Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have gained considerable attention due to their potential applications in emerging biosensor platforms. The use of conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) as active materials in OECTs is particularly advantageous owing to their functional, water‐processable, and biocompatible nature, as well as their tunable electronic and ionic transport properties. However, there exists a lack of systematic studies of the structure‐property relationships of these materials with respect to OECT performance. This study shows how by tuning the molecular weight of self‐doped CPE (CPE‐K) it is possible to fabricate OECTs with a µC* value of 14.7 F cm−1 V−1 s−1, one order of magnitude higher than previously reported CPE‐based devices. Furthermore, OECTs with a transconductance of 120 mS are demonstrated via device engineering. While CPE‐K batches with different molecular weights show good doping behavior and high volumetric capacitance, as confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the medium molecular weight possesses the highest carrier mobility of ≈0.1 cm2 V−1 s−1 leading to the highest transconductance. The enhanced charge transport is due to a favorable charge percolation pathway, as revealed by the combination of X‐ray analysis and conductive atomic force microscope. New solution-processable chrysene-basked deep-blue fluorescent dendrimers consisting of chrysene as a core end-capped by carbazole dendrons were designed, synthesized, and characterized. These dendrimers exhibit strong deep-blue emissions in solution or thin-film states with decent hole mobility and high thermal and electrochemical stability. They can be effectively used as nondoped emitters in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The nondoped OLEDs, which have a simple structure, showed good electroluminescence (EL) performance (luminance: 2334–2400 cd m–2 ; external quantum efficiency: 1.88-2.51%; turn-on voltage: 3.8–4.0 V) and deep-blue EL spectra (CIE y : 0.065–0.075) with a narrow full width at half maximum of 61–65 nm. Microbial bioelectronics require interfacing microorganisms with electrodes. The resulting abiotic/biotic platforms provide the basis of a range of technologies, including energy conversion and diagnostic assays. Organic semiconductors (OSCs) provide a unique strategy to modulate the interfaces between microbial systems and external electrodes, thereby improving the performance of these incipient technologies. In this review, we explore recent progress in the field on how OSCs, and related materials capable of charge transport, are being used within the context of microbial systems, and more specifically bacteria. We begin by examining the electrochemical communication modes in bacteria and the biological basis for charge transport. Different types of synthetic organic materials that have been designed and synthesized for interfacing and interrogating bacteria are discussed next, followed by the most commonly used characterization techniques for evaluating transport in microbial, synthetic, and hybrid systems. A range of applications is subsequently examined, including biological sensors and energy conversion systems. The review concludes by summarizing what has been accomplished so far and suggests future design approaches for OSC bioelectronics materials and technologies that hybridize characteristic properties of microbial and OSC systems.
