To accurately model the consequences of accidental dust explosions, numerical simulations of the flame propagation process are required. A key parameter in these models is the burning velocity ( ?? ?? ), which represents the consumption rate of the reactants by the flame front. Experiments are therefore needed to determine the burning velocity, and the influence of turbulence on this velocity; as well as to validate these models of flame propagation. In this article, aluminum flame propagation inside a vertical duct with obstacles is studied. The aim of the obstacles is first to increase the turbulence just in front of the flame front, in order to quantify its influence on the burning velocity. The second objective of the implementation of the obstacles is to obtain experimental data in a more complex geometry in order to validate the models. During these experiments, the flame propagation is recorded and the unburned flow velocity is measured using the TR-PIV (Time-Resolved Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. This innovative measurement of the unburned flow velocity is important not only for the accurate determination of the burning velocity, but also to validate these numerical simulations. An increase in the propagation velocity and the burning velocity is observed as the flame propagates toward the obstacles.

The back-reef depressions, or lagoons, of Reunion Island (western Indian Ocean) host a high abundance of organisms living amongst the coral reefs and are critical sites for artisanal fishing, tourism, and shoreline stability for the island. Over time, increasing degradation of Reunionese reefs has been observed due to overexploitation, beach erosion and eutrophication. Efforts to mitigate the impact of these pressures on aquatic organisms include biodiversity surveys primarily performed through visual censuses that can be logistically complex and may unintentionally overlook organisms. Surveys integrating environmental DNA (eDNA) collections have provided rapid biodiversity assessments, while helping to circumvent some limitations of visual surveys. The present study describes the results of an exploratory eDNA survey, which aims to characterize metazoan communities of four Reunionese lagoons located along the west coast of the island. As eDNA surveys first require deliberate study design and optimization for each new context, we sought to establish a modernized workflow implementing specialized equipment to collect and preserve samples to facilitate future studies in these lagoons. During the austral summer of 2023, samples were pumped directly from surface and bottom depths at each site through self-preserving filters which were then processed for DNA metabarcoding using regions of the 12S ribosomal RNA (12S), small ribosomal subunit 18S (18S) and Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) genes. The survey detected high species richness that varied by site, and in a single collection period, recovered the presence of 60 teleost families and numerous invertebrate taxa, including members of the coral faunal community that are less studied in Reunion. Distinct biological communities were observed at each site, and within a single lagoon, suggesting that these differences are due to site-specific factors (e.g., environmental variables, geographic distance, etc.). Although continued protocol optimization is needed, the present findings demonstrate the successful application of an eDNA-based survey for biodiversity assessment within Reunionese lagoons.

Summary: Repair of DNA double-strand breaks by the non-homologous end-joining pathway is initiated by the binding of Ku to DNA ends. Multiple Ku proteins load onto linear DNAs in vitro. However, in cells, Ku loading is limited to ∼1–2 molecules per DNA end. The mechanisms enforcing this limit are currently unclear. Here, we show that the catalytic subunit of the DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PKcs), but not its protein kinase activity, is required to prevent excessive Ku entry into chromatin. Ku accumulation is further restricted by two mechanisms: a neddylation/FBXL12-dependent process that actively removes loaded Ku molecules throughout the cell cycle and a CtIP/ATM-dependent mechanism that operates in S phase. Finally, we demonstrate that the misregulation of Ku loading leads to impaired transcription in the vicinity of DNA ends. Together, our data shed light on the multiple mechanisms operating to prevent Ku from invading chromatin and interfering with other DNA transactions.

In the achievement motivation literature, researches focusing on a concept of the 2 x 2 achievement goal framework are increasingly. However, evidences that support the reliability and validity of this framework are still needed. The purpose of this study was to validate the construct of Thai version of the 2 x 2 Achievement goal orientation scale by using confirmatory factor analysis. This scale was designed to measure the type of students motivational orientations toward learning achievement. The participants of this study involved 518 undergraduate students in Thailand. The descriptive statistics and reliability estimates were analyzed in the current sample. The results support the construct validity of four-factor structure of achievement goal orientation scale. This study contributed empirical evidences and cross-cultural validity of achievement goal orientation in terms of the 2 x 2 achievement goal framework (mastery-approach, mastery-avoidance, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance goal orientations).

The impact of internal and barotropic tides on the vertical and horizontal temperature structure off the Amazon River was investigated during two highly contrasted seasons (AMJ: April–May–June; ASO: August–September–October) over a 3-year period from 2013 to 2015. Twin regional simulations, with and without tides, were used to highlight the general effect of tides. The findings reveal that tides have a cooling effect on the ocean from the surface (∼ 0.3 ∘C) to above the thermocline (∼ 1.2 ∘C), while warming it up below the thermocline (∼ 1.2 ∘C). The heat budget analysis indicates that the vertical mixing is the dominant process driving temperature variations within the mixed layer, while it is associated with both horizontal and vertical advection to explain temperature variations below. The increased mixing in the simulations including tides is attributed to breaking of internal tides (ITs) on their generation sites over the shelf break and offshore along their propagation pathways. Over the shelf, mixing is driven by the dissipation of the barotropic tides. In addition, the vertical terms of the heat budget equation exhibit wavelength patterns typical of mode-1 IT. The study highlights the key role of tides and particularly how IT-related vertical mixing shapes the ocean temperature off the Amazon. Furthermore, we found that tides impact the interactions between the upper ocean interface and the overlying atmosphere. They contribute significantly to increasing the net heat flux between the atmosphere and the ocean, with a notable seasonal variation from 33.2 % in AMJ to 7.4 % in ASO seasons. This emphasizes the critical role of tidal dynamics in understanding regional-scale climate.

Recently developed experimental and computational approaches to identify putative coding small ORFs (smORFs) in genomes have revealed thousands of smORFs localized within coding and non-coding RNAs. They can be translated into smORF peptides or microproteins, which are defined as less than 100 amino acids in length. The identification of such a large number of potential biological regulators represents a major challenge, notably for elucidating the in vivo functions of these microproteins. Since the emergence of this field, Drosophila has proved to be a valuable model for studying the biological functions of microproteins in vivo. In this review, we outline how the smORF field emerged and the nomenclature used in this domain. We summarize the technical challenges associated with identifying putative coding smORFs in the genome and the relevant translated microproteins. Finally, recent findings on one of the best studied smORF peptides, Pri, and other microproteins studied so far in Drosophila are described. These studies highlight the diverse roles that microproteins can fulfil in the regulation of various molecular targets involved in distinct cellular processes during animal development and physiology. Given the recent emergence of the microprotein field and the associated discoveries, the microproteome represents an exquisite source of potentially bioactive molecules, whose in vivo biological functions can be explored in the Drosophila model.

[This paper is part of the Focused Collection on Gender in Physics.] Positive self-assessment of ability in the quantitative domains is considered critical for student participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics field studies. The present study investigated associations of gender compatibility (gender typicality and contentedness) and math-gender stereotypes with self-concepts in math and physics. Statistical analysis of survey data was based on a sample of 170 male and female high school science students matched on propensity scores based on age and past GPA scores in math. Results of MANCOVA analyses indicated that the combination of high personal gender compatibility with low endorsement of math-gender stereotypes was associated with low gender differentials in math and physics self-concepts whereas the combination of high personal gender compatibility with high endorsement of math-gender stereotypes was associated with high gender differentials in math and physics self-concepts. These results contribute to the recent theoretical and empirical work on antecedents to the math and physics identities critical to achieving gender equity in STEM fields.

This study conducted in Thailand examined the relationship between measures of social relatedness and motivational goal orientation as well as bachelor degree aspirations of vocational school students. Data were collected from students enrolled in a vocational school near Bangkok (n = 386). The analysis found that teacher support for students was the best predictor of students' adoption of mastery goals, school identification was the best predictor of students' adoption of performance approach goals, and peer involvement was the best predictor of students' adoption of performance avoidance goals. There was a significant interaction between school identification and peer involvement on the intention to pursue a bachelor degree. The researchers interpreted the results in terms of self-determination theory and discussed the implications of students' sense of relatedness to vocational school environment.

A study of changes in oxygen transfer through micro-agglomerated corks was carried out over 24 months under controlled storage conditions (Chanut et al., 2023a). This work demonstrated that the glass/cork interface can represent a major entry route for oxygen into wine bottles. It also showed that there is no difference in oxygen transfer at 20°C between bottles stored horizontally and vertically. However, high storage temperature greatly increases oxygen transfer at the interface between the cork and the bottleneck.

Abstract Nemaline myopathy (NM) is a muscle disorder with broad clinical and genetic heterogeneity. The clinical presentation of affected individuals ranges from severe perinatal muscle weakness to milder childhood-onset forms, and the disease course and prognosis depends on the gene and mutation type. To date, 14 causative genes have been identified, and ACTA1 accounts for more than half of the severe NM cases. ACTA1 encodes α-actin, one of the principal components of the contractile units in skeletal muscle. We established a homogenous cohort of ten unreported families with severe NM, and we provide clinical, genetic, histological, and ultrastructural data. The patients manifested antenatal or neonatal muscle weakness requiring permanent respiratory assistance, and most deceased within the first months of life. DNA sequencing identified known or novel ACTA1 mutations in all. Morphological analyses of the muscle biopsy specimens showed characteristic features of NM histopathology including cytoplasmic and intranuclear rods, cytoplasmic bodies, and major myofibrillar disorganization. We also detected structural anomalies of the perinuclear space, emphasizing a physiological contribution of skeletal muscle α-actin to nuclear shape. In-depth investigations of the nuclei confirmed an abnormal localization of lamin A/C, Nesprin-1, and Nesprin-2, forming the main constituents of the nuclear lamina and the LINC complex and ensuring nuclear envelope integrity. To validate the relevance of our findings, we examined muscle samples from three previously reported ACTA1 cases, and we identified the same set of structural aberrations. Moreover, we measured an increased expression of cardiac α-actin in the muscle samples from the patients with longer lifespan, indicating a potential compensatory effect. Overall, this study expands the genetic and morphological spectrum of severe ACTA1-related nemaline myopathy, improves molecular diagnosis, highlights the enlargement of the perinuclear space as an ultrastructural hallmark, and indicates a potential genotype/phenotype correlation.

There has been considerable research interest into the relationship between the parenting styles of Asians, and student motivation and achievement. The investigation presented in this paper contributes to the literature in this area by examining the influence of perceived parenting style on goal orientations and career aspirations of a sample of high school science students in Thailand (N = 2638). Results from a multiple regression analysis show several significant findings: students who perceived their parents as empathic were more likely to have adopted mastery goals and empathic parenting had a particularly positive influence on females' career aspirations. Students who perceived that their parents have domineering views were more likely to have adopted performance avoidance goals. Students who perceived that their parents are "the regulators of family rules" were more likely to adopt both mastery and performance goals. These findings are discussed in light of social dimensions of achievement goals and gender roles.

Abstract A recognized deficiency of ocean models with a constant‐depth vertical coordinate is for truncation errors in the vertical advection scheme to result in spurious numerical mixing of tracers, which can be substantially stronger than that prescribed by the model's mixing scheme. The z∼ vertical coordinate allows vertical levels to displace in a Lagrangian fashion on time scales shorter than a few days, but reverts to fixed levels on longer timescales, and is intended to reduce numerical mixing from transient vertical motions such as internal waves and tides. An assessment of z∼ in a 1/4° global implementation of the Nucleus for European Modeling of the Ocean model is presented. It is shown that, in the presence of near‐inertial gravity waves in the North Atlantic, z∼ significantly reduces Eulerian vertical velocities with respect to those in a simulation with the default z* vertical coordinate; that the vertical coordinate approaches an isopycnal, or adiabatic, surface on short timescales; and that both tendencies are enhanced when the z∼ timescale parameters are lengthened with respect to the default settings. Analysis based on density transformation rates shows that numerical mixing is consistently reduced by of order 10% as the z∼ timescales are lengthened. The realism of the model simulation with different timescale parameters is assessed in the global domain, and it is shown that drifts in temperature and salinity, and the spindown in z* of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, are reduced with z∼, without incurring significant drawbacks in other metrics such as the strength of the overturning circulation or sea ice cover.

Numerical simulations of the flame propagation process are mandatory to predict the consequences of dust explosions. One key parameter of these models is the burning velocity, i.e. the consumption rate of the reactants by the flame front. This burning velocity depends on the characteristics of the mixture and on the characteristics of the flow. Experiments are needed to estimate this burning velocity and to evaluate the influence of the turbulence on this velocity. In this paper, an optical setup is implemented to perform TR-PIV (Time-Resolved Particle Image Velocimetry) measurement during aluminium flame propagation in a vertical tube. Because of the nature of the studied phenomena (luminous flame, propagating flame, dense particle cloud…), performing PIV is challenging. With the analysis method detailed in this paper, the burning velocity and the corresponding turbulence level just ahead of the flame front are simultaneously determined. A preliminary result is presented to illustrate this method. Following this method, the influence of turbulence on burning velocity will be studied.

Numerical simulations are needed to model accurately the consequences of dust explosions. One key parameter for modelling the flame propagation is the burning velocity (ie the consumption rate of the reactants by the flame front). Most of the methods used for experimentally determining this burning velocity are based on rough assumptions. In this paper, the determination of burning velocity during aluminium flame propagation is directly determined by the measurement of two velocities: the flame propagation velocity (ie flame front velocity in the laboratory referential) and the unburned flow velocity. Data of unburned flow velocity are obtained by Pitot tube and PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) and are fairly close. An increase of burning velocity during aluminium flame propagation in the tube is observed. This increase is probably due to an increase of the turbulent intensity in front of the flame front during the propagation.

The blast created by a BLEVE is still a point of discussion; different considerations about the physics of BLEVE do not agree on the influence of flashing liquid on the pressure wave. In this work, a series of water BLEVE experiments was carried out in order to measure the internal pressure change and the aerial overpressure close to the vessel. Water was superheated at 290°C and contained in a tubular pipe with a rupture disk. Data show two aerial pressure peaks; and show that pressure in the vessel remains quite constant during boiling. This could contribute to a piston effect entailing a pressure wave. However, experimental data doesn’t demonstrate that this boiling plateau creates an overpressure. CFD modelling of the vapour release fits remarkably well with the overpressure data of the first peak. The second peak is not correctly represented by the vapour expansion modelling.

Formative assessment and feedback play important roles in empowering students as self-regulated learners in the higher education context. This study aimed to investigate the use of a rubric as a self-assessment tool which could generate intrinsic feedback to promote learning outcomes related to information literacy. We collected data from 584 Thai undergraduate students who enrolled in six sections of a general education course on information literacy skills. The researchers treated three sections as the control group and three sections as the experimental group. Only students in the experimental group took part in a formalized classroom activity based on using the course rubric as a tool for self-assessment. The results from the quasi-experimental study revealed that using a rubric as a self-assessment tool increased students' self-efficacy in information literacy, which were measured in terms of "information search," "information evaluation," "information processing," and "information communication and dissemination." Our findings have important implications for the development of self-efficacy in information literacy.

Purpose: This study aims to deploy game elements in an e-learning course on the Moodle platform. One of the greatest challenges of e-learning can be motivating and engaging students in learning. Gamification has been attracting increasing attention as a key underlying aspect of pedagogy that can be used to increase student engagement and motivation in learning. Design/methodology/approach: To investigate student satisfaction and engagement with an e-learning course, here an Information Literacy Skills course, the authors collected data from 104 undergraduate students enrolled on the course in Thailand. In addition, the authors used student interaction data obtained from Moodle to examine whether there were any differences in the frequency of online interaction with the course between the students who performed at an above-average level and those who were below average. Findings: The findings indicated that the students were highly satisfied with the gamification tools in Moodle and they were engaged in the gamified e-learning course. The authors found a significant difference in the frequency of online interaction with the course between the group who performed at an above-average level and the group who were below average. Practical implications: The findings have important implications for the development of gamification in e-learning. Originality/value: This paper fulfills an identified need to study how gamification idea can be implemented in e-learning.

The purpose of this study was to examine student perceptions of the learning environment in their program major and general education classrooms. The participants were 870 undergraduate students majoring in engineering, fine arts, education, economics and nursing programs at a university in Thailand. We found significant differences in the perceptions of the classroom learning environment across various disciplines. Engineering and economics students perceived the learning environment in general education classrooms as more cooperative than the learning environment in program major classrooms. Fine arts and nursing students perceived greater involvement among students in the program major classrooms than in the general education classrooms. Our findings contribute to the body of research on inter-disciplinary differences in classroom learning environments in universities and the ways in which these differences may impact student learning outcomes.

Disengagement and a lack of motivation have been found to be the major reasons for student drop out from higher education. In order to broaden our understanding of institutional and personal factors associated with intention to complete a college degree, this investigation examined the relationship between students' perceptions of classroom climate and institutional goal structures and their motivational orientation, engagement and intention to persist in college. Data was collected from first-year students (N = 1778) enrolled in an institution of higher education near Bangkok, Thailand. The results indicate that perceptions of classroom climate and institutional goal structures have significant associations with students' motivational orientations and levels of engagement and contribute to intention to persist in college.

The Agulhas Current, the western boundary current of the South Indian Ocean, has been shown to play an important role in the connectivity between the Indian and Atlantic oceans. The greater Agulhas Current system is highly dominated by mesoscale dynamics. To investigate their influence on the regional and global circulations, a family of high-resolution ocean general circulation model configurations based on the NEMO code has been developed. Horizontal resolution refinement is achieved by embedding “nests” covering the South Atlantic and the western Indian oceans at 1/10∘ (INALT10) and 1/20∘ (INALT20) within global hosts with coarser resolutions. Nests and hosts are connected through two-way interaction, allowing the nests not only to receive boundary conditions from their respective host but also to feed back the impact of regional dynamics onto the global ocean. A double-nested configuration at 1/60∘ resolution (INALT60) has been developed to gain insights into submesoscale processes within the Agulhas Current system. Large-scale measures such as the Drake Passage transport and the strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation are rather robust among the different configurations, indicating the important role of the hosts in providing a consistent embedment of the regionally refined grids into the global circulation. The dynamics of the Agulhas Current system strongly depend on the representation of mesoscale processes. Both the southward-flowing Agulhas Current and the northward-flowing Agulhas Undercurrent increase in strength with increasing resolution towards more realistic values, which suggests the importance of improving mesoscale dynamics as well as bathymetric slopes along this narrow western boundary current regime. The exploration of numerical choices such as lateral boundary conditions and details of the implementation of surface wind stress forcing demonstrates the range of solutions within any given configuration.

This study aimed to translate the information-seeking behavior scale from English to Thai, and to ascertain the construct reliability and validity of the scale. Data were collected from 664 undergraduate students in Thailand. The descriptive statistics were explored to see the extent to which various information sources are being used by undergraduate students. The researchers conducted Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) for the 33 Likert-type items. Results from EFA suggested the elimination of some items and results from CFA confirmed the validity of the scales. The shortened version was comprised of three constructs: "regulation activities when applying search strategies" (five items), "regulation activities when evaluating information on websites" (four items), and "referring to information" (four items). Educators and researchers may find this shortened version of the scale as a useful tool to assess students' information-seeking behavior.

Medical doctor and engineer are highly esteemed STEM professions. This study investigates academic and motivational characteristics of a sample of high school students in Thailand who aspire to become medical doctors or engineers. We used logistic regression to compare maths performance, gender typicality, gender contentedness, and maths and physics self-concepts among students with aspirations for these two professions. We found that high levels of felt gender contentedness in men had positive association with aspirations for engineering irrespective of the levels of maths or physics self-concept. We found that high levels of felt gender contentedness combined with high levels of maths or physics self-concept in women had positive associations with aspirations to become a medical doctor. These findings are evidence that student views of self are associated with uneven gendered patterns in career aspirations and have implications for the potential for future participation.

Background: PRR (Pattern Recognition Receptor) agonists have been widely tested as potent vaccine adjuvants. TLR7 (Toll-Like Receptor 7) and NOD2 (nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain 2) are key innate receptors widely expressed at mucosal levels. Methods: Here, we evaluated the immunostimulatory properties of a novel hybrid chemical compound designed to stimulate both TLR7 and NOD2 receptors. Finding: The combined TLR7/NOD2 agonist showed increase efficacy than TLR7L or NOD2L agonists alone or combined in different in vitro models. Dual TLR7/NOD2 agonist efficiently stimulates TLR7 and NOD2, and promotes the maturation and reprogramming of human dendritic cells, as well as the secretion of pro-inflammatory or adaptive cytokines. This molecule also strongly induces autophagy in human cells which is a major intracellular degradation system that delivers cytoplasmic constituents to lysosomes in both MHC class I and II-restricted antigen presentation. In vivo, TLR7/NOD2L agonist is a potent adjuvant after intranasal administration with NP-p24 HIV vaccine, inducing high-quality humoral and adaptive responses both in systemic and mucosal compartments. Use of TLR7/NOD2L adjuvant improves very significantly the protection of mice against an intranasal challenge with a vaccinia virus expressing the p24. Interpretation: Dual TLR7/NOD2L agonist is a very potent and versatile vaccine adjuvant and promote very efficiently both systemic and mucosal immunity. In the literature, the potential efficacy of the gamification of education has been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to explore the influence of applying gamification techniques to increase student engagement in learning. The quasi-experimental nonequivalent-control group design was used with 577 undergraduate students from six classes. The students in three of the classes were assigned to be the treatment group whereas the students in the others were the control group. Students in the treatment group attended a course designed for gamification, while students in the control group attended a regular course. The results showed that in the treatment group, student engagement in learning was significantly better than that of the students in the control group. We provide empirical support for gamification of education and conclude that students clearly valued the engagement of gamified learning activities.

We present an automated terrestrial laser scanning (ATLS) system with automatic near-real-time change detection processing. The ATLS system was tested on the Séchilienne landslide in France for a 6-week period with data collected at 30 min intervals. The purpose of developing the system was to fill the gap of high-temporal-resolution TLS monitoring studies of earth surface processes and to offer a cost-effective, light, portable alternative to ground-based interferometric synthetic aperture radar (GB-InSAR) deformation monitoring. During the study, we detected the flux of talus, displacement of the landslide and pre-failure deformation of discrete rockfall events. Additionally, we found the ATLS system to be an effective tool in monitoring landslide and rockfall processes despite missing points due to poor atmospheric conditions or rainfall. Furthermore, such a system has the potential to help us better understand a wide variety of slope processes at high levels of temporal detail.

The Indonesian seas play a fundamental role in the coupled ocean and climate system with the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) providing the only tropical pathway connecting the global oceans. Pacific warm pool waters passing through the Indonesian seas are cooled and freshened by strong air-sea fluxes and mixing from internal tides to form a unique water mass that can be tracked across the Indian Ocean basin and beyond. The Indonesian seas lie at the climatological center of the atmospheric deep convection associated with the ascending branch of the Walker Circulation. Regional SST variations cause changes in the surface winds that can shift the center of atmospheric deep convection, subsequently altering the precipitation and ocean circulation patterns within the entire Indo-Pacific region. Recent multi-decadal changes in the wind and buoyancy forcing over the tropical Indo-Pacific have directly affected the vertical profile, strength, and the heat and freshwater transports of the ITF. These changes influence the large-scale sea level, SST, precipitation and wind patterns. Observing long-term changes in mass, heat and freshwater within the Indonesian seas is central to understanding the variability and predictability of the global coupled climate system. Although substantial progress has been made over the past decade in measuring and modeling the physical and biogeochemical variability within the Indonesian seas, large uncertainties remain. A comprehensive strategy is needed for measuring the temporal and spatial scales of variability that govern the various water mass transport streams of the ITF, its connection with the circulation and heat and freshwater inventories and associated air-sea fluxes of the regional and global oceans. This white paper puts forward the design of an observational array using multi-platforms combined with high-resolution models aimed at increasing our quantitative understanding of water mass transformation rates and advection within the Indonesian seas and their impacts on the air-sea climate system.

Small open reading frames (smORFs) encoding ‘micropeptides’ exhibit remarkable evolutionary complexity. Conserved peptides encoded by mille-pattes (mlpt)/polished rice (pri)/tarsal less (tal) are essential for embryo segmentation in Tribolium but, in Drosophila, function in terminal epidermal differentiation and patterning of adult legs. Here, we show that a molecular complex identified in Drosophila epidermal differentiation, comprising Mlpt peptides, ubiquitin-ligase Ubr3 and transcription factor Shavenbaby (Svb), represents an ancient developmental module required for early insect embryo patterning. We find that loss of segmentation function for this module in flies evolved concomitantly with restriction of Svb expression in early Drosophila embryos. Consistent with this observation, artificially restoring early Svb expression in flies causes segmentation defects that depend on mlpt function, demonstrating enduring potency of an ancestral developmental switch despite evolving embryonic patterning modes.
