To understand the conditions that support employee green behavior across cultures, we develop and test a conceptual model that describes how normative cues from work team leaders and peers in combination with country cultural norms shape discretionary green workplace behavior. Data from 1,605 employees in five countries indicate that power distance moderates the positive relationships observed between the discretionary green workplace behavior of leaders and their subordinates. In addition, an observed positive relationship between team green advocacy and individual discretionary green workplace behavior held across both collectivistic and individualistic cultures, contrary to our predictions. By taking macro-level cultural context into account and examining its interplay with lower-level work team norms, the study makes a significant contribution to understanding and intervening employees’ discretionary green behavior at work.

PurposeDrawing on the conservation of resources theory, this study aims to apply a mixed-method to enrich the literature by investigating interrelationships among training, environmental triggers (environmental knowledge, awareness and concern) and employees' intention to carry out environmental activities.Design/methodology/approachThis research applied a mixed-method carried out in Vietnam. By using the time-lagged data, Study 1 (quantitative research) was employed to test hypotheses. With Study 2 (qualitative research), four in-depth interviews were conducted to gain insight into a few unexpected findings from Study 1.FindingsStudy 1 indicates that environmental training is critical to directly boost not only the three environmental triggers but also employees' intention to engage in environmental activities. The findings further point out that environmental concern and awareness mediate the relationship between environmental training and employees' intention to engage in environmental activities. Unexpectedly, connections from environmental concern and awareness to employees' intentions were not moderated by environmental knowledge. The findings of Study 2 shed light on the role of environmental knowledge.Originality/valueBased on the conservation of resources and social exchange theories, the research contributes to the existing literature by providing a better understanding of how environmental training stimulates employees' intention to implement environmental activities. The findings may be helpful for managers to encourage employees to contribute to organizations' green objectives.

PurposeThe metaverse development is in the early stages in most organizations and supply chains. There has been exponential growth in metaverse investments by leading tech and other types of companies and governments worldwide. This article aims to shed light on the topic by providing detailed insights for the operations and supply chain management (O&SCM) community concerning the potential, opportunities and challenges associated with the metaverse.Design/methodology/approachThe authors mapped 15 benefits and 15 challenges regarding metaverse in O&SCM-related fields from the literature, which in turn were empirically tested by a panel with 150 experts from more than 12 countries, from operations and supply chains and with experience in metaverse technologies.FindingsThe authors found notable similarities and differences between metaverse adopters and non-adopters in the O&SCM. Accordingly, some benefits and challenges are expected before and after the implementation, but it's still relevant. In contrast, there are ones that change their importance after the implementation.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, this paper points out the need for an urgent call for action to develop high-quality research on the interplay between metaverse and O&SCM. Second, the metaverse will reshape several established business models by offering new products and services, consequently resulting in the remodeling of O&SCM. Third, our paper provides a call for action to engage the community of scholars and practitioners to consider the metaverse as one of the last frontiers of O&SCM in the digital age.Originality/valueThis paper is one of the first that investigates the metaverse benefits, challenges and expectations in the O&SCM. Also, it provides robust directions by an empirical approach to the metaverse as a new and important research stream for O&SCM and related fields. The authors provide a prospective research agenda that scholars and practitioners could use as a roadmap to capture metaverse opportunities in O&SCM.

Purpose This study aims to envisage the impact of green project management (GPM) practices on sustainable competitive advantage (SCA). Moreover, this study also accessed the mediating role of green knowledge acquisition (GKA) as a mechanism between GPM and SCA. Design/methodology/approach Using a quantitative field survey, the data were collected from the multi-sector manufacturing enterprises (n = 265) in Pakistan. The measurement and structural model were tested through Analysis of Moment Structure by conducting a covariance structure analysis. Findings The findings suggest that GPM practices are positively related to SCA. In addition to this direct effect, GKA play a significant role in explaining the associations between GPM practices and SCA. The findings bring essential insights for the enterprises, policymakers, practitioners and project managers to promote GPM practices for low-carbon projects to achieve SCA. Research limitations/implications The data used in this study is cross-sectional in nature. The geographic location is limited to firms in Pakistan, while well-validated subjective measures are used to make the survey more convenient for participants. Practical implications The practitioners in general, while project managers in particular, are recommended to implement GPM practices and GKA to achieve high performance of SCA. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies to examine GPM practices and its effect on SCA directly and via GKA in a single model.

This study employs a structured literature analysis considering Industry 4.0 technologies and their adoption stages (intention, adoption, implementation, routinization, continuance, and diffusion). We identify the technology adoption stage for each technology type, which in turn supports a maturity level categorization, as well as future research suggestions and challenging open research questions. By considering an integrated view of all the adoption stages of Industry 4.0 key technologies, we reveal the key technologies and their development stages, as well as a novel maturity level categorization perspective. The proposed categorization brings valuable research insights in the form of guidelines for practitioners and decision-makers interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the maturity level of key Industry 4.0 technologies.

Anchored in emerging theoretical insights regarding sustainable human resource management, with a focus on pursuing socially responsible HR, we propose that enhancing employees' career satisfaction in public sector organisations constitutes a unique opportunity for public sector organisations to improve their internal social responsibility, focussing on employees as key stakeholders. In this context, this study provides original evidence regarding an original framework for examining the determinants and outcomes of employees' career satisfaction in the US federal agencies, with implications for the internal social responsibility of public sector organisations, which is a dimension of sustainable HR. We use a longitudinal study design involving a sample of permanent, full-time civilian federal employees from two surveys conducted by the US Merit Systems Protection Board. We suggest key factors that affect public sector employees' career satisfaction and aspirations. These key factors may be useful for public sector organisations that wish to design more sustainable and socially responsible HRM centred around the career satisfaction of their internal stakeholders.

Although some studies indicate that organizational culture (OC) is a factor that influences knowledge management in companies, the relationships between different types of OC and the adoption of open innovation (OI) remain unclear, especially in the context of emerging economies such as Brazil. Our study addresses this research gap by investigating the relationships among OC, inbound and outbound OI, innovation ecosystems and innovative performance. With data collected from 169 companies in Brazil, our main results show that adhocracy culture is the type of OC that most influences the adoption of inbound and outbound OI flows, and that hierarchy culture discourages the adoption of OI. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-01-01 While the circular economy (CE) attracts attention from scholars and practitioners, the concept has been challenged by claims that the CE may be seen as a vague concept, or a new label for old green management practices. We propose a new approach to study the effects of the CE on company performance: circular product design (CPD). Consequently, this work investigates how Industry 4.0 technologies and stakeholder pressure influence CPD and, in turn, impact on company performance. Data were obtained from firms which develop products in the electric–electronic and equipment (EEE) sectors in Brazil. Our research results indicate that (i) the application of Industry 4.0 technologies favors CPD, in particular artificial intelligence and big data analytics; (ii) pressure from stakeholders can encourage the adoption of circular strategies, specially from suppliers because they are responsible for developing and delivering smart components; and (iii) although the literature may be seen as controversial, there is a positive relationship with regard to the impacts of CE adoption on market performance. With attempts being made by both governments and organizations to reduce environmental hazards, blockchain technology is becoming a crucial tool for attaining supply chain sustainability in small and medium enterprises (SME). Recognizing this fact, this study investigates the effect of blockchain technology on sustainable supply chain practices to improve organizational performance. In this investigation, data was gathered from 364 respondents, including middle and upper-level managers from SME manufacturing companies in China and Pakistan. The relationships among the endogenous and exogenous variables were tested by employing partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The primary results suggest that blockchain technology and green information systems positively influence sustainable supply chain practices. Moreover, green information systems and sustainable supply chain practices possess a significant positive association. Sustainable supply chain practices have a positive and significant relationship with sustainability; i.e., operational, environmental, and economic performance. The findings also reveal that three dimensions of organizational sustainability—i.e., operational, environmental, and economic performance—have a significant effect on organizational performance. Additionally, the results of this study provide valuable insights into blockchain technology and offer policy implications for manufacturers and legislators regarding the implementation and promotion of green supply chain practices.

The integration of the circular economy (CE) and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) has attracted significant attention from scholars and practitioners. The effective integration between CE and I4.0 depends on the level of systemic assessment. This paper develops a self-assessment model to evaluate the systemic level of integration of CE and I4.0 within organizations using a dynamic capabilities perspective. The model uses a conceptual framework representing the most relevant CE–I4.0 integration practices under eight dimensions from the extant literature. The model also uses a graph-theoretic approach to evaluate the level of CE–I4.0 integration through a standardized index. The CE–I4.0 Integration Index (CE–I4.0 II) incorporates the interactions between different dimensions and practices, and enables quantifying the CE–I4.0 integration level. The index allows organizations to be grouped into three categories: “beginner, “ongoing,” and “performing.” The model CE–I4.0 II is implemented within four different organizations and evaluated to illustrate this model's industrial applicability. Finally, we discuss implications for theory and practice, and the potential extension of the study.

In the past few years, the implementation of a more sustainable mode of production has become necessary for manufacturing companies to thrive in the international business context. Professionals and researchers are also paying increasing attention to Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and big data, as well as Circular Economy (CE) concepts, due to the many advantages they can provide for the manufacturing industry. The purpose of the CE is the effective utilization of resources, and the I4.0 concept has been established to help achieve this objective and requires further exploration in the field of sustainable production. Research gaps exist in the literature regarding challenges to I4.0 and CE in terms of Sustainable Footwear Production (SFP) in emerging economies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to deliver an original analysis of the most significant challenges regarding the interaction of I4.0 and CE for SFP. A comprehensive literature review is performed to establish the challenges to I4.0-CE for SFP in the context of emerging economies. Further, the challenges identified are prioritized based on the assessment of a real case study from the footwear industry. A mixed methodology (i.e., both qualitative and quantitative) is adopted to identify the cause-effect interactions among the identified challenges. The results of our analysis show that the five most important causal challenges obstructing the execution of SFP in the footwear industry are ‘deficient legislative-industry strategies towards SFP adoption’, ‘lack of competence in I4.0 and CE concepts for SFP adoption’, ‘understanding of synchronization among suppliers for attaining SFP’, ‘uncertain economic benefits of I4.0 and CE application for attaining SFP’ and ‘inadequate support for industries towards SFP efforts’. This study may be beneficial for industry managers, practitioners and decision makers to establish an understanding of I4.0-CE initiatives and to mitigate the most significant challenges regarding the successful implementation of I4.0-CE for SFP.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant disruptions to global operations and supply chains. While the huge impact of the pandemic has nurtured important literature over the last couple of years, little is being said about the role of resource orchestration in supporting resilience in highly disruptive contexts. Thus, this study aims to this knowledge gap by proposing an original model to explore supply chain resilience (SCRE) antecedents, considering supply chain alertness (SCAL) as a central point to support resilience. This study focuses on the resource orchestration theory (ROT) to design a conceptual model. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) served to validate the model, exploring data from the UK supply chain decision-makers. The study reveals a number of both expected and unexpected findings. These include the evidence that supply chain disruption orientation (SCDO) has a strong positive effect on the SCAL. In addition, SCAL plays a strong positive effect in resource reconfiguration (RREC), supply chain efficiency (SCEF) and SCRE. We further identified a partial mediation effect of RREC on the relationship between SCAL and SCRE. Surprisingly, it appeared that SCAL strongly influences SCEF, while SCEF itself does not create any significant effect on SCRE. For managers and practitioners, the importance of resource orchestration as a decisive approach to adequately respond to huge disruptions is clearly highlighted by our results. Finally, this paper helps to grasp better how important resource orchestration in operations and supply chains remains for appropriate responses to high disruptions such as the COVID-19 impacts.

Orienting consumers toward organic eco-friendly beauty products is a societal challenge that resonates with growing environmental concerns following COP 21, when entrepreneurs in the cosmetic industry initiated ambitious plans to increase the proportion of natural components in their products. This study examines how green factors impact customers’ intention to purchase premium organic beauty products. We explore the mediating roles of trust and attitude on this purchase intention, using the SOR paradigm and the dual factor theory, an original approach. Data was collected from 398 respondents using convenience sampling and analysed using the IBM SPSS 22 version and AMOS 22 version package applying structural equation modelling. We show that the mediating role of trust and attitude is of the utmost importance to ensure a sustainable orientation of customers toward organic products. The findings suggest (a) green ads, green brand image and perceived consumer effectiveness positively influence consumers' attitude toward luxury organic beauty products; (b) LOHAS consumption tendency does not impact consumers' attitudes; (c) trust has a significantly negative impact on the consumer's attitude; and (d) likewise, consumers' attitude mediate the intention to purchase luxury organic beauty products. The research has significant implications for understanding India's premium organic beauty goods market and for companies to develop new strategies to market their organic cosmetics. The study also encourages policymakers to provide necessary subsidies to new organic beauty entrepreneurs.

Within the context of the circular economy, this article analyses how supermarkets can reduce food waste by implementing appropriate marketing strategies underpinned by digital technologies, such as Big Data predictive analytics. Little is currently known of the potential role of the emerging digital technologies in furthering the sustainability of supermarket chains in emerging economies. Thus, an original multiple case study has been conducted, involving six supermarket chains operating in Brazil and six farming distributors that produce fruit and vegetables (F&V). The findings show that actions towards food waste reduction based on the principles of the circular economy begin with an understanding of F&V stages of deterioration. Through such an understanding, a number of actions can be undertaken to reduce the negative effects of this deterioration. These include (among others) the management of prices, sales, operations, and purchases, all of which can be underpinned by such technologies as sensors and augmented reality in order to manage dynamic pricing, storage, and item display. The findings contribute to demonstrating how digital technologies can help supermarkets’ marketing departments in driving corporate sustainability while also benefiting both consumers and societal well-being.
