The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument is a major component of NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft. Since beginning normal science operations on 1 May 2010, HMI has operated with remarkable continuity, e.g. during the more than five years of the SDO prime mission that ended 30 September 2015, HMI collected 98.4% of all possible 45-second velocity maps; minimizing gaps in these full-disk Dopplergrams is crucial for helioseismology. HMI velocity, intensity, and magnetic-field measurements are used in numerous investigations, so understanding the quality of the data is important. We describe the calibration measurements used to track HMI performance and detail trends in important instrument parameters during the mission. Regular calibration sequences provide information used to improve and update the HMI data calibration. The set-point temperature of the instrument front window and optical bench is adjusted regularly to maintain instrument focus, and changes in the temperature-control scheme have been made to improve stability in the observable quantities. The exposure time has been changed to compensate for a 15% decrease in instrument throughput. Measurements of the performance of the shutter and tuning mechanisms show that they are aging as expected and continue to perform according to specification. Parameters of the tunable-optical-filter elements are regularly adjusted to account for drifts in the central wavelength. Frequent measurements of changing CCD-camera characteristics, such as gain and flat field, are used to calibrate the observations. Infrequent expected events, such as eclipses, transits, and spacecraft off-points, interrupt regular instrument operations and provide the opportunity to perform additional calibration. Onboard instrument anomalies are rare and seem to occur quite uniformly in time. The instrument continues to perform very well., Comment: 50 pages, 18 figures, 20 tables

Ring-diagram analysis is a helioseismic tool useful for studying the near-surface layers of the Sun. It has been employed to study near-surface shear, meridional circulation, flows around sunspots, and thermal structure beneath active regions. We review recent results obtained using ring-diagram analysis, state some of the more important outstanding difficulties in the technique, and point out several extensions to the technique that are just now beginning to bear fruit.

We employ ring-diagram analysis to study the sub-surface thermal structure of active regions. We present results using a large number of active regions over the course of Solar Cycle 23. We present both traditional inversions of ring-diagram frequency differences, with a total sample size of 264, and a statistical study using Principal Component Analysis. We confirm earlier results on smaller samples that sound speed and adiabatic index are changed below regions of strong magnetic field. We find that sound speed is decreased in the region between approximately r=0.99R_sun and r=0.995R_sun (depths of 3Mm to 7Mm), and increased in the region between r=0.97R_sun and r=0.985R_sun (depths of 11Mm to 21Mm). The adiabatic index is enhanced in the same deeper layers that sound-speed enhancement is seen. A weak decrease in adiabatic index is seen in the shallower layers in many active regions. We find that the magnitudes of these perturbations depend on the strength of the surface magnetic field, but we find a great deal of scatter in this relation, implying other factors may be relevant., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Solar Physics

Measuring the internal solar magnetic fields and how they change over the course of a solar cycle is one of the key aims of helioseismology. We present the results of attempts to model the global mode splitting coefficients over solar cycle 23, assuming that the frequency splitting is only due to rotation and a large-scale magnetic field. The first results using only the a2 coefficients show that the data are best fit by a combination of a poloidal field and a double-peaked near-surface toroidal field. The toroidal fields are centered at r0 = 0.999 R⊙ and r0 = 0.996 R⊙ and are confined to the near-surface layers. The poloidal field is a dipole field. The peak strength of the poloidal field is 124 ± 17 G. The toroidal field peaks at 380 ± 30 G and 1.4 ± 0.2 kG for the shallower and deeper fields, respectively. The field strengths are highly correlated with surface activity. We also examine the differences between the minima at the beginning and the end of solar cycle 23 (© 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Manifestations of the solar magnetic activity through periodicities of about 11 and 2 years are now clearly seen in all solar activity indices.In this paper, we add information about the mechanism driving the 2 year period by studying the time and latitudinal properties of acoustic modes that are sensitive probes of the subsurface layers. We use almost 17 years of high quality resolved data provided by the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) to investigate the solar cycle changes in p-mode frequencies for spherical degrees l from 0 to 120 and 1.6 mHz < nu < 3.5 mHz. For both periodic components of solar activity, we locate the origin of the frequency shift in the subsurface layers and put in evidence for a sudden enhancement in amplitude just in the last few hundred kilometers. We also show that, in both cases, the size of the shift increases towards equatorial latitudes and from minimum to maximum of solar activity, but, in agreement with previous findings,the quasi-biennial periodicity (QBP) causes a weaker shift in mode frequencies and a slower enhancement than the one caused by the 11 year cycle. We compare our observational findings with the features predicted by different models that try to explain the origin of this QBP and conclude that the observed propertiescould result from the beating between a dipole and quadrupole magnetic configuration of the dynamo., Submitted to ApJ, 11 pages, 5 figures

Many helioseismic measurements suffer from substantial systematic errors. A particularly frustrating one is that time-distance measurements suffer from a large center to limb effect which looks very similar to the finite light travel time, except that the magnitude depends on the observable used and can have the opposite sign Zhao et al. (2012). This has frustrated attempts to determine the deep meridional flow in the solar convection zone, with Zhao et al. (2012) applying an ad hoc correction with little physical basis to correct the data. In this letter we propose that part of this effect can be explained by the highly asymmetrical nature of the solar granulation which results in what appears to the oscillation modes as a net radial flow, thereby imparting a phase shift on the modes as a function of observing height and thus heliocentric angle., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

The detailed abundances of 23 elements in nine bright RGB stars in the Carina dSph are presented based on high resolution spectra gathered at the VLT and Magellan telescopes. A spherical model atmospheres analysis is applied using standard methods to spectra ranging from 380 to 680 nm. The stars in this analysis range from -2.9 < [Fe/H] < -1.3, and adopting the ages determined by Lemasle et al. (2012), we are able to examine the chemical evolution of Carina's old and intermediate-aged populations. One of the main results from this work is the evidence for inhomogeneous mixing in Carina; a large dispersion in [Mg/Fe] indicates poor mixing in the old population, an offset in the [alpha/Fe] ratios between the old and intermediate-aged populations (when examined with previously published results) suggests that the second star formation event occurred in alpha-enriched gas, and one star, Car-612, seems to have formed in a pocket enhanced in SN Ia/II products. This latter star provides the first direct link between the formation of stars with enhanced SN Ia/II ratios in dwarf galaxies to those found in the outer Galactic halo (Ivans et al. 2003). Another important result is the potential evidence for SN II driven winds. We show that the very metal-poor stars in Carina have not been enhanced in AGB or SN Ia products, and therefore their very low ratios of [Sr/Ba] suggests the loss of contributions from the early SNe II. Low ratios of [Na/Fe], [Mn/Fe], and [Cr/Fe] in two of these stars support this scenario, with additional evidence from the low [Zn/Fe] upper limit for one star. It is interesting that the chemistry of the metal-poor stars in Carina is not similar to those in the Galaxy, most of the other dSphs, or the UFDs, and suggests that Carina may be at the critical mass where some chemical enrichment events are lost through SN II driven winds., 28 pages, 26 figures. While the {\it Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager} (HMI) onboard the {\it Solar Dynamics Observatory} (SDO) provides Doppler velocity [$V$], continuum intensity [$I_C$], and line-depth [$Ld$] observations, each of which is sensitive to the five-minute acoustic spectrum, the {\it Atmospheric Imaging Array} (AIA) also observes at wavelengths -- specifically the 1600 and 1700 Angstrom bands -- that are partly formed in the upper photosphere and have good sensitivity to acoustic modes. In this article we consider the characteristics of the spatio--temporal Fourier spectra in AIA and HMI observables for a 15-degree region around NOAA Active Region 11072. We map the spatio--temporal-power distribution for the different observables and the HMI Line Core [$I_L$], or Continuum minus Line Depth, and the phase and coherence functions for selected observable pairs, as a function of position and frequency. Five-minute oscillation power in all observables is suppressed in the sunspot and also in plage areas. Above the acoustic cut-off frequency, the behaviour is more complicated: power in HMI $I_C$ is still suppressed in the presence of surface magnetic fields, while power in HMI $I_L$ and the AIA bands is suppressed in areas of surface field but enhanced in an extended area around the active region, and power in HMI $V$ is enhanced in a narrow zone around strong-field concentrations and suppressed in a wider surrounding area. The relative phase of the observables, and their cross-coherence functions, are also altered around the active region. These effects may help us to understand the interaction of waves and magnetic fields in the different layers of the photosphere, and will need to be taken into account in multi-wavelength local helioseismic analysis of active regions., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, to be published in Solar Physics

High degree solar mode frequencies as measured by ring diagrams are known to change in the presence of the strong magnetic fields found in active regions. We examine these changes in frequency for a large sample of active regions analyzed with data from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) onboard the SoHO spacecraft, spanning most of solar cycle 23. We confirm that the frequencies increase with increasing magnetic field strength, and that this dependence is generally linear. While sunspots are easily observed at the solar surface, determining their subsurface structure is not trivial. There are two main hypotheses for the subsurface structure of sunspots: the monolithic model and the cluster model. Local helioseismology is the only means by which we can investigate subphotospheric structure. However, as current linear inversion techniques do not yet allow helioseismology to probe the internal structure with sufficient confidence to distinguish between the monolith and cluster models, the development of physically realistic sunspot models are a priority for helioseismologists. This is because they are not only important indicators of the variety of physical effects that may influence helioseismic inferences in active regions, but they also enable detailed assessments of the validity of helioseismic interpretations through numerical forward modeling. In this paper, we provide a critical review of the existing sunspot models and an overview of numerical methods employed to model wave propagation through model sunspots. We then carry out an helioseismic analysis of the sunspot in Active Region 9787 and address the serious inconsistencies uncovered by \citeauthor{gizonetal2009}~(\citeyear{gizonetal2009,gizonetal2009a}). We find that this sunspot is most probably associated with a shallow, positive wave-speed perturbation (unlike the traditional two-layer model) and that travel-time measurements are consistent with a horizontal outflow in the surrounding moat., Comment: 73 pages, 19 figures, accepted by Solar Physics

Asteroseismology of stars in clusters has been a long-sought goal because the assumption of a common age, distance and initial chemical composition allows strong tests of the theory of stellar evolution. We report results from the first 34 days of science data from the Kepler Mission for the open cluster NGC 6819 -- one of four clusters in the field of view. We obtain the first clear detections of solar-like oscillations in the cluster red giants and are able to measure the large frequency separation and the frequency of maximum oscillation power. We find that the asteroseismic parameters allow us to test cluster-membership of the stars, and even with the limited seismic data in hand, we can already identify four possible non-members despite their having a better than 80% membership probability from radial velocity measurements. We are also able to determine the oscillation amplitudes for stars that span about two orders of magnitude in luminosity and find good agreement with the prediction that oscillation amplitudes scale as the luminosity to the power of 0.7. Various methods of helioseismology are used to study the subsurface properties of the sunspot in NOAA Active Region 9787. This sunspot was chosen because it is axisymmetric, shows little evolution during 20-28 January 2002, and was observed continuously by the MDI/SOHO instrument. (...) Wave travel times and mode frequencies are affected by the sunspot. In most cases, wave packets that propagate through the sunspot have reduced travel times. At short travel distances, however, the sign of the travel-time shifts appears to depend sensitively on how the data are processed and, in particular, on filtering in frequency-wavenumber space. We carry out two linear inversions for wave speed: one using travel-times and phase-speed filters and the other one using mode frequencies from ring analysis. These two inversions give subsurface wave-speed profiles with opposite signs and different amplitudes. (...) Normal modes of oscillation of the Sun are useful probes of the solar interior. In this work, we use the even-order splitting coefficients to study the evolution of magnetic fields in the convection zone over solar cycle 23, assuming that the frequency splitting is only due to rotation and a large scale magnetic field. We find that the data are best fit by a combination of a poloidal field and a double-peaked near-surface toroidal field. The toroidal fields are centered at r=0.999R_solar and r=0.996R_solar and are confined to the near-surface layers. The poloidal field is a dipole field. The peak strength of the poloidal field is 124 +/- 17G. The toroidal field peaks at 380 +/- 30G and 1.4 +/- 0.2kG for the shallower and deeper fields respectively. The field strengths are highly correlated with surface activity. The toroidal field strength shows a hysteresis-like effect when compared to the global 10.7 cm radio flux. The frequencies of solar oscillations are known to change with solar activity. We use Principal Component Analysis to examine these changes with high precision. In addition to the well-documented changes in solar normal mode oscillations with activity as a function of frequency, which originate in the surface layers of the Sun, we find a small but statistically significant change in frequencies with an origin at and below the base of the convection zone. We find that at r=(0.712^{+0.0097}_{-0.0029})R_sun, the change in sound speed is \delta c^2 / c^2 = (7.23 +/- 2.08) x 10^{-5} between high and low activity. This change is very tightly correlated with solar activity. In addition, we use the splitting coefficients to examine the latitudinal structure of these changes. The combination of high resolution, spatial coverage, and continuity of photospheric Doppler and other data from HMI has allowed us to embark on a program of systematic exploration of solar subsurface flows and thermal structure variations using the technique of ring-diagram analysis on an unprecedented scale. There are two ring-diagrams pipelines, as described in [1]. In this paper we discuss the synoptic pipeline execution and describe the data being processed and produced.

We present a large sample of 264 active regions from solar cycle 23, analysed using ring diagrams. The frequencies of these rings are inverted to determine the thermal structure (sound speed and adiabatic index) of these regions as a function of radius. The large sample allows us to describe in a statistically significant way how the thermal properties of the outer layers of the Sun change in the presence of magnetic fields.

The combination of high resolution, spatial coverage, and continuity of photospheric Doppler and other data from HMI has allowed us to embark on a program of systematic exploration of solar subsurface flows and thermal structure variations using the technique of ring-diagram analysis on an unprecedented scale. Two ring-diagrams pipelines exist: a synoptic program aimed at mapping the evolution of the circulation and local subsurface flows on a global scale from the surface to depths of down to 0.9Rsun, and a targeted program designed to provide a comprehensive view of the thermal structure anomalies associated with loci of magnetic activity over the course of their life cycles. In this paper we describe the analysis techniques implemented in the processing pipelines.

Coherent power above the photospheric acoustic cut-off frequency (at v ~ 5.3mHz) is known to exist in solar helioseismic observations. The arrival of high quality velocity data with high temporal and spatial resolution from the Helioseismic & Magnetic Imager (HMI) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft allows the high frequency regime to be explored with greater precision than previously. We analyse mode frequencies, widths, and amplitudes from HMI ring diagrams at high frequencies, and compare them to earlier results.
