3. Mutually Unbiased Bases and Their Symmetries

Abstract

We present and generalize the basic ideas underlying recent work aimed at the construction of mutually unbiased bases in finite dimensional Hilbert spaces with the help of group and graph theoretical concepts. In this approach finite groups are used to construct maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases. Thus the prime number restrictions of previous approaches are circumvented and this construction principle sheds new light onto the intricate relation between mutually unbiased bases and characteristic geometrical structures of Hilbert spaces.

Abstract

Abstract Measles is a highly contagious disease. A 24 years old patient, recently exposed to measles (unvaccinated), presented in the emergency department with severe agitation, compatible with an acute psychotic episode, during the measles epidemic which spread in Israel in 2018–2019. Upon hospital admission, strict isolation was instructed, yet, without compliance, probably due to the patient’s status. Measles diagnosis was promptly confirmed. As measles transmission was eminent, public health measures were employed through immediate implementation of the section 15 of the Public Health Ordinance, allowing for compulsory short-term isolation. The patient’s condition improved within a few days and the measures were no longer necessary. This measles case occurred in the pre-Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic when use of a Public Health Ordinance was considered an extreme measure. This is in contrast to the current global use of Public Health laws to enforce strict quarantine and isolation on persons infected or potentially exposed to COVID-19. Nevertheless, minimizing infectious diseases transmission is a core function of public health law. Utilizing legal enforcement in circumstances of immediate public health hazard, such as nosocomial measles transmission, necessitates careful consideration. The integrative clinical and public health approach and prompt measures employed in this exceptional case, led to prevention of further infection spread.

5. Detected jump-error correcting quantum codes, quantum error designs and quantum computation

Abstract

The recently introduced detected-jump correcting quantum codes are capable of stabilizing qubit-systems against spontaneous decay processes arising from couplings to statistically independent reservoirs. These embedded quantum codes exploit classical information about which qubit has emitted spontaneously and correspond to an active error-correcting code embedded in a passive error-correcting code. The construction of a family of one detected jump-error correcting quantum codes is shown and the optimal redundancy, encoding and recovery as well as general properties of detected jump-error correcting quantum codes are discussed. By the use of design theory multiple jump-error correcting quantum codes can be constructed. The performance of one jump-error correcting quantum codes under non-ideal conditions is studied numerically by simulating a quantum memory and Grover's algorithm.

Abstract

A new class of error-correcting quantum codes is introduced capable of stabilizing qubits against spontaneous decay arising from couplings to statistically independent reservoirs. These quantum codes are based on the idea of using an embedded quantum code and exploiting the classical information available about which qubit has been affected by the environment. They are immediately relevant for quantum computation and information processing using arrays of trapped ions or nuclear spins. Interesting relations between these quantum codes and basic notions of design theory are established.

12. Invariants and projective planes

Abstract

In this thesis we study the isomorphism problem for finite projective planes and in particular for translation planes by using newly defined isomorphism invariants for projective planes. We consider two invariants; one which was proposed by J. H. Conway and is applicable to general projective planes, and another invariant defined only for translation planes. The isomorphism problem poses a serious obstacle in investigations of projective planes, as illustrated by the following remarks (contained in a paper by Hall, Swift and Killgrove). 'No satisfactory mechanical way to identify two isomorphic planes exists whether they be presented by a coordinate system or by an incidence matrix. The preparation of such a method is an interesting question.' The approach developed in this thesis provides a partial solution to this problem. We also study the related problem of determining the automorphism group of a projective plane. It turns out that for two-dimensional translation planes of odd order, the methods developed here reduce this problem to a routine calculation of an invariant. We have implemented the above invariants (and a variant) for computation, and used them to study the translation planes of orders: 52, 72, 82, 112 and 172 arising from the families of 8-dimensional ovoids defined by Conway et al and others. As a consequence of this investigation we obtain a number of new translation planes and determine their groups. We have also established previously unknown isomorphisms between certain translation planes occurring in the literature. We have found that the invariants have certain interesting properties and I have formulated a number of conjectures regarding these. The conjectures have been verified for all projective planes considered in this thesis, and we offer some comments regarding possibilities for their proof.
