Abstract

Similarity plasmas are studied in JET, ASDEX Upgrade and ALCATOR C-Mod to test the validity of dimensional constraints for core profiles and profiles at the plasma edge in H-modes with and without large dge Localised Modes and at the H-mode transition. Core and H-mode edge profiles in the studied comparison pairs of pulses match within uncertainties. Identical scaled H-mode threshold and edge MHD behaviour is obtained in JET and ASDEX Upgrade for same edge Ρ*, ν*,and β. In contrast, constant edge temperature, required for identity of atomic cross sections, does not describe operational regime boundaries in the two machines. First attempts have been made to reproduce ALCATOR C-Mod EDA-mode plasmas in ASDEX Upgrade; the results of the best matches obtained are reported.

Abstract

The recent development of real-time measurements and control tools in JET has enhanced the reliability and reproducibility of the relevant ITER scenarios. Diagnostics such as charge exchange, interfero-polarimetry, electron cyclotron emission have been upgraded for real-time measurements. In addition, real-time processes like magnetic equilibrium and q profile reconstruction have been developed and applied successfully in real-time q profile control experiments using model based control techniques. Plasma operation and control against magnetohydrodynamic instabilities are also benefiting from these new systems. The experience gained at JET in the field of real-time measurement and control experiments operation constitutes a very useful basis for the future operation of ITER scenarios.

Abstract

The capabilities of the Joint European Torus (JET) electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostics have recently been extended with an upgrading of the heterodyne radiometer. The number of channels has been doubled to 96 channels, with a frequency separation corresponding to <1 cm for JET magnetic field gradient, and with a frequency response of 1 MHz. This enhancement has increased the radial coverage of the ECE electron temperature measurements in JET to approximately the full plasma column (limited at R>2.6 m for the X-mode due to harmonic overlap) at almost all magnetic field values used at JET (1.7 TT<4 T), while maintaining the high sensitivity and spectral resolution of the previous system.
