Abstract

Background: Inheritance of a germline mutation in one of the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, and PMS2 causes a high risk of colorectal and other cancers (Lynch Syndrome). Use of aspirin has been shown to be associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer for the general population as well as for MMR gene mutation carriers. The aim of this study was to determine whether use of aspirin and ibuprofen in a nontrial setting is associated with the risk of colorectal cancer risk for MMR gene mutation carriers. Methods: We included 1858 participants in the Colon Cancer Family Registry who had been found to have a pathogenic germline mutation in a MMR gene (carriers). We used weighted Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). All statistical tests were two-sided. Results: A total of 714 carriers (38%) were diagnosed with colorectal cancer at a mean age of 42.4 (standard deviation 10.6) years. A reduced risk of colorectal cancer was associated with aspirin use (for 1 month to 4.9 years: HR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.27 to 0.90, P = .02; for ≥5 years: HR = 0.25, 95% CI = 0.10 to 0.62, P = .003) and ibuprofen use (for 1 month to 4.9 years: HR = 0.38, 95% CI = 0.18 to 0.79, P = .009; for ≥5 years: HR = 0.26, 95% CI = 0.10 to 0.69, P = .007), compared with less than one month of use. Conclusion: Our results provide additional evidence that, for MMR gene mutation carriers, use of aspirin and ibuprofen might be effective in reducing their high risk of colorectal cancer. 39. A Multi-word Term Extraction System.

Abstract

Traditional statistical approaches for identifying multi-word terms have to handle a large amount of noisy data and are extremely time consuming. This paper introduces a multi-word term extraction system for extracting multi-word terms from a set of documents based on the co-related text-segments existing in these documents. The system uses a short predefined stoplist as an initial input to segment a set of documents into text-segments, calculates the segment-weights of all text-segments, and then applies the short text-segments to segment the longer text-segments based on the weight values recursively until all text-segments cannot be further divided. The resultant text-segments can thus be identified as terms based on a specified threshold. The initial experimental result on a set of traditional Chinese documents shows that this system can achieve a minimum of 76.39% of recall rate and a minimum of 91.05% of precision rate on retrieving multiple occurrences terms, which include 18.30% of new identified terms. Abstract

This paper presents the development of a novel personal concept-based multilingual Web content mining system. Multilingual linguistic knowledge required by multilingual Web content mining is made available by encoding all multilingual concept-term relationships within a multilingual concept space using self-organising map. With this linguistic knowledge base, a personal space of interest is generated to reveal the conceptual content of a user's multiple topics of interest using the user's bookmark file. To personalise the multilingual Web content mining process, a concept-based Web crawler is developed to automatically gather multilingual web documents that are relevant to the user's topics of interest As such, user-oriented concept-focused knowledge discovery in the multilingual Web is facilitated. Abstract

Cross-lingual text retrieval (CLTR) is a technique for locating relevant documents in different languages. The authors have developed fuzzy conceptual indexing (FCI) to extend CLTR to include documents that share concepts but don't contain exact translations of query terms. In FCI, documents and queries are represented as a function of language-independent concepts, thus enabling direct mapping between them across multiple languages.
