9. The modal analysis of laminated composite cylinders under axial tension loading in ANSYS

Abstract

Natural frequencies and vibration modes of laminated composite cylinders were calculated under axial tension loading by the finite element method using ANSYS Mechanical software package. Two types of axial tensile load were modelled: a suspended weight and a static axial load in the zone of weight attachment into the cylinder. The features of the modal analysis of a prestressed system depending on the type of applied tensile load were analyzed. The numerical results obtained were compared and the possible reasons for their discrepancy were explained.

10. The effect of manufacture process on material properties of laminated composite cylinders using non-destructive technique

Abstract

This paper presents a comparative investigation of the effect of hand lay-up to manufacture of composite structure on the elastic constants of composite cylindrical shells. Non-destructive technique for detection of elastic constants in laminated composite cylinders were applied. This technique based on numerical-experimental method that included experimental testing and numerical modelling. Experimental testing includes determination of natural frequencies in composite cylinders fixed at the ends. Composite construction fixed by upper end on the special test bench to realize clamped-free boundary conditions. 48 piezo sensors were glued on the outer surface of composite shells to measure strains during testing. Data received during experiments were converted in modal parameters using ARTEMIS software. By minimizing the error functional between the numerical and experimental data of the natural frequencies, the properties of laminated composite materials were obtained. It can be seen that elastic constants of the five composite shells have insignificant differences in values and be successfully applied for numerical calculation in further.

Abstract

It is possible to estimate condition of static structures, like bridges and buildings, by monitoring how their modal parameters (frequency, shape and damping) change in time, based on modal parameters relation to mechanical properties. Operational modal analysis (OMA) provides estimation of modal parameters. OMA basic assumption is that excitation forces are random and their amplitude and frequency nature is similar to white noise. For structures with periodic dynamic excitation, like wind turbines or helicopter blades, this assumption is violated, which makes OMA application complicated and unreliable. There is a challenge of extracting periodic components before modal parameter estimation, which otherwise contaminate signals and mask modal information. This paper considers a signal processing tool for extraction of periodic components from signals aiming to perform OMA and to estimate modal parameters. The tool is based on time synchronous averaging and utilizes tachometer signals. The influence of signal processing technique on modal parameters is studied by comparing these parameters with and without given signal processing tool. Abstract

Industrial and civil structures like bridges, wind turbines, pipelines etc., are widely present in rural area. To maintain functionality of these structures, their condition is controlled using Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). SHM assists engineers in finding early structural defects like cracks, deformations, material deterioration, metal fatigue and so on. Monitoring can prevent accidents from happening by giving early warnings and a chance to perform necessary repairs and adjustments to the structure. It is efficient and economically reasonable to have possibility to perform planned repairs well ahead, instead of doing urgent fixing. What is more important, structural condition monitoring improves safety along with reducing maintenance costs. There are numerous non-destructive techniques (ultrasound, Fiber Bragg Grating, acoustic emission) applied for SHM, but the focus of this paper is on vibration-based methods, particularly - Operational Modal Analysis (OMA). The aim of the study is to validate SHM application possibility for a full scale industrial structure using the Operational Modal Analysis based SHM system. The system is designed as a cost-effective solution, mainly by using cheap piezo film deformation sensors and utilizing multi-patch OMA technique. A test was performed and modal parameters of the radar tower were obtained and compared with the FE model. The possibility to perform SHM on an industrial structure was validated.
