Abstract

The Agulhas Current (AC) transport of heat and salt from the Indian Ocean into the South Atlantic around South Africa (Agulhas leakage), has a profound role in the decadal variability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), which influences global climate. On glacial-interglacial timescales, paleostudies postulate that Agulhas leakage plays a decisive role for AMOC resumption during terminations (glacial-interglacial transitions). However, efforts to elucidate forcing mechanisms connecting Agulhas leakage with glacial-interglacial AMOC variability have been hampered due to a lack of climate records extracted from the area where the AC originates. Here we present 800-kyr sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS) records from the "precursor" region of the AC. These records contain strong obliquity-driven 41-kyr cycles, nearly in phase with changes in annual mean insolation and air temperature at high southern latitudes. In contrast, precession-driven cycles were negligible in our SST records, which is surprising given the low-latitude location of the Agulhas leakage. Together, this suggests that long-term Agulhas leakage dynamics are associated with a high latitude rather than a tropical climate forcing mechanism, probably by varying the position of the Southern Hemisphere subtropical convergence (STC) and its associated westerlies. We argue that during terminations stronger Agulhas leakage was triggered by increased obliquity exerting a positive feedback on the global climate system through modulating long-term AMOC variations. Abstract

International audience; ObjectivesPost-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) care remains a challenge for individuals with potential sexual exposure to HIV in terms of PEP completion and ongoing risk behaviours.MethodsA retrospective analysis was carried out on data from the French Dat’AIDS prevention cohort (NCT03795376) for individuals evaluated for PEP between 2004 and 2017. A multivariable analysis was performed of predictors of both PEP completion and condom use [odds ratios (ORs)] and their associated probabilities (P, with P > 95% being clinically relevant).ResultsOverall, 29 060 sexual exposures to HIV were evaluated for PEP [36% in men who have sex with men (MSM) and 64% in heterosexuals]. Overall, 12 different PEP regimens were offered in 19 240 cases (46%). Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)/emtricitabine (FTC) was the preferred backbone (n = 14 304; 74%). We observed a shift from boosted protease inhibitor-based regimens to nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor- or integrase inhibitor-based regimens in recent years. Overall, 20% of PEP prescriptions were prematurely discontinued. Older age, MSM, intercourse with a sex worker, rape and intercourse with a known HIV-infected source patient were factors associated with increased rates of PEP completion (OR > 1; P > 98%). None of the 12 PEP regimens was associated with premature discontinuation. We also found 12 774 cases of unprotected sexual intercourse (48%). Condom use decreased (OR < 1; P > 99%) with the year of exposure, and was lower in MSM and rape victims. Condom use increased (OR > 1, P > 99%) with age, and was higher in those who had intercourse with a sex worker or with a female partner and in those with knowledge of the partner’s HIV status.ConclusionsWe provide new insights into how rates of condom use and PEP completion might be improved in those receiving PEP by targeting certain groups of individuals for interventions. In particular, youth and MSM at risk should be linked in a prevention-to-care continuum.

19. A two-million-year-long hydroclimatic context for hominin evolution in southeastern Africa.

Abstract

The past two million years of eastern African climate variability is currently poorly constrained, despite interest in understanding its assumed role in early human evolution 1-4 . Rare palaeoclimate records from northeastern Africa suggest progressively drier conditions 2,5 or a stable hydroclimate 6 . By contrast, records from Lake Malawi in tropical southeastern Africa reveal a trend of a progressively wetter climate over the past 1.3 million years 7,8 . The climatic forcings that controlled these past hydrological changes are also a matter of debate. Some studies suggest a dominant local insolation forcing on hydrological changes 9-11 , whereas others infer a potential influence of sea surface temperature changes in the Indian Ocean 8,12,13 . Here we show that the hydroclimate in southeastern Africa (20-25° S) is controlled by interplay between low-latitude insolation forcing (precession and eccentricity) and changes in ice volume at high latitudes. Our results are based on a multiple-proxy reconstruction of hydrological changes in the Limpopo River catchment, combined with a reconstruction of sea surface temperature in the southwestern Indian Ocean for the past 2.14 million years. We find a long-term aridification in the Limpopo catchment between around 1 and 0.6 million years ago, opposite to the hydroclimatic evolution suggested by records from Lake Malawi. Our results, together with evidence of wetting at Lake Malawi, imply that the rainbelt contracted toward the Equator in response to increased ice volume at high latitudes. By reducing the extent of woodland or wetlands in terrestrial ecosystems, the observed changes in the hydroclimate of southeastern Africa-both in terms of its long-term state and marked precessional variability-could have had a role in the evolution of early hominins, particularly in the extinction of Paranthropus robustus.

Abstract

Primary consumers play a key role in coastal ecosystems by transferring organic matter from primary producers to predators. Among them, suspension-feeders, like bivalve molluscs are widely used in trophic web studies. The main goal of this study was to investigate variations of C and N elemental and isotopic ratios in common bivalves (M. edulis, M. galloprovincialis, and C. gigas) at large spatial (i.e. among three coastal regions) and different temporal (i.e. from seasonal to multi-decadal) scales in France, in order to identify potential general or specific patterns and speculate on their drivers. The observed spatial variability was related to the trophic status of the coastal regions (oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea versus meso- to eutrophic English Channel and Atlantic ocean), but not to ecosystem typology (estuaries, versus lagoons versus bays versus littoral systems). Furthermore, it highlighted local specificities in terms of the origin of the POM assimilated by bivalves (e.g., mainly continental POM vs. marine phytoplankton vs. microphytobenthic algae). Likewise, seasonal variability was related both to the reproduction cycle for C/N ratios of Mytilus spp. and to changes in trophic resources for δ 13 C of species located close to river mouth. Multi-decadal evolution exhibited shifts and trends for part of the 30-year series with decreases in δ 13 C and δ 15 N. Abstract

The aim of this investigation was to study the presence and the characteristics of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) in ears with ventilation tubes. Theoretically the small mass and the opening of the tube could influence the OAE. We studied a population of children between the age of 3 and 9 years with functional ventilation tubes and a normal hearing on pure tone audiometry (Fletcher index < 25 dB). A total of 110 ears from 62 children were included. According to the criterion of 70% wave reproducibility, TEOAE were present in 86.7% of the ears. Looking at the reproducibility in the different frequency bands of the response, it was found that the TEOAE were strongest in the 2 kHz frequency band. It is concluded that the measurement of TEOAE can be used as a useful hearing test in young children with ventilation tubes, maybe even when pure tone audiometry is not yet possible. However, false negative results were found in about one tenth of the ears.
