We report the in situ control of integrated Kerr nonlinearity through its interplay with the cascaded Pockels nonlinear process. Effective Kerr nonlinearity is tuned over 10 dB dynamic range at single photon level without modifying photonic structures.

We performed the generation and manipulation of the optical high-dimensional hyper-entanglement based on the on-chip reconfigurable Sagnac configuration. Our work provides the critical step for the efficient parallel processing of quantum information with integrated photonics.

Making analogy with atomic physics is a powerful tool for photonic technology, witnessed by the recent development in topological photonics and non-Hermitian photonics based on parity–time symmetry. The Mollow triplet is a prominent atomic effect with both fundamental and technological importance. Here we demonstrate the analog of the Mollow triplet with quantum photonic systems. Photonic entanglement is generated with spontaneous nonlinear processes in dressed photonic modes, which are introduced through coherent multimode coupling. We further demonstrate the possibility of the photonic system to realize different configurations of dressed states, leading to modification of the Mollow triplet. Our work would enable the investigation of complex atomic processes and the realization of unique quantum functionalities based on photonic systems.

The coherent transduction between microwave and optical frequencies is critical to interconnect superconducting quantum processors over long distances. However, it is challenging to establish such a quantum interface with high efficiency and small added noise based on the standard direct conversion scheme. Here, we propose a transduction scheme based on continuous-variable quantum teleportation. Reliable quantum information transmission can be realized with an arbitrarily small cooperativity, in contrast to the direct conversion scheme which requires a large minimum cooperativity. We show that the teleportation-based scheme maintains a significant rate advantage robustly for all values of cooperativity. We further investigate the performance in the transduction of complex quantum states such as cat states and Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill(GKP) states and show that a higher fidelity or success probability can be achieved with the teleportation-based scheme. Squeezed light has evolved into a powerful tool for quantum technology, ranging from quantum enhanced sensing and quantum state engineering based on partial post-selection techniques. The pulsed generation of squeezed light is of particular interest, as it can provide accurate time stamp and physically defined temporal mode, which are highly preferred in complex communication networks and large-scale information processing. However, the multimode feature of pulsed squeezing in conventional single-pass configuration limits the purity of the output state, negatively impacting its application in quantum technology. In this Letter, we propose a new approach to generate pulsed squeezing with high temporal purity. Pulsed squeezing based on parametric down-conversion in photonic cavities is analyzed. We show that the effective mode number of the output squeezed light approaches unity. Such a high-purity squeezed light can be realized with broad parameters and low pump power, providing a robust approach to generate large-scale quantum resource.

We report a field test of distribution and reconfigurable routing of multichannel entangled photons in a quantum network testbed. Nonlocal dispersion cancellation has been leveraged to maintain high-quality entanglement in the quantum network.

We experimentally demonstrate using of adaptive optics to mitigate atmospheric turbulence effects on the distribution of entangled photons over free-space optical links and provide significantly improved photon-counting rates and biphoton correlations.

In this Letter, we propose a new approach to process high-dimensional quantum information encoded in a photon frequency domain. In contrast to previous approaches based on nonlinear optical processes, no active control of photon energy is required. Arbitrary unitary transformation and projection measurement can be realized with passive photonic circuits and time-resolving detection. A systematic circuit design for a quantum frequency comb with arbitrary size has been given. The criteria to verify quantum frequency correlation has been derived. By considering the practical condition of the detector's finite response time, we show that high-fidelity operation can be readily realized with current device performance. This work will pave the way towards scalable and high-fidelity quantum information processing based on high-dimensional frequency encoding.

With the help of quantum key distribution (QKD), two distant peers are able to share information-theoretical secure key bits. Increasing the key rate is ultimately significant for the applications of QKD in the lossy channel. However, it has been proven that there is a fundamental rate-distance limit, called the linear bound, which restricts the performance of all existing repeaterless protocols and realizations. Surprisingly, a recently proposed protocol, called twin-field (TF) QKD, can beat the linear bound with no need for quantum repeaters. Here, we present one of the first implementations of the TF-QKD protocol and demonstrate its advantage of beating the linear bound at a channel distance of 300 km. In our experiment, a modified TF-QKD protocol that does not assume phase postselection is considered, and thus a higher key rate than the original one is expected. After controlling the phase evolution of the twin fields traveling through hundreds of kilometers of optical fibers, the implemented system achieves high-visibility single-photon interference and allows stable and high-rate measurement-device-independent QKD. Our experimental demonstration and results confirm the feasibility of the TF-QKD protocol and its prominent superiority in long-distance key distribution services.

Indistinguishable single photons are key ingredient for a plethora of quantum information processing applications ranging from quantum communications to photonic quantum computing. A mainstream platform to produce indistinguishable single photons over a wide spectral range is based on biphoton generation through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in nonlinear crystals. The purity of the SPDC biphotons, however, is limited by their spectral correlations. Here, we present a design recipe, based on a machine-learning framework, for the engineering of biphoton joint spectrum amplitudes over a wide spectral range. By customizing the poling profile of the KTiOPO$_4$ (KTP) crystal, we show, numerically, that spectral purities of 99.22%, 99.99%, and 99.82% can be achieved, respectively, in the 1310-nm, 1550-nm, and 1600-nm bands after applying a moderate 8-nm filter. The machine-learning framework thus enables the generation of near-indistinguishable single photons over the entire telecommunication band without resorting to KTP crystal's group-velocity-matching wavelength window near 1582 nm.

Second-order optical nonlinearity is widely used for both classical and quantum photonic applications. Due to material dispersion and phase matching requirements, the polarization of optical fields is pre-defined during the fabrication. Only one type of phase matching condition is normally satisfied, and this limits the device flexibility. Here, we demonstrate that phase matching for both type-I and type-II second-order optical nonlinearity can be realized simultaneously in the same waveguide fabricated from thin-film lithium niobate. This is achieved by engineering the geometry dispersion to compensate for the material dispersion and birefringence. The simultaneous realization of both phase matching conditions is verified by the polarization dependence of second-harmonic generation. Correlated photons are also generated through parametric down conversion from the same device. This work provides a novel approach to realize versatile photonic functions with flexible devices.

Among the various versions of the twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) protocol [M.Lucamarini, Z. Yuan, J. Dynes, and A. Shields, Nature (London) 557, 400 (2018)] that can overcome the rate-distance limit, the TF-QKD without phase postselection proposed by Cui et al. [Phys. Rev. Appl. 11, 034053 (2019)] is an elegant TF-QKD that can provide high key rates since the postselection of global phases has been removed. However, the achievable distance of this variant is shorter than that of the original phase-matching QKD [X. Ma, P. Zeng, and H. Zhou, Phys. Rev. X 8, 031043 (2018)]. In this paper, we propose a method for improving its performance by introducing an additional decoy mode. The upper bound of the information leakage can be more tightly estimated; hence, both the key rate and the achievable distance are significantly improved. Interestingly, the operation of the proposed additional decoy mode is the same as that of the code mode; hence, it does not introduce difficulties into the experimental system. Combining the differential-quadrature-phase-shift (DQPS) quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol and the recently proposed round-robin-differential-phase-shift (RRDPS), the round-robin-differential-quadrature-phase-shift (RRDQPS) protocol has been proposed. However, a security proof of the RRDQPS QKD protocol is still missing and its advantage over the original RRDPS protocol is also unknown. Here, we give the security proof of single-photon RRDQPS protocol, by which we clearly show that, if a single photon source is applied, RRDQPS protocol will overwhelm the original RRDPS protocol in terms of tolerable error rate. More interestingly, our proof gives a unified theory covering the well-known Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) protocol and RRDQPS protocol. Thus, it is confirmed that BB84 protocol is indeed a special case of the RRDQPS protocol.

The parameters choosing (such as probabilities of choosing X-basis or Z-basis, intensity of signal state and decoy state, etc.) and system calibrating will be more challenging when the number of users of a measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution(MDI-QKD) network becomes larger. At present, people usually use optimization algorithms to search the best parameters. This method can find the optimized parameters accurately but may cost lots of time and hardware resources. It's a big problem in large scale MDI-QKD network. Here, we present a new method, using Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network(BPNN) to predict, rather than searching the optimized parameters. Compared with optimization algorithms, our BPNN is faster and more lightweight, it can save system resources. Another big problem brought by large scale MDI-QKD network is system recalibration. BPNN can support this work in real time, and it only needs to use some discarded data generated from communication process, rather than require us to add additional devices or scan the system, Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

In this paper, we propose an analytical numerical model to describe the parameters related to capacity factors inspired by renormalization methods in statistical physics and a modified cellular automata model. We demonstrate the validity of our model compared with the simulating results from a cellar automata model in the configuration of this problem. We also address an efficient way to implement numerical computation using our paradigm. Additionally, our work shows an interesting relationship between the statistical scaling and the traffic modelling, which can be discussed and applied in other similar configurations.

Quantum random number generators (QRNGs) play an increasingly important role in cryptography systems. Specifically, QRNG performed in prepare-and-measure scenarios with independent devices has attracted intensive study, since it can be intrinsically loss tolerant and its assumptions on devices seem to be quite natural. However, the estimations of min-entropy given in previous works are not optimal. As a result, the performance of quantum randomness certification in practice is still severely depressed. Here, we present a novel method to estimate the min-entropy through developing a reduced device model and proving its equivalence to the original one. Benefitting from this reduction, we can solve the min-entropy estimation problem using mixed integer programming effectively. Furthermore, we derive an optimal bound of analytic form in the case that constraints are made up of symmetric observed probabilities. Simulation results show that our work gives an optimal solution in this case and brings a significant performance improvement compared to previous works.
