Abstract

We report results from the first search for ν_{μ}→ν_{e} transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74×10^{20} protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99±0.11(syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07±0.14(syst). The 3.3σ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1π

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of νμ disappearance in a νμ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of 2.74×1020 protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure Δm322=(2.52-0.18+0.20)×10-3 eV2 and sin2θ23 in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically degenerate best-fit points at sin2θ23=0.43 and 0.60. Results for the inverted mass hierarchy are also presented.

Abstract

The complete 5.4 kton MINOS far detector has been taking data since the beginning of August 2003 at a depth of 2070 meters water-equivalent in the Soudan mine, Minnesota. This paper presents the first MINOS observations of νμ and ν̄μ charged-current atmospheric neutrino interactions based on an exposure of 418 days. The ratio of upward- to downward-going events in the data is compared to the Monte Carlo expectation in the absence of neutrino oscillations, giving Rup/downdata/Rup/downMC=0.62-0.14+0.19(stat.) ±0.02(sys.). An extended maximum likelihood analysis of the observed L/E distributions excludes the null hypothesis of no neutrino oscillations at the 98% confidence level. Using the curvature of the observed muons in the 1.3 T MINOS magnetic field νμ and ν̄μ interactions are separated. The ratio of ν̄μ to νμ events in the data is compared to the Monte Carlo expectation assuming neutrinos and antineutrinos oscillate in the same manner, giving Rν̄μ/νμdata/Rν̄μ/νμMC=0.96-0. 27+0.38(stat.)±0.15(sys.), where the errors are the statistical and systematic uncertainties. Although the statistics are limited, this is the first direct observation of atmospheric neutrino interactions separately for νμ and ν̄μ. © 2006 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Solasodine rhamnosyl glycosides (SRGs) induce apoptosis in a wide variety of cancer cells and are more effective than many well-established anticancer agents. Combination therapy of SRGs with cisplatin treats cisplatin-resistant cells such as lung cancer and breast cancer cells. Anticancer therapies with SRGs have been used intravenously, intraperitoneally, intralesionally, orally, and topically. Data is now presented that in addition to apoptosis and, perhaps as a consequence thereof, SRGs also have an effect of stimulating lasting immunity against cancer as shown with a mouse model and the terminal cancer Sarcoma 180. Mice were inoculated i. p. with Sarcoma 180. Groups of animals were administered SRGs half an hour after Sarcoma 180 inoculation. Mice treated with Sarcoma 180 but not with SRGs all died within 20 days. Four doses of SRGs caused total remission of Sarcoma 180 activity. Mice that went into remission were then reinoculated 20 days later with the cancer. Ten of twelve SRGs cured-animals were resistant to reinduction of terminal doses of the cancer. In comparison, twelve of twelve mice treated with SRGs without initial Sarcoma 180 activity but which were inoculated with Sarcoma 180 cells 20 days later, all died. In addition to apoptosis, SRGs stimulate lasting immunity against cancer. Abstract

This study investigates complex effects of parasitoid infection on herbivore diet choice. Specifically, we examine how immunological resistance, parasitoid infection stage, and parasitoid taxonomic identity affect the pharmacophagous behavior of the polyphagous caterpillar, Grammia incorrupta (Arctiidae). Using a combination of lab and field experiments, we test the caterpillar's pharmacophagous response to pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) over the course of parasitoid infection, as well as the effect of dietary PAs on the caterpillar's immunological response. Previous work from other systems gave the prediction that dietary PAs would be detrimental to the immune response and thus less acceptable to feeding early in the infection, when encapsulation of the parasitoid is most crucial. We found that the feeding acceptability of PAs was indeed low for caterpillars with early-stage parasitoid infections; however, this was not explained by PA interference with immune function. When allowed to choose among three host plant species, individuals harboring early-stage parasitoids increased their consumption of a nutritious plant containing antioxidants. This result was driven by wasp-parasitized caterpillars, whereas fly-parasitized caterpillars increased their consumption of plants containing iridoid glycosides. Individuals in the later time phase of infection exhibited an increase in PA intake that was consistent with previously reported self-medication behavior during late-stage parasitoid infection. This study reveals the depth of complexity and the dynamic nature of herbivore host plant choice, and underscores the importance of considering multitrophic interactions when studying insect diet choice.

Abstract

This Letter reports results from the MINOS experiment based on its initial exposure to neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam. The rates and energy spectra of charged current nu(mu) interactions are compared in two detectors located along the beam axis at distances of 1 and 735 km. With 1.27 x 10(20) 120 GeV protons incident on the NuMI target, 215 events with energies below 30 GeV are observed at the Far Detector, compared to an expectation of 336+/-14 events. The data are consistent with nu(mu) disappearance via oscillations with |Delta(m)2/32|=2.74 +0.44/-0.26 x10(-3)eV(2) and sin(2)(2theta(23))>0.87 (68% C.L.).

Abstract

Duplication of 6q24 leads to 6qter was identified by GTG banding in an infant girl whose father was a balanced translocation carrier 46,XY,t(3;6)(p26 leads to q2402). At birth and at 4 mo she had proportionate short stature, microcephaly, asymmetric micrognathia, bow-shaped upper vermilion, long upper lip, submucous cleft palate, antimongoloid slant of palpebral fissures, telecanthus, prominent eyes, short neck with anterior and lateral webbing, short sternum, overlapping toes, wrist contractures, and hypertonicity. Later she was noted to have psychomotor retardation. Eleven previously published cases and our patient suggest that duplication of 6q (involving at least 6q25 leads to 6qter) produces a highly characteristic syndrome.

Abstract

Wolf syndrome has been recognized since the mid-sixties. It has also been postulated that the loss of 4p16 is the primary reason for the syndrome. However, in a handful of cases the breakpoints have been identified, only a very few of which are exclusively 4p16. In this report we present familial transmission of 4p16 deletion (associated with 8pter----8p21 duplication) in three individuals with typical expression of Wolf syndrome. The transmission occurs from a de novo balanced maternal translocation, 46,XX,t(4;8)(p16;p21). An effort has also been made to distinguish the terminal deletion syndrome from the emerging interstitial deletion syndrome of 4p.
