7. Design of a W-band T[E.sub.01] mode gyrotron traveling-wave amplifier with high power and broad-band capabilities

Abstract

A high-power gyrotron traveling-wave amplifier operating in the low-loss T[E.sub.01] mode has been constructed at the University of California, Davis that will be driven by a 100-kV, 5-A electron beam with a pitch angle ([v.sub.[perpendicular to]]/ [v.sub.z]) of unity and velocity spread of 5%. The amplifier is predicted by large-signal simulations to generate 140 kW at 92 GHz with 28% efficiency, 50-dB saturated gain and 5% bandwidth. The stability of the amplifier from oscillation has been investigated with linear codes. The threshold current for the absolute instability of the T[E.sub.01] operating mode for the chosen operating parameters is predicted to be 10 A. To suppress the potential gyro-backward-wave oscillator interactions, the interaction circuit with a cutoff frequency of 91 GHz has been loaded with distributed loss so that the single-pass attenuation is 90 dB at 93 GHz. The coaxial input coupler has a predicted and measured coupling of 1 and 2 dB, respectively. Abstract

Solid 87Rb NMR spectroscopy, using dynamic-angle spinning (DAS) techniques, allows the study of nuclear quadruple interactions in five inorganic rubidium salts. In contrast to magic- and variable-angle (MAS, VAS) techniques, DAS is able to effect anisotropic spectral line broadening and thus yields the needed isotropic chemical and second-order quadrupole shifts. Complete chemical shift and quadrupole parameters for the three distinct rubidium sites in RbNO3 are presented from MAS-detected DAS simulations of single-site line shapes.

Abstract

Asia Cement Corps.'s Hualien cement plant in north west Taiwan can produce around 2 million t/y of clinker following the installation of two large precalcined kilns supplied by KHD. The new, $160 million, 5,000 t/d production line includes a limestone storage and homogenization facility, a raw meal silo, a cyclone preheater and short rotary kiln, a clinker cooler and clinker storage facility. The new plant uses a waste heat recovery system for power generation. The Hualien plant is the largest cement plant in Taiwan.

Contains fulltext : 177328.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), Inflammasome is an intracellular protein complex that serves as cytosolic pattern recognition receptor (PRR) to engage with pathogens and to process cytokines of the interleukin-1 (IL-1) family into bioactive molecules. It has been established that interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) is important to host defense against Histoplasma capsulatum infection. However, the detailed mechanism of how H. capsulatum induces inflammasome activation leading to IL-1beta production has not been studied. Here, we showed in dendritic cells (DCs) that H. capsulatum triggers caspase-1 activation and IL-1beta production through NLRP3 inflammasome. By reciprocal blocking of Dectin-1 or Dectin-2 in single receptor-deficient DCs and cells from Clec4n-/-, Clec7a-/-, and Clec7a-/-Clec4n-/- mice, we discovered that while Dectin-2 operates as a primary receptor, Dectin-1 serves as a secondary one for NLRP3 inflammasome. In addition, both receptors trigger Syk-JNK signal pathway to activate signal 1 (pro-IL-1beta synthesis) and signal 2 (activation of caspase-1). Results of pulmonary infection with H. capsulatum showed that CD103+ DCs are one of the major producers of IL-1beta and Dectin-2 and Dectin-1 double deficiency abolishes their IL-1beta response to the fungus. While K+ efflux and cathepsin B (but not ROS) function as signal 2, viable but not heat-killed H. capsulatum triggers profound lysosomal rupture leading to cathepsin B release. Interestingly, cathepsin B release is regulated by ERK/JNK downstream of Dectin-2 and Dectin-1. Our study demonstrates for the first time the unique roles of Dectin-2 and Dectin-1 in triggering Syk-JNK to activate signal 1 and 2 for H. capsulatum-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

Abstract

A frequency tunable scheme is described for the gyrotron at millimeter/submillimeter regime and the characteristics of backward-wave interactions are studied. The results have shown that the oscillation frequency has transitioned over a wide range of 6 GHz from 134 to 140 GHz and with proper design this mechanism can produce medium output power with broad frequency tunability up to the terahertz region.
