Abstract This study aims to evaluate the biomechanical performance of the Gamma 3 nail with an anti-rotation screw (GNS) and compare it to two established gold-standard methods for treating unstable femoral neck fractures (UFNFs). Synthetic bone models were prepared with Pauwels’ type III osteotomy and an additional posterior wedge. Three different implant configurations were tested: three cannulated crews (3CS) in an inverted triangle configuration, a dynamic hip screw with an anti-rotation screw (DHSS), and GNS. Non-destructive cyclic axial loading was applied at 7° adduction, with 1000 cycles ranging from 100 to 1000 N. Subsequently, a construct failure test was conducted using progressive axial compression, and fracture reduction loss was recorded. The average axial stiffness was 321 ± 52 N/mm for 3CS, 430 ± 71 N/mm for DHSS, and 519 ± 104 N/mm for GNS. Multi-drug resistant bacterial infections pose a significant threat to human health. Thus, the development of effective bactericidal strategies is a pressing concern. In this study, a ternary heterostructure (Zn–CN/P-GO/BiS) comprised of Zn-doped graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4), phosphorous-doped graphene oxide (GO) and bismuth sulphide (Bi2S3) is constructed for efficiently treating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-infected wound. Zn doping-induced defect sites in g-C3N4 results in a reduced band gap (ΔE) and a smaller energy gap (ΔEST) between the singlet state S1 and triplet state T1, which favours two-photon excitation and accelerates electron transfer. Furthermore, the formation of an internal electric field at the ternary heterogeneous interface optimizes the charge transfer pathway, inhibits the recombination of electron-hole pairs, improves the photodynamic effect of g-C3N4, and enhances its catalytic performance. Therefore, the Zn–CN/P-GO/BiS significantly augments the production of reactive oxygen species and heat under 808 nm NIR (0.67 W cm−2) irradiation, leading to the elimination of 99.60% ± 0.07% MRSA within 20 min. Additionally, the release of essential trace elements (Zn and P) promotes wound healing by activating hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) signaling pathways. This work provides unique insight into the rapid antibacterial applications of trace element doping and two-photon excitation.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)-infected chronic osteomyelitis (COM) is one of the most devastating infectious diseases with a high recurrence rate, often leading to amputation and even death. It is incurable by all the current strategies involving the clinical use of radical debridement and systemic intravenous antibiotics. Here, we reported on a microwave (MW)-assisted therapy for COM by constructing a heterojunction formed by flake nanoflower-shaped molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and tubular carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This composite could achieve a combination of MW thermal therapy (MTT) and MW dynamic therapy (MDT) to accurately and rapidly treat COM with deep tissue infection. In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that MoS2/CNTs were effective in non-invasively treating S. aureus-induced COM due to the heat and reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced under MW irradiation. The mechanism of heat and ROS generation was explained by MW network vector analysis, density of states (DOS), oxygen adsorption energy, differential charge and finite element (FEM) under MW irradiation. Since the Fermi layer was mainly contributed by the Mo-4d and C–2P orbitals, MoS2/CNTs could store a large amount of charge and easily release more electrons. In addition, charge accumulation and dissipation motion were strong on the surface of and inside MoS2/CNTs because of electromagnetic hot spots, resulting in the spilling out of a great deal of high-energy electrons. Due to the low oxygen adsorption energy of MoS2/CNTs-O2, these high-energy electrons combined further with the adsorbed oxygen to produce ROS.

Tintinnids (Ciliophora) are important microzooplankton grazers. In the Southern Ocean, they are found in the Antarctic Zone, Polar Front and Subantarctic Zone. The Antarctic Zone encompasses large gyres (Weddell Gyre and Ross Gyre) and the Antarctic Slope Current around the continent. The influence of these water masses on tintinnid communities has not been studied. This study investigated the tintinnid community structure in the Weddell and Cosmonaut seas in the summer of 2022. In the Weddell Gyre, tintinnid abundance was significantly lower in the interior than at the fronts. The dominant species differed between the east and west fronts: the proportion of Codonellopsis gaussi was high at the west front, whilst Laackmanniella naviculaefera, Salpingella sp. and Salpingella faurei showed high abundances at the east front. Tintinnid communities varied from inshore to offshore of the Cosmonaut Sea, possibly because of the influence from the Antarctic Slope Current and Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The Antarctic Slope Current was characterized by the occurrence of Cymatocylis drygalskii, whilst the Antarctic Circumpolar Current was characterized by Codonellopsis glacialis, Cymatocylis convallaria and Cy. calyciformis. We proposed that Cy. drygalskii can be used as an indicator of the Antarctic Slope Current. Moreover, we classify polymorphic C. gaussi into three types, in accordance with their loricae, and report their distribution characteristics in water masses. Our results contribute to a better understanding of tintinnid horizontal distribution in different parts of the Weddell Gyre and water masses and serve as a baseline for future studies of pelagic community responses to climate change in the Southern Ocean.

Abstract Background Activated osteoclasts cause excessive bone resorption, and disrupt bone homeostasis, leading to osteoporosis. The extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling is the classical pathway related to osteoclast differentiation, and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species are closely associated with the differentiation of osteoclasts. Myrislignan (MRL), a natural product derived from nutmeg, has multiple pharmacological activities; however, its therapeutic effect on osteoporosis is unclear. Here, we investigated whether MRL could inhibit osteoclastogenesis and bone mass loss in an ovariectomy mouse model by suppressing mitochondrial function and ERK signaling. Methods Tartrate-resistant and phosphatase (TRAP) and bone resorption assays were performed to observe the effect of MRL on osteoclastogenesis of bone marrow macrophages. MitoSOX RED and tetramethyl rhodamine methyl ester (TMRM) staining was performed to evaluate the inhibitory effect of MRL on mitochondria. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assay was performed to detect whether MRL suppressed the expression of osteoclast-specific genes. The impact of MRL on the protein involved in the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor-κB pathways was evaluated using western blotting. In addition, a specific ERK agonist LM22B-10, was used to revalidate the inhibitory effect of MRL on ERK. Finally, we established an ovariectomy mouse model to assess the therapeutic effect of MRL on osteoporosis in vivo. Results MRL inhibited osteoclast differentiation and the associated bone resorption, by significantly decreasing osteoclastic gene expression. Mechanistically, MRL inhibited the phosphorylation of ERK by suppressing the mitochondrial function, thereby downregulating the nuclear factor of activated T cells 1 (NFATc1) signaling. LM22B-10 treatment further verified the targeted inhibition effect of MRL on ERK. Microscopic computed tomographic and histologic analyses of the tibial tissue sections indicated that ovariectomized mice had lower bone mass and higher expression of ERK compared with normal controls. However, MRL treatment significantly reversed these effects, indicating the anti-osteoporosis effect of MRL. Conclusion We report for the first time that MRL inhibits ERK signaling by suppressing mitochondrial function, thereby ameliorating ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis. Our findings can provide a basis for the development of a novel therapeutic strategy for osteoporosis.

Background: The Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation (PFNA) device is the most commonly used implant to fix unstable femoral trochanteric fractures (UFTFs), but it has a relatively high incidence of complications. Due to this factor, the modified intramedullary nail (MIN) was created to treat patients with UFTFs. The aim was to exhibit the MIN and make a comparison with PFNA and InterTAN using biomechanical methods. Methods: An adult UFTF model was developed using Mimics software. The PFNA, InterTAN nail, and MIN models were drawn referring to the corresponding parameters and installed in the fracture models. Vertical, anteroposterior (AP) bending, and torsion loads of the femoral head were set in advance and loaded onto the fracture models. The value of maximal displacement and von Mises stress was evaluated via finite element analysis (FEA). Results: The MIN model had smaller values for maximal displacement than that of the PFNA model, and the increase in displacement was less pronounced for the MIN compared to PFNA under increasing vertical loads. For the indicator of von Mises stress, the MIN model showed lower stress compared with the PFNA model in vertical loads ranging from 300 N to 2100 N. Except for the maximal stress at implants under AP bending loads, the MIN demonstrated the most superior biomechanical properties under AP bending and torsional loads. Conclusion: The MIN offered obvious advantages in terms of mechanical stability and stress distribution among the three studied implants, providing a promising implant option for patients with UFTFs.

Purpose: Surgical treatment is the main treatment method for femoral intertrochanteric fractures (FIFs), however, there are lots of implant-related complications after surgery. Our team designed a new intramedullary nail (NIN) to manage such fractures. The purpose of this study was to introduce this new implant and compare it with proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) and InterTAN for treating FIFs.Methods: An AO/OTA 31-A1.3 FIF model was built and three fixation models were created via finite element method, comprising PFNA, InterTAN, and the NIN. Vertical, anteroposterior (A-P) bending, and torsional loads were simulated and applied to the three fixation models. Displacement and stress distribution were monitored. In order to compare PFNA and the NIN deeply, finite element testing was repeated for five times in vertical load case.Results: The finite element analysis (FEA) data indicated that the NIN possessed the most outstanding mechanical properties among the three fixation models. The NIN model had lower maximal stress at implants compared to PFNA and InterTAN models under three load conditions. The trend of maximal stress at bones was similar to that of maximal stress at implants. Besides, the NIN model showed smaller maximal displacement compared with PFNA and InterTAN models under vertical, A-P bending, and torsional load cases. The trend for maximal displacement of fracture surface (MDFS) was almost identical with that of maximal displacement. In addition, there was significant difference between the PFNA and NIN groups in vertical load case (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Compared with PFNA and InterTAN, the NIN displayed the best mechanical properties for managing FIFs, including the lowest von Mises stress at implants and bones, and the smallest maximal displacement and MDFS under vertical, A-P bending, and torsional load cases. Therefore, this study might provide a new choice for patients with FIFs.

Abstract The Santos Basin, located in the southeastern waters of Brazil, is a passive continental margin basin with the most abundant deepwater petroleum resources in the world discovered to date. However, few studies have been conducted on the present geothermal fields of the Santos Basin, which severely restricts the oil and gas resource evaluation of the basin. This study first utilizes 35 temperature data from 16 post-salt drilling wells and 370 temperature data from 31 pre-salt drilling wells to calculate the post-salt and pre-salt geothermal gradients and terrestrial heat flows in the Santos Basin. Then, the basin simulation software BasinMod 1D is used to quantitatively evaluate the impacts of salt rock sedimentation on the present geothermal fields and the maturity of pre-salt hydrocarbon source rocks. The results demonstrate that the present post-salt geothermal gradient in the Santos Basin is 2.20–3.97 °C/100 m, with an average value of 2.99 °C /100 m, and the post-salt terrestrial heat flow is 54.00–97.32 mW/m2, with an average value of 73.36 mW/m2, while the present pre-salt geothermal gradient is 2.21–2.95 °C/100 m, with an average value of 2.53 °C/100 m, and the pre-salt terrestrial heat flow is 61.85–82.59 mW/m2, with an average value of 70.69 mW/m2. These values are characteristic of a low-temperature geothermal field in a zone with a stable structure. The sedimentation of the salt rock causes a decrease in the temperature of the pre-salt strata, which inhibits pre-salt hydrocarbon source rock maturity, with an inhibition rate of up to 1.32%. The inhibition degree decreases with increasing salt rock thickness. At the same time, the salt rock thickness is positively correlated with the present surface heat flow. The unique distribution of the salt rock and related salt structures lead to present terrestrial heat flow differences among different structural units in the basin. This study is of great significance for evaluating and exploring the pre-salt oil and gas resources in the Santos Basin.

Developing new photocatalytic materials is one of the most promising strategies to address bacterial infection during wound healing without bacterial drug resistance, but their poor photocatalytic activity ultimately limits their therapeutic efficacy. In this work, a metal–organic framework‐based S‐scheme heterostructure (Ag2S@PB) is prepared to rapidly treat open wounds caused by bacterial infection, which effectively establishes and retains spatially isolated redox centers through an S‐scheme charge‐transfer pathway. Additionally, the formation of an interface electric field and covalent FeS bridge bonding in the heterogeneous interface endows the heterojunction with a much stronger charge separation and transfer capability than bare Ag2S, which significantly enhances the photocatalytic performance and stability, consequently generating more radical oxygen species. Meanwhile, the introduction of Prussian blue greatly improves the photothermal effect of the Ag2S@PB under 808 nm near‐infrared light. Therefore, under illumination for 20 min, the Ag2S@PB shows a desirable antibacterial efficiency of 99.92% against Staphylococcus aureus and 99.86% against Escherichia coli. The in vivo wound repair experiment shows that the Ag2S@PB has good tissue repair effects and can expedite wound healing. This work will provide insights for designing highly efficient photoresponsive materials to treat bacterial wound infections.

The history and results of petroleum exploration in the Santos Basin, Brazil are reviewed. The regularity of hydrocarbon enrichment and the key exploration technologies are summarized and analyzed using the seismic, gravity, magnetic and drilling data. It is proposed that the Santos Basin had a structural pattern of two uplifts and three depressions and the Aram-Uirapuru uplift belt controlled the hydrocarbon accumulation. It is believed that the main hydrocarbon source kitchen in the rift period controlled the hydrocarbon-enriched zones, paleo-structures controlled the scale and quality of lacustrine carbonate reservoirs, and continuous thick salt rocks controlled the hydrocarbon formation and preservation. The process and mechanism of reservoirs being transformed by CO2 charging were revealed. Five key exploration technologies were developed, including the variable-velocity mapping for layer-controlled facies-controlled pre-salt structures, the prediction of lacustrine carbonate reservoirs, the prediction of intrusive/effusive rock distribution, the detection of hydrocarbons in lacustrine carbonates, and the logging identification of supercritical CO2 fluid. These theoretical recognitions and exploration technologies have contributed to the discovery of deep-water super-large reservoirs under CNODC projects in Brazil, and will guide the further exploration of deep-water large reservoirs in the Santos Basin and other similar regions.

Santos Basin is characterized by multiple phases of magmatic events and widespread distribution of igneous rocks, which have significant affect of hydrocarbon accumulation. Taking Block C of Santos Basin as a typical and representative example, this paper focused on the characteristics of igneous rocks and their roles in hydrocarbon accumulation through the analysis of igneous rock petrology, geochronology, petrogeochemistry, and gas isotopes. In Block C, at least two main stages of magma events were developed: Aptian magma (122.8±0.6-110.8±0.6 Ma) and Santonian-Campanian magma (84.2±0.7-77.4±0.4). The Aptian magma is dominated by eruptive rocks and has experienced dozens of eruptions, accompanied by several layers of subvolcanic rocks. In comparison, Santonian-Campanian magma is distributed in a relatively random pattern. The multipulse eruption of Aptian magma formed an igneous rock-coquinas complex of more than 600 meters in thickness, inducing a local paleohigh in Itapema Formation. This directly caused the trap crest to shift and contributed to the development of high-quality carbonate deposition in Barra Velha Formation. Before the eruption of Aptian magma, the north flank of Block C was paleohigh, where a particular scale of microbial carbonate reservoirs was anticipated to develop in the Barra Velha Formation as well. These carbonate reservoirs were favorable for hydrocarbon accumulation. The later Santonian-Campanian intrusions also impact carbonate reservoirs through hydrothermal fluid circulation and contact metamorphism. Meanwhile, a large amount of associated CO2 accumulated in the trap led to a high GOR (gas oil ratio) and high CO2 content and changed the fluid composition through the extraction process.A CO2 gas reservoir with condensed oil was eventually formed in the current crest in Block C, as proven by drilled well A.Another pool with high CO2 content is also expected in its north flank, to be demonstrated in the future.

Abstract Background This paper aimed to propose a modified technique of bone transport. An annular frame combined with a retrograde tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis nail was used in this novel technique for treating large distal tibial periarticular osteomyelitis and associated defects. Methods Our team conducted a retrospective research. Forty-three patients with large distal tibial periarticular bone loss were involved in this study. Sixteen patients were treated using the modified hybrid transport technique (MHT group) while 27 were subjected to traditional bone transport (BT group). The mean bone loss was 7.8 ± 2.4 cm in the MHT group and 7.6 ± 2.6 cm in the BT group. The external fixation index, time in transport frame, self-rating anxiety scale, bone healing results and postoperative complications were recorded. Abstract Though diel variations are geographically widespread phenomena among phytoplankton and zooplankton, knowledge is limited regarding diel variations in planktonic ciliate (microzooplankton) community structure. In this study, we analyzed diel variations in community structure of planktonic ciliates in the northern South China Sea (nSCS) and tropical Western Pacific (tWP). Hydrological characteristics during day and night were slightly different over both the nSCS and tWP, while ciliate average abundance at night was clearly higher than in the day in the upper 200 m. In both the nSCS and tWP, abundance proportions of large size-fraction (> 30 μm) aloricate ciliates at night were higher than in the day. While for tintinnids, abundance proportion of large lorica oral diameter at night were lower than in the day. The relationship between environmental factors and ciliate abundance pointed out that depth and temperature were main factors influencing aloricate ciliate and tintinnid in both day and night. For some dominant tintinnid species, chlorophyll a was another important factor influencing their diel vertical distribution. Our results provide fundamental data for better understanding the mechanisms of planktonic ciliate community diel variation in the tropical Western Pacific Ocean.

Summary: Osteoporosis is a prevalent systemic metabolic disease in modern society, in which patients often suffer from bone loss due to over-activation of osteoclasts. Currently, amelioration of bone loss through modulation of osteoclast activity is a major therapeutic strategy. Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) inhibitor CGK733 (CG) was reported to have a sensitizing impact in treating malignancies. However, its effect on osteoporosis remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of CG on osteoclast differentiation and function, as well as the therapeutic effects of CG on osteoporosis. Our study found that CG inhibits osteoclast differentiation and function. We further found that CG inhibits the activation of NFATc1 and ultimately osteoclast formation by inhibiting RANKL-mediated Ca2+ oscillation and the NF-κB/MAPK signaling pathway. Next, we constructed an ovariectomized mouse model and demonstrated that CG improved bone loss in ovariectomized mice. Therefore, CG may be a potential drug for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Purpose: This study was developed to evaluate the effects of moxibustion on tumor microenvironmental hypoxia in a murine model of Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC). Methods: Twenty-four tumor-bearing mice were randomized into tumor group (T), tumor + cisplatin group (TC), tumor + moxibustion group (TM), and tumor + cisplatin + moxibustion group (TMC) (n = 6/group). Six age-matched C57BL/6 mice were employed as control group (Ctrl). A tumor model was established by implanting LLC cells into the right flank of each mouse. Animals in the TM group received moxibustion treatment at the ST36 (bilateral) and GV4 acupoints on the day of visible tumor formation. Moxibustion treatment was performed every other day for a total of 7 sessions. Animals in the TC group were intraperitoneally injected with cisplatin (3 mg/kg) on day 3 after visible tumor formation, and this treatment was performed every 3 days for 4 times. Animals in the TMC group underwent combined moxibustion and chemotherapy treatment, following the same conditions as outlined above. Following treatment, the concentrations of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), CD31, and Ki67 were measured using ELISA, Western blot, and immunohistochemical staining. Objective This study aimed to compare the clinical effects of using pedicled double‐barrel fibular transplantation (PDBFT) and bone transport (BT) for the treatment of upper tibial osteomyelitis with bone defects. Methods A total of 83 patients with upper tibial osteomyelitis and bone defects were selected and retrospectively studied in Xi'an Hong Hui Hospital from January 2009 to January 2019. There were 52 males and 31 females, aged 19–72 years. The tibial defect range was 5–12 cm. Patients were divided into two groups, including the PDBFT (40 cases) and the BT group (43 cases). All patients were classified according to Cierny–Mader classification, including 48 cases of type III and 35 cases of type IV. Operation time, blood loss and cure time were compared. Ennecking score was used to evaluate limb functions, including pain, activity function, self‐perception, brace use, walking ability, and gait change, while self‐rating anxiety scale (SAS) was used for postoperative mental and psychological status. In addition, complications were recorded. All patients were followed for at least 2 years. SPSS 23.0 software was used to process data. Results There was no significant difference in demographic data between the two groups (p > 0.05). With urban residents’ increasing reliance on metro systems for commuting and other daily activities, extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and flooding impacting the metro system services are becoming increasingly of concern. Plans for such emergency interruptions require a thorough understanding of the potential outcomes on both the system and individual component scales. However, due to the complex dynamics, constraints, and interactions of the elements involved (e.g., disaster, infrastructure, service operation, and travel behavior), there is still no framework that comprehensively evaluates the system performance across different spatiotemporal scales and is flexible enough to handle increasingly detailed travel behavior, transit service, and disaster information data. Built on an agent-based model (ABM) framework, this study adopts a data-driven ABM simulation approach informed by actual metro operation and travel demand data to investigate the impact of flood-induced station closures on travelers as well as the overall system response. A before-after comparison is conducted where the traveler behaviors in disaster scenarios are obtained from a discrete choice model of alternative stations and routes. A case study of the Shanghai Metro is used to demonstrate the ability of the proposed approach in evaluating the impacts of flood-induced station closures on individual traveler behavior under normal operation and a series of water level rise scenarios of up to 5m. It was found that, when the flood-induced station closures only affect a few river-side stations in the city center, the travelers experience only minor disruptions to their trips due to the availability of unaffected stations nearby as a backup. However, as the water level increases and more stations (mainly in the suburban area) are affected, up to 25% of trips are no longer being fulfilled due to the loss of entrances, exits, or transfer links. The system experiences overall less crowdedness in terms of passenger volume and platform waiting time with a few exceptions of increased passenger load due to concentrations of passenger flows to alternative stations under flooding-induced station closures. The proposed approach can be adapted to other disaster scenarios to reveal the disaster impacts on both aggregated and disaggregated levels and guide the design of more spatio- and temporally-targeted emergency plans for metro systems.

Abstract Microwave (MV)‐trigged dynamic therapy based on MV‐responsive materials is promising for treating deep infection diseases that cannot be effectively treated by antibiotics, like life‐threatening osteomyelitis. Surface states of materials affect the generation of free charges under the excitation source with energy less than the band gap, consequently influencing the MV dynamic effects. Herein, an MV responsive system with interface confined 2D metal–organic framework (2D MOF) on oxidized carbon nanotube (CNT) is prepared, in which the ultrasmall Cu‐based 2D MOF possesses sufficient surface/interface defects, endowing the system a large number of surface states. Under MV irradiation, the synthesized CNT‐2D MOF not only efficiently absorbs and converts the microwave into heat for microwaveocaloric therapy (MCT) via enhanced hetero‐interfacial polarization, but also generates excited electrons via surface state for microwave dynamic therapy (MDT). This biocompatible CNT‐2D MOF exhibits highly effective broad‐spectrum antimicrobial activity against seven pathogenic bacteria, including Gram‐negative and Gram‐positive pathogens, under 7 min MV irradiation. And this system is proven to efficiently eradicate Staphylococcus aureus infected rabbit tibia osteomyelitis. Significantly, MV‐excited MCT and MDT of CNT‐CuHHTP developed in this study makes a major step forward in antibiotic‐free MV therapy in deep tissue bacterial infection diseases.

Bacterial infections are a serious public health issue that threatens the lives of patients because of their ability to induce other lethal complications without prompt treatment. Conventional antibiotic therapy can cause bacterial resistance and other adverse effects. It is highly desirable to develop effective and antibiotic‐independent therapeutic strategies to treat various kinds of bacterial infections. Herein, sonodynamic‐enhanced piezoelectric materials MoS2 and Cu2Oheterostructure that responds to exogenous ultrasound (US) and generates reactive oxygen for Staphylococcus aureus elimination are developed. It is shown in the results that the polariton charge induced by piezoelectric MoS2 nanosheets under US irradiation can accelerate the transfer of electric in Cu2O. Furthermore, US irradiation induces valence conversion from Cu(I) to Cu(II), which can accelerate glutathione oxidation significantly and destroy the bacterial antioxidant defense system. Hence, the as‐prepared piezoelectric‐enhanced sonosensitizer possesses a highly effective antibacterial efficacy of 99.85% against S. aureus under US irradiation for 20 min, with good biocompatibility. Herein, effective ultrasonic piezocatalytic therapy is offered through constructing heterogeneous interfaces with ultrasonic piezoelectric response.

This study aimed to evaluate the long-term service performance of modified municipal dewatered sludge as a landfill liner barrier. Industrial calcium-containing solid waste was used as a modified material for sludge. The shear strength parameters (cohesion c, friction angle φ), compressive strength, and hydraulic conductivity of the modified sludge were studied using direct shear, uniaxial compression, and penetration tests. The leaching toxicity, hydration products, and microscopic morphology of the modified sludge were determined using atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersion spectroscopy. The corrosion mechanisms of the landfill leachate and acid-base chemical solution on the modified sludge liner barrier were revealed. Under the long-term corrosive environment of the landfill leachate and acid-base chemical solution, the shear strength parameters, i.e., cohesion (c) and friction angle (φ) had values in the ranges of 0.51 − 3.79 MPa and 6.52 − 37.58° of the modified sludge, respectively. The uniaxial compressive strength reached 2.70 − 22.92 MPa, and the permeability coefficient ranged from 0.12 × 10−8 to 3.97 × 10−8 cm/s. After long-term corrosion by landfill leachate and an acid-base chemical solution, the modified sludge liner barrier still had significant bearing capacity and water-blocking properties. Under leachate corrosion, sulfate corrosion (such as ettringite and thaumasite formation) occurred, the modified sludge and some structures were damaged. Under an acidic chemical corrosion solution, alkaline substances, such as calcium hydroxide with hydrogen ions, underwent solvent-out crystallization and chemical dissolution reactions, which caused the decomposition of hydrated gel products such as C–S–H inside the specimen. Under alkaline chemical solution corrosion, the active components in the modified sludge underwent a hydration reaction to form ettringite, C–S–H, etc.

Tamm-plasmon-polariton (TPP) has strong light absorption and polarization-independence, shows potential application in the optical biosensors. However, with the weak field confinement of the distributed Bragg reflector (DBR), the sensitivity enhancement of TPP biosensors require defect layers or nano-materials with strong light absorption. Herein, we propose a novel TPP biosensor by using one-dimensional topological photonic crystal (1D TPhC) as DBR, the working wavelength is 633 nm, where 1D TPhC is composed by two 1D photonic crystals (1D PhCs) with different topological invariants. The strong field confinement of 1D TPhC is employed to improve the light absorption of TPP, and enhance the susceptibility of the biosensor to the analyte. Since TPP is polarization-independent, it has superior sensing performance in both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization modes. The sensitivity and Figure of Merit (FOM) are 2.6553 × 104 RIU−1 (1.3349 × 104 RIU−1) and 3.1238 × 107 RIU−1deg−1 (6.6745 × 108 RIU−1deg−1) for TM(TE)-polarization mode. The proposed TPP biosensor without defect layer, doesn’t need consider the thickness and position of the sensing medium layer, shows high operational flexibility. Besides, with the protection of the topological edge state, this biosensor has high tolerance to the thickness deviations, which can reduce the requirements on fabrication. It is anticipated that the proposed TPP biosensor has excellent sensing performances, possesses great potentials in environmental monitoring, biological detection, etc.

Community and household vulnerability to natural hazards, e.g., earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods, is a concern that transcends geographic and economic boundaries. Despite the abundance of research in this field, most existing methods remain inefficient and face the challenge of data scarcity. By formulating and investigating the correlation between the household vulnerability and street view images of buildings, this research seeks to bridge the knowledge gap to enable an efficient assessment. Especially in developing countries, the widespread prevalence of outdated or inadequately enforced building codes poses a significant challenge. Consequently, a considerable portion of the housing stock in these regions fails to meet acceptable standards, rendering it highly vulnerable to natural hazards and climate-related events. Evaluating housing quality is crucial for informing public policies and private investments. However, current assessment methods are often time-consuming and costly. To address this issue, we propose the development of a rapid and reliable evaluation framework that is also cost-efficient. The framework employs a low-cost street view imagery procedure combined with deep learning to automatically extract building information to assist in identifying housing characteristics. We then test its potential for scalability and higher-level reliability. More importantly, we aim to quantify household vulnerability based on street view imagery. Household vulnerability is typically assessed through traditional means like surveys or census data; however, these sources can be costly and may not reflect the most current information. We have developed an index that effectively captures the most detailed data available at both the housing unit and household level. This index serves as a comprehensive representation, enabling us to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing our model’s predictions to estimate vulnerability conditions in specific areas while optimizing costs. Through latent class clustering and ANOVA analysis, we have discovered a strong correlation between the predictions derived from the images and the household vulnerability index. This correlation will potentially enable large-scale, cost-effective evaluation of household vulnerability using only street view images.

Open wounds are prone to infection and difficult to heal, which even threatens the life of patients because bacterial infections can induce other lethal complications without prompt treatment. The commonly used antibiotics treatment for bacterial infections has been reported to cause globally bacterial resistance and even the occurrence of superbacteria. The highly effective and antibiotic-independent therapeutic strategies are urgently needed for treating various kinds of bacteria-infected diseases. In this work, we synthesized an eco-friendly nanohybrid material (ZnDMZ) consisting of a kind of biodegradable metal organic framework (MOF, ZIF-8) combined with Zn-doped MoS2 (Zn–MoS2) nanosheets, which exhibited great ability to kill bacteria and promote the healing of bacteria-infected wounds under 660 nm light irradiation. The underlying mechanism is that besides the local hyperthermia, the nanohybrid material exhibits enhanced photocatalytic performance than single component in it, i.e., it can also be excited by 660 nm light to produce more oxygen radical species (ROS) due to the following factors. On one hand, the Zn doping can reduce the work function and the band gap of MoS2, which promotes the movement of photoexcited electrons to the surface of the material. On the other hand, the combination between Zn–MoS2 and MOF induces the formation of a built-in electric field due to their work function difference, thus accelerating the separation of photoexcited electron-hole pairs. Because of the synergy of photocatalytic effect, photothermal effect and the released Zn ions, the synthesized ZnDMZ possessed a highly effective antibacterial efficacy of 99.9% against Staphylococcus aureus under 660 nm light irradiation for 20 min without cytotoxicity. In vivo tests showed that this nanohybrid material promoted the wound healing due to the released Zn ions. This nanohybrid will be promising for rapid and portable treatment of bacteria-infected open wounds in pathogenic bacteria contaminated environments.

Marine plankton have different biogeographical distribution patterns. However, it is not clear how the entire plankton assemblage is composed of these species with distinct biogeographical patterns. Tintinnina (tintinnids) is single-celled planktonic protozoa commonly used as model organisms in planktonic studies. In this research, we investigated the organization of Tintinnina assemblages along the Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) spanning over 90 degrees of latitude during the 29th AMT cruise (2019). Tintinnina with high frequency of occurrence was classified into four biogeographic distribution patterns (equatorial, gyre, frontal, and deep Chl a maximum) according to their vertical and horizontal distribution. All species falling within each distribution pattern formed a sub-assemblage. Equatorial sub-assemblage dominated in upper waters of the equatorial zone and gyre centres. Equatorial and frontal sub-assemblages co-dominated in upper waters of the frontal zones. Deep Chlorophyll a maximum Layer (DCM) sub-assemblage dominated in the DCM waters. Some Tintinnina species with high abundance could be used as indicator species of sub-assemblages. The Tintinnina assemblages in the northern and southern hemispheres exhibited asymmetry in terms of species composition. The latitudinal gradient of Tintinnina species richness was bimodal, which was shaped by the superposition of the species number of the four sub-assemblages with latitude. The result of this study contributes to the understanding of Tintinnina assemblage in the equatorial zone and subtropical gyres of the Pacific and Indian Ocean. It is also valuable for predicting the influence of global warming on changes in Tintinnina distribution and species richness.

Abstract Functionalized self-assembling peptides, which display functional growth-factor bioactivity, can be designed by connecting the C-terminus of a pure self-assembling peptide with a short functional motif. In this study, we designed a novel functionalized peptide (RADA16-SNVI) in which an SNVI motif with hBMP-7 activity was conjugated onto the C-terminus of the RADA16 peptide via solid-phase synthesis. A mix of RADA16-SNVI and RADA16 solutions was used to create a functionalized peptide nanofiber scaffold (SNVI-RADA16). The hydrogels were analyzed by atomic force microscopy, circular dichroism, and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the SNVI-RADA16 solution effectively formed hydrogel. Next, we seeded the SNVI-RADA16 scaffold with adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and investigated whether it displayed biological properties of nucleus pulposus tissue. SNVI-RADA16 displayed good biocompatibility with the ADSCs and induced their expression. In order to improve the overall performance of edge plates such as bulldozer blades, composition and heat treatment processes were optimized on the martensitic wear-resistant steel grade 400 HB. Steel billets were first obtained through smelting in a state of hot rolling, followed by quenching and tempering to obtained wear-resistant steel (HB400). Then, HB400 was subjected to metallographic observation, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) testing, and transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization and property testing. The results showed that HB400 exhibited microstructural refinement, characterized by narrower martensite laths and finer grains. The EBSD results indicated a uniform microstructure with a low content of the residual austenite (0.5%), indicating good hardenability. TEM observation of the martensite matrix revealed the presence of substructures, i.e., numerous dislocations in martensite laths. The average Rockwell hardness (HRC) of HB400 was 46.3, and the average Brinell hardness (HB) was 402. A mechanical properties test demonstrated comprehensive properties, which showed that the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of HB400 were 1495 MPa and 1345 MPa, respectively, with a relative elongation of 12%. Friction and wear experiments showed that the friction coefficient and wear rate in reciprocating mode decreased by 16.1% and 45.4%, respectively, while in rotating mode, they decreased by 27.6% and 2.1%, respectively, as the load increased from 100N to 300N. According to the wear morphology, the main wear mechanisms were identified as adhesive wear, abrasive wear, and oxidative wear. The lubricating effect of the oxide layer generated by wear was identified as the primary reason for the reduction in the friction coefficient. The relationship between microstructures and properties was discussed based on grain refinement strengthening and dislocation strengthening.

To enhance the efficiency of mechanical automatic picking of cherry tomatoes in a precision agriculture environment, this study proposes an improved target detection algorithm based on YOLOv5n. The improvement steps are as follows: First, the K-means++ clustering algorithm is utilized to update the scale and aspect ratio of the anchor box, adapting it to the shape characteristics of cherry tomatoes. Secondly, the coordinate attention (CA) mechanism is introduced to expand the receptive field range and reduce interference from branches, dead leaves, and other backgrounds in the recognition of cherry tomato maturity. Next, the traditional loss function is replaced by the bounding box regression loss with dynamic focusing mechanism (WIoU) loss function. The outlier degree and dynamic nonmonotonic focusing mechanism are introduced to address the boundary box regression balance problem between high-quality and low-quality data. This research employs a self-built cherry tomato dataset to train the target detection algorithms before and after the improvements. Comparative experiments are conducted with YOLO series algorithms. The experimental results indicate that the improved model has achieved a 1.4% increase in both precision and recall compared to the previous model. It achieves an average accuracy mAP of 95.2%, an average detection time of 5.3 ms, and a weight file size of only 4.4 MB. These results demonstrate that the model fulfills the requirements for real-time detection and lightweight applications. It is highly suitable for deployment in embedded systems and mobile devices. The improved model presented in this paper enables real-time target recognition and maturity detection for cherry tomatoes. It provides rapid and accurate target recognition guidance for achieving mechanical automatic picking of cherry tomatoes.

The rapid expansion of nuclear technology across various sectors due to global economic growth has led to a substantial rise in the transportation of radioactive materials. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) estimates that approximately 20 million shipments of radioactive materials occur annually. In this context, ensuring the safety and security of radioactive material transportation is of significant importance. IAEA’s “Security of Radioactive Materials in Transport” (Nuclear Security Series No. 9-G) mandates that an effective transport security system should provide immediate detection of any unauthorized removal of the packages. In the present study, an innovative Adam-optimized BP neural network model is developed for detecting unauthorized movements of radioactive material packages. To analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, numerous experiments were conducted. The results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a 99.17% accuracy rate in detecting unauthorized movements of radioactive materials, with a missed alarm rate of 0.72% and a false alarm rate of 0.1%. This method also enables real-time detection of unauthorized removal of radioactive materials and effectively enhances the security of radioactive materials during transport to reduce the risks of theft, loss, diversion, or sabotage.

The utilization of 3-dimensional point cloud technology for non-invasive measurement of plant phenotypic parameters can furnish important data for plant breeding, agricultural production, and diverse research applications. Nevertheless, the utilization of depth sensors and other tools for capturing plant point clouds often results in missing and incomplete data due to the limitations of 2.5D imaging features and leaf occlusion. This drawback obstructed the accurate extraction of phenotypic parameters. Hence, this study presented a solution for incomplete flowering Chinese Cabbage point clouds using Point Fractal Network-based techniques. The study performed experiments on flowering Chinese Cabbage by constructing a point cloud dataset of their leaves and training the network. The findings demonstrated that our network is stable and robust, as it can effectively complete diverse leaf point cloud morphologies, missing ratios, and multi-missing scenarios. A novel framework is presented for 3D plant reconstruction using a single-view RGB-D (Red, Green, Blue and Depth) image. This method leveraged deep learning to complete localized incomplete leaf point clouds acquired by RGB-D cameras under occlusion conditions. Additionally, the extracted leaf area parameters, based on triangular mesh, were compared with the measured values. The outcomes revealed that prior to the point cloud completion, the R2 value of the flowering Chinese Cabbage’s estimated leaf area (in comparison to the standard reference value) was 0.9162. The root mean square error (RMSE) was 15.88 cm2, and the average relative error was 22.11%. However, post-completion, the estimated value of leaf area witnessed a significant improvement, with an R2 of 0.9637, an RMSE of 6.79 cm2, and average relative error of 8.82%. The accuracy of estimating the phenotypic parameters has been enhanced significantly, enabling efficient retrieval of such parameters. This development offers a fresh perspective for non-destructive identification of plant phenotypes.

Jiaozhou Bay is a representative temperate coastal ecosystem and connects with the Yellow Sea by a narrow mouth. The eastern part of the Bay is more polluted than the western and outer parts due to the combined effects of urban sewage and weak water exchange between different water masses. However, the previous results from microscopy analyses did not show any distinct distribution pattern of planktonic ciliates, which are generally considered good bioindicators along environmental gradients. We hypothesize that ciliates may respond to environmental stress by regulating the community of rare taxa, which was not uncovered by morphological methods. The diversity and distribution patterns of planktonic ciliate communities were investigated through high-throughput DNA sequencing from 13 stations in the eastern, western and outer parts of Jiaozhou Bay. The alpha diversity indices showed an increasing trend from the east Bay to the west Bay to the outer Bay. Significant differences in planktonic ciliate communities from different zones of the Bay were mainly attributed to rare rather than abundant taxa. Correlation network analysis revealed that the rare taxa generally have positive correlations with other rare ones, while more negative correlations were found among abundant taxa. We further revealed the distributions of three dominant genera (Stenosemella, Tintinnopsis, and Strombidium) were significantly correlated with environmental variables, suggesting that they might be used as ecological indicators. Our results elucidate the bioindicator potential of ciliate along environmental gradients in a semi-enclosed bay.

Planktonic ciliates are an important component of microzooplankton, but there is limited understanding of their responses to changing environmental conditions in the Pacific Arctic Region. We investigated the variations of ciliate community structure and their relationships with environmental features in the Pacific Arctic Region in the summer of 2016 and 2019. The Pacific water was warmer and more saline in 2019 than in 2016. The abundance and biomass of total ciliate and aloricate ciliate were significantly higher in 2019 than those in 2016, while those of tintinnid were significantly lower. The dominant aloricate ciliate changed from large size-fraction (> 30 μm) in 2016 to small size-fraction (10–20 μm) in 2019. More tintinnid species belonging to cosmopolitan genera were found in 2019 than in 2016, and the distribution of tintinnid species (Codonellopsis frigida, Ptychocylis obtusa, and Salpingella sp.1) in 2019 expanded by 5.9, 5.2, and 8.8 degrees further north of where they occurred in 2016. The environmental variables that best-matched tintinnid distributions were temperature and salinity, while the best match for aloricate ciliate distributions was temperature. Therefore, the temperature might play a key role in ciliate distribution. These results provide basic data on the response of the planktonic ciliate community to hydrographic variations and implicate the potential response of microzooplankton to Pacification as rapid warming progresses in the Pacific Arctic Region.

Vortex beams with optical orbital angular momentum have broad prospects in future high-speed and large-capacity optical communication. In this investigation of materials science, we found that low-dimensional materials have feasibility and reliability in the development of optical logic gates in all-optical signal processing and computing technology. We found that spatial self-phase modulation patterns through the MoS2 dispersions can be modulated by the initial intensity, phase, and topological charge of a Gauss vortex superposition interference beam. We utilized these three degrees of freedom as the input signals of the optical logic gate, and the intensity of a selected checkpoint on spatial self-phase modulation patterns as the output signal. By setting appropriate thresholds as logic codes 0 and 1, two sets of novel optical logic gates, including AND, OR, and NOT gates, were implemented. These optical logic gates are expected to have great potential in optical logic operations, all-optical networks, and all-optical signal processing.

E3 ubiquitin ligases play important roles in plant immunity, but their role in soybean has not been investigated previously. Here, we used Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV)-mediated virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) to investigate the function of GmSAUL1 (Senescence-Associated E3 Ubiquitin Ligase 1) homologs in soybean. When two closely related SAUL1 homologs were silenced simultaneously, the soybean plants displayed autoimmune phenotypes, which were significantly alleviated by high temperature, suggesting that GmSAUL1a/1b might be guarded by an R protein. Interestingly, silencing GmSAUL1a/1b resulted in the decreased activation of GmMPK6, but increased activation of GmMPK3 in response to flg22, suggesting that the activation of GmMPK3 is most likely responsible for the activated immunity observed in the GmSAUL1a/1b-silenced plants. Furthermore, we provided evidence that GmSAUL1a is a bona fide E3 ligase. Collectively, our results indicated that GmSAUL1 plays a negative role in regulating cell death and immunity in soybean.

This paper explores the macroscopic permeability characteristics, pore distribution, mineral composition, and microstructure changes in remoulded silty clay under different concentrations and different back pressures through flexible-wall triaxial permeability tests, nuclear magnetic resonance tests, X-ray diffraction tests, and scanning electron microscope tests. The results of the flexible-wall triaxial permeability tests indicate that the hydraulic conductivity of the landfill leachate with different concentrations increases to the peak value in 108-132 h period and then decreases to a stable value in 252–264 h period under the action of different back pressures. The nuclear magnetic resonance tests show that the pore distribution of the remoulded silty clay is macropore after it is corroded by the leachate. Increasing the concentration of landfill leachate and reducing the back pressures can reduce the overall development effect of pores. The X-ray diffraction tests show that the weakly acidic corrosive environment provided by remoulded silty clay and landfill leachate reduce respectively the contents of montmorillonite, muscovite, and illite by 33.52 %, 23.57 % and 63.51 %, while kaolinite and albite increase by 283.40 % and 188.64 %. Finally, scanning electron microscope tests show that the corrosion of landfill leachate and the plugging of organic pollutants in the infiltration process reduce the apparent pore ratio of the microstructure of remoulded silty clay and the hydraulic conductivity gradually decreases.

Information on tintinnid community structure variations in different water masses in the Arctic Basin is scarce. During the summer of 2020, tintinnid diversity and vertical distribution were investigated in the Arctic Ocean. A total of 21 tintinnid species were found in five water masses and each water mass had a unique tintinnid community structure. In the Pacific Summer Water (PSW), Salpingella sp.1 occupied the top abundance proportion (61.8%) and originated from the North Pacific. In the Remnant Winter Water (RWW), Acanthostomella norvegica occupied the top abundance proportion (85.9%) and decreased northward. In the Mixed Layer Water, Pacific Winter Water, and Atlantic-origin Water, Ptychocylis urnula had the highest abundance proportion (67.1, 54.9, and 52.2%, respectively). The high abundance distribution area of Salpingella sp.1 and A. norvegica were separated by the boundary of the Beaufort Gyre and Transpolar Drift. The above species could be indicator species of each water masses. The highest abundance proportion of Salpingella sp.1 contributes 81.9% to the dominance of 12–16 μm lorica oral diameter in the PSW, which indicated that the preferred food items of tintinnid were also getting smaller. The occurrence of North Pacific tintinnid in the PSW might be due to the increasing Pacific Inflow Water. Further studies are needed to explore the lasting period of this species and whether it can establish a local population under rapid Arctic warming progress.

Mesoscale eddies are a common feature of world oceans. However, their influence on microzooplankton has not been well studied. This study investigated the impact of warm eddies (originating from the Kuroshio Current) on planktonic ciliates in the northern South China Sea and the western North Pacific. We found more tintinnid species in warm eddies than in reference areas in both seas. All species categorized as abundant (maximum abundance > 5 ind. L−1 and occurrence frequency > 10%) could be divided into subsurface-peak and surface-peak groups (highest abundance appeared in subsurface and surface layers, respectively). Subsurface-peak tintinnid species vertical distribution together with temperature-salinity-plankton diagrams at each sampling points revealed higher abundance in warm eddies than in reference areas, which suggested that they can act as warm eddy bioindicator species. Surface-peak tintinnid species were mainly distributed in both warm eddy and reference areas, depth and temperature were the main influence factors. The vertical distribution in warm eddies showed a bimodal pattern in both the South China Sea and North Pacific, with abundance peaks in surface and subsurface layers; whereas in reference areas, abundance peaks in surface layers. The average abundance of ciliate and tintinnids in subsurface layers were higher in warm eddies than in reference areas. Our study contributed to a better understanding of the impact of the warm eddy on microzooplankton and tintinnids function as usefully bioindicator species. Further research is needed to fully understand the ecological influence of eddies on the microzooplankton community.

Located from 35° to 45° latitude in both hemispheres, the transition zone is an important region with respect to the planktonic biogeography of the sea. However, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports on the existence of a tintinnid community in the transition zone. In this research, tintinnids along two transects across the North Pacific Transition Zone (NPTZ) were investigated in summer 2016 and 2019. Eighty-three oceanic tintinnid species were identified, 41 of which were defined as common oceanic species. The common oceanic species were further divided into five groups: boreal, warm water type I, warm water type II, transition zone, and cosmopolitan species. Undella californiensis and Undella clevei were transition zone species. Other species, such as Amphorides minor, Dadayiella ganymedes, Dictyocysta mitra, Eutintinnus pacificus, Eutintinnus tubulosus, Protorhabdonella simplex, and Steenstrupiella steenstrupii, were the most abundant in the NPTZ but spread over a much larger distribution region. Species richness showed no obvious increase in the NPTZ. Boreal, transition zone, and warm water communities were divided along the two transects. Tintinnid transition zone community mainly distributed in regions with water temperatures between 15 and 20°C. The tintinnid lorica oral diameter size classes were dominated by the 24–28 μm size class in three communities, but the dominance decreased from 66.26% in the boreal community to 48.85% in the transition zone community and then to 22.72% in the warm water community. Our research confirmed the existence of tintinnid transition zone species and community. The abrupt disappearance of warm water type I species below 15°C suggested that this group could be used as an indicator of the northern boundary of the NPTZ.

Coliform bacteria (CB) can be used as an indicator of seawater quality. Long-term monitoring of seawater quality based on CB abundance is lacking in Jiaozhou Bay. In this study, CB abundance in surface seawater of 12 different stations in Jiaozhou Bay was investigated by culturing method. The results showed that: (1) the abundance of CB showed a decreasing tendency during the investigation. During 2004–2007, 2008–2013, and 2014–2017, the average CB abundance decreased significantly, forming a “three stages phenomenon”; (2) the average CB abundance in the first half of the year was lower than that in the second half; (3) the CB abundance in Jiaozhou Bay was spatially heterogeneous. The maximum average CB abundance was observed in the estuary area, and followed by the bay mouth area, the outer bay area, and the inner bay area. The highest abundance may be associated with sewage discharge related to human activities; (4) the abundance of CB was most positively correlated with the concentration of ammonium salt and nitrate, while most negatively correlated with salinity; (5) the years 2007 (2008) and 2013 (2014) were time points of the “three stages phenomenon.” These time points coincide with environmental governance actions, indicating that the actions have played a prominent role in improving seawater quality. Long-term survey of CB can not only serve as an indicator of seawater quality, but also provide a basis for the development of environmental governance strategies and pollution control.

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) shift-keying (SK), which manifests as the rapid switching of OAM modes, is crucial but severely hampered for lacking effective demodulation techniques in OAM communication. In this paper, we propose and investigate a novel direct-demodulation method for the OAM-SK communication. After passing through a well-designed beam slit, the optical vortex beam will possess varying output energies associated with the OAM modes. Hence, splitting the optical vortex beam into two sub-beams and one of them passing through the slit, we can directly extract the OAM-SK signals from the energy ratios of the two sub-beams. The results show that the bit-error-rate (BER) of demodulated OAM-SK signals can reach 3.7 ×10-3 even under the influence of strong atmospheric turbulence with Cn2 = 3 ×10-12 and misalignment of 1.8 mm. Encoding digital signals to OAM modes and amplitude of optical vortex beams simultaneously, we construct a novel multi-modulation format composed of 16 QAM-OFDM and OAM-SK signals, which is also demodulated with the BER of 10-5 at the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of 18 dB. These demonstrate that the direct-demodulation method provides a feasible way to demodulate OAM-SK signals and may show potential in complex OAM modulation communications.

This article contains supportive data related to a research article entitled “Annual variation of species richness and lorica oral diameter characteristics of tintinnids in a semi-enclosed bay of western Pacific” (Feng et al., 2018) [1]. This article describes long term data of tintinnid assemblages in Jiaozhou Bay, Yellow sea, a semi-enclosed basin ecosystem of western Pacific, from May 2003 to December 2012. We sum up the whole dataset for each year showing tintinnid species occurrence and abundance at each site by date, as well as the photographic documentation of each tintinnid species. Further interpretation and discussion can be found in recently published by Feng et al. in Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science at Science.

This paper studies adaptive transmission in an underwater acoustic (UWA) point-to-point communication system that operates on an epoch-by-epoch basis for a long term. A fixed amount of information bits periodically arrive at the transmitter data queue, and wait for transmission via a number of packets within each epoch. To trade off energy consumption with transmission latency, the transmitter decides the transmission action at the beginning of each epoch, including to transmit or not, and the transmission power and the modulation-and-coding parameters, based on the data queue status and the predicted channel conditions in the current and future epochs. To describe both the fast fading and the large-scale shadowing of UWA channels, the channel within each epoch is characterized by a compound Nakagamilognormal distribution, and the evolution of the distribution parameters is modeled as an unknown Markov process. Given that the channel can only be observed during active transmissions, we formulate the adaptive transmission problem as a partially observable Markov decision process, and develop an online algorithm in a model-based reinforcement learning framework. The algorithm recursively estimates the channel model parameters, tracks the channel dynamics, and computes the optimal transmission action that minimizes a long-term system cost. Emulated results based on channel measurements from two-field experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves decent performance relative to a benchmark method that assumes perfect and non-causal channel knowledge.

The development of optical systems is heading to multi-branch circuit design and miniaturization. A beam splitter is a common device for dividing an incident beam into two separate beams. Conventional beam splitters are constructed using coated prisms or glass plate. Their bulky size, right-angled output direction, and fixed splitting ratio greatly limit the design of optical arrangement and also hinder the system integration. Here, an all-dielectric metasurface composed of symmetric nano-rings as a beam splitter are designed by Finite-Difference Time-Domain method. By changing the inner and outer radiuses of the nano-rings, the wavefront phase of the emergence beam can be adjusted to form a phase gradient, and the incident beam of arbitrary polarization is divided into two beams according to the designed transmittance and angle. The initial phase of the emergence beam can be changed by adjusting the refractive index of the substrate or adding the silicon film to the substrate, and the splitting ratio can be adjusted from 0.5:1 to 1:1. The simulation demonstrates that the metasurface-based beam splitter is independent of polarization and the power efficiency is over 92% with a compact area of 33.6 μm × 33.6 μm. This compact metasurface-based beam splitter has promising potential for enabling new types of compact optical systems and advancing metasurface-based functional integrated photonic applications.

This work studies online learning-based trajectory planning for multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to estimate a water parameter field of interest in the under-ice environment. A centralized system is considered, where several fixed access points on the ice layer are introduced as gateways for communications between the AUVs and a remote data fusion center. We model the water parameter field of interest as a Gaussian process with unknown hyper-parameters. The AUV trajectories for sampling are determined on an epoch-by-epoch basis. At the end of each epoch, the access points relay the observed field samples from all the AUVs to the fusion center, which computes the posterior distribution of the field based on the Gaussian process regression and estimates the field hyper-parameters. The optimal trajectories of all the AUVs in the next epoch are determined to maximize a long-term reward that is defined based on the field uncertainty reduction and the AUV mobility cost, subject to the kinematics constraint, the communication constraint and the sensing area constraint. We formulate the adaptive trajectory planning problem as a Markov decision process (MDP). A reinforcement learning-based online learning algorithm is designed to determine the optimal AUV trajectories in a constrained continuous space. Simulation results show that the proposed learning-based trajectory planning algorithm has performance similar to a benchmark method that assumes perfect knowledge of the field hyper-parameters.

Based on the reservoir characteristics of individual wells, the combined main controlling factor of fracture-vug reservoir and reservoir space synthesized modeling was adopted to establish geological models for the Ordovician reservoirs in the northern slope of the Tazhong palaeouplift and the southern area of the Tabei slope. Geological models for six types of wells were established: (1) cavity + fracture-vug controlled by sequence boundary; (2) cavity + fracture-vug on the top of cavity controlled by fractures; (3) cavity in the surface layer + fracture-vug under the cavity controlled by the sequence boundary and faults; (4) single fracture-vug controlled by the sequence boundary and faults; (5) single vug controlled by deep hydrothermal fluids along faults and fractures; (6) single fracture controlled by faults and fractures. Two types of synthesized geological models were established under the tectonic background of cuesta, namely, platform type slope of the Tazhong area and the gentle slope of the Tabei area. Type 1 and 2 reservoirs are common in the Yijianfang-Yingshan Formation of the HA6-Xinken Region, and type 3 and 5 reservoirs are common in the Yingshan Formation of the ZG8-ZG43 Region. A comprehensive evaluation shows that the reservoir of cavity + fracture-vug on the top of cavity controlled by the sequence boundary is the best, followed by cavity + fracture-vug on the top of cavity controlled by faults. So the areas that meet configuration of cavities and fracture-vugs and single vug controlled by deep hydrothermal fluids along faults and fractures are important targets for exploration and development.
