London South Bank University (LSBU) are pleased to present a project report for Health Education England on the staffing needs for Children and Young People with a learning disability, mental health problem and challenging behaviours. Many families have complained about poor services. People have told us about: • Poor access and referral to services • A lack of awareness by staff of the things that matter to people with learning disability • Not getting the right support • Having services not near to where we live • People being sent to hospital or long term residential services This project report talks about who are the most suitable staff needed to help to improve services to offer high quality, family centred care packages, working across health and social care services. The aims are to provide the right care for Children and Young People (CYP) closer to their homes and families. The information was collected from looking at published reports and hearing about people’s experiences of service changes taking place today. The report will be shared with the group who will make recommendations for better services to the Government.

Background\ud \ud Psychiatric conditions, notably anxiety, commonly co-occur with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).\ud Method\ud \ud This study investigated self-reported behavioural, cognitive and affective symptoms of social anxiety (SA) in 50 adult males with ASD. Associations between SA, core ASD symptoms and facets of neuropsychological functioning were also examined.\ud Results\ud \ud Twenty-six participants (52%) endorsed levels of SA that exceeded the suggested caseness threshold for social anxiety disorder. Categorical and dimensional data analyses indicated that there were no relationships between SA symptoms, present-state or childhood ASD symptom-severity, or measures of socio-emotional processing in this sample.\ud Conclusions\ud \ud Study findings suggest that severity of SA is not merely a reflection of ASD symptom-severity. Further research is needed to ascertain the prevalence of SA in adult ASD epidemiological samples, and identify causal and maintaining mechanisms for these co-morbid symptoms.

A infecção experimental do Didelphis marsupialis com os agentes da Tristeza Parasitária Bovina, cepa IPV (Chaplin et al. 1987) resultou positiva para Babesia bovis nos quatro animais infectados. Os parasitas foram observados na circulação periférica (0,038%) entre o nono e vigésimo primeiro dia; a temperatura corporal elevou-se até 36,8°C e o tamanho dos eritrócitos reduziu-se para 4 mm. O presente trabalho registra a ocorrencia de Babesia caballi e Babesia equi em 9 de 14 equinos de campo. A tecnica utilizada foi a distensao de gota de coagulo de sangue. A parasitemia nao estava relacionada com a sintomatologia especifica de babesiose. Discute-se a utilizacao desta tecnica no diagnostico laboratorial de hemocitozoarios em equinos.
