1. Cytological analysis of flower development, insights into suitable growth area and genomic background: implications for Glehnia littoralis conservation and sustainable utilization

Abstract

Abstract Background Glehnia littoralis F. Schmidt ex Miq., an endangered plant species with significant medicinal, edible, and ecological value, is now a central concern for conservation and sustainable utilization. Investigating the physiological and ecological mechanisms leading to its endangerment and elucidating its genetic background constitutes the foundation for conducting in-depth research on G. littoralis. Results Our observations have revealed a significant degree of floral sterility in wild populations of G. littoralis. The inflorescences of G. littoralis are classified into three types: completely fertile, completely sterile, and partially fertile compound umbels. Moreover, the flowers of G. littoralis can be categorized into fertile and sterile types. Sterile flowers exhibited abnormalities in the stigma, ovary, and ovules. This study is the first to discover that the presence or absence of a giant cell at the funiculus during the initiation of ovule primordium determines whether the flower can develop normally, providing cytological evidence for female sterility in G. littoralis. Conversely, both fertile and sterile flowers produced normally developed pollen. Field observations have suggested that robust plants bear more fertile umbels, while weaker ones have fewer or even no fertile umbels, indicating a close relationship between flower fertility and plant nutritional status. Our model correctly predicted that the eastern coastal regions of China, as well as prospective areas in Neimenggu and Sichuan, are suitable environments for its cultivation. Additionally, Using flow cytometry and genome survey, we estimated the genome size of G. littoralis to be 3.06 Gb and the heterozygosity to be 4.58%. Conclusion The observations and findings presented in this study were expected to provide valuable insights for further conserving its genetic resources and sustainable utilization of G. littoralis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Grasslands represent a major biome on Earth and play a vital role in ecosystem functioning and dynamics. However, owing to the variations among grassland types, the impact of grazing on plant community diversity and stability remains unclear. This study is based on the typical steppe of the Mongolian Plateau. Field sampling and data analysis were combined to qualitatively and quantitatively investigate the structural characteristics, species diversity, and stability of plant communities under varying grazing intensities, that is, four‐season nomadic, two‐season rotational, and sedentary grazing (FSNG, TSRG, and SG, respectively). The results indicated that FSNG pastures exhibited the largest number of plant species while FSNG and TSRG pastures exhibited relatively high importance values for the primary dominant species. Carex duriuscula, Chenopodium glaucum, and Cleistogenes squarrosa were prominent in SG pastures, with C. duriuscula having the largest importance value. The mean height, cover, and aboveground biomass of plant communities in FSNG were significantly higher than those in SG (p TSRG > SG, suggesting that judicious grazing practices could enhance grassland stability. The findings reveal that grazing patterns influence plant community composition and function and that FSNG pastures promote higher species diversity, perennial dominance, and overall stability compared with TSRG and SG pastures.

3. Genetic evaluation using next-generation sequencing of children with short stature: a single tertiary-center experience

Abstract

Purpose We used next-generation sequencing (NGS) to investigate the genetic causes of suspected genetic short stature in 37 patients, and we describe their phenotypes and various genetic spectra. Methods We reviewed the medical records of 50 patients who underwent genetic testing using NGS for suspected genetic short stature from June 2019 to December 2022. Patients with short stature caused by nongenetic factors or common chromosomal abnormalities were excluded. Thirty-seven patients from 35 families were enrolled in this study. We administered one of three genetic tests (2 targeted panel tests or whole exome sequencing) to patients according to their phenotypes. Results Clinical and molecular diagnoses were confirmed in 15 of the 37 patients, for an overall diagnostic yield of 40.5%. Fifteen pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants were identified in 13 genes (ACAN, ANKRD11, ARID1B, CEP152, COL10A1, COL1A2, EXT1, FGFR3, NIPBL, NRAS, PTPN11, SHOX, SLC16A2). The diagnostic rate was highest in patients who were small for their gestational age (7 of 11, 63.6%). Conclusions Genetic evaluation using NGS can be helpful in patients with suspected genetic short stature who have clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Further studies are needed to develop patient selection algorithms and panels containing growth-related genes.

The application of plant growth-promoting rhizosphere (PGPR) and Gamma-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) has a potential role in improving plant tolerance under abiotic stress, while their combined effects remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the joint effects of PGPR and γ-PGA on maize growth and rhizosphere microbial communities under salt stress. A pot experiment consisting of two strain treatments (CK, M10), two γ-PGA treatments (γ0, γ1) and two salt treatments (S1, S2) was performed for this purpose. 5. Synergistic regulation of irrigation and drainage based on crop salt tolerance and leaching threshold

Abstract

The implementation of current drip irrigation scheduling, which only considers crop water demands (referred to as empirical drip irrigation) during the growth period and uncontrolled leaching during fallow periods, exacerbates issues of soil salinization and water scarcity in the Xinjiang region. In pursuit of more scientifically effective irrigation and leaching methods, this study employed the H2DSWAP model coupled by the HYDRUS-2D and a Soil–Water–Atmosphere–Plant model (SWAP) for scenario experiments. Results showed that prolonged irrigation without drainage (winter-free irrigation) led to an annual upward trend in salt accumulation within the root zone (0–100 cm) through drip irrigation under film mulch. In regions with shallow groundwater levels (≤ 2.0 m), an exclusive focus on crop water requirements and neglecting leaching demands for salts led to a gradual reduction in crop yield, reducing by 86.8 % after 12 years of operation. Conversely, by considering both water and salt stress thresholds during the growth stage for irrigation, optimal crop yields can be maintained. However, salt predominantly accumulated within the 60–100 cm soil layer, inducing recurrent leaching during the growth period due to continual salt migration in this layer. This occurrence resulted in wasted water resources, uneven soil salt distribution, and ultimately diminished crop yields. The simulation findings for diverse winter irrigation scenarios suggested that the salinity content in the deep root zone (60–100 cm) could function as a leaching threshold for determining the necessity of winter irrigation, approximating a value of 11 g kg−1. In comparison to conventional irrigation and drainage practices, the irrigation and drainage coordinated regulation model proposed in this study contributes to salt removal, effectively restraining the waste of water resources caused by frequent winter irrigation.

We evaluated CKD progression in Black and White participants and the contribution of biological risk factors. We included the study of lung function (measured by forced vital capacity [FVC]), which is part of the emerging notion of interorgan cross-talk with the kidneys to racial differences in CKD progression.Methods: This longitudinal study included 2175 Black and 2207 White adult Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) participants. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) were measured at study year 10 (age 27– 41y) and every five years for 20 years. The outcome was CKD progression through no CKD, low, moderate, high, or very high-risk categories based on eGFR and UACR in combination. The association between race and CKD progression as well as the contribution of risk factors to racial differences were assessed in multivariable-adjusted Cox models.Results: Black participants had higher CKD transition probabilities than White participants and more prevalent risk factors during the 20-year period studied. Hazard ratios for CKD transition for Black (vs White participants) were 1.38 from No CKD into ≥ low risk, 2.25 from ≤ low risk into ≥ moderate risk, and 4.49 from ≤ moderate risk into ≥ high risk. Racial differences in CKD progression from No CKD into ≥ low risk were primarily explained by FVC (54.8%), hypertension (30.9%), and obesity (20.8%). In contrast, racial differences were less explained in more severe transitions.Conclusion: Black participants had a higher risk of CKD progression, and this discrepancy may be partly explained by FVC and conventional risk factors.Keywords: CKD progression, racial disparities, young adults, conventional risk factors, lung function

We sought to develop prediction models employing machine learning algorithms for use as screening instruments for osteoporosis in T2DM patients.Patients and Methods: Data were collected from 433 participants and analyzed using nine categorical machine learning algorithms to select features based on demographic and clinical variables. Multiple classification models were compared using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC-AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, the average precision (AP), precision, F1 score, precision-recall curves, calibration plots, and decision curve analysis (DCA) to determine the best model. In addition, 5-fold cross-validation was utilized to optimize the model, followed by an evaluation of feature significance using Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP). Using latent class analysis (LCA), distinct subpopulations were identified by constructing several discrete clusters.Results: In this study, nine feature variables were identified to construct predictive models for osteoporosis in individuals with T2DM. The machine learning algorithms achieved an AP range of 0.444– 1.000. The XGBoost model was selected as the final prediction model with an AUROC of 0.940 in the training set, 0.772 in the validation set for 5-fold cross-validation, and 0.872 in the test set. Using SHAP methodology, 25(OH)D was identified as the most important risk factor. Additionally, a 3-Class model was constructed using LCA, which categorized individuals into high, medium, and low-risk groups.Conclusion: Our study developed a predictive model with high accuracy and clinical validity for predicting osteoporosis in type 2 diabetes patients. We also identified three subpopulations with varying osteoporosis risk using clustering. 8. Optimization of sustainable development path of grassland ecotourism in Hulunbeier City based on data mining technology

In recent years, the status of ecotourism in mass tourism has gradually increased, among which the grassland ecotourism market is booming. The study uses data mining techniques to extract POI data for grassland ecotourism in Hulunbeier City. The mined POI data of grassland ecotourism in Hulunbeier City are analyzed by using nearest-neighbor distance index analysis, multi-distance spatial clustering, kernel density estimation, standard deviation ellipse, and geodetector model to explore the spatial agglomeration characteristics of grassland ecotourism in Hulunbeier City, the grassland tourism development pattern, and the influencing factors of grassland ecotourism. Accordingly, the sustainable development of grassland tourism in Hulunbuir City is proposed. The nearest neighbor index (NNI) value of grassland tourism in Hulunbuir City is 0.64 (less than 1), and the NNI index of the 13 flags (cities and districts) under the jurisdiction of Hulunbuir City is less than 1, which indicates that the grassland tourism industry is characterized by agglomeration and distribution within the city of Hulunbuir. The grassland ecotourism industry in Hulunbuir City presents a spatial distribution pattern of “multi-core agglomeration” with large agglomeration and small dispersion. The high-density cores are located in New Barkhu Left Banner, Manzhouli, Hailar District, Chenbalhu Banner, and Ergunar City. There are eight subdivided types of grassland tourism development patterns in Hulunbeier City. The four major categories of single dominant, double dominant, strong integrated, and weak integrated accounted for 34.11%, 23.55%, 7.09%, and 35.25% of the total, respectively. The spatial distribution of tourism in Hulunbeier Grassland is more influenced by natural geographic factors than socio-economic factors.

This paper first takes the process of rural gentrification as the main line, selects the village of Annoyed bun in Hohhot City, Inner Mongolia Province, as the case area, conducts research on the characteristics of the remodeling of the living space of the village of the annoyed bun, and proposes the theoretical system of rural gentrification, the governance structure and the mechanism. Secondly, the research on tourism-based villages based on the coupling coordination degree model is carried out to determine the evaluation factors in the coupling index system of tourism-based villages according to the needs of tourists and then construct the evaluation index system of the coupling coordination degree model. Then, the entropy value method is used to calculate the weight of each index, and on the result of the weight of each index, the coupling coordination degree formula can be used to derive the comprehensive evaluation index and the fusion coordination degree value, and then analyze the example of the tourism-type village based on the coupling coordination degree model. The results show that on the value of the degree of integration and coordination, in the three years from 2015 to 2017, Hohhot City, Hohhot City, annoying package village ecology and tourism-type villages mainly show the role of mutual promotion, Hohhot City, towards the direction of mutual promotion between the two. This study promotes the revitalization, reconstruction and reorganization of village life, which objectively becomes a new path for constructing new rural areas and rejuvenation in China.

10. PeHVA22 gene family in passion fruit (Passiflora edulis): initial characterization and expression profiling diversity

Abstract

Passion fruit, an economically valuable fruit crop, is highly vulnerable to adverse climate conditions. The HVA22 genes, recognized as abscisic acid (ABA) and stress-inducible, play vital roles in stress response and growth regulation in diverse eukaryotic organisms. Here, six HVA22 genes were firstly identified in passion fruit genome and all predicted to be localized within the endoplasmic reticulum. Phylogenetic analyses showed that all PeHVA22s were divided into four subgroups. The gene structural features of PeHVA22 genes clustered in the same subgroup were relatively conserved, while the gene structure characteristics of PeHVA22s from different subgroups varied significantly. PeHVA22A and PeHVA22C closely clustered with barley HVA22 in Group II, were also induced by ABA and drought stress treatment, suggesting conserved roles similar to barley HVA22. Meanwhile, most PeHVA22s exhibited induced expression post-drought treatment but were suppressed under salt, low and high-temperature conditions, indicating a unique role in drought response. Additionally, PeHVA22s displayed tissue-specific expression patterns across diverse tissues, except for PeHVA22B which maybe a pseudogene. Notably, PeHVA22C, PeHVA22E, and PeHVA22F predominantly expressed in fruit, indicating their involvement in fruit development. Almost all PeHVA22s showed variable expression at different developmental stages of stamens or ovules, implying their roles in passion fruit’s sexual reproduction. The intricate roles of PeHVA22s may result from diverse regulatory factors including transcription factors and CREs related to plant growth and development, hormone and stress responsiveness. These observations highlighted that PeHVA22s might play conserved roles in ABA response and drought stress tolerance, and also be participated in the regulation of passion fruit growth and floral development.

11. Water, Salt, and Ion Transport and Its Response to Water-Saving Irrigation in the Hetao Irrigation District Based on the SWAT-Salt Model

Abstract

Soil salinization is one of the main hazards affecting the sustainable development of agriculture in the Hetao Irrigation District (HID) of Inner Mongolia. To grasp the water and salt transport patterns and spatial–temporal distribution characteristics of the HID at the regional scale, the improved Soil and Water Assessment Tool with a salinity module (SWAT-Salt) model was used to establish the distributed water and salt transport model for the watershed in this study. The results demonstrated that the modified model could more accurately represent the process of water and salt changes in the HID. The coefficient of determination (R2) in the simulation of streamflow and discharge salt loading was 0.83 and 0.86, respectively, and the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) was 0.80 and 0.74, respectively. Based on this, different hydrological processes (surface runoff, lateral flow, groundwater, soil seepage) as well as spatial–temporal distribution characteristics of water salinity in groundwater and soil were analyzed in the HID. Differences in groundwater and soil salinity in different land uses and soil types were also compared. Of these, surface runoff and lateral flow salt discharge loading are concentrated in the southwestern portion of the basin, while groundwater salt discharge loading is concentrated in the eastern as well as southwestern portions of the basin. The salt discharge loading from groundwater accounts for about 98.7% of the total salt discharge loading from all hydrological pathways and is the major contributing part of salt discharge from the irrigation area. Soil salinity increases gradually from west to east. Groundwater salinity (2946 mg/L) and soil water electrical conductivity (0.309 dS/m) were minimized in the cropland. Meanwhile, rational allocation of irrigation water can appropriately increase the amount of salt discharge loading. In conclusion, the model could provide a reference for the investigation of soil salinization and water–salt management measures in irrigation areas.

Abstract

Accurate crop classification is of vital importance for agricultural water management. Most researchers have achieved crop classification by model optimization in the same temporal and regional domain by adjusting the value of input features. This study aims to improve the accuracy of crop classification across temporal and spatial domains. Sentinel-2 satellite imagery is employed for crop classification training and prediction in selected farming areas of Heilongjiang Province by calculating vegetation indices and constructing sequential input feature datasets. The HUNTS filtering method was used to mitigate the influence of cloud cover, which increased the stability and completeness of the input feature data across different years. To address the issue of shifts in the input feature values during cross-scale classification, this study proposes the hypothesis testing distribution method (HTDM). This method balances the distribution of input feature values in the test set even without knowing the crop distribution, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the classification test set. The results indicate that the HTDM significantly improves prediction accuracy in cases of substantial image quality variance. In 2022, the recognition accuracy for crop types at all farms processed by the HTDM was above 87%, showcasing the strong robustness of the HTDM.

13. The Impact of Preschool Teachers' Dual Learning on Creativity

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of dual learning on preschool teachers' thriving at work and creative performance, and whether preschool teachers' thriving at work acts as a mediating factor in the relationship between dual learning and teachers' creative work. The participants were preschool teachers from Taiwan. Convenience sampling was used, resulting in a sample size of 388 people. The study results found that preschool teachers' dual learning, which includes both exploitative and exploratory learning, can improve the novelty and usefulness of their work and creativity. Furthermore, the study found that preschool teachers' thriving at work mediates the relationship between dual learning and creativity. This study also discovered that dual learning should combine and complement both exploitative and exploratory learning to achieve balance and the most significant effect. Therefore, it is essential to first help preschool teachers engage in both exploitative and exploratory learning. Schools and kindergartens can also provide relevant courses to help teachers combine these two learning methods. By integrating and complementing their advantages and disadvantages, a balance in learning can be achieved, thereby promoting teachers' creativity in their work.

Abstract

We present measurements of $B \to K{}^{*}(892)\gamma$ decays using $365\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data collected from 2019 to 2022 by the Belle~II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The data sample contains $(387 \pm 6) \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ events. We measure branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) and $C\!P$ asymmetries ($\mathcal{A}_{C\!P}$) for both $B^{0}\to K{}^{*0}\gamma$ and $B^{+}\to K{}^{*+}\gamma$ decays. The difference in $C\!P$ asymmetries ($\Delta \mathcal{A}_{C\!P}$) and the isospin asymmetry ($\Delta_{0+}$) between these neutral and charged channels are also measured. We obtain the following branching fractions and $C\!P$ asymmetries: $\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \to K{}^{*0}\gamma) = (4.14 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.11 ) \times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B} (B^{+} \to K{}^{*+}\gamma) = (4.02 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.13 )\times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{A}_{C\!P} (B^{0} \to K{}^{*0}\gamma) = (-3.3 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.4 )\%$, and $\mathcal{A}_{C\!P} (B^{+} \to K{}^{*+}\gamma) = (-0.7 \pm 2.9 \pm 0.6 )\%$. The measured difference in $C\!P$ asymmetries is $\Delta \mathcal{A}_{C\!P} = (+2.6 \pm 3.8 \pm 0.7 )\%$, and the measured isospin asymmetry is $\Delta_{0+} = (+5.0 \pm 2.0 \pm 1.5 )\%$. The first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with world-average values and theory predictions.

Abstract

Multimodal foundation models, such as Gemini and ChatGPT, have revolutionized human-machine interactions by seamlessly integrating various forms of data. Developing a universal spoken language model that comprehends a wide range of natural language instructions is critical for bridging communication gaps and facilitating more intuitive interactions. However, the absence of a comprehensive evaluation benchmark poses a significant challenge. We present Dynamic-SUPERB Phase-2, an open and evolving benchmark for the comprehensive evaluation of instruction-based universal speech models. Building upon the first generation, this second version incorporates 125 new tasks contributed collaboratively by the global research community, expanding the benchmark to a total of 180 tasks, making it the largest benchmark for speech and audio evaluation. While the first generation of Dynamic-SUPERB was limited to classification tasks, Dynamic-SUPERB Phase-2 broadens its evaluation capabilities by introducing a wide array of novel and diverse tasks, including regression and sequence generation, across speech, music, and environmental audio. Evaluation results indicate that none of the models performed well universally. SALMONN-13B excelled in English ASR, while WavLLM demonstrated high accuracy in emotion recognition, but current models still require further innovations to handle a broader range of tasks. We will soon open-source all task data and the evaluation pipeline.

16. Quantum Entanglement in Dirac Dynamics via Continuous-Time Quantum Walks in a Quantum Circuit Framework

Abstract

We propose a Continuous-Time Quantum Walks (CTQW) model for one-dimensional Dirac dynamics simulation with higher-order approximation. Our model bridges CTQW with a discrete-time model called Dirac Cellular Automata (DCA) via Quantum Fourier Transformation (QFT). From our continuous-time model, we demonstrate how varying time intervals and position space sizes affect both quantum entanglement between the internal space and external (position) space of the quantum state and the relativistic effect called Zitterbewegung. We find that the time interval changes the transition range for each site, and the position space sizes affect the value of transition amplitude. Therefore, it shows that the size of spacetime plays a crucial role in the observed quantum entanglement and relativistic phenomena in quantum computers. These results enhance the understanding of the interplay between internal and external spaces in Dirac dynamics through the insights of quantum information theory and enrich the application of the quantum walks-based algorithm.

17. Physics-Constrained Graph Neural Networks for Spatio-Temporal Prediction of Drop Impact on OLED Display Panels

Abstract

This study aims to predict the spatio-temporal evolution of physical quantities observed in multi-layered display panels subjected to the drop impact of a ball. To model these complex interactions, graph neural networks have emerged as promising tools, effectively representing objects and their relationships as graph structures. In particular, MeshGraphNets (MGNs) excel in capturing dynamics in dynamic physics simulations using irregular mesh data. However, conventional MGNs often suffer from non-physical artifacts, such as the penetration of overlapping objects. To resolve this, we propose a physics-constrained MGN that mitigates these penetration issues while maintaining high level of accuracy in temporal predictions. Furthermore, to enhance the model's robustness, we explore noise injection strategies with varying magnitudes and different combinations of targeted components, such as the ball, the plate, or both. In addition, our analysis on model stability in spatio-temporal predictions reveals that during the inference, deriving next time-step node positions by predicting relative changes (e.g., displacement or velocity) between the current and future states yields superior accuracy compared to direct absolute position predictions. This approach consistently shows greater stability and reliability in determining subsequent node positions across various scenarios. Building on this validated model, we evaluate its generalization performance by examining its ability to extrapolate with respect to design variables. Furthermore, the physics-constrained MGN serves as a near real-time emulator for the design optimization of multi-layered OLED display panels, where thickness variables are optimized to minimize stress in the light-emitting materials. It outperforms conventional MGN in optimization tasks, demonstrating its effectiveness for practical design applications.

Abstract

The Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) is one of the components of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) and can monitor any sources over two-thirds of the sky for up to 7 hours per day with >98\% duty cycle. In this work, we report the detection of two outbursts of the Fanaroff-Riley I radio galaxy NGC 1275 that were detected by LHAASO-WCDA between November 2022 and January 2023 with statistical significance of 5.2~$\sigma$ and 8.3~$\sigma$. The observed spectral energy distribution in the range from 500 GeV to 3 TeV is fitted by a power-law with a best-fit spectral index of $\alpha=-3.37\pm0.52$ and $-3.35\pm0.29$, respectively. The outburst flux above 0.5~TeV was ($4.55\pm 4.21)\times~10^{-11}~\rm cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$ and ($3.45\pm 1.78)\times~10^{-11}~\rm cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$, corresponding to 60\%, 45\% of Crab Nebula flux. Variation analysis reveals the variability time-scale of days at the TeV energy band. A simple test by one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model reproduces the data in the gamma-ray band well., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

We measure the time-integrated CP asymmetry in $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}$ decays reconstructed in $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow c\overline{c}$ events collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments. The corresponding data samples have integrated luminosities of 980 fb$^{-1}$ and 428 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. The $D^{0}$ decays are required to originate from the $D^{*+} \rightarrow D^{0}\pi^{+}$ decay, which determines the charm flavor at production time. A control sample of $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decays is used to correct for production and detection asymmetries. Abstract

In semiconducting monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (ML-TMDs), broken inversion symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling result in spin-valley lock-in effects so that the valley degeneracy may be lifted by external magnetic fields, potentially leading to real-space structural transformation. Here, we report magnetic field (B)-induced giant electric hysteretic responses to back-gate voltages in ML-MoS2 field-effect transistors (FETs) on SiO2/Si at temperatures < 20 K. The observed hysteresis increases with |B| up to 12 T and is tunable by varying the temperature. Raman spectroscopic and scanning tunneling microscopic studies reveal significant lattice expansion with increasing |B| at 4.2 K, and this lattice expansion becomes asymmetric in ML-MoS2 FETs on rigid SiO2/Si substrates, leading to out-of-plane mirror symmetry breaking and the emergence of a tunable out-of-plane ferroelectric-like polar order. This broken symmetry-induced polarization in ML-MoS2 shows typical ferroelectric butterfly hysteresis in piezo-response force microscopy, adding ML-MoS2 to the single-layer material family that exhibit out-of-plane polar order-induced ferroelectricity, which is promising for such technological applications as cryo-temperature ultracompact non-volatile memories, memtransistors, and ultrasensitive magnetic field sensors. Moreover, the polar effect induced by asymmetric lattice expansion may be further generalized to other ML-TMDs and achieved by nanoscale strain engineering of the substrate without magnetic fields.

Abstract

GPT-4o is an autoregressive omni model that accepts as input any combination of text, audio, image, and video, and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs. It's trained end-to-end across text, vision, and audio, meaning all inputs and outputs are processed by the same neural network. GPT-4o can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in conversation. It matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50\% cheaper in the API. GPT-4o is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models. In line with our commitment to building AI safely and consistent with our voluntary commitments to the White House, we are sharing the GPT-4o System Card, which includes our Preparedness Framework evaluations. In this System Card, we provide a detailed look at GPT-4o's capabilities, limitations, and safety evaluations across multiple categories, focusing on speech-to-speech while also evaluating text and image capabilities, and measures we've implemented to ensure the model is safe and aligned. We also include third-party assessments on dangerous capabilities, as well as discussion of potential societal impacts of GPT-4o's text and vision capabilities.

Abstract

We describe observations of low energy excess (LEE) events (background events observed in all light dark matter direct detection calorimeters) and noise in a two-channel silicon athermal phonon detector with 375 meV baseline energy resolution. We measure two distinct LEE populations: ``shared'' multichannel events with a pulse shape consistent with athermal phonon events, and sub-eV events which couple nearly exclusively to a single channel with a significantly faster pulse shape. These ``singles'' are consistent with events occurring within the aluminum athermal phonon collection fins. Similarly, our measured detector noise is higher than the theoretical expectation. Measured noise can be split into an uncorrelated component, consistent with shot noise from small energy depositions within the athermal phonon sensor itself, and a correlated component, consistent with shot noise from energy depositions within the silicon crystal's phonon system., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Traditional large language models (LLMs), while powerful, often fall short in delivering accurate and contextually rich responses, particularly in culturally specific domains. By integrating external databases with generative AI models, RAG technology bridges this gap, empowering chatbots to not only provide precise answers but also resonate deeply with the cultural nuances that are crucial for authentic interactions. This study delves into the intricate process of augmenting the chatbot's knowledge base with targeted cultural data, specifically curated to reflect the unique aspects of Hakka traditions, language, and practices. Through dynamic information retrieval, the RAG-enhanced chatbot becomes a versatile tool capable of handling complex inquiries that demand an in-depth understanding of Hakka cultural context. Abstract

Efforts to combine the advantages of multiple systems to enhance functionlities through solid solution design present a great challenge due to the constraint imposed by the classical Vegard law. Here, we successfully navigate this trade off by leveraging the synergistic effect of chemical doping and strain engineering in solid solution system of BiFeO3 BaTiO3. Unlike bulks, a significant deviation from the Vegard law accompanying with enhanced multiferroism is observed in the strained solid solution epitaxial films, where we achieve a pronounced tetragonality, enhanced saturated magnetization, substantial polarization, high ferroelectric Curie temperature, all while maintaining impressively low leakage current. These characteristics surpass the properties of their parent BiFeO3 and BaTiO3 films. Moreover, the superior ferroelectricity has never been reported in corresponding bulks. Abstract

In this article, we present a new learning method called sl-PINN to tackle the one-dimensional viscous Burgers problem at a small viscosity, which results in a singular interior layer. To address this issue, we first determine the corrector that characterizes the unique behavior of the viscous flow within the interior layers by means of asymptotic analysis. We then use these correctors to construct sl-PINN predictions for both stationary and moving interior layer cases of the viscous Burgers problem. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that sl-PINNs accurately predict the solution for low viscosity, notably reducing errors near the interior layer compared to traditional PINN methods. Our proposed method offers a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of the solution near the interior layer, aiding in capturing the robust part of the training solution.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent charge-parity ($CP$) decay-rate asymmetries in $B^0 \to J/\psi \pi^0$ decays. The data sample was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider in 2019-2022 and contains $(387\pm 6)\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs from $\Upsilon(4S)$ decays. We reconstruct $392\pm 24$ signal decays and fit the $CP$ parameters from the distribution of the proper-decay-time difference of the two $B$ mesons. We measure the branching fraction to be $B(B^0 \to J/\psi \pi^0)=(2.02 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.10)\times 10^{-5}$ and the direct and mixing-induced $CP$ asymmetries to be $C_{CP}=0.13 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.03$ and $S_{CP}=-0.88 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.03$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe mixing-induced $CP$ violation with a significance of $5.0$ standard deviations for the first time in this mode.

Abstract

Using (2712.4 $\pm$ 14.3)$\times 10^{6}$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, a partial wave analysis of the decay $\psi(3686) \to \phi \eta \eta' $ is performed with the covariant tensor approach. An axial-vector state with a mass near 2.3 $\rm GeV/c^2$ is observed for the first time. Its mass and width are measured to be 2316 $\pm 9_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 30_{\mathrm{syst}}\,\rm MeV/c^2$ and 89 $\pm 15_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 26_{\mathrm{syst}}\,\rm MeV$, respectively. The product branching fractions of $\mathcal{B}(\psi(3686) \to X(2300) \eta') \mathcal{B}(X(2300)\to \phi \eta)$ and $\mathcal{B}(\psi(3686) \to X(2300) \eta)\mathcal{B}(X(2300)\to \phi \eta')$ are determined to be (4.8 $\pm 1.3_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.7_{\mathrm{syst}})\times 10^{-6}$ and (2.2 $\pm 0.7_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.7_{\mathrm{syst}})\times 10^{-6}$, respectively. The branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(\psi(3686) \to \phi \eta \eta')$ is measured for the first time to be (3.14$\pm0.17_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.24_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-5}$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Abstract

A quantum-inspired optimization approach is proposed to study the portfolio optimization aimed at selecting an optimal mix of assets based on the risk-return trade-off to achieve the desired goal in investment. By integrating conventional approaches with quantum-inspired methods for penalty coefficient estimation, this approach enables faster and accurate solutions to portfolio optimization which is validated through experiments using a real-world dataset of quarterly financial data spanning over ten-year period. In addition, the proposed preprocessing method of two-stage search further enhances the effectiveness of our approach, showing the ability to improve computational efficiency while maintaining solution accuracy through appropriate setting of parameters. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on quantum-inspired techniques in finance, demonstrating its potential as a useful tool for asset allocation and portfolio management.

Abstract

The Gamma-ray Transients Monitor (GTM) on board the Formosat-8B (FS-8B) satellite is designed to detect and localize Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). By utilizing 2+2 CITIROC chips to manipulate 4+4 detectors, which are composed of GAGG(Ce) scintillators coupled with Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) and oriented in various directions to achieve all-sky coverage, the GRB saturation fluences of GTM in the 50 keV to 1 MeV range for Short GRBs (SGRBs) and Long GRBs (LGRBs) were estimated to be about $3.1 \times 10^{-4}$ and $5.0 \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm erg/cm^2}$, respectively, based on simulations. To precisely interpret the GTM readout signal in terms of energy, several measurements for isotope and gain calibration were conducted. Despite encountering issues with crosstalk and SiPM saturation effect in the data, the energy spectrum can still be recovered by appropriately discarding channel noise and mapping with the correct ADC-to-energy relation. This paper summarizes the energy resolution of GTM and the linear variations in the relationship between photon energy and readout signal. At 662 keV, the energy resolution is about 16 %. Also, it demonstrates that greater gain is achieved by increasing voltage or decreasing temperature.

Abstract

We report the detection of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source coincident with the locations of middle-aged (62.4~\rm kyr) pulsar PSR J0248+6021, by using the LHAASO-WCDA data of live 796 days and LHAASO-KM2A data of live 1216 days. A significant excess of \gray induced showers is observed both by WCDA in energy bands of 1-25~\rm TeV and KM2A in energy bands of $>$ 25~\rm TeV with 7.3 $\sigma$ and 13.5 $\sigma$, respectively. The best-fit position derived through WCDA data is R.A. = 42.06$^\circ \pm$ 0.12$^\circ$ and Dec. = 60.24$^\circ \pm $ 0.13$^\circ$ with an extension of 0.69$^\circ\pm$0.15$^\circ$ and that of the KM2A data is R.A.= 42.29$^\circ \pm $ 0.13$^\circ$ and Dec. = 60.38$^\circ \pm$ 0.07$^\circ$ with an extension of 0.37$^\circ\pm$0.07$^\circ$. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of this LHAASO source has been found from the radio band to the GeV band. The most plausible explanation of the VHE \gray emission is the inverse Compton process of highly relativistic electrons and positrons injected by the pulsar. Abstract

We perform the first search for $C\!P$ violation in ${D_{(s)}^{+}\to{}K_{S}^{0}K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{+}}$ decays. We use a combined data set from the Belle and Belle II experiments, which study $e^+e^-$ collisions at center-of-mass energies at or near the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. We use 980 fb$^{-1}$ of data from Belle and 428 fb$^{-1}$ of data from Belle~II. We measure six $C\!P$-violating asymmetries that are based on triple products and quadruple products of the momenta of final-state particles, and also the particles' helicity angles. We obtain a precision at the level of 0.5% for $D^+\to{}K_{S}^{0}K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{+}$ decays, and better than 0.3% for $D^+_{s}\to{}K_{S}^{0}K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{+}$ decays. No evidence of $C\!P$ violation is found. Our results for the triple-product asymmetries are the most precise to date for singly-Cabibbo-suppressed $D^+$ decays. Abstract

Existing vision-language understanding benchmarks largely consist of images of objects in their usual contexts. As a consequence, recent multimodal large language models can perform well with only a shallow visual understanding by relying on background language biases. Thus, strong performance on these benchmarks does not necessarily correlate with strong visual understanding. In this paper, we release JourneyBench, a comprehensive human-annotated benchmark of generated images designed to assess the model's fine-grained multimodal reasoning abilities across five tasks: complementary multimodal chain of thought, multi-image VQA, imaginary image captioning, VQA with hallucination triggers, and fine-grained retrieval with sample-specific distractors. Unlike existing benchmarks, JourneyBench explicitly requires fine-grained multimodal reasoning in unusual imaginary scenarios where language bias and holistic image gist are insufficient. We benchmark state-of-the-art models on JourneyBench and analyze performance along a number of fine-grained dimensions. Results across all five tasks show that JourneyBench is exceptionally challenging for even the best models, indicating that models' visual reasoning abilities are not as strong as they first appear. We discuss the implications of our findings and propose avenues for further research.

34. Factors Mediating Pre-Existing Autism Diagnosis and Later Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors: A Follow-Up Cohort Study

Abstract

Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are more likely to have suicidal thoughts and behaviors. However, little research delineates the temporal and mechanistic associations between potential risk factors and suicidality in autistic individuals. We assessed 129 autistic and 121 age-matched and sex-assigned-at-birth-matched typically developing (TD) children and youth at baseline and follow-up. We evaluated internalizing/externalizing problems, bullying experiences, and three executive function tasks at a mean baseline age of 13.4 years (standard deviation: 4.2 years). After an average of 5.8 years (standard deviation: 1.7 years), we evaluated their suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The experiences of being bullied partially mediated the temporal relationship between pre-existing ASD and later-reported suicidal thoughts. Several cognitive flexibility and sustained attention indices mediated the temporal relationship between pre-existing ASD and later-reported suicidal thoughts. A multiple mediation model confirmed that bullying victimization and cognitive flexibility jointly mediated the temporal relationship between ASD and suicidal thoughts. Better cognitive flexibility and experiences of bullying victimization in autistic children/youth were both associated with higher risks of later-reported suicidal thoughts in adolescence/adulthood. School bullying-prevention programs and tailored clinical support for autistic youth with better cognitive flexibility are warranted for personalized suicide prevention for the autistic population.

36. Effect of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on the Carbon and Nitrogen Cycling Processes in Saline Soil

Abstract

Soil salinization is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed in current agricultural production. In this study, we utilized novel materials, unfunctionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-OH), to explore the effects of soil carbon and nitrogen cycles in saline soil. We set up four treatments, which were exposed to two exposure doses of 1 g/kg and 1 μg/kg and two MWCNT types of functionalized MWCNT-OH and unfunctionalized MWCNT. Our results demonstrate that exposure of saline soil to 1 g/kg functionalized MWCNT-OH significantly increased the soil inorganic nitrogen (p < 0.05), while also promoting the soil microbial biomass. This exposure can also potentially enhance greenhouse gas emissions from saline soil. Moreover, exposure to MWCNTs significantly increased the proportion of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria, two dominant phyla (p < 0.05), which in turn improved their contribution to the carbon and nitrogen cycling processes within saline soil. High exposure dose treatments (1 g/kg) significantly increased the abundance of functional genes associated with carbon metabolism, carbon fixation, methane metabolism, and nitrogen cycling processes within saline soil. In contrast, low exposure dose treatments (1 μg/kg) had no significant effect on the abundance of functional genes related to nitrogen cycling, but significantly increased the abundance of special functional genes related to carbon cycling. Redundancy analysis revealed that the microbial community composition within saline soil was significantly impacted by the soil total carbon, total nitrogen, and nitrate nitrogen content. Furthermore, it was observed that over 80% of the carbon and nitrogen cycling processes within the saline soil were contributed by the dominant phyla. In summary, our research confirms the potential applicability of MWCNTs within saline soil. Notably, exposure of saline soil to 1 g/kg functionalized MWCNT-OH exhibited the most significant promoting effect on the carbon and nitrogen cycles.

Abstract

Presently, the effects of crop roots on crop root zone thermal characteristics are poorly understood, and new fertilizers are rarely considered from the perspective of changing crop root zone thermal characteristics. This study explored the effect of applying two new fertilizers, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Bacillus atrophaeus (B. atrophaeus), on the crop root zone thermal characteristics of saline farmland soils through in situ measurements. The results showed that MWCNTs and B. atrophaeus could indirectly affect crop root zone thermal characteristics by changing the crop root growth. Combined application of MWCNTs and B. atrophaeus could promote both to induce positive effects, promote crop root growth, and significantly alleviate the adverse effects of soil salinization. The thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the shallow root zone were reduced due to the presence of crop roots, while the opposite was true in the deep root zone. For example, the thermal conductivity of the 0–5 cm rich root zone in the MWCNT treatment was 0.8174 W m−1 ·K−1, and the thermal conductivity of the poor root zone was 13.42% higher than that of the rich root zone. MWCNTs and B. atrophaeus can also change the spatial distribution of soil moisture, soil salt, and soil particle size characteristics by influencing the root-soil interactions and indirectly affecting crop root zone thermal characteristics. In addition, MWCNTs and B. atrophaeus could directly affect the root zone thermal characteristics by changing the soil properties. The higher the soil salt content was, the more obvious the effect of the MWCNTs and B. atrophaeus on the crop root zone thermal characteristics. The thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the crop root zone were positively correlated with the soil moisture content, soil salt content and soil particle specific surface area and negatively correlated with the soil particle size and the fresh and dry root weights. In summary, MWCNTs and B. atrophaeus significantly affected crop root zone thermal characteristics directly and indirectly and could adjust the temperature of the crop root zone.

Abstract

Nanomaterials, including multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), have been recently applied in agriculture to improve stress resistance, leading to contradictory findings for antioxidant responses and mineral nutrient uptake. A pot experiment involving maize in low-salinity sandy loam soils was conducted with the application of different concentrations (0, 20, 50 mg/L) of MWCNTs and the growth-promoting rhizobacterium Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis). The dose-dependent effects of MWCNTs were confirmed: 20 mg/L MWCNTs significantly promoted the accumulation of osmolytes in maize, particularly K+ in the leaves and roots, increased the leaf indoleacetic acid content, decreased the leaf abscisic acid content; but the above-mentioned promoting effects decreased significantly in 50 mg/L MWCNTs-treated plants. We observed a synergistic effect of the combined application of MWCNTs and B. subtilis on plant salt tolerance. The increased lipid peroxidation and antioxidant-like proline, peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) activities suggested that MWCNTs induced oxidative stress in maize growing in low-salinity soils. B. subtilis reduced the oxidative stress caused by MWCNTs, as indicated by a lower content of malondialdehyde (MDA). The MWCNTs significantly increased the leaf Na+ content and leaf Na+/K+ ratio; however, when applied in combination with B. subtilis, the leaf Na+/K+ ratio decreased sharply to 69% and 44%, respectively, compared to those of the control (CK) group, the contents of which were partially regulated by abscisic acid and nitrate, according to the results of the structural equation model (SEM). Overall, the increased osmolytes and well-regulated Na+/K+ balance and transport in plants after the combined application of MWCNTs and B. subtilis reveal great potential for their use in combating abiotic stress.

Abstract

Since the last IAEA-FEC in 2021, significant progress on the development of long pulse steady state scenario and its related key physics and technologies have been achieved, including the reproducible 403 s long-pulse steady-state H-mode plasma with pure radio frequency (RF) power heating. A thousand-second time scale (∼1056 s) fully non-inductive plasma with high injected energy up to 1.73 GJ has also been achieved. The EAST operational regime of high βP has been significantly extended (H98y2 > 1.3, βP ∼ 4.0, βN ∼ 2.4 and ne/nGW ∼ 1.0) using RF and neutral beam injection (NBI). The full edge localized mode suppression using the n = 4 resonant magnetic perturbations has been achieved in ITER-like standard type-I ELMy H-mode plasmas with q95 ≈ 3.1 on EAST, extrapolating favorably to the ITER baseline scenario. The sustained large ELM control and stable partial detachment have been achieved with Ne seeding. Abstract

Akin to the impact that digital microelectronics had on electronic devices for information technology, digital microfluidics (DMF) was anticipated to transform fluidic devices for lab-on-a-chip (LoC) applications. However, despite a wealth of research and publications, electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) DMF has not achieved the anticipated wide adoption, and commercialization has been painfully slow. By identifying the technological and resource hurdles in developing DMF chip and control systems as the culprit, we envision democratizing DMF by building a standardized design and manufacturing platform. To achieve this vision, we introduce a proof-of-concept cloud platform that empowers any user to design, obtain, and operate DMF chips (https://edroplets.org). For chip design, we establish a web-based EWOD chip design platform with layout rules and automated wire routing. For chip manufacturing, we build a web-based EWOD chip manufacturing platform and fabricate four types of EWOD chips (i.e., glass, paper, PCB, and TFT) to demonstrate the foundry service workflow. For chip control, we introduce a compact EWOD control system along with web-based operating software. Although industrial fabrication services are beyond the scope of this work, we hope this perspective will inspire academic and commercial stakeholders to join the initiative toward a DMF ecosystem for the masses.

Abstract

Vibrometry-based side channels pose a significant privacy risk, exploiting sensors like mmWave radars, light sensors, and accelerometers to detect vibrations from sound sources or proximate objects, enabling speech eavesdropping. Despite various proposed defenses, these involve costly hardware solutions with inherent physical limitations. This paper presents EveGuard, a software-driven defense framework that creates adversarial audio, protecting voice privacy from side channels without compromising human perception. We leverage the distinct sensing capabilities of side channels and traditional microphones where side channels capture vibrations and microphones record changes in air pressure, resulting in different frequency responses. EveGuard first proposes a perturbation generator model (PGM) that effectively suppresses sensor-based eavesdropping while maintaining high audio quality. Second, to enable end-to-end training of PGM, we introduce a new domain translation task called Eve-GAN for inferring an eavesdropped signal from a given audio. We further apply few-shot learning to mitigate the data collection overhead for Eve-GAN training. Our extensive experiments show that EveGuard achieves a protection rate of more than 97 percent from audio classifiers and significantly hinders eavesdropped audio reconstruction. We further validate the performance of EveGuard across three adaptive attack mechanisms. We have conducted a user study to verify the perceptual quality of our perturbed audio.

44. Unlocking Transfer Learning for Open-World Few-Shot Recognition

Abstract

Few-Shot Open-Set Recognition (FSOSR) targets a critical real-world challenge, aiming to categorize inputs into known categories, termed closed-set classes, while identifying open-set inputs that fall outside these classes. Although transfer learning where a model is tuned to a given few-shot task has become a prominent paradigm in closed-world, we observe that it fails to expand to open-world. To unlock this challenge, we propose a two-stage method which consists of open-set aware meta-learning with open-set free transfer learning. In the open-set aware meta-learning stage, a model is trained to establish a metric space that serves as a beneficial starting point for the subsequent stage. During the open-set free transfer learning stage, the model is further adapted to a specific target task through transfer learning. Additionally, we introduce a strategy to simulate open-set examples by modifying the training dataset or generating pseudo open-set examples. The proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance on two widely recognized benchmarks, miniImageNet and tieredImageNet, with only a 1.5\% increase in training effort. Our work demonstrates the effectiveness of transfer learning in FSOSR.

45. Post-selection shifts the transition frequency of helium in an atomic beam

Abstract

Post-selecting output states in measurements can effectively amplify weak signals and improve precision. However, post-selection effects may also introduce unintended biases in precision measurements. Here, we investigate the influence of post-selection in the precision spectroscopy of the $2^3S - 2^3P$ transition of helium ($^4$He) using an atomic beam. We directly observe that post-selection based on atomic positions causes a shift in the measured transition frequency, amounting to approximately -55 kHz. After accounting for this post-selection shift, we obtain a corrected frequency of $276,764,094,712.45 \pm 0.86$ kHz for the $2^3S_1 - 2^3P_0$ transition. Combining this result with existing data for $^3$He, we derive a new value for the difference in squared nuclear charge radii, $\delta r^2 [r_{h}^{2} - r_{\alpha}^{2}] = 1.0733 \pm 0.0021$ fm$^2$. This value shows a $2.8\sigma$ deviation from measurements of muonic helium ions, potentially pointing to new physics that challenges lepton universality in quantum electrodynamics., Comment: 14 pages including appendix

Abstract

We study the relevance of random flux on stability and emergence of topological phases of matter. A particularly interesting model in the presence of random flux is the anisotropic Wilson-Dirac model in two spatial dimensions. We show that this model exhibits an intriguing topological phase transition from a weak topological insulator to a Chern insulator driven by random flux. We numerically establish a global phase diagram of this model in presence of random flux. We uncover the underlying mechanism of topological phase transitions with an analytical effective medium theory, illustrating momentum-dependent renormalizations of model parameters by random flux. This analysis allows us to identify quasi-critical phase points at transitions between weak and strong topological phases, where eigen states are extended in one spatial direction but localized in the other one. Abstract

The rise of Foundation Models (FMs) like Large Language Models (LLMs) is revolutionizing software development. Despite the impressive prototypes, transforming FMware into production-ready products demands complex engineering across various domains. A critical but overlooked aspect is performance engineering, which aims at ensuring FMware meets performance goals such as throughput and latency to avoid user dissatisfaction and financial loss. Often, performance considerations are an afterthought, leading to costly optimization efforts post-deployment. FMware's high computational resource demands highlight the need for efficient hardware use. Continuous performance engineering is essential to prevent degradation. This paper highlights the significance of Software Performance Engineering (SPE) in FMware, identifying four key challenges: cognitive architecture design, communication protocols, tuning and optimization, and deployment. These challenges are based on literature surveys and experiences from developing an in-house FMware system. We discuss problems, current practices, and innovative paths for the software engineering community.

Abstract

While working within the spatial domain can pose problems associated with ill-conditioned scores caused by power-law decay, recent advances in diffusion-based generative models have shown that transitioning to the wavelet domain offers a promising alternative. However, within the wavelet domain, we encounter unique challenges, especially the sparse representation of high-frequency coefficients, which deviates significantly from the Gaussian assumptions in the diffusion process. To this end, we propose a multi-scale generative modeling in the wavelet domain that employs distinct strategies for handling low and high-frequency bands. In the wavelet domain, we apply score-based generative modeling with well-conditioned scores for low-frequency bands, while utilizing a multi-scale generative adversarial learning for high-frequency bands. As supported by the theoretical analysis and experimental results, our model significantly improve performance and reduce the number of trainable parameters, sampling steps, and time.

Abstract

DarkSHINE is a newly proposed fixed-target experiment initiative to search for the invisible decay of Dark Photon via missing energy/momentum signatures, based on the high repetition rate electron beam to be deployed/delivered by the Shanghai High repetition rate XFEL and Extreme light facility (SHINE). This report elaborates the baseline design of DarkSHINE experiment by introducing the physics goals, experimental setups, details of each sub-detector system technical designs, signal and backgground modelings, expected search sensitivities and future prospects, which mark an important step towards the further prototyping and technical demonstrations.

50. Research on Domain-Specific Chinese Spelling Correction Method Based on Plugin Extension Modules

Abstract

This paper proposes a Chinese spelling correction method based on plugin extension modules, aimed at addressing the limitations of existing models in handling domain-specific texts. Traditional Chinese spelling correction models are typically trained on general-domain datasets, resulting in poor performance when encountering specialized terminology in domain-specific texts. To address this issue, we design an extension module that learns the features of domain-specific terminology, thereby enhancing the model's correction capabilities within specific domains. This extension module can provide domain knowledge to the model without compromising its general spelling correction performance, thus improving its accuracy in specialized fields. Experimental results demonstrate that after integrating extension modules for medical, legal, and official document domains, the model's correction performance is significantly improved compared to the baseline model without any extension modules.
