Abstract

The excessive energy demand of the conventional Haber–Bosch process for ammonia (NH3) generation, coupled with the disruptive effects of nitrate (NO3−) pollution on the global nitrogen cycle, has made the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3−RR) an essential exit strategy for sustainable NH3 synthesis. However, the intricate multi-step proton and electron transfer process posed a great challenge in achieving high-efficiency electrocatalysts. In this study, we report a selective and highly active NO3−RR electrocatalyst featuring molecular M–Nx sites derived from the immobilization of Fe ions within N-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs). We demonstrated that the formation of molecular Fe–Nx coordination activated the NO3−RR of NGQDs-Fe, despite the initial inactivity of NGQDs. In situ Raman analysis revealed that those Fe–Nx sites served as favourable adsorption sites for *NO3. Such catalyst achieved an FE of 93% and a yield rate of 15.41 mmol h−1 cm−2 for NH3 at −0.8 V (vs. RHE) in an alkaline medium. These findings revealed the preferential sequential 2e− and 6e− transfer pathways over the direct 8e− pathway in the NO3−RR, which provides new mechanistic insights into the nitrate reduction reaction. 25. Multifunctional Structure-Modified Quaternary Compounds Co9Se8–CuSe2–WSe2Mixed with MWCNT as a Counter Electrode Material for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract

In this study, a trimetallic selenide material with a hollow spherical structure (Co9Se8–CuSe2–WSe2) was synthesized through two consecutive solvothermal reactions. The synergistic effect between the quaternary elements, the benefits of the selenization of metals, and the unique morphology led to the prominent electrocatalytic ability of Co9Se8–CuSe2–WSe2hollow spheres. Co9Se8–CuSe2–WSe2hollow spheres were then mixed with oxygen plasma-treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as counter electrode (CE) material for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), achieving a photoelectric conversion efficiency (η) of 9.23% under one sun condition (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm–2), surpassing the 8.08% of devices with platinum counter electrodes (PtCEs). For indoor conditions, a T5 light source was applied to the DSSCs with Co9Se8–CuSe2–WSe2+ MWCNT CE, and the efficiency increased to 14.14% under 3600 lx irradiance. Finally, Co9Se8–CuSe2–WSe2+ MWCNT CE demonstrated good stability with 92.23% retention after 1000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry, exceeding the 82.49% of PtCE. Therefore, Co9Se8–CuSe2–WSe2+ MWCNT shows potential as a substitute for platinum as CE material for DSSCs.

26. A near-infrared photoelectrochromic device with indoor thermal management for self-powered smart windows.

Abstract

A photoelectrochromic device (PECD) is a combination of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) and an electrochromic device (ECD) that directly generates transmittance contrast from solar radiation without an additional power source. In terms of application, PECDs have recently been utilized as self-powered smart windows for eco-friendly green buildings. The majority of PECDs have exceptional optical performance in the visible light region, with their electrochromic property regulating the indoor luminance. Nonetheless, indoor temperature regulation is also a potential opportunity that might be examined further for PECDs. As the temperature is highly correlated with the incident flux of infrared light, this study presents a near-infrared photoelectrochromic device (NIR-PECD) with WO3 as the electrochromic material for blocking infrared radiation, realizing indoor thermal management without external power. The NIR-PECD exhibited the ability of thermal modulation and lowered the indoor temperature with a transmittance contrast in the NIR region, demonstrating a transmittance contrast (ΔT) of 40.2% and an outstanding photocoloration efficiency (PhCE) of 55.85 cm2 min−1 W−1 at the wavelength of 1000 nm. In addition, the NIR-PECD also displayed a 5.6 °C temperature difference between the colored and bleached states, indicating the thermal management capabilities of keeping the interior cool in the colored state by blocking the NIR. 40. Enhancing self-induced polarization of PVDF-based triboelectric film by P-doped g-C3N4for ultrasensitive triboelectric pressure sensors

Abstract

Progress in wearable energy devices has reached the point of popularity over a few decades, as reflected by the rise of numerous sensors and storage devices driven by the urgent need for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Triboelectric sensor (TES), on the basis of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), exhibits high sensitivity and stability for pressure detection. Maximizing the sensitivity of the TES hinges upon the triboelectric layer selection capable of harnessing triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. Among them, PVDF has gained attention owing to its exceptional flexibility and tribo-negativity. However, the multiphase of pristine PVDF poses challenges, limiting its potential for TES with higher sensitivity. Tackling this issue, herein, we introduced phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride (PCN) into the PVDF films to achieve self-induced polarization to enhance the sensitivity of the triboelectric pressure sensor. Through a controlled annealing temperature, phosphorus atoms are incorporated into the g-C3N4(CN) matrix, enhancing the electronegativity of PVDF/PCN composite film while inducing a polarized β crystal phase in PVDF, thereby enabling greater attraction of positive charges. Consequently, the triboelectric output with PVDF/PCN composite film exhibited a significant improvement compared to the pristine PVDF film, achieving over a 100 V increment and the ability to power more than 100 LEDs. Furthermore, for the pressure-sensing applications, the TES with flexible PVDF/PCN triboelectric film exhibits a pressure sensitivity of 1.48 V/kPa, which shows a threefold increase in sensitivity compared to the pristine PVDF film (0.51 V/kPa), suggesting their great potential in self-powered wearable pressure sensors.

Abstract

The research objective in this paper is to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of utilizing envelope extraction combining the multi-scale entropy (MSE) analysis for identifying different roller bearing faults. The features were extracted from the angle-domain vibration signals that were measured through the hardware-implemented order-tracking technique, so that the characteristics of bearing defects are not affected by the rotating speed. The envelope analysis was employed to the vibration measurements as well as the selected intrinsic mode function (IMF) that was separated by the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method. By using the coarse-grain process, the entropy of the envelope signals in the different scales was calculated to form the MSE distributions that represent the complexity of the signals. The decision tree was used to distinguish the entropy-related features which reveal the different classes of bearing faults.

Abstract

Stress gradient of a thin film along its thickness direction has important influence on performance of MEMS/NEMS devices. The measuring method based on curvature radius is a usual method for extracting film stress gradient. In this paper the error of the method has been analyzed using Finite Element Analysis software Coventorware, and the current theory has been modified according to FEA results to enhance its accuracy. Simulating results indicated that the accuracy of the method has been increased observably after correcting.
