Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis due to vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (CVST-VITT) is an adverse drug reaction occurring after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination. CVST-VITT patients often present with large intracerebral haemorrhages and a high proportion undergoes decompressive surgery. Clinical characteristics, therapeutic management and outcomes of CVST-VITT patients who underwent decompressive surgery are described and predictors of in-hospital mortality in these patients are explored. METHODS: Data from an ongoing international registry of patients who developed CVST within 28 days of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, reported between 29 March 2021 and 10 May 2022, were used. Definite, probable and possible VITT cases, as defined by Pavord et al. (N Engl J Med 2021; 385: 1680-1689), were included. RESULTS: Decompressive surgery was performed in 34/128 (27%) patients with CVST-VITT. In-hospital mortality was 22/34 (65%) in the surgical and 27/94 (29%) in the non-surgical group (p < 0.001). In all surgical cases, the cause of death was brain herniation. The highest mortality rates were found amongst patients with preoperative coma (17/18, 94% vs. 4/14, 29% in the non-comatose; p < 0.001) and bilaterally absent pupillary reflexes (7/7, 100% vs. 6/9, 67% with unilaterally reactive pupil, and 4/11, 36% with bilaterally reactive pupils; p = 0.023). Postoperative imaging revealed worsening of index haemorrhagic lesion in 19 (70%) patients and new haemorrhagic lesions in 16 (59%) patients. At a median follow-up of 6 months, 8/10 of surgical CVST-VITT who survived admission were functionally independent. CONCLUSIONS: Almost two-thirds of surgical CVST-VITT patients died during hospital admission. Preoperative coma and bilateral absence of pupillary responses were associated with higher mortality rates. Survivors often achieved functional independence.

Abstract

This paper presents a thermo-elasto-hydrodynamics model (TEHD) based on a mass conservative generalized Reynolds equation, coupled with three-dimensional (3D) energy equation for the oil film, and a full 3D thermo-mechanical model for the pads. The model uses a regularization technique to consider film thickness discontinuities created by scratches. The numerical results are compared to the experimental results obtained from a rocker-backed, five tilting pads journal bearing (TPJB) with single and multiple scratches. The numerical model achieved good agreement, especially with respect to pad temperatures and dynamic coefficients. Discrepancies were observed at low speed but only on the stiffness in the load direction. The numerical model shows a significant drop in the pressure field at the location of the scratches, and a significant pressure rise between two consecutive scratches accompanied by a decrease in film thickness.

Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) due to vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) is a severe condition, with high in-hospital mortality rates. Here, we report clinical outcomes of patients with CVT-VITT after SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) vaccination who survived initial hospitalization. METHODS: We used data from an international registry of patients who developed CVT within 28 days of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, collected until February 10, 2022. VITT diagnosis was classified based on the Pavord criteria. Outcomes were mortality, functional independence (modified Rankin Scale score 0-2), VITT relapse, new thrombosis, and bleeding events (all after discharge from initial hospitalization). RESULTS: Of 107 CVT-VITT cases, 43 (40%) died during initial hospitalization. Of the remaining 64 patients, follow-up data were available for 60 (94%) patients (37 definite VITT, 9 probable VITT, and 14 possible VITT). Median age was 40 years and 45/60 (75%) patients were women. Median follow-up time was 150 days (interquartile range, 94-194). Two patients died during follow-up (3% [95% CI, 1%-11%). Functional independence was achieved by 53/60 (88% [95% CI, 78%-94%]) patients. No new venous or arterial thrombotic events were reported. One patient developed a major bleeding during follow-up (fatal intracerebral bleed). CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to the high mortality of CVT-VITT in the acute phase, mortality among patients who survived the initial hospitalization was low, new thrombotic events did not occur, and bleeding events were rare. Approximately 9 out of 10 CVT-VITT patients who survived the acute phase were functionally independent at follow-up.

Contains fulltext : 282309.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), OBJECTIVE: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) caused by vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) is a rare adverse effect of adenovirus-based severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines. In March 2021, after autoimmune pathogenesis of VITT was discovered, treatment recommendations were developed. These comprised immunomodulation, non-heparin anticoagulants, and avoidance of platelet transfusion. The aim of this study was to evaluate adherence to these recommendations and its association with mortality. METHODS: We used data from an international prospective registry of patients with CVT after the adenovirus-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. We analyzed possible, probable, or definite VITT-CVT cases included until January 18, 2022. Immunomodulation entailed administration of intravenous immunoglobulins and/or plasmapheresis. RESULTS: Ninety-nine patients with VITT-CVT from 71 hospitals in 17 countries were analyzed. Five of 38 (13%), 11 of 24 (46%), and 28 of 37 (76%) of the patients diagnosed in March, April, and from May onward, respectively, were treated in-line with VITT recommendations (p < 0.001). Overall, treatment according to recommendations had no statistically significant influence on mortality (14/44 [32%] vs 29/55 [52%], adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.43, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.16-1.19). However, patients who received immunomodulation had lower mortality (19/65 [29%] vs 24/34 [70%], adjusted OR = 0.19, 95% CI = 0.06-0.58). Treatment with non-heparin anticoagulants instead of heparins was not associated with lower mortality (17/51 [33%] vs 13/35 [37%], adjusted OR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.24-2.04). Mortality was also not significantly influenced by platelet transfusion (17/27 [63%] vs 26/72 [36%], adjusted OR = 2.19, 95% CI = 0.74-6.54). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with VITT-CVT, adherence to VITT treatment recommendations improved over time. Immunomodulation seems crucial for reducing mortality of VITT-CVT. ANN NEUROL

19. Colonization of geranium foliage by Clonostachys rosea f. catenulata, a biological control agent of botrytis grey mould

Abstract

The ecological requirements for the colonization of geranium leaves by the biocontrol agent Clonostachys rosea f. catenulata strain J1446 were investigated. Although this biocontrol agent is a soil-inhabiting fungus, treatment of geranium foliage with the agent can reduce grey mould caused by Botrytis cinerea in the greenhouse. To characterize the extent of foliar colonization, a GUS-transformed isolate of C. rosea f. catenulata was applied to foliage of two geranium cultivars, Pelargonium X hortorum and Pelargonium X domesticum. Population levels of C. rosea f. catenulata were found to be highest on senescent leaves and stems, followed by fully expanded leaves, and lowest on newly emerged leaves of both cultivars. Optimum temperature for leaf and petiole colonization was 20-25 °C for both cultivars. The biocontrol agent required at least 12 h of continuous leaf wetness to achieve maximum population densities on the leaves and stems of both cultivars. On whole plants, colonization was significantly higher on wounded leaves, stems, and senescing leaves compared with that on nonwounded leaves, stems, and mature leaves, respectively. GUS staining indicated that the fungus preferentially colonized the wound sites of leaves and the cut portions of stems. Results indicate that this biocontrol agent can successfully colonize the foliage of geraniums, thus demonstrating the endophytic ability of C. rosea f. catenulata in both root and foliar tissues. L'auteur a examine les besoins ecologiques pour la colonisation des feuilles du geranium par l'agent de maitrise biologique, Clonostachys rosea f. catenulata, souche J1446. Bien que cet agent de lutte biologique soit un champignon du sol, le traitement des feuilles de geranium avec cet agent peut reduire la moisissure grise causee par le Botrytis cinerea en serre. Pour caracteriser l'etendue de la colonisation foliaire, on a applique un isolat du C. rosea gus-tranforme sur le feuillage de deux cultivars de geranium, le Pelargonium x hortorum et le Pelargonium x domesticum. On constate une importance decroissante des populations du C . rosea sur les feuilles senescentes et sur la tige, suivie par les feuilles pleinement developpees, et enfin les feuilles les plus basses nouvellement emergees, chez les deux cultivars. Les temperatures optimales pour la colonisation des feuilles et des petioles voisinent les 20-25 °C, chez les deux cultivars. L'agent de maitrise biologique necessite au moins 12 heures d'humectation continue des feuilles pour l'obtention de densites de population maximales sur les feuilles et les tiges, chez les deux cultivars. Sur la plante entiere, on observe une colonisation significativement plus importante sur les feuilles blessees, les tiges et les feuilles senescentes, comparativement aux feuilles non blessees, aux tiges et aux feuilles matures respectivement. La coloration GUS indique que le champignon colonise preferentiellement les sites de blessures des feuilles et les parties coupees des tiges. Les resultats indiquent que cet agent de maitrise biologique peut coloniser avec succes le feuillage des geraniums, demontrant ainsi la capacite endophytique du C. rosea f. catenulata, dans les racines aussi bien que dans les tissus foliaires. Abstract

Detection of faults in roller element bearing is a topic widely discussed in the scientific field. Bearings diagnostics is usually performed by analyzing experimental signals, almost always vibration signals, measured during operation. A number of signal processing techniques have been proposed and applied to measured vibrations. The diagnostic effectiveness of the techniques depends on their capacities and on the environmental conditions (i.e. environmental noise). The current trend, especially from an industrial point of view, is to couple the prognostics to the diagnostics. The realization of a prognostic procedure require the definition of parameters able to describe the bearing condition during its operation. Monitoring the values of these parameters during time allows to define their trends depending on the progress of the wear. In this way, a relation between the variation of the selected parameters and the wear progress, useful for diagnostics and prognostics of bearings in real industrial applications, can be established. In this paper, a laboratory test-rig designed to perform endurance tests on roller element bearing is presented. Since the test-rig has operated for a short time, only some preliminary available results are discussed.

Abstract

Slippage in the contact roller-races has always played a central role in the field of diagnostics of rolling element bearings. Due to this phenomenon, vibrations triggered by a localized damage are not strictly periodic and therefore not detectable by means of common spectral functions as power spectral density or discrete Fourier transform. Due to the strong second order cyclostationary component, characterizing these signals, techniques such as cyclic coherence, its integrated form and square envelope spectrum have proven to be effective in a wide range of applications. An expert user can easily identify a damage and its location within the bearing components by looking for particular patterns of peaks in the output of the selected cyclostationary tool. These peaks will be found in the neighborhood of specific frequencies, that can be calculated in advance as functions of the geometrical features of the bearing itself. Unfortunately the non-periodicity of the vibration signal is not the only consequence of the slippage: often it also involves a displacement of the damage characteristic peaks from the theoretically expected frequencies. This issue becomes particularly important in the attempt to develop highly automated algorithms for bearing damage recognition, and, in order to correctly set thresholds and tolerances, a quantitative description of the magnitude of the above mentioned deviations is needed. This paper is aimed at identifying the dependency of the deviations on the different operating conditions. This has been possible thanks to an extended experimental activity performed on a full scale bearing test rig, able to reproduce realistically the operating and environmental conditions typical of an industrial high power electric motor and gearbox. The importance of load will be investigated in detail for different bearing damages. Finally some guidelines on how to cope with such deviations will be given, accordingly to the expertise obtained in the experimental activity.

Abstract

In this paper, a comparison between two different machine tool columns is presented. The two columns are realized with a different technology: classic metalworking versus metal foam sandwiches. The aim of the experimental tests is the evaluation of their different mechanical performances and characteristics, with a particular focus on the dynamic response and on the convenience to consider system damping as a key parameter. This kind of comparison is generally believed as difficult, because the foam-filled structures usually show not-linear behavior, which makes not applicable the usual experimental modal procedures. The comparison is carried out in terms of both modal analysis and wide frequency range excitation, as described in the paper. Abstract

In the field of diagnostics of rolling element bearings, the development of sophisticated techniques, such as Spectral Kurtosis and 2nd Order Cyclostationarity, extended the capability of expert users to identify not only the presence, but also the location of the damage in the bearing. Most of the signal-analysis methods, as the ones previously mentioned, result in a spectrum-like diagram that presents line frequencies or peaks in the neighbourhood of some theoretical characteristic frequencies, in case of damage. These frequencies depend only on damage position, bearing geometry and rotational speed. The major improvement in this field would be the development of algorithms with high degree of automation. This paper aims at this important objective, by discussing for the first time how these peaks can draw away from the theoretical expected frequencies as a function of different working conditions, i.e. speed, torque and lubrication. After providing a brief description of the peak-patterns associated with each type of damage, this paper shows the typical magnitudes of the deviations from the theoretical expected frequencies. The last part of the study presents some remarks about increasing the reliability of the automatic algorithm. The research is based on experimental data obtained by using artificially damaged bearings installed in a gearbox.
