Abstract

The influence of pH and temperature on the hydrolysis of saccharin was studied. An ultraviolet absorption method was used to determine the amount of saccharin decomposed. The limit of accuracy of the determination represents 1 per cent decomposition. It was found that for all practical purposes saccharin in aqueous buffered solutions of pH 3.3, 7.0, and 8.0 is unaffected by heating at temperatures of 100, 125, and 150° for one hour.
