Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of $\nu_\mu$ disappearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of $2.74 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure $\Delta m^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at $\sin^2\theta_{23} = $ 0.43 and 0.60. Abstract

We report results from the first search for $\nu_\mu\to\nu_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to $2.74\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of $0.99\pm0.11$ (syst.) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of $1.07\pm0.14$ (syst.). The $3.3\sigma$ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors $0.1\pi < \delta_{CP} < 0.5\pi$ in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

This Letter reports results from the MINOS experiment based on its initial exposure to neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam. The rates and energy spectra of charged current nu(mu) interactions are compared in two detectors located along the beam axis at distances of 1 and 735 km. With 1.27x10(20) 120 GeV protons incident on the NuMI target, 215 events with energies below 30 GeV are observed at the Far Detector, compared to an expectation of 336 +/- 14 events. The data are consistent with nu(mu) disappearance via oscillations with vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar=2.74(-0.26)(+0.44)x10(-3) eV(2) and sin(2)(2 theta(23))> 0.87 (68% C.L.).

Feldman is the Harvard author) The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment uses an accelerator-produced neutrino beam to perform precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters in the "atmospheric neutrino" sector associated with muon neutrino disappearance. This long-baseline experiment measures neutrino interactions in Fermilab's NuMI neutrino beam with a near detector at Fermilab and again 735 km downstream with a far detector in the Soudan Underground Laboratory in northern Minnesota. The two detectors are magnetized steel-scintillator tracking calorimeters. They are designed to be as similar as possible in order to ensure that differences in detector response have minimal impact on the comparisons of event rates, energy spectra and topologies that are essential to MINOS measurements of oscillation parameters. 17. Improved Centerpoint Curve Generation Techniques for Four-Precision Position Synthesis Using the Complex Number Approach

Abstract

A method for predetermining the properties of a centerpoint curve of the Burmester curve pair which will result from an arbitrary set of four precision positions is introduced. The method is based on the discovery that the shape of any Burmester curve is dependent on the Grashof type of the associated compatibility linkage. Three improvements over the existing theory result. First, the exact range of the independent parameter which will generate solution dyads may be determined, eliminating the need to search for solutions on a trial-and-error basis. Second, the composition of the centerpoint curve may be predicted in advance, enabling improved plotting techniques. Third, the points comprising the centerpoint curve can be generated in their natural sequential order. These techniques may be readily programmed for automatic computation.

18. Triad Synthesis for up to Five Design Positions With Application to the Design of Arbitrary Planar Mechanisms

Abstract

A new synthesis tool, the triad, is introduced to enable simplified synthesis of very complex planar mechanisms. The triad is a connected string of three vectors representing jointed rigid links of an actual mechanism. The triad is used as a tool to model an original mechanism topology with a set of simpler components. Each triad is then used to generate a set of “relative precision positions” which, in turn, enables the dimensional synthesis of each triad with well-established motion and path generation techniques for simple four-bar linkages. Two independent derivations of the relative precision positions are provided. All common triad geometries amenable to simple dyad synthesis techniques are presented. The triad geometries summarized here may be applied to two, three, four, and five precision position problems using graphical, algebraic, or complex number formulations of Burmester theory. Examples are provided.

Abstract

Duplication of 6q24 leads to 6qter was identified by GTG banding in an infant girl whose father was a balanced translocation carrier 46,XY,t(3;6)(p26 leads to q2402). At birth and at 4 mo she had proportionate short stature, microcephaly, asymmetric micrognathia, bow-shaped upper vermilion, long upper lip, submucous cleft palate, antimongoloid slant of palpebral fissures, telecanthus, prominent eyes, short neck with anterior and lateral webbing, short sternum, overlapping toes, wrist contractures, and hypertonicity. Later she was noted to have psychomotor retardation. Eleven previously published cases and our patient suggest that duplication of 6q (involving at least 6q25 leads to 6qter) produces a highly characteristic syndrome.
