Evaluations have been made of naturally occurring clinoptilolite-rich rock (CRR) as an additive to clay liner systems for minimising contaminant leakage through waste containment barriers. The effects of mixing one part CRR from South Dakota with 10 parts natural clay soil from the Denver area were investigated in terms of geotechnical index properties, hydraulic conductivity and chemistry of the soil-leachate system. The geotechnical index properties of the mixture were found to be the same as natural soil, with the exception of the plasticity index which decreased from 35.3% to 33.6%. When permeated with leachate from an industrial waste landfill the hydraulic conductivity remained constant until 3.5 pore volumes of leachate had passed through the specimen. From this point it decreased rapidly due to bacterial growth in the specimen.
