The unprecedented rate of climate change and over-exploitation of resources has had a significant impact on ecosystems around the globe. In particular, the oceanic realm has encountered multiple changes to ecosystem conditions, food web dynamics and habitat constructs. Many marine species have been driven to shift their geographical range in reaction to reaching their physiological limits causing severe metabolic stress. This includes key fishery targets, such as pelagic and carnivorous fish, that supply many nations with their primary or secondary protein source. The shift also spurs an array of political and economic consequences due to the need for fisheries to follow or target different fish stocks that are no longer in their exclusive economic zone or legal fishing waters. For this reason, and many other logistical and financial reasons, management strategies have struggled to maintain and sustain fish stocks around the globe. This paper will look at a Northeast Atlantic mackerel case study, compare and analyse the implications of shifting fish stocks, and illustrate difficulties related to managing the fisheries which target these stocks. Furthermore, we highlight the need for a combination of global strategies, and smaller-scale ecosystem approaches in fisheries management to be able to sufficiently sustain fisheries and thus future food security, during a time of climatic change.

In building public support for social change, activists in communities of color routinely approach broader audiences via news media. Communities of color, however, routinely face disparities that limit their access to media including local news media outlets. This lack of access mirrors inequalities in political, social, and economic arenas and can slow public awareness campaigns to address disparities in health, environmental, and other quality-of-life issues. I describe two community-based collaborative action research studies that documented and challenged how local television newscasts underrepresented and misrepresented three communities of color in Boston. The linkage between communication rights and campaigns to address quality-of-life issues is presented, as well as unresolved challenges in the collaborative research process. The study has implications for environmental health campaigns.

We argue that by conducting systematic research with communities rather than on communities, community-based research (CBR) methods can both advance the study of human interaction and strengthen public understanding and appreciation of social sciences. CBR, among other methods, can also address social scientists’ ethical and social commitments. We recap the history of calls by leading sociologists for rigorous, empirical, community-engaged research. We introduce CBR methods as empirically grounded methods for conducting social research with social actors. We define terms and describe the range of methods that we include in the umbrella term, “community-based research.” After providing exemplars of community-based research, we review CBR’s advantages and challenges. We, next, summarize an intervention that we undertook as members of the Publication Committee of the URBAN Research Network’s Sociology section in which the committee developed and disseminated guidelines for peer review of community-based research. We also share initial responses from journal editors. In the conclusion, we revisit the potential of community-based research and note the consequences of neglecting community-based research traditions.

Despite their documented successes, permanent supportive housing programs have not received adequate funding at federal or state levels. Building public will to fund permanent supportive housing, therefore, becomes the order of the day. Drawing on the work of the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless (RICH), the authors describe how RICH, housing advocates, activists representing the homeless and formerly homeless, and other allies forged an inclusive, multiconstituency network. This coalition went on to reverse state cuts in the highly effective Neighborhood Opportunities Program, which had built more than 1,000 units of well-received affordable housing including permanent supportive housing units.

In this article, we provide an overview of School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS), an approach to building protective school cultures and preventing the development of problem behavior through instruction, environmental redesign, and attention to systems-level variables. We define the critical features of SWPBS within a prevention science lens, including identification of its conceptual foundations, proximal mediators of student outcomes, and current research base and goals. Given its evidence of effectiveness, we describe efforts and a research agenda in the area of sustainability of SWPBS, including a description of a proposed model of sustainability and a case study of statewide implementation with steps taken to promote sustained implementation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa encodes an enzyme (PA2794) that is annotated as a sialidase (or neuraminidase), as it possesses three bacterial neuraminidase repeats that are a signature of nonviral sialidases. A recent report showed that when the gene encoding this sialidase is knocked out, this led to a reduction in biofilm production in the lungs of mice, and it was suggested that the enzyme recognizes pseudaminic acid, a sialic acid analogue that decorates the flagella of Pseudomonas, Helicobacter, and Campylobacter species. Here, we present the crystal structure of the P. aeruginosa enzyme and show that it adopts a trimeric structure, partly held together by an immunoglobulin-like trimerization domain that is C-terminal to a classical beta-propeller sialidase domain. The recombinant enzyme does not show any sialidase activity with the standard fluorogenic sialic-acid-based substrate. The proposed active site contains certain conserved features of a sialidase: a nucleophilic tyrosine with its associated glutamic acid, and two of the usual three arginines that interact with the carboxylic acid group of the substrate, but is missing the first arginine and the aspartic acid that acts as an acid/base in all sialidases studied to date. We show, by in silico docking, that the active site may accommodate pseudaminic acid but not sialic acid and that this is due, in part, to a phenylalanine in the hydrophobic pocket that selects for the alternative stereochemistry of pseudaminic acid at C5 compared to sialic acid. Mutation of this phenylalanine to an alanine converts the enzyme into a sialidase, albeit a poor one, which we confirm by kinetics and NMR, and this allowed us to probe the function of other amino acids. We propose that a histidine plays the role of the acid/base, whose state is altered through a charge-relay system involving a novel His-Tyr-Glu triad. The location of this relay system precludes the presence of one of the three arginines usually found in a sialidase active site.

Social movement scholars have suggested that opportunity structures are not objective features of the world but must be constructed by social forces, including social movements. Here, we attempt to analyze how Palestinians living in the occupied territories constructed political opportunity during the run-up to the 1987 first Intifada. We analyze how the changing Israeli political opportunity structure affected Palestinians’ framing of the structural conditions they faced. In particular, we examine (1) how the consolidating Palestinian movement within the occupied territories built the capacity for a shared, collective framing of events, and (2) how the movement adapted a strategy based on its understanding of the opportunity presented by divisions in Israeli society concerning the occupation. Based on the analysis, we offer several insights into the Intifada's dynamics and trajectories.

Stressing relation-building and participatory communication approaches, the Rhode Island Coalition against Domestic Violence worked with journalists to develop a best practices handbook on news coverage of domestic violence murders. This study compares print coverage of domestic violence murders prehandbook (1996-1999) and posthandbook (2000-2002). Significant changes include increased labeling of the murder of intimates as domestic violence and doubled usage of advocates as sources. As a result, domestic violence murders, previously framed as unpredictable private tragedies, are more commonly framed posthandbook as social problems warranting public intervention. The authors conclude that relation-building approaches can affect news cultures and public discourse when conducted in conjunction with comprehensive participatory communications strategies.

Activists cannot build political power simply by framing their message in ways that resonate with broader cultural values. To succeed, framing strategies must be integrated with broader movement-building efforts.

We track the strategic choices of Rhode Island Coalition against Domestic Violence (RICADV), a statewide collective actor working in one media market to expand opportunities to promote its mission. We reconstruct an organizational life history describing how RICADV built its communications capacity and deepened internal and external relations, thereby increasing media standing with Rhode Island journalists. To measure growth in media standing quantitatively, we analyze print coverage of three comparable clusters of domestic violence murders occurring in Rhode Island between 1996 and 2002. Over this interval, RICADV rose from invisibility to become Rhode Island reporters' foremost source for background information on domestic-violence murders. Also, the use of language identifying these murders as domestic violence increased sixteen-fold. Stressing dialogic and relational approaches, we conclude that despite restricted access to corporatized media markets, intentional collective actors can negotiate and expand media opportunities by strategically selecting mission-relevant media projects that match their existing resources and networks.

Modern market-driven mass media systems may present collective actors with communication opportunities, but these come laced with formidable costs and constraints. This paper argues that despite these barriers, collective actors, working intentionally and strategically, can develop effective media campaigns to communicate with mass audiences — audiences they cannot reach directly. To utilize these narrow opportunities, however, a collective actor needs both adequate communications infrastructure and a communication strategy well integrated into its overall organizing strategy. The 1997 Teamsters strike against United Parcel Service (U.P.S.) provides an illustrative case.

This symposium brings together the theory and practice of public sociology. The introduction sets out the meanings of public sociology, emphasizing its plurality and its relation to multiple publics. From there, it frames public sociology in relation to policy, professional, and critical sociologies. This constellation of the division of sociological labor varies over time and between countries. We argue for a normative model of antagonistic interdependence, which holds all four types in equilibrium. The core of the symposium contains six autobiographical case studies of the practice of public sociology, all from Boston College. In different ways, each case study responds to the issues raised in the introduction. The conclusion to the symposium is a manifesto for public sociologies, setting out the implications of the case studies for sociology's relation to society.

The concept of framing applied to the interaction between social movements and the news media, including local television news, is evident in the experience of the Media Research and Action Project (MRAP). MRAP employs frame analysis to assist social movement and community groups in advancing their goals through the news media. The paper presents the important lessons derived from the applied work of MRAF

This essay examines the efforts of the Media Research and Action Project to assist marginalized groups in employing news as a political resource. The analysis highlights the news media as critical arenas of struggle for social movements and community groups seeking political change and social justice. The essay details how the Media Research and Action Project, influenced by resource mobilization theory and multiple research perspectives on news, assists community groups and social movements in their ability to: identify and challenge barriers to news media access; sharpen their preferred frames and strategies for promoting their definitions of political issues through the news media; and develop media initiatives integrated into their political strategies. A case involving a media‐centered public information campaign to influence policy formation and public attitudes concerning workplace reproductive rights is highlighted.

Last summer, in the week between school's end and day camp, my six‐year old daughter and I were doing errands together. I was trying to enjoy her rather than obsess about work not done. As we sauntered out of the post office, a man in his sixties passed us and said pleasantly enough, “Another day out of work?” “Yes,” I said with resignation. He then started screaming at me, “You're a bunch of bums! Look at me. I'm old enough to retire and I still have to work. Who do you think you women are? Get a job!”.

Alpha 1 antitrypsin (A1A) is a 52 kD glycoprotein that is mainly synthesized in the liver. As a major protease inhibitor, it binds to and neutralizes neutrophil elastase, thereby limiting the damage to the normal tissues after an inflammatory response. A deficiency in A1A leads to end-stage liver disease, both in children and in adults. In addition, the deficiency also has a detrimental effect in the lungs of the adult population. Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency is corrected with hepatic replacement; however, the changes in pulmonary functions have not been studied before and after liver transplant. The purpose of this study was to observe the changes in the pulmonary functions of patients who underwent liver transplant for the treatment of A1A deficiency.Nine patients underwent liver transplant for A1A deficiency. Seven patients (5 men, 2 women; mean age, 49.95 -/+ 7.09 years) had their pulmonary function tests available before the liver transplant (mean, 5.6 -/+ 3.4; range, 0.9-10.1 months) and after the liver transplant (mean, 30.3 -/+ 18.4, range 7.8-48.1 months) for analysis.The mean, preliver, transplant, FEV1 was 2.69 -/+ 0.9 L, which was nearly unchanged after the liver transplant to a mean of 2.7 -/+ 1.2 L. During the mean total interval of nearly 3 years, an estimated decline of 250 mL in FEV1 was expected.It appears from the results of our study that liver transplant probably prevented the progression of pulmonary disease in A1A-deficient patients. Further study and close, postliver, transplant follow-up is warranted to support our initial findings.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has regulated ethylene oxide (EtO) on the basis of its acute toxicity and its potential carcinogenic and reproductive effects since 1971. OSHA's 1984 EtO standard and its 1988 revisions focused new attention on health and safety training and other preventive measures. An EtO health and safety training program for hospital sterilization workers was developed by the staff of an independent occupational and environmental health clinic. Participatory and empowerment training methods were central to the approach. Also included were hands-on, demonstration, interactive presentation, and other methods. An EtO Health and Safety Training Manual was developed based on the training experiences. This paper presents the challenges, benefits, and limitations of incorporating participatory and empowerment approaches in the design, implementation, and evaluation of EtO health and safety training.

Traditionally, patients who die with a malignancy have been excluded from donation. However, it has become a common practice to accept organs from donors that have low-grade tumors or tumors with low metastatic potential. The aim of this study was to analyze our experience with the use of liver grafts from donors with central nervous system (CNS) tumors. A retrospective review of 1173 liver transplants performed between 1992 and 2006 identified 42 donors diagnosed with a CNS tumor. Thirty-two tumors were malignant, and 10 tumors were benign. Forty-two liver transplant recipients received livers from these donors. All patients were followed until May 2007 with a mean follow-up of 29 +/- 17 months. Among 42 donors, there were 28 males and 14 females. The mean donor risk index was 1.78 +/- 0.39. Twenty (47.6%) of the CNS tumors were glioblastoma multiforme (astrocytoma grade IV), 11 (26.2%) were other astrocytomas, and 1 (2.4%) was an anaplastic ependymoma. Twenty (62.5%) neoplasms were grade IV tumors, 8 (25%) were grade II tumors, and 4 (12.5%) were grade III tumors. Over 80% of the patients had at least 1 kind of invasive procedure violating the blood-brain barrier. The rate of recurrence for the entire group was 2.4% (all CNS tumors). There were 7 (7.2%) deaths in all. The most common cause of death was sepsis (n = 3, 7.2%). There was no difference in survival between recipients of grafts from donors with CNS tumors and recipients of grafts from donors without CNS tumors (1 year: 82% versus 83.3%, P = not significant; 3 years: 77.4% versus 72%, P = not significant). In conclusion, in our experience, despite violation of the blood-brain barrier and high-grade CNS tumors, recurrence was uncommon. Grafts from these donors are often an overlooked source of high-quality organs from younger donors and can be appropriately used, particularly in patients who, despite low Model for End-Stage Liver Disease scores, carry a high risk of mortality.

Viruses of the Paramyxoviridae family are the leading cause of respiratory disease in children. The human parainfluenza viruses (hPIV) are members of the Paramyxovirinae subfamily, which also includes mumps virus, Newcastle disease virus (NDV), Sendai virus (SV) and simian type 5 virus (SV5). On the surface of these viruses is the glycoprotein hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN), which is responsible for cell attachment, promotion of fusion and release of progeny virions. This multifunctional nature of HN makes it an attractive target for the development of inhibitors as a treatment for childhood respiratory diseases. Here we report the crystal structure of NDV HN in complex with a derivative of 2-deoxy-2,3-dehydro-N-acetylneuraminic acid, Neu5Ac2en, that has a functional group designed to occupy a large conserved binding pocket around the active site. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a bulky hydrophobic group at the O4 position of Neu5Ac2en, given the hydrophobic nature of the binding pocket. This derivative, with a benzyl group added to the O4 position of Neu5Ac2en, has an IC(50) of approximately 10 microM in a neuraminidase assay against hPIV3 HN. The IC(50) value of the parent compound, Neu5Ac2en, in the same assay is approximately 25 microM. These results highlight the striking difference between the influenza neuraminidase and paramyxovirus HN active sites, and provide a platform for the development of improved HN inhibitors.

Although originally developed for primary care, nurse prescribing is being extended to hospitals. A range of developments has made it increasingly relevant to hospital-based nurses, and it should enable them to provide more effective care. However, nurses must be aware of a number of professional issues to ensure prescribing is extended for the benefit of patients rather than other professionals, and that it promotes holistic patient care.

General aspects of differential-reinforcement-of-other-behavior (DRO) schedules are discussed, and nineteen studies that involved therapeutic applications of such schedules are evaluated along several dimensions. The majority of studies employed retarded children as subjects and successfully reduced some form of aggressive, disruptive, or self-injurious behavior. Tokens and food were the consequences most commonly delivered; these and other stimuli were presented contingent on periods of nonresponding that ranged at maximum across studies from five seconds to eight hours. Nearly half of the rated studies used DRO in conjunction with another response-suppressing operation, while an equal number compared two or more response-deceleration procedures. Only two studies reported data on behaviors other than those actually consequated under the DRO. Overall, the data evaluated indicate that DRO schedules can be a viable technique for reducing undesired behaviors, although the range of conditions under which these schedules have been employed is rather limited, and some confusion apparently exists concerning their operational characteristics.

Radiolabeled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) containing up to three rings, including naphthalene, methylnaphthalenes, and phenanthrene, were degraded (measured by 14CO2 production) in water samples from both Narragansett Bay and southeastern United States. Higher weight PAH, including benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, fluorene, and anthracene, showed little, if any, degradation in water but were readily degraded when added to sediment–water slurries. In areas with low levels of petroleum in the water or sediment there was a lag before appreciable degradation began, and the rate of degradation fitted a first-order equation. Half-lives, calculated for the various PAH added to water or sediment–water slurries, were very low during winter months; [14C]methylnaphthalene added to water from Skidaway River, Georgia, in January (8 °C) was 57 d, while in September (28 °C) it was 3 d. PAH added to sediments or water from oil-treated areas or mesocosms were rapidly degraded with no lag phase and the degradation rate was linear. [14C]Methylnaphthalene added to water from control and oiled mesocosms in May (10 °C) had half-lives of 300 and 5 d, respectively. We plotted the changes in turnover times with changes in the concentration of PAH and calculated the natural turnover times and Vmax for PAH added to water or sediment from the oiled mesocosms. When [14C]dimethylbenz[a]anthracene was incubated in water in the dark no degradation occurred, but when exposed to sunlight, 0.3% was mineralized in 18 h. In addition, a variety of photooxidation products were produced. The production of 14CO2 in the light was due to microbial degradation of photooxidation products of [14C]dimethylbenz[a]anthracene.
