1. α-Glucosidase inhibitory fatty acids from Morchella fluvialis mushroom

Abstract

Morchella fluvialis, a morel mushroom, is one of the most famous edible mushrooms all over the world. Interest in this mushroom is steadily increasing due to its organoleptic properties and nutritional value. The methanolic extract of M. fluvialis showed α-glucosidase inhibitory and antioxidant activities in an assay system. Therefore, the purification and characterisation of bioactive metabolites and evaluation of biological activity were conducted. Fractionation of the M. fluvialis extract resulted in the isolation of nine compounds, namely, three fatty acids, (9Z,12Z)-octadecadienoic acid (linoleic acid, 1), (9Z,12Z)-3-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (2) and (6Z,9Z)-13-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (3); four sterols, stellasterol (4), ergosterol peroxide (5), ergosterol (6) and brassicasterol (7); one sugar alcohol, arabitol (8); and nicotinamide (9). Among them, compounds 2–3 and 7 were first reported from Morchella. In addition, compound 1 exhibited potent α-glucosidase inhibition, with an IC50 value of 14.8 μM. The content of compound 1, the major compound, was 1.2 mg · g–1 extract, as quantitated by HPLC analysis, which was lower than the IC50 value of compound 1. Therefore, M. fluvialis can benefit from diabetes and related diseases through the synergistic effect of linoleic acid (1) and other ingredients.

Abstract

Moderate Intensity Low Oxygen Diluted (MILD) combustion has been investigated for a long time in order to minimize NOX emission still enhancing thermal efficiencies in the combustion equipment. Many researches about MILD combustion have been recently performed, but studies on MILD combustion of renewable fuel such as ethanol has been very scarce and particularly, specific information on the NOX production in ethanol-air MILD combustion has not been reported yet. In order to satisfy the condition for MILD combustion, internal recirculation is known to be essential in order to entrain the combustion products gas into air and fuel jets of combustion system. In this work, a series of numerical analysis with simplified opposed jet geometry have been done using the OPPDIF in Ansys program. Numerical analysis on how the recirculation ratio (KV) affects NOX emission in the ethanol-air combustion for MILD formation were carried out under the condition of various burnt gas dilution in reactant flow. The results show that the temperature was decreased by the increase of the recirculation ratio and the maximum heat release value became also low by the increase of the recirculation ratio. It was also found that the pyrolysis zone of the heat release was disappeared and the two heat release peaks are merged into one as combustion pattern is changed to MILD combustion mode.

9. Brown Rot of Apricot and Mume Caused by Phomopsis vexans

Abstract

Brown rot symptoms severely occurred on fruits of apricot and mume grown in Changnyeong, Suwon and Yeongi in Korea during a disease survey in June 2002. A total of 32 isolates of Phomopsis sp. was obtained from the fruit rot symptoms. All isolates were identified as Phomopsis vexans based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Four isolates of the fungus were tested for pathogenicity to fruits of apricot and mume by artificial inoculation. All isolates induced brown rot symptoms on the fruits of apricot and mume by wound inoculation. Unwounded inoculation also induced symptoms on mume fruits but not on apricot fruits. The symptoms on the fruits induced by artificial inoculation were similar to those observed in the orchard. The pathogenicity tests revealed that mume was more susceptible to the pathogen than apricot. This is the first report of brown rot of apricot and mume caused by P. vexans.
