4. Low-cost broadband circularly polarized patch antenna

Abstract

A novel single-feed broadband circularly polarized patch antenna is proposed. The proposed antenna has a simple structure, consisting of a corner-truncated square radiating patch, an L-shaped ground plane, and a probe feed. Through a via hole in the vertical ground of the L-shaped ground plane, the radiating patch is easily excited by a probe feed oriented in the same plane as the patch, and circular polarization (CP) radiation over a wide frequency range (> 10%) is achieved. Experimental results of a constructed prototype with the center operating frequency at about 2500 MHz showed that the antenna has an impedance bandwidth (1.5: 1 VSWR) of about 30%, a 3-dB axial-ratio CP bandwidth of about 10.4%, and a gain level of 8.5 dBi or larger within the CP bandwidth. In addition to the low cost of the proposed antenna due to its simple structure, the obtained CP performance is among the best that have been reported for single-feed single-element patch antennas, Index Terms--Broadband, circular polarization (CP), patch antenna, probe-fed.

Abstract

A simple single-plate, π-shaped multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with built-in port isolation operated at 5 GHz (5150-5850 MHz) band is proposed. The MIMO antenna is a symmetrical structure formed on a single-layered FR4 substrate. The main radiating element is of a single-plate π-shaped structure, and is 4 mm away from the antenna ground. The ground plane in this design provides sufficient finite size to properly excite the antenna. The π-shaped structure has a few desired features: a space saver, due to co-location of impedance matching network and isolation structure; built-in isolation and stable MIMO operations; existence of stationary current sink and source (S-S/S) points, which were proven to be the key to enhance port isolation. Since the commonly referred neutralisation line (NL) technique does not exhibit S-S/S points; thus, our design is not considered as a NL. The radiation patterns of the two planar inverted F antenna -like monopoles cover the complementary space regions of 45°-50°, the antenna yields peak gain varied from 2 to 3 dBi, and radiation efficiency was >60% at 5 GHz band. The antenna port envelope correlation coefficient was about 0.05.

Abstract

Unlicensed spectrum at 5 GHz, from 5.15 GHz to 5.85 GHz, has been proposed by multiple countries as the U-NII (Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure) radio band to be used by IEEE-802.11a. This frequency band of interest of 5 GHz can also be potentially applicable to 5G (the Fifth Generation, a commercial system operating on licensed bands) wireless wide area network (WAN) systems. The 5 GHz band is relatively clean, as compared to the overly crowded 2.45 GHz band. Our space-efficient beamforming design is based on this band. The bandwidth of the patch antennas used in the beam-former was designed to be 0.7 GHz; at the center frequency of 5.5 GHz, it is 13% of the center frequency. Any designed system that satisfies this percentage can be considered as a broadband system. In this paper, we first discuss a preliminary Proof of Concept (two double-layer organic boards) design, then show the preliminary results; and lastly discuss the design improvement (Section IV).
