13. A New Numerical algorithm for two-phase flows drift-flux model with staggered grid in porous media

Abstract

FLICA4 is a 3D compressible code dedicated to reactor core analysis. FLICA4 solves for two-phase flows in porous media using a compressible drift-flux model [2]. To derive convective fluxes, FLICA4 uses a specific finite volume numerical method based on an extension of the Roe’s approximate Riemann colocated solver [3]. The method is developped to solve 1D flows. It requires adjustments to solve for 2D or 3D flows, at low Mach number, on a cartesian mesh. As Mach number goes to zero, in some extreme 2D or 3D cases, the native method does converge but the solution is not consistent with the analytical or experimental solution [4]. A so-called “pressure correction“ is added to the initial solver to derive an accurate solution. However, this extra term produces checkerboard oscillations in space for most applications of interest, even when solving for 1D flows. These checkerboard oscillations are sometimes critical and may lead to unstable solutions or divergence of the solver. The paper presents the analysis of an alternative numerical algorithm to solve for compressible drift-flux model in the low Mach regime. The current study aims at investigating a new compressible scheme that is both accurate and robust at low Mach number on staggered grids. The actual behavior of the new scheme is tested against simplified nuclear core ”boiling channel” study cases in the low Mach regime. The tests are extended to compressible regime for flows exhibiting both shock waves and no shock waves. The paper shows that the alternative numerical algorithm leads to numerical solutions that are very close to analytical solutions. Moreover, no more checkboard oscillations are generated. Therefore, the algorithm is a real improvement to FLICA4 current numerical method.

Abstract

International audience; Additive manufacturing techniques based on liquid resins, such as digital light processing (DLP), demonstrate higher resolution and accuracy than other printing techniques, but their applications have been hindered by the limited materials selection. Overall, there have been numerous successes in printing acrylic-epoxy resins but the final parts generally suffer from relatively poor mechanical properties. In this study, hybrid printable formulations that are based on acrylic-epoxy resins and ceramic filler are introduced and their printability on DLP machines is demonstrated. Here, we present an ultraviolet (UV) printed acrylic-epoxy with high Young modulus via a two-stage curing approach. Herein, different experiments are used to investigate the evolution of the materials properties during the post-process. Indeed, we conduct experiments to characterize the physico-chemical features and the evolution of mechanical properties before and after post-process. Finally we report the preparation of polymeric rapid tooling inserts with tailored mechanical and physical properties, which were used as injection molding cavities for prototyping and low volume production.

Abstract

Foldable composite structures are bellows-like structures that can be stored in a flat state and deployed to a finite volume after folding. These composite structures are being increasingly demanded for numerous engineering applications including aerospace, aeronautics, robotics and medical. In this study, we report an original processing route for obtaining foldable composite laminates. These composite laminates were obtained by selectively curing pre-impregnated materials that were made of three layers of plain weave fabrics impregnated with an UV-curable epoxy-acrylate resin system. After selective curing, the composite laminates were made of rigid domains (cured zones) connected by flexible domains (uncured zones) that played the role of hinges upon folding. The selective curing of the photocurable resin system was performed using two different approaches. The first approach consisted in depositing UV-blocking masks designed numerically onto the surface of pre-impregnated materials before placing them inside the chamber of an UV-curing machine. The second one consisted in using a Digital Light Processing (DLP) 3D printing machine. The UV-curable epoxy acrylate resin exhibited fast curing kinetics characterized by a gelation time on the order of 1 s. Hence, both types of approaches enabled foldable composite laminates with very short time cycles (≈ 5 to 10 s) to be obtained. The as-obtained pre-impregnated sheets were folded into 3D composite structures and then irradiated with UV-light. This original fabrication method is versatile enough to provide a wide diversity of composite part geometries that are promising for many engineering applications. The observations of the microstructure of processed samples revealed that the reinforcement fabrics were rather well impregnated by the epoxy acrylate resin. These observations also tended to show that both types of approaches enabled a complete and efficient in-depth curing of the resin system.

Abstract

Eye irritation is a key human health endpoint assessed by in vitro and in vivo methods. One of the commonly used scoring methods to quantify the eye irritation potential of chemicals is the Modified Maximum Average Score (MMAS). It is dependent on the eye irritation effects (e.g. corneal opacity) originally proposed by Draize and then partially adopted by the OECD TG 405. These scores are not always fully reported in regulatory dossiers and lead to several drawbacks, 1) the difficulty to translate MMAS into a classification within the existing EU CLP/UN GHS criteria, 2) the absence of corrosion (serious eye damage), and 3) the dependency on input parameters which are usually not required under the OECD TGs (e.g. eye surface area). This study determined if classification can be driven by a maximum of two observed effects thereby simplifying the scoring calculation. The Simplified Irritation Index (SIIEYE), based only on corneal opacity and conjunctival redness, was developed using validated studies representing multiple chemical groups. A correlation was observed between the MMAS and the SIIEYE allowing harmonisation of the classification for the existing data. This index proved to be useful in the development of in silico model.

Abstract

Au croisement des métiers de la plasturgie et de l’électronique, la plastronique constitue un nouveau champ technologique et ouvre de nouvelles opportunités pour miniaturiser et intégrer de manière optimale des systèmes électroniques aux objets polymères en trois dimensions – 3D. De nouveaux procédés émergent et trouvent des applications innovantes dans de nombreux secteurs d’activité. A cet égard, l’intérêt des industriels et des étudiants est en pleine croissance. Il convient de répondre à ces attentes avec un éventail de formations appropriées et de les accompagner par des enseignements spécifiques que nous souhaitons originaux. Cet article introduit la plastronique et plus particulièrement le procédé plastronique 3D appelé Electronique Structurelle Surmoulée (ESS, IME – In Mold Electronics). Il présente également les étapes du travail expérimental et pratique de mise en oeuvre d’un projet étudiant. L’objectif est de s’adapter aux niveaux des apprenants et aux objectifs pédagogiques désirés. Il s’agit de réaliser, dans son ensemble, un dispositif fonctionnel concret suscitant l’éveille et l’intérêt des apprenants.

Abstract

In order to consider thermal conditions involved in laser sintering (LS), the effect of temperature on the flow properties of a polyamide 12 powder was assessed. Shear tests were carried out at temperatures from ambient up to values close to the melting temperature of the polymer. The measurement method provides quantitative descriptors of powder flowability. Experiments indicate that flowability significantly deteriorates when temperature rises and approaches a value of about 20 °C lower than the melting temperature. The spreading process may be hindered by natural agglomeration of the material. A simple analysis based on the extrapolation of the bulk flow properties at zero consolidation shows that agglomeration is excluded in the temperature range between 100 and 140 °C. This turns out to be the range in which it is known that the material can be used safely for LS applications.

Abstract

This work investigates the capacity of a particular class of flows, namely drag and pressure driven flows, to propagate and distorts a transient sinusoidal temperature disturbance occurring at the inlet of the metering zone of a polymer processing screw channel. The integral transform method is applied to the forced convection heat transfer problem in a parallel plate channel with a general drag and pressure driven flow velocity profile for a Newtonian fluid, with the pressure gradient as an adjustable flow parameter. We follow closely the procedure outlined by Cotta and Ozisik in their seminal paper [5]. We found that the knowledge of the lowest eigenvalue in the solution is sufficient to characterise the dampening efficiency of an inlet temperature fluctuation by the flow and that a higher level of positive pressure difference is indeed improving the thermal homogeneity in the flow. Moreover, we found that for any given flow, the higher frequency disturbances are dispersed more efficiently than the lower frequency disturbances.

Skin irritation is a key human health endpoint assessed by in vitro and in vivo methods. The OECD TG 404 guideline (in vivo) is based on erythema and oedema translated semi-quantitatively into Draize scores, providing hazard statements for substance classification following EUCLP/UNGHS criteria. Draize scores require quantitation from subjective in vivo observations, to obtain a scoring index, the Primary Irritation Index (PII). However, it is not recognised under REACH due to translating difficulties, notably the cut-off limit for classification and non-inclusion of corrosive effects. Abstract

International audience; An innovative liquid rotational moulding process aiming at using standard injection-moulding polymer grades, shortening cycle times and at accessing more higher-end markets is studied. In this new process, the polymer is melted beforehand in a conventional injection unit and injected into the mould rotating around two axes. This work focus on modelling the liquid polymer flow occurring in this process, as well as providing guidance on the choice of process parameters. First, a stability criterion for rimming flow is derived, defining the process and material parameters space available for a functional process. From this criterion, it appears that initial thickness, and density have a destabilising effect, while liquid viscosity and angular velocity have a stabilising effect. Next, using Lax-Friedrichs scheme, the one-dimensional transient gravity driven liquid film is numerically modelled, linking the total extent of spreading to the frequency of orientation reversals and to the major and minor angular velocities ratio : the closer this ratio to one, the larger the extent of spreading. Then, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out to take into account three-dimensional features in the moulding of a cube part. Finally, comparison with trials performed on the moulding of the same cube part validates entirely this approach. In particular, some peculiar features of spreading can only be explained and reproduced when employing three-dimensional CFD simulations.

Abstract

FLICA4 is a 3D compressible code dedicated to reactor core analysis. FLICA4 solves for two-phase flows in porous media using a compressible drift-flux model [2]. To derive convective fluxes, FLICA4 uses a specific finite volume numerical method based on an extension of the Roe’s approximate Riemann colocated solver [3]. The method is developped to solve 1D flows. It requires adjustments to solve for 2D or 3D flows, at low Mach number, on a cartesian mesh. As Mach number goes to zero, in some extreme 2D or 3D cases, the native method does converge but the solution is not consistent with the analytical or experimental solution [4]. A so-called “pressure correction“ is added to the initial solver to derive an accurate solution. However, this extra term produces checkerboard oscillations in space for most applications of interest, even when solving for 1D flows. These checkerboard oscillations are sometimes critical and may lead to unstable solutions or divergence of the solver. The paper presents the analysis of an alternative numerical algorithm to solve for compressible drift-flux model in the low Mach regime. The current study aims at investigating a new compressible scheme that is both accurate and robust at low Mach number on staggered grids. The actual behavior of the new scheme is tested against simplified nuclear core ”boiling channel” study cases in the low Mach regime. The tests are extended to compressible regime for flows exhibiting both shock waves and no shock waves. The paper shows that the alternative numerical algorithm leads to numerical solutions that are very close to analytical solutions. Moreover, no more checkboard oscillations are generated. Therefore, the algorithm is a real improvement to FLICA4 current numerical method.
