Abstract: We incorporate Se into the 3D halide perovskite framework using the zwitterionic ligand: SeCYS (+NH3(CH2)2Se−), which occupies both the X− and A+ sites in the prototypical ABX3 perovskite. The new organoselenide‐halide perovskites: (SeCYS)PbX2 (X=Cl, Br) expand upon the recently discovered organosulfide‐halide perovskites. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis reveal the average structures of the organoselenide‐halide perovskites, whereas the local lead coordination environments and their distributions were probed through solid‐state 77Se and 207Pb NMR, complemented by theoretical simulations. Density functional theory calculations illustrate that the band structures of (SeCYS)PbX2 largely resemble those of their S analogs, with similar band dispersion patterns, yet with a considerable band gap decrease. Optical absorbance measurements indeed show band gaps of 2.07 and 1.86 eV for (SeCYS)PbX2 with X=Cl and Br, respectively. We further demonstrate routes to alloying the halides (Cl, Br) and chalcogenides (S, Se) continuously tuning the band gap from 1.86 to 2.31 eV–straddling the ideal range for tandem solar cells or visible‐light photocatalysis. The comprehensive description of the average and local structures, and how they can fine‐tune the band gap and potential trap states, respectively, establishes the foundation for understanding this new perovskite family, which combines solid‐state and organo‐main‐group chemistry.

Most research on the electrochemical dynamics in materials for high-energy Li-ion batteries has focused on the global behavior of the electrode. This approach is susceptible to misleading analyses resulting from idiosyncratic kinetic conditions, such as surface impurities inducing an apparent two-phase transformation within LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2. Here, nano-focused X-ray probes are used to measure delithiation operando at the scale of secondary particle agglomerates in layered cathode materials during charge. After an initial latent phase, individual secondary particles undergo rapid, stochastic, and largely uniform delithiation, which is in contrast with the gradual increase in cell potential. This behavior reproduces across several layered oxides. Operando X-ray microdiffraction ((Formula presented.) -XRD) leverages the relationship between Li content and lattice parameter to further reveal that rate acceleration occurs between Li-site fraction (xLi) ≈0.9 and ≈0.5 for LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2. Physics-based modeling shows that, to reproduce the experimental results, the exchange current density (i0) must depend on xLi, and that i0 should increase rapidly over three orders of magnitude at the transition point. The specifics and implications of this jump in i0 are crucial to understanding the charge-storage reaction of Li-ion battery cathodes.

This work reports a method of producing flexible cobalt nanowires (NWs) directly from the chemical conversion of bulk precursors at room temperature. Chemical reduction of Li6CoCl8 produces a nanocomposite of Co and LiCl, of which the salt is subsequently removed. The dilute concentration of Co in the precursor combined with the anisotropic crystal structure of the hcp phase leads to 1D growth in the absence of any templates or additives. The Co NWs are shown to have high saturation magnetization (130.6 emu g-1). Our understanding of the NW formation mechanism points to new directions of scalable nanostructure generation.

Low-temperature synthesis routes are necessary for selectively synthesizing many metastable solid-state materials. Here, we identify a cooperative effect that starting materials have in lowering temperatures in solid-state metathesis reactions by studying the formation of yttrium manganese oxide. Previous studies have shown that YMnO3 can be synthesized by ternary metathesis with an alkali halide being produced as a secondary product. In this contribution, we show that by using alkaline earth metals instead of alkali metals, the polymorph selectivity of the reaction is changed, as orthorhombic YMnO3 forms at lower temperatures than the hexagonal polymorph. Reactions were studied using ex post facto synchrotron X-ray diffraction. These experiments reveal that reactions using alkaline earth manganese oxides as a starting material require high temperatures to progress. Reaction temperatures can be lowered from 700 to 550 °C while maintaining phase selectivity by reacting both MgMn2O4 and CaMn2O4 with YOCl in a cooperative "cometathesis"reaction. The nascent halide salts appear to improve the reaction kinetics. Since the onset temperature for YMnO3 formation falls 50 °C below the MgCl2-CaCl2 liquidus, the enhanced reactivity is consistent with the surface melting of a nasscent salt byproduct at the interfaces. Cometathesis routes have similar phase selectivity and temperature reduction in reactions that form TbMnO3, ErMnO3, and DyMnO3. Cometathesis lowers reaction temperatures while preserving the reaction selectivity of the end members, making it a valuable approach for synthesizing metastable targets.

Lithium-rich nickel manganese cobalt oxide (LRNMC) is being explored as an alternative to stoichiometric nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) cathode materials due to its higher, initially accessible, energy-storage capacity. This higher capacity has been associated with reversible O oxidation; however, the mechanism through which the change in O chemistry is accommodated by the surrounding cathode structure remains incomplete, making it challenging to design strategies to mitigate poor electrode performance resulting from extended cycling. Focusing on LRNMC cathodes, we identify nanoscale domains of lower electron density within the cathode as a structural consequence of O oxidation using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and operando X-ray diffraction (XRD). A feature observed in the small angle scattering region suggests the formation of nanopores, which first appears during O oxidation, and is partially reversible. This feature is not present in traditional cathode materials, including stoichiometric NMC and lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) but appears to be common to other Li-rich systems tested here, Li2RuO3 and Li1.3Nb0.3Mn0.4O2.

Lithium-rich NMC (LR-NMC) compounds exhibit high capacities beyond the traditional redox, but it remains unclear whether the anomalous charge compensation mechanism is due to oxidized lattice oxygen or migration-assisted Mn oxidation. We compare LR-NMC with a model Mn7+ system (KMnO4) using a combination of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) irradiation studies and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy/X-ray diffraction (XAS/XRD) to quantify transition metal (TM) migration, Mn oxidization, and beam-induced effects. We reveal how for KMnO4 it is possible to observe beam-induced Mn reduction resulting in trapped molecular oxygen. For LR-NMC, we observe negligible evidence for Mn oxidation while stabilized tetrahedral sites correlate more with a reduced TM environment. Finally, the additional spectroscopic structures observed in oxidized oxygen RIXS for LR-NMC are absent for gas-phase molecular oxygen.

Rechargeable solid-state sodium-ion batteries (SSSBs) hold great promise for safer and more energy-dense energy storage. However, the poor electrochemical stability between current sulfide-based solid electrolytes and high-voltage oxide cathodes has limited their long-term cycling performance and practicality. Here, we report the discovery of the ion conductor Na3-xY1-xZrxCl6 (NYZC) that is both electrochemically stable (up to 3.8 V vs. Na/Na+) and chemically compatible with oxide cathodes. Its high ionic conductivity of 6.6 × 10-5 S cm-1 at ambient temperature, several orders of magnitude higher than oxide coatings, is attributed to abundant Na vacancies and cooperative MCl6 rotation, resulting in an extremely low interfacial impedance. A SSSB comprising a NaCrO2 + NYZC composite cathode, Na3PS4 electrolyte, and Na-Sn anode exhibits an exceptional first-cycle Coulombic efficiency of 97.1% at room temperature and can cycle over 1000 cycles with 89.3% capacity retention at 40 °C. These findings highlight the immense potential of halides for SSSB applications.

Synthesis parameters, storage conditions, and electrolyte chemistry are all critical parameters limiting the cycling performances of disordered rock salt cathodes.

In the synthesis of complex oxides, solid-state metathesis provides low-temperature reactions where product selectivity can be achieved through simple changes in precursor composition. The influence of precursor structure, however, is less understood in solid-state synthesis. Here we present the ternary metathesis reaction (LiMnO2 + YOCl → YMnO3 + LiCl) to target two yttrium manganese oxide products, hexagonal and orthorhombic YMnO3, when starting from three different LiMnO2 precursors. Using temperature-dependent synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction, we identify the relevant intermediates and temperature regimes of reactions along the pathway to YMnO3. Manganese-containing intermediates undergo a charge disproportionation into a reduced Mn(II,III) tetragonal spinel and oxidized Mn(III,IV) cubic spinel, which lead to hexagonal and orthorhombic YMnO3, respectively. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the presence of Mn(IV) caused by a small concentration of cation vacancies (∼2.2%) in YMnO3 stabilizes the orthorhombic polymorph over the hexagonal. Reactions over the course of 2 weeks yield o-YMnO3 as the majority product at temperatures below 600 °C, which supports an equilibration of cation defects over time. Controlling the composition and structure of these defect-accommodating intermediates provides new strategies for selective synthesis of complex oxides at low temperatures.

Oxygen participation, arising from increased transition metal-oxygen covalency during delithiation, is considered essential for the description of charge compensation in conventional layered oxides. The advent of high-resolution mapping of the O K-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) provides an opportunity to revisit the onset and extent of oxygen participation. Combining RIXS with an array of structural and electronic probes for the family of Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.2-yAlyO2cathodes, we identify common charge compensation regimes that are assigned to formal transition metal redox (4.25 V). From O K-edge RIXS maps, we find the emergence of a sharp RIXS feature in these systems when approaching full delithiation, which has previously been associated with lattice oxidized oxygen in alkali-rich systems. The lack of transition metal redox signatures and strong covalency at these high degrees of delithiation suggest this RIXS feature is similarly attributed to lattice oxygen charge compensation as in the alkali-rich systems. The RIXS feature's evolution with state of charge in conventional layered oxides is evidence that this feature reflects the depopulation of occupied O 2p states associated with oxygen participation.

A key requirement for achieving high-energy density in solid-state batteries is highly efficient cycling of an alkali metal anode in a safe manner. Herein, we combine first-principles calculations and experimental characterizations to identify a protective hydrate coating for Na3SbS4 that leads to a passivating interface and greatly enhanced stability. The buried interface is characterized using post-operando synchrotron X-ray depth profiling. This finding identifies hydrates as promising for improving the metal/electrolyte interfacial stability and suggests a general strategy for interface design.

By analysing X-ray pair distribution function data using a multivariate statistical approach, we isolate the cation solvation structure for monovalent (Li(+)/Na(+)/K(+)) and multivalent (Mg(2+)/Ca(2+)/Zn(2+)) electrolytes based on TFSI salts in diglyme. Parallel molecular dynamics simulations provide enhanced structural details. The data suggest that contact ion-pairs are a common feature in multivalent electrolytes.

The conversion reactions of pure NiF2 and the NiO-doped NiF2-C composite (NiO-NiF2-C) were investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. The enhanced electronic conductivity of NiO-NiF2-C is associated with a significant improvement in the reversibility of the conversion reaction compared to pure NiF2. Different evolutions of the size distributions of the Ni nanoparticles formed during discharge were observed. While a bimodal nanoparticle size distribution was maintained for NiO-NiF2-C following the 1st and 2nd discharge, for pure NiF2 only smaller nanoparticles (∼14 Å) remained following the 2nd discharge. We postulate that the solid electrolyte interphase formed upon the 1st discharge at large overpotential retards the growth of metallic Ni leading to formation of smaller Ni particles during the 2nd discharge. In contrast, the NiO doping and the carbon layer covering the NiO-NiF2-C possibly facilitate the conversion process on the surface preserving the reaction kinetics upon the 2nd discharge. Based on the electronic conductivity and surface properties, the resulting size of the Ni nanoparticles is associated with the conversion kinetics and consequently the cyclability.
