Aging in place has become a popular social policy worldwide. This paper argues that well-being is an important outcome of aging in place, upon which older people develop autonomy and environmental proactivity. The temporal dimension of aging in place highlights development of place attachment, which includes place identity and place dependence. The study explores how older people, who live inhigh-density urban environments, make sense of well-being and place attachment by articulating their daily lives. Community dwelling older people aged 65 and above, who came from neighborhoods with high aging population and residential density but high and low median household incomes, were invited for focus group discussions. Multifaceted meanings of well-being include various dimensions that cover individual-collective and material-spiritual (psychological) construct. Meanings of place attachment include values of, bonding ties to, and memories about places. Three pathways are identified linking place attachment and multifaceted well-being. The study finds that social welfare and material richness are not the only determinants of well-being. Fulfillment of higher psychological needs, such as positive evaluation of life and self-actualization, should be emphasized by which older people can make the most of their life in old age. Rabies is a neglected zoonotic disease that is preventable in humans by appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). However, current PEP relies on polyclonal immune globulin products purified from pooled human (HRIG) or equine (ERIG) plasma that are either in chronic shortage or in association with safety concerns. Here, we present the development of an antibody cocktail, SYN023, made of two novel monoclonal antibodies (MAb) CTB011 and CTB012 that could serve as safer and more cost-effective alternatives to the current RIG products. Both CTB011 and CTB012 are humanized MAbs that bind to non-overlapping epitopes on the rabies virus (RABV) glycoprotein (G) with sub-nanomolar affinities. Sequence analysis revealed that many of the critical residues in binding are highly conserved across different species of lyssaviruses. When combined at a 1:1 ratio, CTB011/CTB012 exhibited neutralization capabilities equivalent or superior to HRIG against 10 North American street RABV isolates in vitro and 15 prevalent Chinese RABV strains in animal models. Finally, SYN023, at a dosage of 0.03 mg/kg, was able to offer the same degree of protection as standard HRIG administration (20 IU/kg) in Syrian hamsters challenged with a highly virulent bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) RABV variant. This paper expands the focal point of glocalization to the non-western context, and revisits glocalization in light of the promulgation of an international policy regime. Particularly it examines how the politics of scale in various contexts assists local pragmatic exercises and institutional organizations in building up an age-friendly city (AFC). The functioning mechanisms of glocalization are conceptualized through a triadic framework incorporating structure (mode of local governance), agents, and strategies. The empirical cases examine how AFC has been promoted in Chiayi City of Taiwan and in Hong Kong, the former two Tiger economies. Drawing on a comparative analysis of the two cases, the paper presents three major findings. Firstly, local policy networks are integral to glocalization in that they govern how different resources (i.e., political commitment, professional knowledge, human resources, communication skills, and financial resources) are synthesized under a local institutional framework. Often local policy networks reveal the fragmentation of resources provided by different stakeholders. Secondly, the case study illustrates two different modes of local governance. The Chiayi case reflects an institutionalized governing framework with both hierarchical coordination between levels of state bureaucracies and the horizontal exchange of information and resources between the state and non-state sectors. Hong Kong reflects a grassroots mode whereby the promotion and implementation of AFC initiatives are prompted among NGOs, charities, district councils, and universities. Both modes reveal pros and cons. Thirdly, academic associations have played a major role in promoting AFC, though the extent to which their advice can shape policy decisions relies much on the discretion and political commitment of district councils. A low-cost terahertz transmitter is proposed by using system-on-package (SoP) heterogeneous system integration. A signal source in 40-nm CMOS is integrated with an antenna array on a Benzocyclobutene carrier through a broadband low-loss terahertz interconnect. The signal source adopting triple-push oscillator topology is able to produce a differential output without any additional balun circuit. Hence, the power consumption and the chip area can be reduced. The antenna array containing 50 patch antennas is differentially excited to give simulated directivity, efficiency, and antenna gain as high as 22.6 dB, 88%, and 22 dBi, respectively, at 335 GHz. The terahertz interconnect employs a resonator coupling technique to provide low-loss and broadband performance while occupying a small area. Measured results show that the proposed terahertz transmitter can work at 338.4 GHz with equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) of 8.0 dBm while consuming only 37.5 mW from a 1-V supply. The measured half-power beam-width can be as narrow as 15.5°. The EIRP can be further raised to 9.5 dBm as the supply V DD is increased to 1.3 V. The CMOS chip only occupies an area as small as 0.028 mm2. All of the design efforts enable the proposed terahertz transmitter to feature in small form factor, low power dissipation, low cost, and high performance. This paper presents a low-cost heterogeneous integration technology combining the previously developed bumpless radio-frequency (RF) system-on-a-package scheme with a special surface cleaning process to assemble a complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor chip with an organic substrate (SU-8/ polydimethylsiloxane) by low-temperature Au–Au thermocompressive bonds (< \200\ ^\circ \C) for flexible wireless microsystem fabrication. The RF performance of -15 dB return loss and -0.25 dB insertion loss at 40 GHz and above 6 MPa bonding strength of a microstrip-to-coplanar-waveguide interconnect transition between the chip and the substrate make the technology practical for flexible wireless microsystem integration. Abstract: This paper presents a novel wafer level fabrication of hermetically sealed microcavity and related micro-to-macro interconnects for silicon-based microfluidic system applications. The interconnects are made of electroless plated Ni and strongly bonded with a micromachined silicon microcavity using Au/Sn bond. The technique has been successfully applied for the microreaction chamber fabrication of a low powered micro-cooler proposed for power management applications in which refrigerating capability and low operating power are essential. Experimental result indicates the metal interconnect is robust enough to stand for at least 100KPa stress. The technology can accompany not only the advantages of low manufacturing cost but also high hermeticity and mechanical reliability. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This letter presents a power consumption reduction scheme of magnetic microactuation using Cu–Ni nanocomposite film which is electroplated in alkaline noncyanide based Ni colloidal copper plating solution at 40 °C. The superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer measurements show that Cu film is modified from diamagnetism to ferromagnetism via the incorporation of Ni ferromagnetic nanoparticles into itself to form a Cu–Ni nanocomposite film. A magnetic microactuator made of the nanocomposite can have about 9% performance improvement in terms of actuation enlargement. Abstract: A derivative of rhodamine 110 has been designed and assessed as a probe for cytochrome P450 activity. This probe is the first to utilize a ‘trimethyl lock’ that is triggered by cleavage of an ether bond. In vitro, fluorescence was manifested by the CYP1A1 isozyme with k cat/K M =8.8×103 M−1 s−1 and K M =0.09μM. In cellulo, the probe revealed the induction of cytochrome P450 activity by the carcinogen 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, and its repression by the chemoprotectant resveratrol. Interactions between protein ligands and receptors play crucial roles in cell-cell signalling. Most of the human cell surface receptors have been identified in the post-Human Genome Project era but many of their corresponding ligands remain unknown. To facilitate the pairing of orphan receptors, 2762 sequences encoding all human single-pass transmembrane proteins were selected for inclusion into a mammalian-cell expression library. This expression library, consisting of all the individual extracellular domains (ECDs), was constructed as a Fab fusion for each protein. In this format, individual ECD can be produced as a soluble protein or displayed on cell surface, depending on the applied heavy-chain Fab configuration. The unique design of the Fab fusion concept used in the library led to not only superior success rate of protein production, but also versatile applications in various high-throughput screening paradigms including protein-protein binding assays as well as cell binding assays, which were not possible for any other existing expression libraries. The protein library was screened against human coagulation factor VIIa (FVIIa), an approved therapeutic for the treatment of hemophilia, for binding partners by AlphaScreen and ForteBio assays. Two previously known physiological ligands of FVIIa, tissue factor (TF) and endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) were identified by both assays. The cell surface displayed library was screened against V-domain Ig suppressor of T-cell activation (VISTA), an important immune-checkpoint regulator. Immunoglobulin superfamily member 11 (IgSF11), a potential target for cancer immunotherapy, was identified as a new and previously undescribed binding partner for VISTA. The specificity of the binding was confirmed and validated by both fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assays in different experimental setups.
