Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction measurements have been performed on polycrystalline Li2Co(WO4)2 samples. Under zero magnetic field, two successive magnetic transitions at TN1 ~ 9.4 K and TN2 ~ 7.4 K are observed. The magnetic ordering temperatures gradually decrease as the magnetic field increases. Neutron diffraction reveals that Li2Co(WO4)2 enters an incommensurate magnetic state with a temperature dependent k between TN1 and TN2. The magnetic propagation vector locks-in to a commensurate value k = (1/2, 1/4, 1/4) below TN2. The antiferromagnetic structure is refined at 1.7 K with Co2+ magnetic moment 2.8(1) uB, consistent with our first-principles calculations.

Hexagonal rare-earth ferrite RFeO$_3$ family represents a unique class of multiferroics exhibiting weak ferromagnetism, and a strong coupling between magnetism and structural trimerization is predicted. However, the hexagonal structure for RFeO$_3$ remains metastable in conventional condition. We have succeeded in stabilizing the hexagonal structure of polycrystalline YbFeO$_3$ by partial Sc substitution of Yb. Using bulk magnetometry and neutron diffraction, we find that Yb$_{0.42}$Sc$_{0.58}$FeO$_3$ orders into a canted antiferromagnetic state with the Neel temperature $T_N$ ~ 165 K, below which the $Fe^{3+}$ moments form the triangular configuration in the $ab$-plane and their in-plane projections are parallel to the [100] axis, consistent with magnetic space group $P$6$_{3}$$c'm'$. It is determined that the spin-canting is aligned along the $c$-axis, giving rise to the weak ferromagnetism. Furthermore, the $Fe^{3+}$ moments reorient toward a new direction below reorientation temperature $T_R$ ~ 40 K, satisfying magnetic subgroup $P$6$_{3}$, while the $Yb^{3+}$ moments order independently and ferrimagnetically along the $c$-axis at the characteristic temperature $T_{Yb}$ ~ 15 K. Interestingly, reproducible modulation of electric polarization induced by magnetic field at low temperature is achieved, suggesting that the delicate structural distortion associated with two-up/one-down buckling of the Yb/Sc-planes and tilting of the FeO$_5$ bipyramids may mediate the coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic orders under magnetic field. The present work represents a substantial progress to search for high-temperature multiferroics in hexagonal ferrites and related materials.

We report the magnitude of the induced magnetic moment in CVD-grown epitaxial and rotated-domain graphene in proximity with a ferromagnetic Ni film, using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The XMCD spectra at the C K-edge confirms the presence of a magnetic signal in the graphene layer and the sum rules give a magnetic moment of up to $\sim\,0.47\,\mu$_B/C atom induced in the graphene layer. For a more precise estimation, we conducted PNR measurements. The PNR results indicate an induced magnetic moment of $\sim$ 0.53 $\mu$_B/C atom at 10 K for rotated graphene and $\sim$ 0.38 $\mu$_B/C atom at 10 K for epitaxial graphene. Additional PNR measurements on graphene grown on a non-magnetic Ni_9Mo_1 substrate, where no magnetic moment in graphene is measured, suggest that the origin of the induced magnetic moment is due to the opening of the graphene's Dirac cone as a result of the strong C pz-3d hybridization., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

The magnetic properties of the spin-5/2 double molybdate LiFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$ have been characterized by heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron powder diffraction techniques. Unlike the multiferroic system LiFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$ which exhibits two successive magnetic transitions, LiFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$ undergoes only one antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N$ ~ 23.8 K. Its antiferromagnetic magnetic structure with the commensurate propagation vector k = (0, 0.5, 0) has been determined. Electrical control of magnetism is a long-standing goal in physics and technology, recently developed electrolyte gating techniques providing a promising route to realization. Validating a recent theoretical prediction, here we demonstrate large enhancement of electrostatic modulation of ferromagnetic order in ion-gel-gated ultrathin La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_{3-\delta}$ by thickness-tuning to the brink of a magnetic percolation transition. Application of only 3-4 V then drives a transition from a short-range-ordered insulator to a robust long-range ferromagnetic metal, realizing giant electrostatic Curie temperature modulation over a 150 K window. In operando polarized neutron reflectometry confirms gate-controlled ferromagnetism, also demonstrating unusually deep penetration of induced magnetization, in further agreement with theory., Comment: 3 figures

Chemically ordered B2 FeRh exhibits a remarkable antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition that is first order. It thus shows phase coexistence, usually by proceeding though nucleation at random defect sites followed by propagation of phase boundary domain walls. The transition occurs at a temperature that can be varied by doping other metals onto the Rh site. We have taken advantage of this to yield control over the transition process by preparing an epilayer with oppositely directed doping gradients of Pd and Ir throughout its height, yielding a gradual transition that occurs between 350~K and 500~K. As the sample is heated, a horizontal antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase boundary domain wall moves gradually up through the layer, its position controlled by the temperature. This mobile magnetic domain wall affects the magnetisation and resistivity of the layer in a way that can be controlled, and hence exploited, for novel device applications., Comment: submitted to APL Materials

Using X-ray photoelectron emission microscopy we have observed the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases in a (3 at.%)Pd-doped FeRh epilayer. By quantitatively analyzing the resultant images we observe that as the epilayer transforms there is a change in magnetic domain symmetry from predominantly twofold at lower temperatures through to an equally weighted combination of both four and twofold symmetries at higher temperature. It is postulated that the lowered symmetry Ising-like nematic phase resides at the near-surface of the epilayer. This behavior is different to that of undoped FeRh suggesting that the variation in symmetry is driven by the competing structural and electronic interactions in the nanoscale FeRh film coupled with the effect of the chemical doping disorder., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

We have studied how the magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient EuO sputtered thin films vary as a function of thickness. The magnetic moment, measured by polarized neutron reflectometry, and the Curie temperature are found to decrease with reducing thickness. Our results indicate that the reduced number of nearest neighbors, band bending and the partial depopulation of the electronic states that carry the spins associated with the 4f orbitals of Eu are all contributing factors in the surface-induced change of the magnetic properties of EuO$_{1-x}$., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We report and discuss the first neutron reflection measurements from the free surface of normal and superfluid 4He and of liquid 3He-4He mixture. In case of liquid 4He the surface roughness is different above and below the lambda transition, being smoother in the superfluid state. For the superfluid, we also observe the formation of a surface layer ~200 A thick which has a subtly different neutron scattering cross-section. The results can be interpreted as an enhancement of Bose-Einstein condensate fraction close to the helium surface. We find that the addition of 3He isotopic impurities leads to the formation of Andreev levels at low temperatures., Comment: LT25

The reflection of neutrons from a helium surface has been observed for the first time. The 4He surface is smoother in the superfluid state at 1.54 K than in the case of the normal liquid at 2.3 K. In the superfluid state we also observe a surface layer ~200 Angstroms thick which has a subtly different neutron scattering cross-section, which may be explained by an enhanced Bose-Einstein condensate fraction close to the helium surface., Comment: to be published in Low Temperature Physics

Polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) provides evidence that nonlocal electrodynamics governs the magnetic field penetration in an extreme low-k superconductor. The sample is an indium film with a large elastic mean free path (11 mkm) deposited on a silicon oxide wafer. It is shown that PNR can resolve the difference between the reflected neutron spin asymmetries predicted by the local and nonlocal theories of superconductivity.
