We investigate a system of fermions on a two-dimensional optical square lattice in the strongly repulsive coupling regime. In this case, the interactions can be controlled by laser intensity as well as by Feshbach resonance. We compare the energetics of states with resonating valence bond d-wave superfluidity, antiferromagnetic long range order and a homogeneous state with coexistence of superfluidity and antiferromagnetism. We show that the energy density of a hole $e_{hole}(x)$ has a minimum at doping $x=x_c$ that signals phase separation between the antiferromagnetic and d-wave paired superfluid phases. The energy of the phase-separated ground state is however found to be very close to that of a homogeneous state with coexisting antiferromagnetic and superfluid orders. We explore the dependence of the energy on the interaction strength and on the three-site hopping terms and compare with the nearest neighbor hopping {\it t-J} model.

We study the physics of a three-component Fermi gas in an optical lattice, in the presence of a strong three-body constraint arising due to three-body loss. Using analytical and numerical techniques, we show that an atomic color superfluid phase is formed in this system and undergoes phase separation between unpaired fermions and superfluid pairs. This phase separation survives well above the critical temperature, giving a clear experimental signature of the three-body constraint., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Expanded text

We use quantum Monte Carlo, including backflow corrections, to investigate a two-component Fermi gas on the upper branch of a Feshbach resonance and contrast it with the hard sphere gas. We find that, in both cases, the Fermi liquid becomes unstable to ferromagnetism at a $k_F a$ smaller than the mean field result, where $k_F$ is the Fermi wavevector and $a$ the scattering length. Even though the total energies $E(k_F a)$ are similar in the two cases, their pair correlations and kinetic energies are completely different, reflecting the underlying potentials. We discuss the extent to which our calculations shed light on recent experiments.

Prescribing $\sigma_k$ curvature equations are fully nonlinear generalizations of the prescribing Gaussian or scalar curvature equations. Given a positive function $K$ to be prescribed on the 4-dimensional round sphere. We obtain asymptotic profile analysis for potentially blowing up solutions to the $\sigma_2$ curvature equation with the given $K$; and rule out the possibility of blowing up solutions when $K$ satisfies a non-degeneracy condition. We also prove uniform a priori estimates for solutions to a family of $\sigma_2$ curvature equations deforming $K$ to a positive constant under the same non-degeneracy condition on $K$, and prove the existence of a solution using degree argument to this deformation involving fully nonlinear elliptic operators under an additional, natural degree condition on a finite dimensional map associated with $K$., Comment: 39 pages. The radio frequency spectrum of the fermions in the unitary limit at finite temperatures is characterized by the sum rule relations. We consider a simple picture where the atoms are removed by radio frequency excitations from the strongly interacting states into a state of negligible interaction. We calculate the moments of the response function in the range of temperature $0.08 \epsilon_F < T < 0.8 \epsilon_F$ using auxiliary field Monte Carlo technique (AFMC) in which continuum auxiliary fields with a density dependent shift are used. We estimate the effects of superfluid pairing from the clock shift. We find a qualitative agreement with the pairing gap - pseudogap transition behavior. We also find within the quasiparticle picture that in order for the gap to come into quantitative agreement with the previously known value at T=0, the effective mass has to be $m^* \sim 1.43 m$. Finally, we discuss implications for the adiabatic sweep of the resonant magnetic field., Comment: 2 figures

The equation of state of the partially polarized two component Fermi gas at zero temperature in the unitary limit is computed by {\it ab initio} auxiliary field Monte Carlo method. We obtain the critical ratio of the chemical potentials $\mu_\downarrow/\mu_\uparrow$ at the phase transitions. The value of $\mu_\downarrow/\mu_\uparrow$ at the transition between the fully paired superfluid and the partially polarized phase is 0.11 while the critical value for the phase transition between the partially polarized phase and the fully polarized normal fluid is -0.59. We also determine the radial boundaries of the phase transitions of the Fermi gas in the harmonic trap as function of the total polarization. We find that beyond the critical polarization 0.65, the fully paired superfluid core disappears in the trapped Fermi gas., Comment: 4 pages,4 figures

We present an {\it ab initio} calculation of small numbers of trapped, strongly interacting fermions using the Green's Function Monte Carlo method (GFMC). The ground state energy, density profile and pairing gap are calculated for particle numbers $N = 2 \sim 22$ using the parameter-free "unitary" interaction. Trial wave functions are taken of the form of correlated pairs in a harmonic oscillator basis. We find that the lowest energies are obtained with a minimum explicit pair correlation beyond that needed to exploit the degeneracy of oscillator states. We find that energies can be well fitted by the expression $a_{TF} E_{TF} + \Delta {\rm mod}(N,2)$ where $E_{TF}$ is the Thomas-Fermi energy of a noninteracting gas in the trap and $\Delta$ is a pairing gap. There is no evidence of a shell correction energy in the systematics, but the density distributions show pronounced shell effects. We find the value $\Delta= 0.7\pm 0.2\omega$ for the pairing gap. This is smaller than the value found for the uniform gas at a density corresponding to the central density of the trapped gas., Comment: 2 figures, 2 tables

We present an analysis of the SU(3) symmetric model of the strongly interacting three component Fermi gas in the continuum space using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. Three body effects predominate in the regime of interaction strength beyond that of threshold of the three particle bound state. However, we find that there is an interval of the interaction strength where the SU(2)$\otimes$U(1) broken symmetry superfluidity is possible. For a strong enough interaction, the SU(3) symmetry is restored and the superfluidity is suppressed. Within the interval of the broken symmetry, we also find that on average the particle pairs belonging to the species with superfluid pairing remain further separated than those without the superfluid pairing correlation., Comment: 4

The ground state energy and pairing gap of the interacting Fermi gases calculated by the {\it ab initio} stochastic method are compared with those estimated from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing Hamiltonian. We discuss the ingredients of this Hamiltonian in various regimes of interaction strength. In the weakly interacting ($1/ak_F <<0$) regime the BCS Hamiltonian should describe Landau quasi-particle energies and interactions, on the other hand in the strongly pairing regime, that is $1/ak_F \gtrsim 0$, it becomes part of the bare Hamiltonian. However, the bare BCS Hamiltonian is not adequate for describing atomic gases in the regime of weak to moderate interaction strength $-\infty < 1/ak_F <0$ such as $ak_F \sim -1$. We present a high-sensitivity microwave vector detection system for studying the low-dimensional electron system embedded in the gaps of a coplanar waveguide at low temperatures. Using this system, we have achieved 0.005% and 0.001\textdegree resolutions in amplitude and phase variations, respectively, at 10 GHz in a magnetotransport measurement on a quantum-wire array with an average signal power less than $-$75 dBm into the sample at 0.3 K. The ground state energies and pairing gaps in dilute superfluid Fermi gases have now been calculated with the quantum Monte Carlo method without detailed knowledge of their wave functions. However, such knowledge is essential to predict other properties of these gases such as density matrices and pair distribution functions. We present a new and simple method to optimize the wave functions of quantum fluids using Green's function Monte Carlo method. It is used to calculate the pair distribution functions and potential energies of Fermi gases over the entire regime from atomic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluid to molecular Bose-Einstein condensation, spanned as the interaction strength is varied., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The study of the $k$-th elementary symmetric function of the Weyl-Schouten curvature tensor of a Riemannian metric, the so called $\sigma_k$ curvature, has produced many fruitful results in conformal geometry in recent years. In these studies, the deforming conformal factor is considered to be a solution of a fully nonlinear elliptic PDE. Important advances have been made in recent years in the understanding of the analytic behavior of solutions of the PDE. However, the singular behavior of these solutions, which is important in describing many important questions in conformal geometry, is little understood. This note classifies all possible radial solutions, in particular, the \emph{singular} solutions of the $\sigma_k$ Yamabe equation, which describes conformal metrics whose $\sigma_k$ curvature equals a constant. Although the analysis involved is of elementary nature, these results should provide useful guidance in studying the behavior of singular solutions in the general situation., Comment: 12 figures

We report results of quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the ground state of dilute Fermi gases with attractive short range two-body interactions. The strength of the interaction is varied to study different pairing regimes which are characterized by the product of the s-wave scattering length and the Fermi wave vector, $ak_F$. We report results for the ground state energy, the pairing gap $\Delta$ and the quasiparticle spectrum. In the weak coupling regime, $1/ak_F < -1$, we obtain BCS superfluid and the energy gap $\Delta$ is much smaller than the Fermi gas energy $E_{FG}$. When $ a > 0$, the interaction is strong enough to form bound molecules with energy $E_{mol}$. For $1/ak_F \gtrsim 0.5$ we find that weakly interacting composite bosons are formed in the superfluid gas with $\Delta$ and gas energy per particle approaching $|E_{mol}|/2$. In this region we seem to have Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of molecules. We review recent progress in the theory of neutron matter with particular emphasis on its superfluid properties. Results of quantum Monte Carlo calculations of simple and realistic models of uniform superfluid neutron gas are discussed along with those of neutrons interacting in a potential well chosen to approximate neutron-rich oxygen isotopes. The properties of dilute superfluid Fermi gases that may be produced in atom traps, and their relations with neutron matter, are illustrated. The density dependence of the effective interaction between neutrons, used to describe neutron-rich systems with the mean field approximations, is also discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures
