The objectives of this study were to calculate the radius of influence (ROI) of well for an air-sparging (AS)/soil vapor extraction (SVE) system and to evaluate the applicability of the system applied for the remediation of the petroleum contaminated rail site. For air permeability test, three monitoring wells were installed at a location of 1.3 m, 2.3 m, 3.0 m from the extraction well. And the pressure of each monitoring well was measured by extracting air from the extraction well with the pressure and flow of (�)2,600 mmH2O and 1.58 m 3 /min. The ROI for an extraction well was calculated as 4.31 m. Air was injected into the injection well with the pressure and flow of 3,500 mmH2O and 0.6 m 3 /min to estimate the radius of influence for oxygen transfer. Oxygen concentrations of air from three monitoring wells were measured. The ROI of an injection well for oxygen transfer was calculated as 3.46 m. The 28 extraction wells and 19 injection wells were installed according to the ROI calculated. The AS/SVE system was operated eight hours a day for five months. The rail site was contaminated with the petroleum and concentrations of benzene, toluene, and xylene were over the 'Worrisome Standard' of the 'Soil Environment Conservation Act'. The contaminated area was estimated as 732 m 2 and contaminants were dispersed up to (�)3 m from the ground. During the operation period, soil samples were collected from 5 points and analyzed periodically. With the AS/SVE system operation, concentrations of benzene, toluene, and xylene were decreased from 7.5 mg/kg to 2.0 mg/kg, from 32.0 mg/kg to 23.0 mg/kg, from 35.5 mg/kg to 23.0 mg/kg, respectively. The combined AS/SVE system applied to the rail site contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exhibited a high applicability. But the concentration of contaminants in soil were fluctuated due to the heterogeneous of soil condition. Also the effect of the remediation mechanisms was not clearly identified.

This study was conducted to evaluate the slurping process affecting the variation of free product and VOCs concentration and the bioaugmentation effect on bioremediation process. Free products and soil gas were extracted from 30 extraction wells installed in a petroleum contaminated area. The extraction system was operated for 10 hours per day with 1 hour on-and-off mode. The thickness of free product in extraction well was decreased from 11.7 cm to 4.5 cm and the VOCs concentration was increased from 10.37 ppm to 30.78 ppm during the operation period. After the slurping process for 2 months, contaminated soil was treated with bioremediation process in 2 cells, m, biologically enhanced with adjusting oxygen, moisture and nutrients concentration. Total 1,400 L of microbial inoculant, Naturesys. (Dong Myung Ent. Co.) was added to the pile B, which has an outstanding ability for degrading petroleum hydrocarbons. The results showed that bioremediaton effect in soil with the microorganisms solution is 33% higher than that in soil with only residual bacteria.

The feasibility of catholyte conditioning with the acidic solution and pre-treatment of soil with acidic solution was investigated with the electrokinetic remediation of Zn and Ni contaminated field soil. The extraction of Zn and Ni from soil increased with the decrease in pH of the extracting solution and nitric acid was very effective to extract Zn and Ni from the soil. Conventional electrokinetic treatment and acetate buffer circulation method were not effective to remove Zn and Ni from the soil. Pre-treatment of the soil with acidic solution enhanced the desorption of Zn and Ni and catholyte conditioning with this solution was effective in maintaining the overall soil pH within the electrokinetic cell. The catholyte conditioning and pre-treatment method enhanced the removal of Zn and Ni up to 41% and 40% after operation for 4 weeks. More than 96% of Zn and Ni removed by electrokinetic remediation were due to the electromigration. Catholyte conditioning and the pre-treatment method is effective in enhancing metal removal in electrokinetic remediation.

In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of in situ electrokinetic remediation for arsenic (As)-, copper (Cu)-, and lead (Pb)-contaminated soil, in a pilot-scale field application with two-dimensional electrode configurations. Square and hexagonal configurations with different electrode spacing, 1 m and 2 m, were investigated under a constant 100 V. A square configuration with electrode spacing of 2 m removed 61.5 % of As, 11.4 % of Cu, and 0.9 % of Pb, respectively, and a hexagonal configuration with the same spacing showed a higher removal efficiency in top (59 % of As, 0–0.5 m) and middle (53 % of As, 0.5–1.0 m) layers, but much lower removal efficiency in the bottom layer (1–1.5 m), which was thought to be due to groundwater flow through periodic rise and fall of tides. Fractionation analysis showed that As bound to Fe–Mn oxyhydroxide was the main form of As removed by the electrokinetic process. The two-dimensional configuration wasted less electrical energy by Joule heating, and required fewer electrode installations, compared to the one-dimensional electrode configuration.

The c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway is regulated by JNK-interacting protein-1 (JIP1), which is a scaffolding protein assembling the components of the JNK cascade. Overexpression of JIP1 deactivates the JNK pathway selectively by cytoplasmic retention of JNK and thereby inhibits gene expression mediated by JNK, which occurs in the nucleus. Here, we report the crystal structure of human JNK1 complexed with pepJIP1, the peptide fragment of JIP1, revealing its selectivity for JNK1 over other MAPKs and the allosteric inhibition mechanism. The van der Waals contacts by the three residues (Pro157, Leu160, and Leu162) of pepJIP1 and the hydrogen bonding between Glu329 of JNK1 and Arg156 of pepJIP1 are critical for the selective binding. Binding of the peptide also induces a hinge motion between the N- and C-terminal domains of JNK1 and distorts the ATP-binding cleft, reducing the affinity of the kinase for ATP. In addition, we also determined the ternary complex structure of pepJIP1-bound JNK1 complexed with SP600125, an ATP-competitive inhibitor of JNK, providing the basis for the JNK specificity of the compound.
