Abstract

This study aims to assess the properties and classification of 40 variable stars in Sagittarius, little studied since their discovery and reported in the Information Bulletin on Variable Stars (IBVS) 985 and update. Using data from previous studies and several astronomical databases, we performed our analysis mainly utilizing a period analysis software and comparing the photometric characteristics of the variables in a Colour-Absolute Magnitude Diagram. For all stars, the variability is confirmed. We discovered new significant results for the period and/or type of 15 variables and highlighted incorrect cross-reference names on astronomical databases for 5 stars. This assessment also identifies 9 cases for which results from the ASAS-SN Catalog of Variable Stars are systematically not consistent with the original light curves. 7. A reduced model using random forest: application on car crash optimization

Abstract

The development of the metal structure of a car is carried out throughout the vehicle project using numerical simulation. The simulation of the crash, which is representative of the most serious accidents, is the most expensive computation of the design process. Each simulation takes about 10 h on a high performance computer. The engineers must regularly carry out optimization studies using their crash model. The optimization method used is based on a Design Of Experiments and requires from 3 to 10 crash computations per parameter that are varied in the study. Studies with dozens of parameters, often cost hundreds of computations, that gives a study delay of several weeks. The statistical models model some scalar variables, which are objectives and constraints of the optimization study. This paper focuses on the use of a reduced crash model to perform an optimization study representative of the standard studies, replacing the statistical models created from the DOE method. The proposed method is based on Regression-CUR which combines features selection and a multiple linear regression model, here replaced by a Random Forest model. The aim is to model all the fields simulated by the crash calculation. The replacement of the linear regression by Random Forest has several advantages such as non-linearity, low memory footprint and efficient computing.

Abstract

When a life history is characterized by both seasonality in reproduction and seasonality in offspring fitness, trade-offs in reproductive traits might be adjustments to seasonal time constraints to optimize reproductive success. Therefore, we compared in the laboratory the trade-offs in reproductive traits between early (after maturity) and delayed (after dormancy) reproduction in young land snails Cornu aspersum (Muller, 1774) (syn. Helix aspersa), depending on food energy content. We also investigated the maternal investment in reproductive output in both breeding periods. After attaining maturity, snails produced single clutches with many small eggs, which resulted, in contrast to previous studies, in large offspring with a low hatching rate owing to high within-clutch cannibalism. The young cannibals may have a higher survival probability in the following hibernation. Snails starting to reproduce after hibernation had smaller clutches of larger eggs, resulting in high quantity of lighter offspring. The clutch mass was positively correlated with maternal mass in snails reproducing after having attained maturity and negatively correlated in snails reproducing after hibernation. Multiple oviposition occurred only after hibernation, thereby enhancing reproductive success. An energy-rich diet did not affect reproductive strategies. Further studies should focus on seasonal plasticity of reproductive strategies in natural populations of C. aspersum and investigate survival probabilities of breeders and juveniles in an evolutionary context. Quand un cycle biologique est caracterise a la fois par une saisonnalite de la reproduction et une saisonnalite de la fitness de la descendance, des compromis dans les traits reproductifs peuvent representer des ajustements aux contraintes temporelles pour optimiser le succes de la reproduction. C'est pourquoi nous avons compare en laboratoire les compromis dans les traits reproductifs lors de la reproduction precoce (apres la maturation) et tardive (apres la dormance) chez de jeunes escargots terrestres Cornu aspersum (Muller, 1774) (syn. Helix aspersa) en fonction du contenu eenergetique de leur nourriture. Nous avons aussi mesure l'investissement maternel dans le rendement reproductif durant les deux periodes. Apres l'acquisition de la maturite, les escargots produisent une seule ponte contenant beaucoup de petits oeufs qui donnent, contrairement aux observations des etudes anterieures, une descendance de grands individus avec un taux d'eclosion faible a cause d'un important cannibalisme au sein de la ponte. Il se peut que les jeunes cannibales aient une plus grande probabilite de survie durant l'hibernation subsequente. Les escargots qui commencent leur reproduction apres l'hibernation produisent des pontes plus petites d'oeufs plus gros, ce qui donne un grand nombre de nouveau-nes plus legers. La masse de la ponte est correlee positivement a la masse de la mere chez les escargots qui se reproduisent apres l'acquisition de la maturite; et correelee negativement chez les escargots qui se reproduisent apres l'hibernation. Les pontes multiples ne se produisent qu'apres l'hibernation, ce qui ameliore le succes de la reproduction. Un regime alimentaire riche en energie n'affecte pas les strategies de reproduction. Les etudes futures devraient s'interesser a la plasticite des strategies de reproduction dans les populations naturelles de C. aspersum et etudier les probabilities de survie des reproducteurs et des jeunes dans le contexte de l'evolutif. Abstract

Vascular plants new or rare for Tunisia occurring on the islands (Galite, Zembra, Kuriat, Monastir, Kerkennah, Kneiss, Djerba). - This study concerns the indigenous vascular plants newly reported for Tunisia and discovered on the islands during some field trips performed since 2014. Five native taxa are new to Tunisia: Bellis perennis, Carthamus creticus, Moraea mediterranea, Asplenium balearicum and Galium minutulum, the latter two also being new to North Africa. Information on 24 rare or poorly known taxa, most often of great biogeographical interest, is given, too. Most of these were discovered on the islands of the eastern coast (Kuriat, Monastir, Kerkennah, Kneiss, Djerba), but also on the northern islands of Zembra and La Galite. The new chorological data underline the first-rate conservation importance of these islands and islets for the preservation of the overall coastal biodiversity of Tunisia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The hydrocarbonoclastic bacterium Acinetobacter venetianus RAG-1 has attracted substantial attention due to its powerful oil-degrading capabilities and its potential to play an important ecological role in the cleanup of alkanes. In this study, we compare the transcriptome of the strain RAG-1 grown in dodecane, the corresponding alkanol (dodecanol), and sodium acetate for the characterization of genes involved in dodecane uptake and utilization. Comparison of the transcriptional responses of RAG-1 grown on dodecane led to the identification of 1074 genes that were differentially expressed relative to sodium acetate. Of these, 622 genes were upregulated when grown in dodecane. The highly upregulated genes were involved in alkane catabolism, along with stress response. Our data suggest AlkMb to be primarily involved in dodecane oxidation. Transcriptional response of RAG-1 grown on dodecane relative to dodecanol also led to the identification of permease, outer membrane protein and thin fimbriae coding genes potentially involved in dodecane uptake. This study provides the first model for key genes involved in alkane uptake and metabolism in A. venetianus RAG-1.

Abstract

Water conservation is a critical aspect affecting the survival, distribution and abundance of terrestrial arthropods. In this study we investigate mechanisms of dehydration tolerance of the native, flightless fly, Calycopteryx moseleyi, inhabiting contrasting environments at two localities in the Kerguelen Islands. We compare the survival abilities and management of body water content of adult flies from two different ecophenotypes when exposed to conditions of low relative humidity. Our results suggest a broad plasticity in the responses of C. moseleyi to desiccation, showing distinct local adaptations to environmental conditions.
