Feeding is a complex process that involves an integrated response of multiple functional systems. Animals evolve phenotypic integration of complex morphological traits to covary and maximize performance of feeding behaviors. Specialization, such as feeding on dangerous prey, can further shape the integration of behavior and morphology as traits are expected to evolve and maintain function in parallel. Feeding on centipedes, with their powerful forcipules that pinch and inject venom, has evolved multiple times within snakes, including the genus Tantilla. However, the behavioral and morphological adaptations used to consume this dangerous prey are poorly understood. By studying snakes with varying degrees of dietary specialization we can test the integration of diet, morphology, and behavior to better understand the evolution of consuming difficult prey. We studied prey preference and feeding behavior of Tantilla using the flat-headed snake (T. gracilis) and the crowned snake (T. coronata) which differ in the percentage of centipedes in their diet. We then quantified cranial anatomy using geometric morphometric data from CT scans. To test prey preference, we offered multiple types of prey and recorded snake behavior. Both species of snakes showed interest in multiple prey types, but only struck or consumed centipedes. To subdue centipedes, crowned snakes used coiling and holding (envenomation) immediately after striking, while flat-headed snakes used the novel behavior of pausing and holding onto centipedes for a prolonged time prior to completion of swallowing. Each skull element differed in shape after removing the effects of size, position, and orientation. The rear fang was larger in crowned snakes, but the mechanical advantage of the lower jaw was greater in flat-headed snakes. Our results suggest that the integration of behavioral and morphological adaptations is important for the success of subduing and consuming dangerous prey.

Research focused on understanding the evolutionary factors that shape parity mode evolution among vertebrates have long focused on squamate reptiles (snakes and lizards), which contain all but one of the evolutionary transitions from oviparity to viviparity among extant amniotes. While most hypotheses have focused on the role of cool temperatures in favoring viviparity in thermoregulating snakes and lizards, there is a growing appreciation in the biogeographic literature for the importance of lower oxygen concentrations at high elevations for the evolution of parity mode. However, the physiological mechanisms underlying how hypoxia might reduce fitness, and how viviparity can alleviate this fitness decrement, has not been systematically evaluated. We qualitatively evaluated previous research on reproductive and developmental physiology, and found that (1) hypoxia can negatively affect fitness of squamate embryos, (2) oxygen availability in the circulatory system of adult lizards can be similar or greater than an egg, and (3) gravid females can possess adaptive phenotypic plasticity in response to hypoxia. These findings suggest that the impact of hypoxia on the development and physiology of oviparous and viviparous squamates would be a fruitful area of research for understanding the evolution of viviparity. To that end, we propose an integrative research program for studying hypoxia and the evolution of viviparity in squamates.

Many organisms have evolved coloration that increases their likelihood of survival. Crypsis is one such mechanism employed by many animals to avoid detection by blending into their habitat. By remaining unseen, these animals can enhance predation avoidance and prey acquisition. If an animal can recognize backgrounds and substrates that more closely match its own color and pattern within its habitat, then it could behaviorally enhance the effectiveness of crypsis and therefore further increase its own fitness. We use a common cryptic reptile, the corn snake (Pantherophis gutattus), to test whether snakes can recognize complexity and shade of their habitat and then position their body in substrates or on backgrounds that maximize concealment as perceived by a human. We use equal-options choice trials to determine two-dimensional background choice and pairwise comparisons to determine the hierarchy of choice among three-dimensional substrates. We show that corn snakes tend to choose more complex backgrounds and substrates while avoiding the high contrast of solid-white backgrounds. This indicates that these organisms seek out areas where their cryptic color and pattern are most effective.

Predator-based selection has resulted in the repeated evolution of a variety of antipredator traits. Despite the effectiveness of these traits, some species experience shifts or even complete loss of antipredator traits during development. The evolutionary forces that favour such a transition are poorly understood. We sought to comprehend the role of predator-based selection and organismal factors underlying developmental loss of antipredator traits by focusing on decoy coloration in skink lizards. To this end, we studied the ontogenetic loss of decoy tail coloration in three Nearctic skink species. We performed natural history collection surveys and clay-model studies on predation to determine the organismal determinants of decoy coloration (body size and energy content of the tail) and predation based upon size and decoy coloration. We found that decoy coloration was lost during development at a similar size in all three species. Although predation rates on juvenile models were similar for both uniform brown and decoy models, predation rates on adult models with decoy coloration were much higher than those on non-decoy adult models. Overall, our results suggest that predator-based selection is an important factor driving the ontogenetic loss of decoy coloration at similar sizes across these species and might be generalizable to other antipredator traits.

Predator-prey interactions can be important drivers of morphological evolution, and antipredator traits in particular. Further, ecological context can be an important factor shaping the evolution of these traits. However, the role of ecological factors such as habitat structure in altering predator-based selection is not well known for antipredator traits such as decoy coloration. We used a combination of a natural history collection survey and a clay model experiment in open- and closed-canopy habitats to study how ecological context alters the fitness benefit of either red or blue decoy coloration in skinks. We found that the development and ecology of red decoy coloration of mole skinks differed substantially from blue tail coloration of other sympatric skink species. Mole skinks do not reach the body size of sympatric species of skinks and retain decoy coloration throughout development. Both patterns of scarring in museum specimens and attacks on plasticine models suggest that red coloration serves as a decoy, attracting attacks to the autotomous tail. While predation rates were similar across habitats, models with red tails were attacked far less frequently in open habitats than models with blue tails, while attack rates were similar in closed habitats. Our results suggest that red decoy coloration in mole skinks could be an adaptation to relatively open-canopy habitats. Our study has important implications for understanding how habitat structure and predator-based selection can alter the evolutionary dynamics of decoy coloration.

Viviparity, the bearing of live young, has evolved well over 100 times among squamate reptiles. This reproductive strategy is hypothesized to allow maternal control of the foetus' thermal environment and thereby to increase the fitness of the parents and offspring. Two hypotheses have been posited to explain this phenomenon: (i) the cold-climate hypothesis (CCH), which advocates low temperatures as the primary selective force; and (ii) the maternal manipulation hypothesis (MMH), which advocates temperature variability as the primary selective force. Here, we investigate whether climatic and geographic variables associated with the CCH vs. the MMH best explain the current geographical distributions of viviparity in lizards while incorporating recent advances in comparative methods, squamate phylogenetics and geospatial analysis. To do this, we compared nonphylogenetic and phylogenetic models predicting viviparity based on point-of-capture data from 20,994 museum specimens representing 215 lizard species in conjunction with spatially explicit bioclimatic and geographic (elevation and latitude) data layers. The database we analysed emphasized Nearctic lizards from three species-rich genera (Phrynosoma, Plestiodon and Sceloporus); however, we additionally analysed a less substantial, but worldwide sample of species to verify the universality of our Nearctic results. We found that maximum temperature of the warmest month (and, less commonly, elevation and maximum temperature of the driest quarter) was frequently the best predictor of viviparity and showed an association consistent with the CCH. Our results strongly favour the CCH over the MMH in explaining lizard reproductive mode evolution.

The Common Five-Lined Skink ( Plestiodon fasciatus ), Southeastern Five-Lined Skink ( P. inexpectatus ), and Broadheaded Skink ( P. laticeps ) are all found in forested ecosystems of the southeastern United States and occur in apparent sympatry. No aspect of their ecology has been quantitatively shown to be different. Differences in their natural history, such as northern extent of geographic range, observations of differences in habitat preference, and differing physiological responses to temperature, implicate the thermal environment as a potential niche dimension by which these organisms partition resources. Here we show that the northernmost extent of each species' range can be adequately discriminated by temperature extremes and that their preferred habitats differ in canopy cover, mean temperature, and daily maximum temperatures. These differences are supported by observations in the field. Based upon these findings and observations, we conclude that these species may be able to exist in such close proximity due to differences in their thermal niche, particularly the two like-sized species, P. fasciatus and P. inexpectatus. P. laticeps is a much larger lizard as an adult and functionally coexists with its congeners, potentially by partitioning resources along a different axis.

Hollow copper models painted to match the reflectance of the animal subject are standard in thermal ecology research. While the copper electroplating process results in accurate models, it is relatively time consuming, uses caustic chemicals, and the models are often anatomically imprecise. Although the decreasing cost of 3D printing can potentially allow the reproduction of highly accurate models, the thermal performance of 3D printed models has not been evaluated. We compared the cost, accuracy, and performance of both copper and 3D printed lizard models and found that the performance of the models were statistically identical in both open and closed habitats. We also find that 3D models are more standard, lighter, durable, and inexpensive, than the copper electroformed models.

Physiologic rest for the cervical spine is the treatment of choice for fracture, fracture dislocation, arthritis, radiculitis and other orthopedic or neurologic lesions involving the anatomic structures that lie between the base of the skull and the thorax. Continuous immobilization for a prolonged period of time, as following fracture or dislocation of a cervical vertebra, is accomplished with greatest efficiency by a neatly applied plaster cast. A more difficult problem in splinting is presented by those patients who require, for use during the day, a light and effective support which may be removed at night or for physical therapy procedures. If a particular type of cervical collar is to serve the greatest field of usefulness, it must be quickly available and the cost must be within the means of the average patient. Commercially prepared braces for the cervical spine are, for the most part, unsatisfactory in that they are bulky

Penetrating wounds of the heart usually are rapidly fatal. In spite of the fact that the infrequency of the condition prevents any one man from acquiring a wide experience, analysis of reports collected from the literature, as well as facts obtained from animal experimentation, have established methods which are proving their value in the increased number of successful cases that have been reported in the last few years. This is verified by the periodic reviews of the literature, which have shown a decline in the mortality rate from 63.7 per cent, as reported by Peck 1 in 1909, to 34 per cent, as reported by Ramsdell 2 in 1934, given in the accompanying table. It is our desire to call attention to a procedure which, if used more frequently in certain types of injury, may possibly result in a further reduction in the mortality rate.
