Abstract

We conduct a thorough analysis of seismic and acoustic data from the so-called `Interstellar Meteor' which entered the Earth's atmosphere off the coast of Papua New Guinea on 2014-01-08. We conclude that both previously-reported seismic signals are spurious -- one has characteristics suggesting a local vehicular-traffic based origin; whilst the other is statistically indistinguishable from the background noise. As such, previously-reported localisations based on this data are spurious. Analysis of acoustic data provides a best fit location estimate which is very far ($\sim$170~km) from the reported fireball location. Accordingly, we conclude that material recovered from the seafloor and purported to be from the meteor is almost certainly unrelated to it, and is likely of more mundane (non-interstellar) origin., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We present the first observations of seismic waves propagating through the core of Mars. These observations, made using seismic data collected by the InSight geophysical mission, have allowed us to construct the first seismically constrained models for the elastic properties of Mars' core. We observe core-transiting seismic phase SKS from two farside seismic events detected on Mars and measure the travel times of SKS relative to mantle traversing body waves. SKS travels through the core as a compressional wave, providing information about bulk modulus and density. We perform probabilistic inversions using the core-sensitive relative travel times together with gross geophysical data and travel times from other, more proximal, seismic events to seek the equation of state parameters that best describe the liquid iron-alloy core. Our inversions provide constraints on the velocities in Mars' core and are used to develop the first seismically based estimates of its composition. We show that models informed by our SKS data favor a somewhat smaller (median core radius = 1,780 to 1,810 km) and denser (core density = 6.2 to 6.3 g/cm3) core compared to previous estimates, with a P-wave velocity of 4.9 to 5.0 km/s at the core-mantle boundary, with the composition and structure of the mantle as a dominant source of uncertainty. We infer from our models that Mars' core contains a median of 20 to 22 wt% light alloying elements when we consider sulfur, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. These data can be used to inform models of planetary accretion, composition, and evolution.

Abstract

The most distant marsquake recorded so far by the InSight seismometer occurred at an epicentral distance of 146.3 ± 6.9o, close to the western end of Valles Marineris. On the seismogram of this event, we have identified seismic wave precursors, i.e., underside reflections off a subsurface discontinuity halfway between the marsquake and the instrument, which directly constrain the crustal structure away (about 4100-4500 km) from the InSight landing site. Here we show that the Martian crust at the bounce point between the lander and the marsquake is characterized by a discontinuity at about 20 km depth, similar to the second (deeper) intra-crustal interface seen beneath the InSight landing site. We propose that this 20-km interface, first discovered beneath the lander, is not a local geological structure but likely a regional or global feature, and is consistent with a transition from porous to non-porous Martian crustal materials.

Abstract

Constraining the thermal and compositional state of the mantle is crucial for deciphering the formation and evolution of Mars. Mineral physics predicts that Mars' deep mantle is demarcated by a seismic discontinuity arising from the pressure-induced phase transformation of the mineral olivine to its higher-pressure polymorphs, making the depth of this boundary sensitive to both mantle temperature and composition. Here, we report on the seismic detection of a midmantle discontinuity using the data collected by NASA's InSight Mission to Mars that matches the expected depth and sharpness of the postolivine transition. In five teleseismic events, we observed triplicated P and S waves and constrained the depth of this discontinuity to be 1,006 [Formula: see text] 40 km by modeling the triplicated waveforms. From this depth range, we infer a mantle potential temperature of 1,605 [Formula: see text] 100 K, a result consistent with a crust that is 10 to 15 times more enriched in heat-producing elements than the underlying mantle. Our waveform fits to the data indicate a broad gradient across the boundary, implying that the Martian mantle is more enriched in iron compared to Earth. Through modeling of thermochemical evolution of Mars, we observe that only two out of the five proposed composition models are compatible with the observed boundary depth. Our geodynamic simulations suggest that the Martian mantle was relatively cold 4.5 Gyr ago (1,720 to 1,860 K) and are consistent with a present-day surface heat flow of 21 to 24 mW/m2.

Abstract

Before deploying to the surface of Mars, the short-period (SP) seismometer of the InSight mission operated on deck for a total of 48 hours. This dataset can be used to understand how deck-mounted seismometers can be used in future landed missions to Mars, Europa, and other planetary bodies. While operating on deck, the SP seismometer showed signals comparable to the Viking-2 seismometer near 3 Hz where the sensitivity of the Viking instrument peaked. Wind sensitivity showed similar patterns to the Viking instrument, although amplitudes on InSight were ~80% larger for a given wind velocity. However, during the low wind evening hours the instrument noise levels at frequencies between 0.1 and 1 Hz were comparable to quiet stations on Earth, although deployment to the surface below the Wind and Thermal Shield lowered installation noise by roughly 40 dB in acceleration power. With the observed noise levels and estimated seismicity rates for Mars, detection probability for quakes for a deck-mounted instrument are low enough that up to years of on-deck recordings may be necessary to observe an event. Because the noise is dominated by wind acting on the lander, though, deck-mounted seismometers may be more practical for deployment on airless bodies, and it is important to evaluate the seismicity of the target body and the specific design of the lander. Abstract

The analysis of seismic events recorded by NASA's InSight seismometer remains challenging, given their commonly low magnitudes and large epicentral distances, and concurrently, strongly varying background noise. These factors collectively result in low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) across most event recordings. We use a deep learning denoising approach to mitigate the noise contamination, aiming to enhance the data analysis and the seismic event catalogue. Our systematic tests demonstrate that denoising performs comparable to fine-tuned bandpass filtering at high SNRs, but clearly outperforms it at low SNRs with respect to accurate waveform and amplitude retrieval, as well as onset picking. We review the denoised waveform data of all 98 low-frequency events in the Marsquake Service catalogue version 14, and improve their location when possible through the identification of phase picks and backazimuths, while ensuring consistency with the raw data. We demonstrate that several event waveforms can be explained by marsquake doublets—two similarly strong quakes in spatio-temporal proximity that result in overlapping waveforms at InSight—and we locate them in Cerberus Fossae (CF). Additionally, we identify and investigate aftershocks and an event sequence consisting of numerous relatively high magnitude marsquakes occurring within hours at epicentral distances beyond CF. As a result of this review and interpretation, we extend the catalogue in event numbers (⁠|$+$| 8 per cent), in events with epicentral distances and magnitudes (⁠|$+$| 50 per cent), and events with backazimuths and a resulting full locations (⁠|$+$| 46 per cent), leading to a more comprehensive description of Martian seismicity. 15. On the evolution of particle fragmentation with applications to planetary surfaces

Abstract

Fragmentation is a complex phenomenon seen ubiquitously in nature, with the elucidation of its complexity being one of the most popular subjects of the last century. It arises across at a vast multitude of scales in a diverse range of fields such as geophysics and materials, mineral processing, meteorological processes, astrophysics and nuclei impacts - only to be limited by the fundamental units of matter itself. This thesis establishes a new statistical basis for the evolution of particle fragmentation and the resulting product population at all scales. It is informed by the underlying physical processes and builds on the existing disconnected models of fragmentation, mainly the time-continuous grinding and the universality of critical scaleinvariant systems arising in geophysical systems. By extending fractal theory into a temporal context and lifting the various limitations posed by fractals, it provides a solution to the fragmentation problem via a statistical approach which is verified and developed based on terrestrial data from both artificial and natural fragmentation processes. It is then applied to model observations from around the solar system as both an explanatory and predictive approach to the evaluation of planetary surfaces, one of the major areas of study in planetary sciences. Furthermore, a stochastic model for drilling in a planetary regolith is developed both mathematically and through the synthesis of digital soil.

16. An investigation of an adsorption cogeneration system for power and cooling using low grade heat

Abstract

Cogeneration is a hot topic in the efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuel usage and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing the primary energy source with a low-grade heat source. Cogeneration simultaneously produces power and cooling using a low-grade heat source (e.g. solar energy, geothermal energy or waste heat), which ideally provides a renewable carbon-free solution for implementation in domestic, industrial as well as isolated areas. This research thesis describes for the first time the development and construction of the Low Heat cogeneration chemisorption system, explores its potential and makes suggestions for its future development based on the experience gained during the experiments. The design uses two adsorption cycles operating out of phase and alternatively connected to a scroll expander in order to reach 3kW of cooling and 1kW of electricity. Each adsorption cycle consists of a reactor, a condenser and an evaporator. Each reactor contains a composite mixture of CaCl2 and activated carbon at a ratio of 4:1 by mass. The system was experimentally investigated for its cooling as well as for its cogeneration performance. Experimental investigations were performed for different heating and cooling temperatures, cycle times and the optimum overall ammonia for the system. The maximum refrigeration coefficient of the performance (COPref) of the machine was found to be 0.26 when the refrigeration power was 3.52kW. At the same time, the specific cooling power (SCP) per side was 201.14W/kg (402.28W/kg per cycle) and the cooling capacity 168.96kJ/kg (337.92kJ/kg per cycle). During the cogeneration experiments it was found that the expander affected the pressure and temperature; the refrigerant flow rate and the pressure across the expander were important for the system’s power production. The maximum power recorded was 486W which provides a power coefficient of performance (COPW) of 0.048. A model to describe the desorption power generation as well as the evaporation refrigeration process was developed using the ECLIPSE software. The cooling model was validated from the experimental results and later the power model was used for ii further investigation of the system power performance. The optimisation of the machine completes the study by using both experimental and simulation data.

Abstract

When NASA’s InSight lander touched down in Elysium Planitia, Mars, in November 2018 and deployed its seismometer SEIS, it ushered in a new age for planetary seismology - more than 40 years after the first attempt to record marsquakes with the Viking missions. SEIS, an extremely sensitive instrument, has by now provided near continuous seismic records for more than 3 years. Its rich dataset shows Mars to be seismically active, with over 1,300 marsquakes detected so far, mostly with magnitudes below 4. Despite their small size, these quakes provide important and unprecedented constraints on the interior structure of the planet, from the shallow subsurface via the crust, the lithosphere, and the mantle transition zone down to the core, and allow to study Martian tectonics and thermo-chemical evolution. Single-station seismology has answered some of the big questions about the interior of our planetary neighbour, and this contribution gives an overview of results and surprises so far.

Abstract

Constraining the thermal and compositional state of the mantle is crucial for deciphering the formation and evolution of Mars. Mineral physics predicts that Mars’ deep mantle is demarcated by a seismic discontinuity arising from the pressureinduced phase transformation of the mineral olivine to its higher-pressure polymorphs, making the depth of this boundary sensitive to both mantle temperature and composition. Here, we report on the seismic detection of a midmantle discontinuity using the data collected by NASA’s InSight Mission to Mars that matches the expected depth and sharpness of the postolivine transition. In five teleseismic events, we observed triplicated P and S waves and constrained the depth of this discontinuity to be 1,006 ± 40 km by modeling the triplicated waveforms. From this depth range, we infer a mantle potential temperature of 1,605 ± 100 K, a result consistent with a crust that is 10 to 15 times more enriched in heat-producing elements than the underlying mantle. Our waveform fits to the data indicate a broad gradient across the boundary, implying that the Martian mantle is more enriched in iron compared to Earth. Through modeling of thermochemical evolution of Mars, we observe that only two out of the five proposed composition models are compatible with the observed boundary depth. Our geodynamic simulations suggest that the Martian mantle was relatively cold 4.5 Gyr ago (1,720 to 1,860 K) and are consistent with a present-day surface heat flow of 21 to 24 mW/m².
