Abstract

Neutrinos of astrophysical origin could be detected through the electromagnetic radiation of the particle showers induced in the atmosphere by their interaction in the Earth. This applies in particular for tau neutrinos of energies $E>10^{16}$eV following Earth-skimming trajectories. The $\sim1^{\circ}$ beaming of the radio emission in the forward direction however implies that the radio signal will likely fly above a detector deployed over a flat site and would therefore not be detected. We study here how a non-flat detector topography can improve the detection probability of these neutrino-induced air showers. We do this by computing with three distinct tools the neutrino detection efficiency for a radio array deployed over a toy-model mountainous terrain, also taking into account experimental and topographic constraints. We show in particular that ground topographies inclined by few degrees only induce detection efficiencies typically three times larger than those obtained for flat areas for favorable trajectories. We conclude that the topography of the area where the detector is deployed will be a key factor for an experiment like GRAND., Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

Since 2003, significant efforts have been devoted to the understanding of the radio emission of extensive air shower in the range [20-200] MHz. Despite some studies led until the early nineties, the [1-10] MHz band has remained unused for 20 years. However, it has been measured by some pioneering experiments that extensive air shower emit a strong electric field in this band and that there is evidence of a large increase in the amplitude of the radio pulse at lower frequencies. The EXTASIS experiment, located within the Nan\c{c}ay Radioastronomy Observatory and supported by the CODALEMA experiment, aims to reinvestigate the [1-10] MHz band, and especially to study the so-called "Sudden Death" contribution, the expected electric field emitted by shower front when hitting the ground level. Currently, EXTASIS has confirmed some results obtained by the pioneering experiments, and tends to bring explanations to the other ones, for instance the role of the underlying atmospheric electric field. Moreover, CODALEMA has demonstrated that in the most commonly used frequency band ([20-80] MHz) the electric field profile of EAS can be well sampled, and contains all the information needed for the reconstruction of EAS: an automatic comparison between the SELFAS3 simulations and data has been developed, allowing us to reconstruct in an almost real time the primary cosmic ray characteristics., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1903.02792; text overlap with arXiv:1903.02889

Abstract

Since 2002, the CODALEMA experiment located within the Nan\c{c}ay Radio Observatory studies the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (above 10^{17} eV) arriving in the Earth atmosphere. These cosmic rays interact with the component of the atmosphere, inducing an extensive air shower (EAS) composed mainly of charged particles (electrons and positrons). During the development of the shower in the atmosphere, these charged particles in movement generate a fast electric field transient (a few nanoseconds to a few tens of ns), detected at ground by CODALEMA with dedicated radio antennas over a wide frequency band (between 20 MHz and 200 MHz). The study of this electric field emitted during the shower development aims to determine the characteristics of the primary cosmic ray which has induced the particle shower: its nature, its arrival direction and its energy. After some theoretical considerations and a short description of the SELFAS simulation code, we will present the CODALEMA experiment, its performances and main results. At last, we will show how the EAS radio-detection technique could be used to observe very high energy gamma rays sources, with the NenuFAR radio telescope.

The EXTASIS experiment, located within the Nan\c{c}ay Radioastronomy Observatory and supported by the scintillator array and the autonomous radio stations of the CODALEMA experiment, aims to re-investigate the low-frequency band, and especially to study the so-called "sudden death" contribution, the expected electric field radiated by the shower front when hitting ground level. In this work, we present the instrumental setup of the EXTASIS experiment composed of~$7$ low-frequency antennas operating in [1.7-3.7] MHz and covering approximately \SI{1}{\kilo\metre\squared}. We report the observation of~$18$ air showers detected in coincidence in the three instruments, and estimate a detection threshold of \SI{23\pm4}{\micro\volt\per\metre} from comparisons with detailed SELFAS3 simulations. Abstract

The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) is a planned large-scale observatory of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic particles, with energies exceeding 10^8 GeV. Its goal is to solve the long-standing mystery of the origin of UHE cosmic rays. To do this, GRAND will detect an unprecedented number of UHE cosmic rays and search for the undiscovered UHE neutrinos and gamma rays associated to them with unmatched sensitivity. GRAND will use large arrays of antennas to detect the radio emission coming from extensive air showers initiated by UHE particles in the atmosphere. Its design is modular: 20 separate, independent sub-arrays, each of 10 000 radio antennas deployed over 10 000 km^2. A staged construction plan will validate key detection techniques while achieving important science goals early. Abstract

TREND50 is a radio detection setup of 50 self-triggered antennas working in the 50-100MHz frequency range and deployed in a radio-quiet valley of the Tianshan mountains (China). TREND50 achieved its goal: the autonomous radiodetection and identification of air showers. Thanks to a dedicated offine selection algorithm, 564 air shower candidates were indeed selected out of $7\cdot10^8$ transient radio signals recorded during the 314 live days of data taken during the first two years of operation of this setup (2011 and 2012). This event rate, as well as the distribution of the candidate directions of arrival, is consistent with what is expected from cosmic-ray-induced air showers according to simulations, assuming an additional $\sim$20% contamination of the final sample by background events. This result is obtained at the cost of a reduced air shower detection efficiency, estimated to be $\sim$3%. This low efficiency is mostly due to the large amount of dead time of the setup. Abstract

Over the last decades, radio detection of air showers has been established as a detection technique for ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays impinging on the Earth's atmosphere with energies far beyond LHC energies. Today's second-generation of digital radio-detection experiments, as e.g. AERA or LOFAR, are becoming competitive in comparison to already standard techniques e.g. fluorescence light detection. Thanks to a detailed understanding of the physics of the radio emission in extensive air showers, simulations of the radio signal are already successfully tested and applied in the reconstruction of cosmic rays. However, the limits of the computational power resources are easily reached when it comes to computing electric fields at the numerous positions requested by large or dense antenna arrays. In the case of mountainous areas as e.g. for the GRAND array, where 3D shower simulations are necessary, the problem arises with even stronger acuity. Therefore we developed a full parametrisation of the emitted radio signal on the basis of generic shower simulations which will reduce the simulation time by orders of magnitudes. Abstract

The radio technique for the detection of high energy cosmic rays consists in measuring the electric field created by the particle showers created inside a medium by the primary cosmic ray. The electric field is then used to infer the properties of the primary particle. Nowadays, the radio technique is a standard, well-established technique. While most current experiments measure the field at frequencies above $20$ MHz, several experiments have reported a large emission at low frequencies, below $10$ MHz. The EXTASIS experiment aims at measuring again and understand this low-frequency electric field. Since at low frequencies the standard far-field approximation for the calculation of the electric field does not necessarily hold, in order to comprehend the low-frequency emission we need to go beyond the far-field approximation. We present in this work a formula for the electric field created by a particle track inside a dielectric medium that is valid for all frequencies. We then implement this formula in the SELFAS Monte Carlo code and calculate the low-frequency electric field of EAS. We also introduce the sudden death pulse (SDP), an emission caused by the coherent deceleration of the shower front, and study its properties., Comment: 42 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) aims at detecting ultra-high energy extraterrestrial neutrinos via the extensive air showers induced by the decay of tau leptons created in the interaction of neutrinos under the Earth's surface. The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) is a planned array of ~200 000 radio antennas deployed over ~200 000 km2 in a mountainous site. It aims primarly at detecting high-energy neutrinos via the observation of extensive air showers induced by the decay in the atmosphere of taus produced by the interaction of cosmic neutrinos under the Earth surface. GRAND aims at reaching a neutrino sensitivity of 5.10$^{11}$ E$^{-2}$ GeV$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$sr$^{-1}$ above 3.10$^{16}$ eV. This ensures the detection of cosmogenic neutrinos in the most pessimistic source models, and ~50 events per year are expected for the standard models. The instrument will also detect UHECRs and possibly FRBs. Abstract

High-energy neutrino astronomy will probe the working of the most violent phenomena in the Universe. The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) project consists of an array of $\sim10^5$ radio antennas deployed over $\sim$200000km$^2$ in a mountainous site. It aims at detecting high-energy neutrinos via the measurement of air showers induced by the decay in the atmosphere of $\tau$ leptons produced by the interaction of the cosmic neutrinos under the Earth surface. Our objective with GRAND is to reach a neutrino sensitivity of $3\times10^{-11}E^{-2}$GeV$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$sr$^{-1}$ above $3 \times10^{16}$eV. This sensitivity ensures the detection of cosmogenic neutrinos in the most pessimistic source models, and about 100 events per year are expected for the standard models. GRAND would also probe the neutrino signals produced at the potential sources of UHECRs. Abstract

The recent demonstration by the CODALEMA Collaboration of the ability of the radio-detection technique for the characterization of UHE cosmic-rays calls for the use of this powerful method for the observation of UHE neutrinos. For this purpose, an adaptation of the existing 21CM Array (China) is presently under achievment. In an exceptionally low electromagnetic noise level, 10160 log-periodic 50-200 MHz antennas sit along two high valleys, surrounded by mountain chains. This lay-out results in 30-60 km effective rock thicnesses for neutrino interactions with low incidence trajectories along the direction of two 4-6 km baselines. Abstract

The detection of cosmic rays via the electric field (the so-called radio detection) is nowadays a fully operative technique. With the aim of exploring the low-frequency part of the emission spectrum (below 10 MHz), the EXTASIS experiment has been conceived. Located within the CODALEMA experiment at the Nançay radio-observatory, EXTASIS measures the low-frequency emission coming from the extensive air showers created by cosmic rays. Being able to calculate the electric field at low frequency is crucial in order to correctly interpret our results. We present some results from the EXTASIS experiment and discuss the calculation of the low-frequency radio signal. We also present a new formula for the electric field of a particle track within two semi-infinite media (air and soil).

Abstract

The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) is a planned large-scale observatory of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic particles, with energies exceeding 10^8 GeV. Its goal is to solve the long-standing mystery of the origin of UHE cosmic rays. To do this, GRAND will detect an unprecedented number of UHE cosmic rays and search for the undiscovered UHE neutrinos and gamma rays associated to them with unmatched sensitivity. GRAND will use large arrays of antennas to detect the radio emission coming from extensive air showers initiated by UHE particles in the atmosphere. Its design is modular: 20 separate, independent sub-arrays, each of 10 000 radio antennas deployed over 10 000 km^2. A staged construction plan will validate key detection techniques while achieving important science goals early. Abstract

Since 2003, the NanÇay Radio Observatory hosts the CODALEMA experiment, dedicated to radio detection of cosmic ray induced extensive air showers. CODALEMA also features the R&D EXTASIS project, aiming at detecting the lowfrequency signal ([2-6] MHz) produced at the sudden disappearance of the air shower particles hitting the ground. The 3 current antenna arrays present different antenna density and extent, and can be operated in a joint mode to record simultaneously the radio signal coming from air showers. Therefore, the NanÇay facilities may offer a complete description of the air shower induced electric field at small, medium and large scale, and over an unique and very wide frequency band (from ~ 2 to 200 MHz).

Abstract

High-energy neutrino astronomy will probe the working of the most violent phenomena in the Universe. The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) project consists of an array of ∼ 105 radio antennas deployed over ∼ 200 000 km2 in a mountainous site. It aims at detecting high-energy neutrinos via the measurement of air showers induced by the decay in the atmosphere of τ leptons produced by the interaction of cosmic neutrinos under the Earth surface. Our objective with GRAND is to reach a neutrino sensitivity of 5 × 10−11E−2 GeV−1 cm−2 s−1 sr−1 above 3 × 1016 eV. This sensitivity ensures the detection of cosmogenic neutrinos in the most pessimistic source models, and up to 100 events per year are expected for the standard models. GRAND would also probe the neutrino signals produced at the potential sources of UHECRs.

Abstract

International audience; NenuFAR is a new, large low-frequency radio telescope, in construction and commissioning at the Nançay Radioastronomy Observatory, that starts to provide high sensitivity observations in the 10-85 MHz range. NenuFAR’s 1938 dual polarization antennas are connected to a suite of receivers allowing the instrument to operate, simultaneously if needed, in 4 distinct modes : as a standalone beamformer, a standalone imager, a waveform snapshots recorder, and a giant low-frequency station of the LOFAR array. We provide here an overview of the antennas, receivers, data products, operation and scientific context of the instrument.

Abstract

The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) is a planned large-scale observatory of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic particles, with energies exceeding 108 GeV. Its goal is to solve the long-standing mystery of the origin of UHE cosmic rays. To do this, GRAND will detect an unprecedented number of UHE cosmic rays and search for the undiscovered UHE neutrinos and gamma rays associated to them with unmatched sensitivity. GRAND will use large arrays of antennas to detect the radio emission coming from extensive air showers initiated by UHE particles in the atmosphere. Its design is modular: 20 separate, independent sub-arrays, each of 10000 radio antennas deployed over 10000 km(2). A staged construction plan will validate key detection techniques while achieving important science goals early. Here we present the science goals, detection strategy, preliminary design, performance goals, and construction plans for GRAND.

Abstract

Since 2002, the CODALEMA experiment located within the Nan\c{c}ay Radio Observatory studies the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (above 10^{17} eV) arriving in the Earth atmosphere. These cosmic rays interact with the component of the atmosphere, inducing an extensive air shower (EAS) composed mainly of charged particles (electrons and positrons). During the development of the shower in the atmosphere, these charged particles in movement generate a fast electric field transient (a few nanoseconds to a few tens of ns), detected at ground by CODALEMA with dedicated radio antennas over a wide frequency band (between 20 MHz and 200 MHz). The study of this electric field emitted during the shower development aims to determine the characteristics of the primary cosmic ray which has induced the particle shower: its nature, its arrival direction and its energy. After some theoretical considerations and a short description of the SELFAS simulation code, we will present the CODALEMA experiment, its performances and main results. At last, we will show how the EAS radio-detection technique could be used to observe very high energy gamma rays sources, with the NenuFAR radio telescope.

Abstract

Over the last decades, radio detection of air showers has been established as a detection technique for ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays impinging on the Earth's atmosphere with energies far beyond LHC energies. Today's second-generation of digital radio-detection experiments, as e.g. AERA or LOFAR, are becoming competitive in comparison to already standard techniques e.g. fluorescence light detection. Thanks to a detailed understanding of the physics of the radio emission in extensive air showers, simulations of the radio signal are already successfully tested and applied in the reconstruction of cosmic rays. However, the limits of the computational power resources are easily reached when it comes to computing electric fields at the numerous positions requested by large or dense antenna arrays. In the case of mountainous areas as e.g. for the GRAND array, where 3D shower simulations are necessary, the problem arises with even stronger acuity. Therefore we developed a full parametrisation of the emitted radio signal on the basis of generic shower simulations which will reduce the simulation time by orders of magnitudes.
