9. Differential Importance of Language Components in Determining Secondary School Students' Chinese Reading Literacy Performance

Abstract

The present study examined pedagogic components of Chinese reading literacy in a representative sample of 1164 Grades 7, 9 and 11 Chinese students (mean age of 15 years) from 11 secondary schools in Hong Kong with each student tested for about 2.5 hours. Multiple group confirmatory factor analyses showed that across the three grade levels, the eight reading literacy constructs (Essay Writing, Morphological Compounding, Correction of Characters and Words, Segmentation of Text, Text Comprehension, Copying of Characters and Words, Writing to Dictation and Reading Aloud), each subserved by multiple indicators, had differential concurrent prediction of scaled internal school performance in reading and composing. Writing-reading and their interactive effects were foremost in their predictive power, followed by performance in error correction and writing to dictation, morphological compounding, segmenting text and copying with reading aloud playing a negligible role. Our battery of tasks with some refinement could serve as a screening instrument for secondary Chinese students struggling with Chinese reading literacy.

18. Adaptive data driven control based upon simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation and neural network

Abstract

A novel data-driven control strategy is proposed based upon the Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA) method with adaptive weighted gradient estimation for general discrete nonlinear systems. The controller is constructed through use of a Function Approximator (FA), which is fixed as a neural network here. The number of layers and notes in each layer is fixed previously, while the connecting weights, which are then the control parameters, are allowed to be updated. This proposed data-driven control approach just need to take as input past and current system information and produce as output a control value to affect future system performance, and it does not need to establish the mathematical model of controlled plant previously. In this novel approach, the parametric estimation is designed to be adaptive. On the other hand, in order to accelerate the convergence property, a PI compensator is accommodated into the proposed data-driven control strategy. The control ability has been greatly improved and the proposed control strategy is finally applied to solve nonlinear tracking problems for discrete-time nonlinear systems. Simulation comparison tests were conducted on typical non-linear plants, through which, the convergence and feasibility of the proposed data-driven control strategy is well demonstrated.

19. Energy saving method of refrigeration system based on model-free control algorithm

Abstract

This article designs a dual-loop energy-saving control scheme for the refrigeration system. To deal with the actual refrigeration system with characteristics of large time-delay, a model-free adaptive control method with input rate constraint of time delay is designed to reduce the impact of large time delay on the whole control process. Simulation study of typical system with large time delay is carried out and the energy saving control scheme using the proposed novel model-free control algorithm is considered. It is shown that the proposed control algorithm has better dynamic characteristics and faster response speed. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is validated.
