Abstract

Magnetic medical imaging (MRI) is commonly used to 3D rendering of musculoskeletal structures. However, due to technical limitations of the device e.g. the coil, high-spacial resolution is available only for a small field of view. However in the case of hand and forearm investigation, and due to the long tendon and small bones, both high special and a large field of view are required. It is the aim of this study to propose the in silico enlargement of the field of view to 3D visualise all hand's bones and tendons paths. Using MRI clinical routine sequence, we detailed a procedure of hand immobilisation by alginate and registration of up to four consecutive MRI volume acquisitions. In order to validate our method, we evaluated the accuracy of the anatomical structures segmentation (i), the robustness of the registration by a sensitivity analysis (ii) and the accuracy of the 3D reconstruction by comparison with computer tomography imaging (iii). The results demonstrated a mean error of 1 mm on the 3D external surface and of 0.94 mm on the localisation of the hand bones. We also tested different hand sizes and showed that the field of view could be increased up to 2.3 time compared to the original one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Implanté depuis cinquante ans en Polynésie française, l'Institut de recherche pour le développement a souhaité restituer les principaux programmes scientifiques menés dans ce pays. L'ambition de cet ouvrage est de permettre à chacun de s'approprier un état des connaissances produites localement : de l'archéologie à la génétique, les sciences mobilisées sont nombreuses mais notre entrée est avant tout celle des questions de société, d'environnement et de santé... Abstract

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), based on shear wave propagation generated by a specific driver, is a non-invasive exam performed in clinical practice to improve the liver diagnosis. The purpose was to develop a finite element (FE) identification method for the mechanical characterisation of phantom mimicking soft tissues investigated with MRE technique. Thus, a 3D FE phantom model, composed of the realistic MRE liver boundary conditions, was developed to simulate the shear wave propagation with the software ABAQUS. The assumptions of homogeneity and elasticity were applied to the FE phantom model. Different ranges of mesh size, density and Poisson's ratio were tested in order to develop the most representative FE phantom model. The simulated wave displacement was visualised with a dynamic implicit analysis. Subsequently, an identification process was performed with a cost function and an optimisation loop provided the optimal elastic properties of the phantom. The present identification process was validated on a phantom model, and the perspective will be to apply this method on abdominal tissues for the set-up of new clinical MRE protocols that could be applied for the follow-up of the effects of treatments. 40. A robust protocol for the creation of patient-specific finite element models of the musculoskeletal system from medical imaging data

Abstract

A robust, accurate and flexible computational protocol to create personalised finite element models of musculoskeletal systems from medical images is presented. A contour-based geometrical reconstruction well suited to the complex and intrinsic character of living biological tissues and structures is used. The 3D surface model is decomposed into a number of stripes considered as quasi-developable domains which can be, therefore, meshed in a 2D parametric space. Once all boundary domains have been meshed, nodes are projected on a Hermite bicubic patch model derived from the segmentation points. A specific procedure to handle branching structures is proposed. In a final step, a tetrahedron mesh is generated and the mechanical properties could be assigned. Case studies using magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography data are carried out and demonstrated. Results of the protocol are presented and discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a viscoelastic database for muscles (VM: vastus medialis and Sr: sartorius) and subcutaneous adipose tissue with multifrequency magnetic resonance elastography (MMRE) coupled with rheological models. MMRE was performed on 13 subjects, at 70-90-110 Hz, to experimentally assess the elastic properties (μ) of passive and active (20% MVC) muscles. Then, numerical shear modulus (μ) and viscosity (η) were calculated using three rheological models (Voigt, Zener, Springpot). The elastic properties, obtained with the Springpot model, were closer to the experimental data for the different physiological tissues (μSpringpot_VM_Passive = 3.67 ± 0.71 kPa, μSpringpot_Sr = 6.89 ± 1.27 kPa, μSpringpot_Adipose Tissue = 1.61 ± 0.37 kPa) and at different muscle states (μSpringpot_VM_20%MVC = 11.29 ± 1.04 kPa). The viscosity parameter increased with the level of contraction (η_VM_ = 4.5 ± 1.64 versus η_VM_20% = 12.14 ± 1.47 ) and varied with the type of muscle. (η_VM_ = 4.5 ± 1.64 versus η_Sr_Springpot = 6.63 ± 1.27 Pa.s). Similar viscosities were calculated for all tissues and rheological models. These first physiologically realistic viscoelastic parameters could be used by the physicians to better identify and monitor the effects of muscle disorder, and as a database for musculoskeletal model. Bien souvent fruit des financements de l'Etat et du Territoire, la plupart du temps menés en partenariat avec l'université de Polynésie et les autres organismes, ces programmes concernant différents domaines scientifiques. De l'archéologie à la génétique, les sciences mobilisées sont nombreuses mais notre entrée est avant tout celle des questions de société, d'environnement et de santé... L'ambition de cet ouvrage est de permettre à chacun de s'approprier un état des connaissances produites localement. Au-delà, notre perspective, très collective, est de nourrir les relations entre la science et la société, et de fournir des éléments de réponse à la récurrente question, « quelles recherches pour le développement de la Polynésie française et ses habitants ? »
