As reef meso-predators, sea snakes play an important role in reef ecosystems and are bio-indicators foreel populations and overall reef health. Strong evidence suggests that marine snakes are able to identifychanges in environmental conditions (i.e. tide, lunar phase, water temperature, air pressure) and usethese as cues to alter behaviour to capture prey, avoid predators, find mates, and survive stormconditions. However, research on this topic has been restricted to changes in the observed abundance ofsnakes at different time periods, with few data on continuous movements and use of space of theseanimals over extended periods. In this study, we incorporated mark-recapture data collected usingregular underwater surveys with passive acoustic telemetry methods and local citizen science initiativesto study the ecology of sea snakes at a higher resolution and identify environmental factors that influencetheir movements and home ranges in Noumea, New Caledonia. The increased resolution of movementsand habitat use gained from the combination of methods of data collection highlighted strong tidal andseasonal patterns of residency in Olive-headed sea snakes (Hydrophis major). We also found strongspecies-specific differences in dispersal capacities across three species of sea snake commonly found inNoumea (Emydocephalus annulatus, Hydrophis major, Aipysurus duboisii), highlighting variable habitatuse patterns within a single site. Movement and habitat use information can provide an insight into howsea snake populations may react to acute or chronic changes to the ecosystem.

Acoustic telemetry was used to study the movement patterns of 4 species of fish in a coral habitat in New Caledonia (45 fish: Epinephelus maculatus, Plectropomus leopardus, Chlorurus microrhinos and Scarus ghobban). The study area includes a marine reserve and 2 unprotected reefs separated by 900 to 2000 m of soft lagoon beds. The fish were detected from a few hours to 531 days. 60% of individuals were detected less than half of their theoretical follow-up period (375 days). During the duration of the experiment, the majority of the fish showed periods of loyalty to the site. However, only 40.5% of these periods lasted more than 3 months. Contrary to what was expected, the majority of individuals presented dispersive movement patterns both at the scale of the reserve and at the scale of the study area (3 reefs): post-reintroduction movements (6 cases homing), excursion, migration, relocation and high level of displacement. If we exclude post reintroduction movements which were probably induced by the experimental protocol, 62% of the individuals showed dispersive behavior, ranging from a simple intra-reef excursion (a few hundred meters) to a relocation on a reef. located 6 km. 20% of fish have made reef changes. These results indicate that the populations of the 3 reefs studied are connected despite the fragmentation and that the Larégnère islet marine reserve could support the area fished for several kilometers by spillover. Ces résultats indiquent que les populations des 3 récifs étudiés sont connectées malgré la fragmentation et que la réserve marine de l'îlot Larégnère pourrait soutenir la zone pêchée sur plusieurs kilomètres par spillover. En revanche, les patterns de déplacements identifiés montrent que le dimensionnement actuel de la réserve ne protégereait pas de façon optimale les populations des espèces étudiées et que de plus grandes réserves incluant plusieurs récifs, des fonds meubles lagonaires et des sites de pontes seraient nécessaires pour augmenter de manière pérenne le niveau des peuplements à l'intérieur de la zone protégée. L'importance des différences intraspécifiques par rapport aux différences taxonomiques confirme qu'une grande plasticité phénotypique existe chez les poissons et suggèrent que les politiques de gestion fondées sur l'hypothèse d'un comportement homogène au sein d'une population sont inappropiées à une échelle spatio-temporelle moyenne.

Réalisée en Nouvelle-Calédonie après le passage du cyclone Erica, la présente étude a pour but de comparer les caractéristiques générales et la structure des communautés des poissons de trois récifs coralliens dont le statut de protection diffère. La richesse spécifique, la densité et la biomasse des familles de poissons d’intérêt commercial dans la région Pacifique et des espèces commercialisées en Nouvelle-Calédonie ont été estimées par comptage visuel en plongée. Pour l’ensemble des espèces d’intérêt commercial, la comparaison des trois récifs montre que ces indices ne présentent pas de différence significative. Pour les espèces commercialisées, la comparaison des indices globaux confirme les effets attendus des mesures de protection (pêche interdite), à savoir des valeurs significativement plus importantes dans la réserve, soit respectivement +15% et +28% pour la richesse spécifique, +65% et +107% pour la densité et +94% et +158% pour la biomasse. La même tendance est observée au niveau des principales familles commerciales (Serranidae, Siganidae, Acanthuridae commerciaux et Labridae commerciaux). En revanche, les effets de protection sont plus nuancés en ce qui concerne les Scaridae, pour lesquels seules quelques espèces à forte valeur ajoutée, dont Chlorurus microrhinos, ont une densité et une biomasse significativement plus importante dans la réserve. L’analyse de la structure des peuplements (AFC) a révélé l’existence de 3 assemblages de poissons (un groupe de stations touchées par le cyclone, un groupe réserve et un groupe non réserve) qui s’avèrent n’être que partiellement liés aux caractéristiques du substrat s’ils sont comparés aux résultats d’une analyse sous contrainte (ACC). Cette étude a donc montré que la mise en réserve induit des modifications de la structure des populations de poissons d’intérêt commercial, bien que les caractéristiques du substrat restent un facteur structurant majeur dans leur organisation. Enfin, il a été montré que la densité des espèces commerciales dans les zones non protégées, proches de la réserve, est plus importante qu’elle ne l’était dans la réserve avant la mise en oeuvre de moyens de protection. Ces résultats, ainsi que le relatif maintien des peuplements observé depuis 9 ans dans la réserve, permettent d’émettre l’hypothèse d’interactions significatives entre les zones protégées et non protégées proches.

This study examines the frequentation of feeding sites by the pink whipray (Himantura fai) in the lagoon of Moorea (French Polynesia) from April 2005 to March 2006. Six multidirectional hydrophones (VEMCO VR 2) were deployed at 1.5-3 m depth in the North-western area of the Moorea lagoon in which two ray feeding sites were set up for tourism purposes in 1995 and 1999. The study area (1.9 km2) is part of a marine reserve created by the French Polynesian government in October 2004. Fourteen individuals (6 males, 8 females; disc width DW: 73-114 cm) were surgically implanted with individually coded ultrasonic transmitters (VEMCO V8-SC and V13-1H) and presence/absence data were collected for up to 340 days. One ray was never detected. Of the other 13 animals, 7 (4 males, 3 females) showed a maximum presence time on one feeding site (Sand bank) and 4 (1 male, 3 females) favoured the other one (Motu); 2 rays (1 male, 1 female) were detected less than 10% of their total detection time at either of the feeding sites. Both receivers located on the feeding sites detected all 12 individuals during the data collection period and detected a fish an average of 89% of the time daily, whereas the mean daily detection time of the other four receivers - located outside of any feeding arearanged from 27 to 60%. Only one ray was detected by all 6 receivers in the same day. We observed different frequentation patterns between individuals at each feeding site. Daily bimodal pattern related to feeding time is shown but with no correlation with tourist or feeding numbers. Rays show anticipation on feeding times (one or two hours before feeding hours) but they are conditioned and come on sites with or without feeding activity occurring on the selected day. Even if our study suggests that site fidelity exists for 11 individuals out of 13, the long-term impact of feeding on ray behaviour, reproduction and health still needs to be explored.

To date, comparative studies among species at global scales have mostly focused on horizontal movements. Our study addresses the knowledge gap of vertical movements by compiling the first global synthesis of vertical habitat use by elasmobranchs from data obtained by deployment of 989 biotelemetry tags on 38 elasmobranch species. Elasmobranchs displayed high intra- and interspecific variability in vertical movement patterns. Substantial vertical overlap was observed for many epipelagic elasmobranchs, indicating an increased likelihood to display spatial overlap, biologically interact, and share similar risk to anthropogenic threats that vary on a vertical gradient.
