimurium infection, no probiotics or antibiotics); and S. Typhimurium infection and supplementation with LP, BS, LP + BS, enrofloxacin, and commercial probiotics, respectively. Treatment was for 96 days, and the chicks were orally challenged with S. Typhimurium at 22 days old. Results: No deaths occurred during the 4 weeks post-infection in the negative control, LP, or LP+BS groups. The PC group had the highest mortality rate (20%). Re-isolation of S. Typhimurium from the liver, spleen, and heart showed reduced bacterial counts at 1 week post-infection in the LP, BS, and LP + BS groups. The lowest body weight gain was observed in the PC group (949 g/bird), and chicks in the LP group gained 1148 g/bird. An improved feed conversion ratio was noted in the groups receiving probiotic supplementation (3.42–3.50 kg feed/kg gain). There was little evidence that probiotics affected carcass percentage and related parameters, such as breast, thigh and drumstick, and wings. Conclusion: Lactobacillus plantarum or BS dietary supplementation to native Noi broilers resulted in a lower mortality rate and improved body weight gain but did not affect carcass characteristics.

Several previous studies in the field of assisted reproduction have focused on the use of blood gel derivatives, such as platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), as a treatment for endometrial rehabilitation. However, the ability to release growth factors and the gel form of this product led to the evolution of platelet lysates. In this study, blood gel derivatives, including PRF lysate, which was in liquid form, and PRF gel, were collected and evaluated for growth factors. It was shown to be effective in endometrial wound healing and regeneration in mouse injured uterine tissue models through structure and function (pinopode expression, embryo implantation) evaluation. The results demonstrated that the concentrations of growth factors, including PDGF-AB and VEGF-A, were higher in the PRF lysate compared to the PRF gel (p < 0.05). PRF lysate could release these growth factors for 8 days. Furthermore, both PRF gel and PRF lysate restored the morphology of injured endometrial tissues in terms of luminal and glandular epithelia, as well as uterine gland secretory activity. However, the presence of pinopodes and embryonic implantation were only observed in the PRF lysate group. It can be concluded that PRF lysate promotes wound healing in mouse injured tissue models in vitro, which can act as healing products in tissue repair.

This study investigated the influence of soil undergoing different crop rotations on the CH4, CO2 emissions, and decomposition of rice straw. The studied soil undergoing crop rotation systems were rice-rice-rice (SR) and baby corn-rice-mungbean (SB). Two main microcosm set-ups: anaerobic (SR-AN, SB-AN) and aerobic (SR-AE, SB-AE) conditions. Litter bags containing rice stems were inserted into the soil and recollected at different time points for chemical analysing and the gas sampling was collected to measure the CO2 and CH4 emissions. The results indicated that the total carbon (TC) decreased around 30%, and the TC removal in anaerobic was significantly higher than in aerobic conditions. The residue cellulose content varied in a range from 68.2% to 78.6%, while the hemicellulose content varied from 57.4% to 69.3% at day 50 after incorporation. There were no significant differences in the total nitrogen removal, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents among the microcosm set-ups. CO2 emission increased in all the microcosm set-ups with the treatments without rice straw (CTSR, CTSB) in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. CH4 release in the SR-AN treatments did not differ significantly compared with the SB-AN treatments. This study confirmed that the decomposition of rice straw residues is faster in the anaerobic paddy soil condition compared to the aerobic crop rotation condition.

The non-treated wastewater from residential areas contains high concentrations of ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N). When discharged into the drainage water system, it deteriorates the water quality in urban rivers. This study used two types of materials to form eco-bags, using activated zeolite bead (AZB) and alkaline pretreated straw (APS), in geotextile bags for easy recovery and reuse. The AZB and APS provided the breeding habitat for the microorganisms that promoted biofilm formation on their surface. The immobilization of engineered denitrification microorganisms facilitated the removal of NH4+-N from the urban river water. The NH4+-N removal in the AZB and APS bags were in the range of 64–73%, and 56–61%, respectively, while the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal in the AZB and APS bags ranged from 33–36%, and 30–31%, respectively. In addition, as evident from DNA and microbial community analysis, the microorganisms demonstrated a greater proclivity to grow and proliferate on the surface of AZB and APS and improved the water quality of urban rivers. HIGHLIGHTS Activated zeolite bead (AZB) and alkaline pretreated straw (APS) were used for the immobilization of microorganism.; Eco-bags prepared using AZB and APS in geotextile bags facilitated easy recovery and reuse.; Engineered denitrification bacteria were used to improve the NH4+-N removal capacity.; Microorganism diversity was investigated to substantiate the water quality improvement ability of AZB and APS.;

The increasing intensification of aquaculture production requires the development of strategies to reduce its environmental impacts such as the pollution caused by the discharge of nutrient-rich sediments into local water bodies. This research was undertaken to investigate and evaluate the effect of using organic fertilizers produced from the pond sludge of freshwater snakehead fish (Channa striata) composted with organic amendments of peanut shells and coir fiber on growth performance indices and yields of Malabar spinach (Basella alba L.) and Amaranthus cruentus (Amaranthus L.) vegetables in the dry and wet seasons. An organic fertilizer quality experiment showed that the richest nutrient contents of the produced organic fertilizer were achieved when using 30% sludge mixed with 70% organic amendments (50% peanut shells + 50% coir fiber). This was selected and used for a vegetable cultivation experiment. For the reference treatment, only chemical fertilizer was applied, while in the other four treatments, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of the chemical fertilizer were substituted with the organic fertilizer. A 25–50% reduction in the chemical fertilizer application resulted in better growth performance indices and final yields than the other treatments, including the reference treatment, for both crops. The highest yields of Malabar spinach and Amaranthus cruentus vegetables were found in Treatment 3 (50% chemical fertilizer combined with 50% organic fertilizer), followed by Treatment 2 (25% organic fertilizer combined with 75% inorganic fertilizer) (P < 0.05). The results show that the reuse of sludge from snakehead fish ponds mixed with agricultural by-products as organic fertilizer for vegetables not only improves vegetable productivity but also reduces the costs of chemical fertilizer and decreases environmental pollution.

Exposing catalytically active metal sites in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) while maintaining porosity is beneficial for increasing electron transport to achieve better electrochemical energy conversion performance. Herein, we propose an in situ method for MOF formation and loading onto TiO2 nanorods (NR) using a simple solution-processable method followed by annealing to obtain TiO2-Co3O4. The as-prepared TiO2-ZIF-67 based photoanodes were annealed at 350, 450, and 550 °C to study the effect of carbonization on photo-electrochemical water oxidation. The successful loading of ZIF-67 on TiO2 and the formation of TiO2-Co3O4 heterojunction were confirmed by XRD, XPS, FE-SEM, and HRTEM analyses. TiO2-Co3O4-450 (the sample annealed at 450 °C) showed an enhanced photocurrent of 2.4 mA/cm2, which was 2.6 times larger than that of pristine TiO2. The improved photocurrent might be ascribed to the prepared p–n heterostructures (Co3O4 and TiO2), which promote electron–hole separation and charge transfer within the system and improve the photoelectrochemical performance. Moreover, the preparation of Co3O4 from the MOF carbonization process improved the electrical conductivity and significantly increased the number of exposed active sites and enhanced the photoresponse performance. The as-prepared ZIF-67 derived TiO2-Co3O4 based photoanodes demonstrate high PEC water oxidation, and the controlled carbonization method paves the way toward the synthesis of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts.

Simple Summary: This study was carried out to examine how different diets with vitamin solutions/vitamin premixes and plant oils (algae and fungi oils) affect the reproduction of Pangasius catfish broodstock, growth performance, and survival rates of fish larvae and fingerling. The experiment was designed as a factorial setup, with Pangasius catfish broodstock fed six different diets in triplicate groups of ten fish (three males and seven females) cultured in separate hapa nets in an the earthen pond for about two months. Results showed significant differences among the six tested diets. Diets containing 35% CP, supplemented with 0.6% vitamin solutions and 1.26% algal oil, produced the best results in terms of the highest growth performance, reproductive indices, and fingerling survival rates. These findings provide valuable information for Pangasius catfish farmers and the fish production industries in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The average gonadosomatic index (GSI), relative fecundity index (RFI), fertilized eggs, hatching rates of eggs, and survival rate of fingerlings was 9.1 ± 2.8 (6.7–12.8%), 133,224 ± 39,090 (104,267–199,512 eggs/kg), 77.9 ± 22.2 (62.2–93.6%), and 45.3 ± 17.4 (22.0–66.3%), respectively. The findings of this study showed that the diet containing 35% CP contents supplemented with 0.6% vitamin premix H-OVN mixed with algal oils showed the highest results in terms of growth, reproductive performance indices, and survival rates of Pangasius catfish fingerlings.
