This study presents a practical developed for an undergraduate geotechnical engineering course. The practical was designed to reduce systematic issues so that students could focus on cognitive and conceptual issues rather than practical minutiae. Compression tests were carried out on dry halite, enabling consistent specimen densities to be achieved by different groups who then produced a composite compression curve for a given particle size range by piecewise loading to different maximum stresses. Using this approach, the compression test could be completed within a 1.75-h practical session, rather than over several days as is often the case for compression tests of clays. Data of sufficiently high precision were produced for students to link findings to research reported in the literature. Carrying out tests on halite also enabled students to re-engage with minerology concepts presented in geology courses from previous years. Student feedback suggested that the most challenging aspects of the assignment were handling the large data set, making sense of the literature, and writing a single-page report. These were all key learning outcomes anticipated for this activity.

Key Clinical Message Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment of testicular rhabdomyosarcomas including surgery and chemotherapy significantly reduce local recurrence and improve survival rates in young adults with metastases. Adjuvant chemotherapy is highly recommended to enhances prognosis and survival outcomes.

Key Clinical Message Conservative nonsurgical therapy ensures that the resolution is nearly 80% for vesicoureteral reflux grades I and II and 30%–50% for vesicoureteral reflux grades III and V within 4–5 years of follow‐up. Open surgical reimplantation of ureters of grades IV and V is a highly successful procedure, with reported correction rates ranging from 95% to 99% regardless of the severity of vesicoureteral reflux. Abstract Patients with vesicoureteral reflux present with a wide range of severity. With an incidence of approximately 1%, vesicoureteral reflux is a relatively common urological abnormality in children. Postnatal diagnosis of vesicoureteral reflux is typically made following a diagnosis of a urinary tract infection and less frequently following family screening. Voiding cystourethrograms remain the gold standard for diagnosing vesicoureteral reflux. To preserve the kidney and prevent the need for potential renal replacement therapy, infants with a single kidney require significantly more assessments and prompt decision‐making. Surgical correction is advised for patients with vesicoureteral reflux grades IV and V, while vesicoureteral reflux grades I, II, and III are managed conservatively.

Background: Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is one of the most common infections in females. In recent decades, reports of incidence of non-albicans candida species causing VVC is increasing, and this has led to a lot of therapeutic failures. Thus, this study aimed to detect Candida species among women who presented with VVC in Babcock University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Ogun State. Methods: This was a cross-sectional retrospective hospital-based study carried out in BUTH. Candida isolates from high vaginal swab of 82 women who presented with VVC at the gynecology and family medicine clinics of the hospital were retrieved for a period of 2 years, January 2019 till December 2020. The isolates were analyzed by standard medical microbiology technique. Information on sociodemographic and behavioral factors were retrieved from clinical case notes. The data were analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. Results: The 82 isolates analyzed yielded 87 species of Candida. Out of the 87 isolates of Candida, the albicans species were 50 (57.5%) while the non-albicans were 37 (42.5%). Among the non-albicans species, 16 (43.2%) Candida krusei had the highest frequency while 7 (19.0%) Candida tropicalis had the least and the other isolates that are unidentified by CHROMagaar accounted for 14 (37.8%). Candida albicans was predominant among 12/18 (66.7%) participants with present multiple sex partners. C. albicans was significantly associated with hormonal contraceptives and C. krusei with wearing of tight and nylon underwear, respectively, on bivariate analysis (P < 0.05). Conclusion: C. albicans was the predominant identified species from this study; however, the prevalence of the non-albicans candida species was still high.

Key Clinical Message The “gold standard” treatment for Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is radical cystectomy and different management approaches that combine chemotherapy and radiation in a neoadjuvant or adjuvant setting have been attempted with varying degrees of effectiveness. For certain individuals, partial cystectomy offers sufficient local control for muscle‐invasive bladder cancer. Lifelong follow‐up with cystoscopy is advised due to the possibility of potentially fatal late recurrence. Abstract Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the bladder is a rare urologic malignancy that is estimated to affect 3%–5% of the bladder cases. SCC of the bladder remains the most common subtype throughout Africa. Most of the literatures focused on the management of Urothelial carcinoma (UC), with fewer discussions on SCC management. UC typically presents with painless hematuria, whereas SCC presents with painful hematuria, bladder mass, and necroturia. SCC is mostly radioresistant and does not respond to chemotherapy. The mainstay treatment is partial cystectomy or radical cystectomy, which can be performed through open surgery or laparoscopic or robot‐assisted approaches, all of which have acceptable results. We report a patient with a favorable outcome following partial cystectomy who was managed by open surgery. At the 12‐month follow‐up, the patient remained asymptomatic with good surgical outcomes.

Abstract Remote areas, such as the Amazon Forest, face unique geographical challenges of transportation-based access to health services. As transportation to healthcare in most of the Amazon Forest is only possible by rivers routes, any travel time and travel distance estimation is limited by the lack of data sources containing rivers as potential transportation routes. Therefore, we developed an approach to convert the geographical representation of roads and rivers in the Amazon into a combined, interoperable, and reusable dataset. To build the dataset, we processed and combined data from three data sources: OpenStreetMap, HydroSHEDS, and GloRiC. The resulting dataset can consider distance metrics using the combination of streets and rivers as a transportation route network for the Amazon Forest. The created dataset followed the guidelines and attributes defined by OpenStreetMap to leverage its reusability and interoperability possibilities. This new data source can be used by policymakers, health authorities, and researchers to perform time-to-care analysis in the International Amazon region.
