Recent results in the theory and application of Newton-Puiseux expansions, i.e. fractional power series solutions of equations, suggest further developments within a more abstract algebraic-geometric framework, involving in particular the theory of toric varieties and ideals. Here, we present a number of such developments, especially in relation to the equations of van der Pol, Riccati, and Schr\"{o}dinger. Some pure mathematical concepts we are led to are Graver, Gr\"{o}bner, lattice and circuit bases, combinatorial geometry and differential algebra, and algebraic-differential equations. Two techniques are coordinated: classical dimensional analysis (DA) in applied mathematics and science, and a polynomial and differential-polynomial formulation of asymptotic expansions, referred to here as Newton-Puiseux (NP) expansions. The latter leads to power series with rational exponents, which depend on the choice of the dominant part of the equations, often referred to as the method of "dominant balance". The paper shows, using a new approach to DA based on toric ideals, how dimensionally homogeneous equations may best be non-dimensionalised, and then, with examples involving differential equations, uses recent work on NP expansions to show how non-dimensional parameters affect the results. Our approach finds a natural home within computational algebraic geometry, i.e. at the interface of abstract and algorithmic mathematics.

Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
Context. CM-like asteroids (Ch and Cgh classes) are a major population within the broader C-complex, encompassing about 10% of the mass of the main asteroid belt. Their internal structure has been predicted to be homogeneous, based on their compositional similarity as inferred from spectroscopy (Vernazza et al., 2016, AJ 152, 154) and numerical modeling of their early thermal evolution (Bland & Travis, 2017, Sci. Adv. 3, e1602514). Aims. Here we aim to test this hypothesis by deriving the density of the CM-like asteroid (41) Daphne from detailed modeling of its shape and the orbit of its small satellite. Methods. We observed Daphne and its satellite within our imaging survey with the Very Large Telescope extreme adaptive-optics SPHERE/ZIMPOL camera (ID 199.C-0074, PI P. Vernazza) and complemented this data set with earlier Keck/NIRC2 and VLT/NACO observations. We analyzed the dynamics of the satellite with our Genoid meta-heuristic algorithm. Combining our high-angular resolution images with optical lightcurves and stellar occultations, we determine the spin period, orientation, and 3-D shape, using our ADAM shape modeling algorithm. Results. The satellite orbits Daphne on an equatorial, quasi-circular, prograde orbit, like the satellites of many other large main-belt asteroids. The shape model of Daphne reveals several large flat areas that could be large impact craters. The mass determined from this orbit combined with the volume computed from the shape model implies a density for Daphne of 1.77+/-0.26 g/cm3 (3 {\sigma}). This density is consistent with a primordial CM-like homogeneous internal structure with some level of macroporosity (~17%). Conclusions. Based on our analysis of the density of Daphne and 75 other Ch/Cgh-type asteroids gathered from the literature, we conclude that the primordial internal structure of the CM parent bodies was homogeneous.

Objective: Establish suitable frequency spacing and demodulation steps to use when extracting impedance changes from frequency division multiplexed (FDM) carrier signals in peripheral nerve. Approach: Experiments were performed in-vitro on cadavers immediately following euthanasia. Neural activity was evoked via stimulation of nerves in the hind paw, while carrier signals were injected, and recordings obtained, with a dual ring nerve cuff implanted on the sciatic nerve. Frequency analysis of recorded compound action potentials (CAPs) and extracted impedance changes, with the latter obtained using established demodulation methods, were used to determine suitable frequency spacing of carrier signals, and bandpass filter (BPF) bandwidth and order, for a frequency multiplexed signal. Main results: CAPs and impedance changes were dominant in the frequency band 200 to 500 Hz and 100 to 200 Hz, respectively. A Tukey window was introduced to remove ringing from Gibbs phenomena. A +/- 750 Hz BPF bandwidth was selected to encompass 99.99 % of the frequency power of the impedance change. Modelling predicted a minimum BPF order of 16 for 2 kHz spacing, and 10 for 4 kHz spacing, were required to avoid ringing from the neighbouring carrier signal, while FDM experiments verified BPF orders of 12 and 8, respectively, were required. With a notch filter centred on the neighbouring signal, a BPF order of at least 6 or 4 was required for 2 and 4 kHz, respectively. Significance: The results establish drive frequency spacing and demodulation settings for use in FDM electrical impedance tomography (EIT) experiments, as well as a framework for their selection, and, for the first time, demonstrates the viability of FDM-EIT of neural activity on peripheral nerve, which will be a central aspect of future real-time neural-EIT systems and EIT-based neural prosthetics interfaces., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

NEURAL transmission ,PROTEIN kinases ,NEURONS ,HIPPOCAMPUS (Brain) ,ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY ,ENTORHINAL cortex - Abstract
Estrogens are believed to modulate cognitive functions in part through the modulation of synaptic transmission in the cortex and hippocampus. Administration of 17β‐estradiol (E2) can rapidly enhance excitatory synaptic transmission in the hippocampus and facilitate excitatory synaptic transmission in rat lateral entorhinal cortex via activation of the G protein‐coupled estrogen receptor‐1 (GPER1). To assess the mechanisms through which GPER1 activation facilitates synaptic transmission, we assessed the effects of acute 10 nM E2 administration on pharmacologically isolated evoked excitatory and inhibitory synaptic currents in layer II/III entorhinal neurons. Female Long‐Evans rats were ovariectomized between postnatal day (PD) 63 and 74 and implanted with a subdermal E2 capsule to maintain continuous low levels of E2. Electrophysiological recordings were obtained between 7 and 20 days after ovariectomy. Application of E2 for 20 min did not significantly affect AMPA or NMDA receptor‐mediated excitatory synaptic currents. However, GABA receptor‐mediated inhibitory synaptic currents (IPSCs) were markedly reduced by E2 and returned towards baseline levels during the 20‐min washout period. The inhibition of GABA‐mediated IPSCs was blocked in the presence of the GPER1 receptor antagonist G15. GPER1 can modulate protein kinase A (PKA), but blocking PKA with intracellular KT5720 did not prevent the E2‐induced reduction in IPSCs. GPER1 can also stimulate extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK), a negative modulator of GABAA receptors, and blocking activation of ERK with PD90859 prevented the E2‐induced reduction of IPSCs. E2 can therefore result in a rapid GPER1 and ERK signaling‐mediated reduction in GABA‐mediated IPSCs. This provides a novel mechanism through which E2 can rapidly modulate synaptic excitability in entorhinal layer II/III neurons and may also contribute to E2 and ERK‐dependent alterations in synaptic transmission in other brain areas. Although the lymphatic system is clearly linked to the metastasis of most human carcinomas, the mechanisms by which lymphangiogenesis occurs in response to the presence of carcinoma remain unclear. Hierarchical models are presented to investigate the properties of lymphatic vessel production in 2997 fields taken from 20 individuals with invasive carcinoma, 21 individuals with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and 21 controls. Such data demonstrate a high degree of correlation within tumour samples from the same individual. Joint hierarchical models utilising shared random effects are discussed and fitted in a Bayesian framework to allow for the correlation between two key outcome measures: a random cluster size (the number of lymphatic vessels in a tissue sample) and a continuous outcome (vessel size). Results show that invasive carcinoma samples are associated with increased production of smaller and more irregularly-shaped lymphatic vessels and suggest a mechanistic link between carcinoma of the cervix and lymphangiogenesis., Comment: Published at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/15-AOAS867 in the Annals of Applied Statistics (http://www.imstat.org/aoas/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org)

RAYLEIGH scattering , *ACOUSTIC radiators , *PLANE wavefronts , *MACH number , *AEROSPACE planes - Abstract
A technique is developed for determining the sound field scattered by a compact body when it is close enough to an acoustic source to be in its near field. Our approach is based on the fact that large regions of many near fields may be well approximated at each point in space by a subsonic plane wave (also called an inhomogeneous plane wave, or an evanescent wave). Such a wave is defined by the property that in one direction it propagates with subsonic phase speed, while in a perpendicular direction it has exponential amplitude variation. Hence by defining a canonical problem, compact scattering of a subsonic plane wave, and solving it, we are able to give a unified analytical treatment of many near-field scattering problems. Our approach draws on the formulae of Rayleigh scattering (as applied to an incident field with complex wavenumber) and the asymptotic theory of the wave equation. For an arbitrary three-dimensional multipole, we determine in full detail how its subsonic wave structure depends on the spherical harmonic parameters (m,n) , and show that our approach has a very large region of validity. - Abstract
Background: Current management practices and outcomes in weaning from invasive mechanical ventilation are poorly understood. We aimed to describe the epidemiology, management, timings, risk for failure, and outcomes of weaning in patients requiring at least 2 days of invasive mechanical ventilation. Methods: WEAN SAFE was an international, multicentre, prospective, observational cohort study done in 481 intensive care units in 50 countries. Eligible participants were older than 16 years, admitted to a participating intensive care unit, and receiving mechanical ventilation for 2 calendar days or longer. We defined weaning initiation as the first attempt to separate a patient from the ventilator, successful weaning as no reintubation or death within 7 days of extubation, and weaning eligibility criteria based on positive end-expiratory pressure, fractional concentration of oxygen in inspired air, and vasopressors. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients successfully weaned at 90 days. Key secondary outcomes included weaning duration, timing of weaning events, factors associated with weaning delay and weaning failure, and hospital outcomes. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03255109. Findings: Between Oct 4, 2017, and June 25, 2018, 10 232 patients were screened for eligibility, of whom 5869 were enrolled. 4523 (77·1%) patients underwent at least one separation attempt and 3817 (65·0%) patients were successfully weaned from ventilation at day 90. 237 (4·0%) patients were transferred before any separation attempt, 153 (2·6%) were transferred after at least one separation attempt and not successfully weaned, and 1662 (28·3%) died while invasively ventilated. The median time from fulfilling weaning eligibility criteria to first separation attempt was 1 day (IQR 0–4), and 1013 (22·4%) patients had a delay in initiating first separation of 5 or more days. Of the 4523 (77·1%) patients with separation attempts, 2927 (64·7%) had a short wean (≤1 d

With the adaptive optics (AO) system on the 10 m Keck-II telescope, we acquired a high quality set of 84 images at 14 epochs of asteroid (52) Europa on 2005 January 20. The epochs covered its rotation period and, by following its changing shape and orientation on the plane of sky, we obtained its triaxial ellipsoid dimensions and spin pole location. An independent determination from images at three epochs obtained in 2007 is in good agreement with these results. By combining these two data sets, along with a single epoch data set obtained in 2003, we have derived a global fit for (52) Europa of diameters (379x330x249) +/- (16x8x10) km, yielding a volume-equivalent spherical-diameter of 315 +/- 7 km, and a rotational pole within 7 deg of [RA; Dec] = [257,+12] in an Equatorial J2000 reference frame (ECJ2000: 255,+35). Using the average of all mass determinations available forEuropa, we derive a density of 1.5 +/- 0.4, typical of C-type asteroids. Comparing our images with the shape model of Michalowski et al. (A&A 416, 2004), derived from optical lightcurves, illustrates excellent agreement, although several edge features visible in the images are not rendered by the model. We therefore derived a complete 3-D description of Europa's shape using the KOALA algorithm by combining our imaging epochs with 4 stellar occultations and 49 lightcurves. We use this 3-D shape model to assess these departures from ellipsoidal shape. Flat facets (possible giant craters) appear to be less distinct on (52) Europa than on other C-types that have been imaged in detail. We show that fewer giant craters, or smaller craters, is consistent with its expected impact history. Overall, asteroid (52) Europa is still well modeled as a smooth triaxial ellipsoid with dimensions constrained by observations obtained over several apparitions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Icarus

We seek the best size estimates of the asteroid (21) Lutetia, the direction of its spin axis, and its bulk density, assuming its shape is well described by a smooth featureless triaxial ellipsoid, and to evaluate the deviations from this assumption. Methods. We derive these quantities from the outlines of the asteroid in 307 images of its resolved apparent disk obtained with adaptive optics (AO) at Keck II and VLT, and combine these with recent mass determinations to estimate a bulk density. Our best triaxial ellipsoid diameters for Lutetia, based on our AO images alone, are a x b x c = 132 x 101 x 93 km, with uncertainties of 4 x 3 x 13 km including estimated systematics, with a rotational pole within 5 deg. of ECJ2000 [long, lat] = [45, -7], or EQJ2000 [RA, DEC] = [44, +9]. The AO model fit itself has internal precisions of 1 x 1 x 8 km, but it is evident, both from this model derived from limited viewing aspects and the radius vector model given in a companion paper, that Lutetia has significant departures from an idealized ellipsoid. In particular, the long axis may be overestimated from the AO images alone by about 10 km. Therefore, we combine the best aspects of the radius vector and ellipsoid model into a hybrid ellipsoid model, as our final result, of 124 +/- 5 x 101 +/- 4 x 93 +/- 13 km that can be used to estimate volumes, sizes, and projected areas. The adopted pole position is within 5 deg. of [long, lat] = [52, -6] or[RA DEC] = [52, +12]. Using two separately determined masses and the volume of our hybrid model, we estimate a density of 3.5 +/- 1.1 or 4.3 +/- 0.8 g cm-3 . From the density evidence alone, we argue that this favors an enstatite-chondrite composition, although other compositions are formally allowed at the extremes (low-porosity CV/CO carbonaceous chondrite or high-porosity metallic). We discuss this in the context of other evidence., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Aims. We determine the physical properties (spin state and shape) of asteroid (21) Lutetia, target of the ESA Rosetta mission, to help in preparing for observations during the flyby on 2010 July 10 by predicting the orientation of Lutetia as seen from Rosetta. Methods. We use our novel KOALA inversion algorithm to determine the physical properties of asteroids from a combination of optical lightcurves, disk-resolved images, and stellar occultations, although the latter are not available for (21) Lutetia. Results. We find the spin axis of (21) Lutetia to lie within 5 degrees of ({\lambda} = 52 deg., {\beta} = -6 deg.) in Ecliptic J2000 reference frame (equatorial {\alpha} = 52 deg., {\delta} = +12 deg.), and determine an improved sidereal period of 8.168 270 \pm 0.000 001 h. This pole solution implies the southern hemisphere of Lutetia will be in "seasonal" shadow at the time of the flyby. The apparent cross-section of Lutetia is triangular as seen "pole-on" and more rectangular as seen "equator-on". The best-fit model suggests the presence of several concavities. The largest of these is close to the north pole and may be associated with large impacts., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
The asteroid (21) Lutetia is the target of a planned close encounter by the Rosetta spacecraft in July 2010. To prepare for that flyby, Lutetia has been extensively observed by a variety of astronomical facilities. We used the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to determine the albedo of Lutetia over a wide wavelength range, extending from ~150 nm to ~700 nm. Using data from a variety of HST filters and a ground-based visible light spectrum, we employed synthetic photometry techniques to derive absolute fluxes for Lutetia. New results from ground-based measurements of Lutetia's size and shape were used to convert the absolute fluxes into albedos. We present our best model for the spectral energy distribution of Lutetia over the wavelength range 120-800 nm. There appears to be a steep drop in the albedo (by a factor of ~2) for wavelengths shorter than ~300 nm. Nevertheless, the far ultraviolet albedo of Lutetia (~10%) is considerably larger than that of typical C-chondrite material (~4%). The geometric albedo at 550 nm is 16.5 +/- 1%. Lutetia's reflectivity is not consistent with a metal-dominated surface at infrared or radar wavelengths, and its albedo at all wavelengths (UV-visibile-IR-radar) is larger than observed for typical primitive, chondritic material. We derive a relatively high FUV albedo of ~10%, a result that will be tested by observations with the Alice spectrograph during the Rosetta flyby of Lutetia in July 2010., Comment: 14 pages, 2 tables, 8 figures

- Abstract
PURPOSE: Accurate information regarding real-world outcomes after contemporary radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer is important for shared decision-making. Clinically relevant end points at 10 years among men treated within a national health care delivery system were examined. METHODS: National administrative, cancer registry, and electronic health record data were used for patients undergoing definitive radiation therapy with or without concurrent androgen deprivation therapy within the Veterans Health Administration from 2005 to 2015. National Death Index data were used through 2019 for overall and prostate cancer-specific survival and identified date of incident metastatic prostate cancer using a validated natural language processing algorithm. Metastasis-free, prostate cancer-specific, and overall survival using Kaplan-Meier methods were estimated. RESULTS: Among 41,735 men treated with definitive radiation therapy, the median age at diagnosis was 65 years and median follow-up was 8.7 years. Most had intermediate (42%) and high-risk (33%) disease, with 40% receiving androgen deprivation therapy as part of initial therapy. Unadjusted 10-year metastasis-free survival was 96%, 92%, and 80% for low-, intermediate-, and high-risk disease. Similarly, unadjusted 10-year prostate cancer-specific survival was 98%, 97%, and 90% for low-, intermediate-, and high-risk disease. The unadjusted overall survival was lower across increasing disease risk categories at 77%, 71%, and 62% for low-, intermediate-, and high-risk disease (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: These data provide population-based 10-year benchmarks for clinically relevant end points, including metastasis-free survival, among patients with localized prostate cancer undergoing radiation therapy using contemporary techniques. The survival rates for high-risk disease in particular suggest that outcomes have recently improved.

- Abstract
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a rise in emotional problems among adolescents. Improving young people's mental health is a public health priority, and examining protective factors throughout the pandemic can offer insights on targets for prevention. This study aimed to investigate longitudinal trajectories of depressive and anxiety symptoms among a large sample of Australian adolescents and to examine sleep patterns in high- and low-risk trajectories. Methods: This study utilises data from the control group of the “Health4Life” cluster RCT. We used three waves of questionnaire data collected annually (from 2019) from Year 7 students at 71 secondary schools across New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia (N = 2,781, Mage = 12.6, SD = .51; 47% boys and 1.4% ‘prefer not to say’). Adolescents reported on their mental health (i.e., depressive and anxiety symptoms) and sleep (i.e., sleepiness, weekday sleep duration, SOL, WASO, and chronotype). Results: We found four trajectories of depressive symptoms: low-stable (64.3%), average-increasing (19.2%), high-decreasing (7.1%), moderate-increasing (9.4%), and three anxiety symptom trajectories: low-stable (74.8%), average-increasing (11.6%), high-decreasing (13.6%). Adolescents in low-risk trajectories were more likely to be boys and to report shorter SOL and WASO, longer sleep duration, less sleepiness, and earlier chronotype. Where mental health waxed and waned, sleep patterns changed in the same direction. Discussion: This is the first study to thoroughly examine adolescents’ sleep patterns as a protective factor for the development of emotional problems during the pandemic. Healthy sleep was clearly linked to low-risk trajectories, although this association is likely bi-directional.

- Abstract
This report describes the key findings that emerged from the analysis of the studies generated by the Food and Nutrition Security Resilience Programme (FNS-REPRO) in Sudan and from and other relevant sources, and complemented by the findings from the rapid value chain assessments and stories of change undertaken in the target areas. Also subsequent recommendations that emerged from reflecting on these findings in a sensemaking event in June 2022 are included. FNS-REPRO is designed to strengthen the resilience of food systems for food and nutrition security in conflict affected regions in the Horn of Africa and focuses on Somaliland, South Sudan and Sudan. These findings have been summarized and are used as input for the annual sensemaking event in June 2022, during which they were reflected upon by FAO & WUR staff and key stakeholders, as to generate key suggestions for improvement of the program but also of staff and stakeholder to learn lessons and take action within their own sphere of influence and control. The key suggestions for improvement serve as input for the next annual plan of FNS-REPRO and as such influence adaptive programming. They also serve as input for other related issues and activities outside FNS-REPRO.The analysis of these findings and the facilitation of the sensemaking events have been carried out by Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation, Wageningen University and Research, as a key partner forthe FNS-REPRO knowledge agenda.
